The food at Upstairs By Tom Shepherd is on another level. Just stunning, clever and delicious. All staff are a credit to the restaurant and Tom is a really down to earth guy who interacts with his diners much more than any other Michelin Chef's restaurant we have visited. Always a pleasure to visit this restaurant and sets the bar very high.

Unreal experience!! From the moment we walked in until the moment we left, every member of staff has excelled..especially the gent who looked after us all evening, I forget the name, apologies, but his wife’s expecting so I’m sure you’ll know who we mean..😉 The food was as expected from previous reviews, fantastic, I won’t say much as to spoil the surprise but all the dishes were exceptional! A big shout out to Rachel who was our sommelier for the evening, a lovely person with knowledge to suit, the wine pairing is a must by the way!! Thanks for making my birthday one to remember.. Let's start by saying there is around 9/12 months wait to book a table - this sets the scene perfectly as to how good this restaurant really is. You are met by attentive, enthusiastic staff who really do seem to love working in the restaurant and things go exactly like this. The food is clever, amazing, interesting etc etc. Many other reviews highlight particular items/courses, but we simply felt it was a total once in a lifetime culinary experience. I think Michelin restaurants are as much about the experience as the actual food. We are fortunate to have eaten in numerous Michelin restaurants and Upstairs is simple amongst the very best.

The food was excellent with a smile on everyone who worked in upstairs. Really shows the business is run the right way. Each dish was delivered with complete explanation and meaning. The pictures attached include the scallop dish that is to truly behold.

We were delighted to get a cancellation after years of trying to visit Upstairs. I was especially lucky that it coincided with my birthday. It was such a treat and the best Thursday night out ever. The food was incredible and the service was perfect, as other reviewers have said below. We were welcomed like old friends. We will definitely return, leave the car at home and do the wine pairing next time. Love that such a special place is on our doorstep (we live in Sutton Coldfield).

My wife and I visited Upstairs on a Friday night. We did not live locally and therefore stayed at the nearby Premier Inn (5 mins walk). When we arrived, we given a warm friendly greeting. The team at Upstairs were fantastic all evening. They clearly are very passionate and knowledgable about the food and wine they serve, but so in a relaxed and warm way. The snacks started with had amazing flavours. This quality was maintained throughout the meal with the scallops (in a satay style sauce) and beef being particular highlights. My wife had the famous banana desert and it did not disappoint. Thank you for a really great night and we look forward to coming back soon.

Amazing evening from start to finish. The food was exceptional as was the wine pairing. Not only is Tom clearly a talented chef he’s also the perfect gentleman who took time out to chat to us at the end of a very busy service. His passion and attention to detail is mirrored by his team who were genuinely enthusiastic about all elements of the evening - and to the member of staff who stood and scrubbed the extractor fan at the end of the evening, well done, high standards are everything in that environment. Well worth a visit, would go again in a heartbeat.

Meant to have special birthday here. Booked 9 months + in advance. Told 3 months before the date that an extraction fan was being fitted that particular night (a Weds) when the restaurant is closed 3 days in the week anyway. Find out that they actually hosted a private members dining club on that night instead. It was obviously too good an offer to turn down, but lying about it and being prepared to ruin several couple’s big events has turned me off Tom and the restaurant. It may be Michelin starred food but it is McDonalds quality in terms of ethics and customer loyalty. From now on I will save my custom for Adams where they treat customers properly, do not take their custom for granted, lie to them or behave arrogantly when the lies are challenged.

If you've been waiting to visit Upstairs for some time, be patient because when you do, I'm sure it won't disappoint. Today we visited for the first time and had the privilege of sitting at the "kitchen table" which proved to be an amazing experience. Tom served a few courses to us which was a real treat, and the buzz of the team, combined with the skills on show, and some outstanding service made it a lunch to remember. The food was simply amazing, not good or great, it was off the scale. The snacks were delightful, the scallop was so full of flavour, the sauce that the cod was swimming in was good enough to be a course on its own, I could go on... The "transition Thai Green Curry" was also one of the most unusual but delicious things I've ever tasted. And whilst we didn't partake of the wine pairing, we did take a few recommendations (especially loved the Chinese Ice Wine) which were all outstanding. We'll definitely be back as it's one of the best, if not "the best" restaurant we've been to for a long, long time...

The best food I’ve ever eaten. Tom and the team are fantastic at what they do. From start to finish the service was excellent. Every course is delicious with incredible flavours. Unlike some fine dining, you still leave the restaurant full having had decent sized portions. This is not only the best restaurant in Lichfield but the best restaurant in the region. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Brilliant!

I have been very fortunate to eat here on a number of occasions. Tom and his team never fail to impress. The food is stunning. I don't know how they manage to get such amazing well balanced flavours on the plate. This has become one of my favourite Michelin restaurants and on my door step to boot. If you have not visited yet you must make the effort, you won't be disappointed. A massive thanks and well done to the team. Never fails to impress. Fantastic again. 😋

Outstanding experience. Everything at Upstairs feels confident and self-assured, despite being a relatively new restaurant. 'Transition' was our favourite course - every course was perfectly executed, but the menu really shines on the weirder and more inventive choices, like a Thai green curry pre-dessert. The discovery wine pairing is great, and the pairing with Transition was particularly inspired.

I went Upstairs last night. The experience is like going to a spa, where your every need, along with things you didn't even know you needed (handbag stools, for example), has been anticipated... Arriving to smiles, warm 'hellos' and efficient coat extraction, you are then guided to your alloted table, immediately feeling like you've been hugged, given a cosy pair of slippers and reclined in a lazy boy. You feel instantly at home, that just for that evening, you are part of the Tom Shepherd family. At each course, your senses are treated, tantalised... and sometimes tested. The wine pairings on the 'Discovery' flight, presented so well by 'Little Grapes', on this occasion, only add to an already wonderful culinary adventure. Timings were perfect. The facilities are immaculate. At the end of the sitting, you leave satiated, treated, enriched; you go downstairs.

What can I say? This place is amazing. The food is just superb. They are so good at what they do and are so creative. The stars of the show for me were the Cornish cod (the velouté is just beyond words), Thai green curry (it shouldn’t work but it does) and, of course, the famous No Ordinary Schoolboy. Everything had such strong flavours, it really was a great experience. Staff are superb too, our waiter was friendly and chatty. Great atmosphere, not stuffy or pretentious at all. Only downside is it is really hard to get a table. Can’t wait to go back

Excellent experience at Upstairs. We had the 7 course taster and wine flight, all delivered perfectly. This is a small intimate restaurant where you receive a lot of attention. The food was delicious and really makes you stop, think and appreciate the work that has gone into the preparation. I would definitely recommend taking the time to plan / book this experience into your schedule.

Our kids booked this in August last year as a 25th Wedding Anniversary treat for us. It was so worth the wait. Great vibe, good service and absolutely delicious food. Tasting menu is reasonably priced compared with London prices. My favourite course was the cod. However the banana dessert is dreamy. We had a relaxed delicious meal. We'll defo come back when next in this area.

It’s great to see a high quality restaurant in this area. The entrance is unassuming, but the interior is very stylish and comfortable. We were presented with a choice of two tasting menus, one shorter than the other, and we opted for the larger one. The gap between courses was spot on for me, and our party found all but the ‘transition’ course between savoury and sweet superb. Aspects I liked about this restaurant were the interior; the food; the fact they could provide an excellent kir royale, even though surprisingly it did not seem to be listed on the drinks menu; the way that wine and water bottles were kept at a serving station and efficiently topped up without the need for prompting. Aspects I felt detracted from the experience were somewhat formulaic ‘patter’ more suited to a chain pub than a fine dining restaurant - on the third time of being asked which my favourite course was and what my plans were for the afternoon I became a little irritated; and the white wine is served at the 8 degrees that seems to be the restaurant standard but is too warm for my personal taste, and let’s face it it will soon warm up for those that prefer it warmer. Price is fair for the quality on offer, but front of house pegs it at one star for the time being.

We were taken as a treat and what a treat it was. Every mouthful to be savored. A really great experience, thanks to all staff involved front and back.

Superb! You would walk past the entrance to this place a hundred times without noticing, as it is an understated door to the side of its plush, parent jewellery store. Upstairs, above the shop, is a beautifully decorated michelin-starred restaurant for which booking well in advance is a must. The food is first-class: innovative, tasty & gorgeously presented. The wine list is well-priced for the level of the restaurant. Service is understated, informative & like the rest of the set-up, unpretentious. Undoubtedly one of the highlights of our gastronomic year.

After trying for about 14 months to get a table, it was fully worth the wait. Food was incredible and the wine pairing was excellent. The team was professional whilst creating a very welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.

Just Beautiful!! The food is a gourmand's dream. Tom has the courage to create original dishes that reflect the influence of his background and the world stage. Scallop with Satay, Tandoori, Wild Garlic etc The dishes are creative, stimulating and delicious. He avoids the bland samey French Modern photocopies of the London Michelin scene and courageously and boldly stakes his impressive originality. Maybe the best opening Canapes i've ever had. And the NO ORDINARY SCHOOLBOY Dessert is THE BEST EVER. Good grief what a sweet. We sat at the Kitchen table and oversaw the whole cooking experience. I was so impressed by how calm and efficient Tom's kitchen is. There's not a raised voice in sight. The staff know their jobs as Tom wisely supervises. Oh and he cooks and serves, don't worry about that. He is a pleasant warm engaging down to earth chap who really gave us personal interest. Tom is a REAL Chef and a lovely man. Not a foul mouthed tv presenter masquearading as an actual Chef.

This was my best ever experience in a restaurant. We ate at the chef's table and were able to observe the calm professionalism before us. Every element of every dish was meticulously prepared to stunning effect. The sommelier paired the wines beautifully to the food. Her pairings were adventurous and absolutely hit the mark on every course. As impressive as the food and wine was the quiet attentive service provided by the entire team. From the moment you step in to the restaurant you are taken care of. The staff were excellent very friendly effecient and certainly knew their stuff. The presentation of the food was beautiful. I was expecting to maybe dislike at least 1 item on the menu but no the food was delicious and i can honestly say the best food ive ever eaten. We also left with full tummies and no trip to the chippy on the way home was needed. Would highly recommend and we are going to try and make another visit in the future.

Upstairs is a warm, comfortable, inviting restaurant with a young, vibrant and attentive front of house. Every course of food was of a deliciously high standard with punchy flavours and restraint when needed, great balance throughout. I would definitely recommend a visit to Lichfield, take in some history, visit the gorgeous cathedral and end the day at Upstairs by Tom Shepherd, Superb! Highly recommend to everyone. We waited 10 months for a booking to come and it was well worth it. Outstanding food, service and atmosphere. You couldn't ask for anymore. Each course was incredible. After watching Tom on GBM my sisters and I managed to book a tasting menu here. The service was faultless, and the food was out of this world. Tom himself was very polite and accomodating, and met us after the service so we could have a chat and a photo with him. Thank you, Tom, for dealing with my star-struck photo papping! Coming from an asian background I always end up asking for extra chilli or flavours in my food, however, at Upstairs, not once did I miss chilli or spices. The flavours Tom has combined were perfect. I have never tasted food as good as this. I have been to another michellin star place, but this is by far the best. Highly recommend

This restaurant has a wonderful balance between delicious food, a lovely ambiance and the most fabulous & friendly team of staff! The number of courses, flavours and portion sizes have been planned to perfection - it was hard to pick a ‘favourite’ as they were all equally as delicious! There was a lovely ambience in the restaurant and the staff kindly talked you through each course. This was a meal for my husband’s birthday, so it was a lovely touch to also have a written card from Tom and the team. Whether you book in advance or manage to get a last minute cancellation, you have to experience this wonderful restaurant!

From an asian family who expect good flavours when eating out and often ask for extra chilli oil, we were absolutely blown away from the flavours and texture combitionations here at each course. Tom was extremely humble and took the time after the service to talk to us about our experience. I have been to other michelin star experiences and, as as indian girl, have experimeted with different flavours, but have found this experience at Upstairs to be the best one yet. The pairings of flavours and combinations is out of this word.

I had informed the restaurant in advance that I was coeliac and would need gluten free options and Upstairs delivered this perfectly. The waitress was lovely, friendly and attentive and reassured me with each course that everything was gf. The food was amazing, such fabulous flavour combinations and beautifully presented. The banana dessert was so nice I didn't want it to end. And we got to have a quick chat with Tom Shepherd at the end of the meal which was an added bonus. You may have to book this restaurant a few months in advance but it is definitely worth the wait.

Amazing experience. Food is just exquisite. Ambience is wonderful. Well worthy of its star and definitely worth the money. Met the man himself while we were there who is personable and very genuine. Highly recommended. The only negative - and it’s a tiny one - the maitre d seemed a bit put out by our not wanting to eat a certain item on the menu. He did offer an alternative but seemed a little fraught. Maybe his attitude could improve slightly to accommodate guest preference but this is a small negative and doesn’t detract from the overall fantastic experience.

Our visit to Rest Upstairs by the talented Chef Tom Shepherd After a 9 month wait, we finally visited Upstairs and we can confirm it was definitely worth the wait! So much so that we've added ourselves back on the waiting list for later this year! The restaurant had impeccable food, stunning decor, and fantastic staff who were very friendly and attentive during our visit. Scroll through the photos for the food, not only was the food presented with immaculate attention to detail but also tasted amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed every course, and we're absolutely full by the end of the evening. There were dishes that we weren't sure of when we read the menu, but oh my did they work! Our favourites: 1. No Ordinary School Boy (Dessert on @greatbritishmenu in 2023) - banana, rum and caramel 2. Orkney scallop with peanut satay, radish and corriander 3. Red Cabbage Gazpacho with Horseradish ice cream (yes, really horshradish ice cream - this dish surprised us as we didn't know what to expect!) 4. Transition - Thai Green Curry (1st pic and not what we were expecting , it was a perfect transition into dessert with hints of green curry flavour but with mango too! Tasted so good and was really refreshing!) Everything else tasted amazing too. Another surprise was the marmite butter we had with the bread course. The taster menu was full of surprises 😍 Thank you to Chef Tom Shepherd and his amazing team! Can't wait to visit again.

On entering the restaurant you are made to feel special, the staff were so attentive nothing was too much trouble. The food was unbelievable, no wonder they have such a waiting list, well worth the wait and honestly have to say the best we have ever eaten. Fine dining at its best, thank you everybody.

Anyone who has watched GBM will know there are few to rival Tom Shepherd for imagination and execution. This is complimented by the excellent team around him, creating a personal and special experience. Flying the flag for fine dining in the Midlands - luckily we’d already rebooked for November!

Lovely front of house staff, excellent cooking, big strong bold flavours and a 10/10 dessert. Tom and the chefs were lovely and charming too.

We have been lucky enough to dine here before as we are fairly close by and our next visit is booked for June, the experience as always was amazing, the food is outstanding and the service and atmosphere fantastic. Maybe our own fault but as we have eaten here before over the last three years we found this time that there are some dishes that we have had two or three times before and as exceptional as they are, and they really are we were looking forward to trying something new.

The restaurant is in a nice room with good ambience and friendly staff. The food was in general very tasty, to my view both the monkfish and deer where slightly over cooked. Overall a well balance menu

Fantastic food and an overall amazing experience. We were lucky enough to sit at the chefs table so chatted to Tom Shepherd and his team of talented chefs all night which made it really special. Every course on the taster menu was outstanding but the piste de resistance was their beef tartar. Mind blowing. Would highly recommend having the wine pairing to expertly compliment your meal. Our first visit but won't be our last. You've gotta go!

Attended a charity luncheon today and can honestly say this was one of the best dining experiences I have ever experienced. The food was beyond outstanding as was the service in this very intimate beautiful location. Would highly recommend a visit to this venue.

Managed to grab a last minute table and the absolute phenomenal Restaurant Upstairs with Tom Shepherd. Wow! Just Wow!! Our food was totally amazing, cooking was faultless, ingredients, textures and taste was totally Devine! We opted for the 10 course tasting, and yes, we were fed, so much value for money! Service was very professional, very cool, but also sophisticated, making us feel like a King & Queen. So well deserved of it’s One Michelin Star, tbh, I would imagine a second Star may come beckoning……….watch this space! Chéf Tom Shepherd, and his amazing team have managed to deliver a faultless restaurant experience, which if you do manage to get your Gold Ticket, and secure your table, you will have memories which will stay with you forever.

What can I say, except Wow! After waiting a while on the waiting list we got a table just in time for my birthday, we arrived to find out it was the kitchen table, even better I got to see my food cooked! I’ve been to a few Michelin Restaurants and Upstairs certainly doesn’t disappoint, it’s probably the best in the area. Adam’s was great when Tom was there but here I think he has upped his game even further. Tom and his Team have created an excellent restaurant that they can be proud of. Each course was superb, but especially the Scallop, Deer and Thai Curry dishes which really stood out. Then there’s “No Ordinary Schoolboy” the GBM dessert that took Chef to the banquet it’s a definite 10/10. The staff are very attentive and look after you very well and make the whole experience a special one. Chef please keep on doing what you’re doing, you have created something special and I can’t wait to return in the future.

Brought as a Christmas gift by our Grandchildren in 2022, literally the first time we could book was for yesterday ! so really anticipated the event. Yes it was very cold outside but didn't expect, or liked that it was just as cold inside ! I really couldn't enjoy my food while my feet were like blocks of ice, and were still cold after 2 hours, other diners around me mentioned the same but our corner stayed cold. The Staff were amazing, the food very nice, the nibbles ! I could have just eaten 10 of those to be honest, sooooo good, other dishes an acquired taste, enjoyed the Venison and the Bread but as I say, I expected a warm hug of an eating experience not the Antartic ! I did see Tom at the chefs table, bet he was as warm as toast :), but you need to look after all of your customers Tom, not just the high payers.... total bill £225, not certain its worth it...but a nice experience.

Cookery as art, yet substantial and delicious served in an unpretentiously lovely dining room by smart, knowledgeable and attentive staff. And if all that were not enough, Tom Shepherd has crafted this Michelin masterpiece of dining at little more than pub bistro prices. Among the best dining experiences I’ve had - and that includes Gordon Ramsay and Noma!

Amazing once again ! Lucky enough to of visited a few times and each time feels like the already high bar raises ! The food is top class - the service and team are spot on and the atmosphere fab ! This pre Christmas meal was excellent - flavours wonderful - and as for that Scallop dish OMG ! Finishing with Toms ‘No ordinary school boya’ dish leaves us content and full . Wine pairing fab and learning experience ! Tom and Team keep smashing it ! Playing fastest finger first for a booking is a must and well worth it ! Til the next time

I love it here. The food is amazing. I never have room to fit the entire tasting menu in but order it anyway and have a bit of each dish. Can’t wait to return. Definitely a fantastic treat and dining experience.

Definitely not the best tasting menu I've ever had. I will eat most things these days, but I only ate half of at least two courses as I just wasn't enjoying them (my wife did the same). I appreciate it's personal preference, but as I say, it's very rare I'll leave anything in a restaurant. The best courses were either the scallops or the chicken in my opinion. The service was fantastic, as was the setting.

What a great and wholesome evening. The food, atmosphere and service were all outstanding. This was Michelin star, but yet still very real food. Not only was it fantastic value, but you can taste and see Tom’s passion in every item on that menu. This is the first high class restaurant I’ve ever been too, that also felt like home.
