This is a Japanese restaurant with a touch of western inspiration, at least for the tasting menu. But just a touch, not too much. As an Eastern Asian I often found merge style overdone, but this one is, surprisingly, all fine. The service was very attentive, maybe slightly too much. I surely cannot say we were not taken care of, though. It‘s hard to find a balance and to their credit, they are definitely not lazy to serve.

My second visit to Umu, with my first being in 2021. That meal left a lasting impression, so I decided to return for an early Valentine’s celebration. We chose the Winter Kaiseki Menu, and every dish was a delight: • The sea bream sashimi was incredibly fresh and tender, perfectly balanced by the tangy dipping sauce. • The seared scallop sushi offered a rich, smoky aroma with a fun crunch from the crispy rice layer. • The tuna belly needed no seasoning—smooth, melt-in-the-mouth, with lingering sweetness and umami. • The standout was the Atsumono hot pot, served in a charming paper nabe over pine-scented charcoal. It instantly transported me back to Kyoto’s serene rivers, bamboo groves, and springtime kaiseki meals. A truly nostalgic and exceptional experience!

True culinary artistry lets ingredients speak for themselves. After dining at UMU, I finally understand this philosophy. As London’s only Michelin-starred Kaiseki restaurant ,UMU delivers unwavering excellence. Their premium seasonal ingredients and creative dishes have won over even the most discerning palates (while other Michelin Japanese only offer Omakase). **Sashimi Selection | Ocean’s Sweetness** UMU’s sashimi is textbook-perfect freshness! The tuna belly melts with rich marbling, salmon dissolves on the tongue, and Hokkaido scallop steals the show with its creamy sweetness. Ingredients are flown in daily, and the knife skills showcase true craftsmanship—each slice precision-cut to millimeter perfection for maximum texture. **Vegetable Tempura | Crispy-Sweet Harmony** Move over shrimp tempura—UMU’s veggie version reigns supreme! Pumpkin, shiitake, and eggplant are cloaked in feather-light batter, fried to order for a shatteringly crisp shell and tender interior. The daikon radish dipping sauce adds a refreshing zing. The chef even adjusts oil temperatures mid-fry to lock in each vegetable’s natural sweetness! **Lobster | Umami Explosion** A **flavor bomb**! The meat is springy and briny, elevated by a masterful sauce that layers umami with every bite. Pure luxury. 🦞 **Shichimi Edo Mae Sushi | A Love Affair of Fish & Rice** Edo-style sushi is the ultimate test of Japanese mastery. UMU’s version pairs traditional vinegared rice with seven-spice seasoning. Golden-eyed snapper and yellowtail boast flawless fat-to-lean ratios, while pickled ginger tucked inside cuts through richness. The red vinegar rice’s subtle acidity harmonizes perfectly with the fish. **Dessert | Zen-Inspired Sweet Finale** The viral "potted plant" tiramisu 🌱—layered with matcha, dusted in cocoa powder and gold leaf—is as Instagrammable as it is delicious. A palate-cleansing yuzu sake dessert wraps up the meal with bright, citrusy elegance. **PS: Kaiseki vs. Omakase?** - **Kaiseki**: Rooted in tea ceremony culture, it’s a seasonal, ritualistic dining experience emphasizing balance and artistry. - **Omakase**: Chef’s-choice dining focused on spontaneity and interaction. Choose UMU’s Kaiseki for tradition and tranquility, or Omakase elsewhere for playful surprises.

Thank you very much to Nick, Ryo and all other staff - for the really wonderful experience that you gave my wife and I today at Umu. The order of the food, the great variety and combination of incredible tastes, the presentation, and the general sensitivity and great artistry of the whole thing - were all a real pleasure. In a nutshell - the food was the best meal of my entire life (we had the winter Kaiseki). The service and people were also really delightful, with a lovely atmosphere. The experience today is one we will never forget. We shall recommend Umu to all we meet.

Umu is a very "high end" restaurant with a nice selection of sushi and meat. Their wine list includes many expensive European wines. A good knowledge of wine is helpful. The service was great, and the staff is quite attentive,

Umu restaurant is nested in the alleyway in Mayfair serving high end japanese dishes. They prioritize the use of local British produce and prepare them using traditional techniques. During lunch hours you can choose from multiple lunch special combinations but also a la carte menu is available paired with daily fresh extras. A bit pricey, but that’s to be expected from this zip code

Unfortunately very disappointing! The ambience is nice but the lighting in the restaurant is really not good. The service was ok but overall a very stiff and rather cold service. However, what disappointed us most was the food. The prices are very high I would say too high. We know very well that quality and service comes at a price, but in this restaurant the prices are not corresponding and are much too high. The best thing, however, was the nigiri, which was really sobering at a single price of around 20 euros for one piece. Personally, I would definitely not recommend this restaurant because the prices are too high! We paid 520 euros for 2 people with water, 2 drinks, 2 glasses of wine and the food in the pictures! The food tastes very good, but the portions are too small. The ambience with its very dark furnishings is ok, but the lighting is really terrible. There are really other great restaurants for this price.

Amazing food but terrible service. We booked dinner online for 8:45pm and once there we were told to hurry to make our order and choose the dessert already as the kitchen closes at 10pm. Why allow someone to book for that time if the kitchen closes soon after? Not all desserts available on the menu. Confusion when ordering the cocktails, confusion with the service in general. The food was great but the service was definitely not worth the money we spent.

The atmosphere is really tight with dark lighting. A lot of servers, according to a strict regime of who does what. The food was good, the nigiri was heavenly and the Wagyu beef was really good. You get real wasabi and that’s a treat. But, it was really pricey. Only go when you have a lot of money to spend because afterwards we when to a pho place. The miso was creamy but so heavy on the palate. And there were some guests that were having some questionable conversations loudly.

What a lovely restaurant. Very pleasant and very good service. We had a special event to celebrate and I wanted to add a bit of a ritual to it and the staff needed no prompting and were happy to accommodate. They even made a special, complimentary desert for us. The food is exquisite, maybe a little expensive, but devine. My only gripe was that they only have one menu. An establishment of such calibre and clients should have two. One with the prices and one without. I didn't want my wife to be choosing or limiting herself due to the price. If she'd had a menu without the prices she would have been more relaxed and experimental. We SHALL be back.

A friend of mine recommended this place as we are into fine dining. We know it was going to be expensive and it was. Just over £450 per head. At that price it needs to be perfect. The things we liked were the tasting menu which was excellent. The fact that we were never rushed at anytime during the evening. The service was decent. The wine pairing was excellent. The big disappointment was the assistant sommelier who was allocated to us. She was awful and well below the standard you expect in a restaurant at this level. She spoke in a whisper with an accent and despite asking her on numerous occasions to speak up so we could hear what she was saying about the wines. One of the benefits of a wine pairing is you learn about new wines. The wines were nice but I learnt nothing about them. The measures were acceptable however on one round we were given short measures. A quick word with the senior sommelier and it was fixed but it shouldnt have been necessary. It felt we were being rationed by her. Other restaurants in this pricing point are generally a little more generous. Also we ordered two glasses of Moet when we sat down. We were brought over a botte of red wine. No similarity with what we ordered. The worst part was my partner was a couple of glasses behind in the wine paring. The assistant sommelier just started taking them away. We had paid for them and it wasnt her place to take them away at least without asking us first. Overall it was a top price dining experience let down by a very poor quality assistant sommelier who was clearly not up to the job. I appreciate the hospitality industry has staffing issues however you cannot charge top prices and deliver a poor quality experience.

Two of us treated ourselves to an early evening dinner at Umu, sitting at the counter. Positives: - Outstanding food. Sashimi selection combined local fish with wonderful tuna. Umu style sushi was a delight in each bite. Tempura was beautifully cooked and the widest vegetable selection ever seen - Beautifully put together restaurant Negatives: - Dreadful drinks - our gin and tonics were mostly ice and flat. My lemonade was all ice and yet still flat. And the water had no ice! Expensive and pointlessly annoying. - Variable service - lots of staff but not all can communicate clearly enough.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the street, the beautiful interiors and welcoming staff set the tone for a great experience. Short walk from Oxford Circus tube stop I’m located in a backstreet of Mayfair. Brother modern minimalistic design with Wood based decor with chefs counter. Set at the chefs counter with little no acknowledgement of the chefs on seating and no interaction between the chef throughout the time sat at the table for the full meal, which is a real shame, compared to other chef table counter experience. Ordered the Bento box with king prawn tempura which was average and poor value for money. The starter salad prior to the bento box was light, small and average. The bento box itself was a combination of four bowls with various veg tempura and the two prawn tempura which was unfortunately cold and limp, vegetable in sauce, some fresh fish with vegetables and a dish of pickled vegetable. This was accompanied with the soy dip with the red soup and a small pickled vegetable. The red soup was excellent as super intense. The Tempura vegetables and the two king prawns was cold and therefore not crispy and the various other four bowls of seafood and vegetables were all very average. The dessert of green tea, ice cream was very nice with the combination of a few fruits. The Petit four of the green tea Madeline at the end was also very nice. The Plum wine spritz was also good. Service was average Found the whole experience rather stiff, unfriendly and lacked warmth to the dining experience. The food portions are small, you do walk away, being still slightly peckish, which may be good for a light lunch or if you are planning to go out for dinner.

Three years ago, I had great experience at Umu: good quality ingredients and helpful staff. However, my visit to Umu yesterday turned out to be an utter disappointment. What’s worse was that I also got food poisoning symptoms after this dinner. The staff seemed indifferent, displaying cold expressions. The person who waited for us at the reception didn't bother assisting guests, did not even hold the door but just let it slam on us. The overall attitude was exceptionally cold and unpleasant. The sushi chefs showed no passion or respect for the food and lacked courtesy towards the guests. The kitchen counter prep top was in disarray. We looked at the Course Menu, there were typos on the menu, waiters and waitress stood afar and chit chatted, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. The worst part was the sushi chef's casual and careless preparation of the food, making me feel: "I don't care about you; I just want your money." The ingredients are fine, but not worth their price. The cooking/preparation is horrendous. We ordered two uni nigiris, even the width of the seaweed is different. Lobster Tempura has very thick and non-crispy, floury coating. The grilled eel tastes gamy. After eating, I experienced food poisoning symptoms. I had very severe diarrhoea two hours after the meal and lasted the whole night. Today I had mild fever and needed to rest in bed to recover. The only nice element was the male waiter who assisted us in ordering foods. Other parts of this restaurants were far from the Michelin standard. We spent above £400 and got upset tummy and fever. Save you money and health, stay away from this rip off.

Went here while traveling to London, and did the tasting menu. Was very excited, considering it was highly rated food and service. We did the tasting menu, at £250 a head, and got 8 courses. Some of the food was amazing, while others were lackluster. The monkfish course was very dull, with little taste. The service was okay, but we sat there for 20 minutes at the end before stopping someone to ask for the bill. And then another 10 minutes before they picked up the bill with the card. All in all, definitely not worth such a high price tag. I’ve dined at many other Michelin restaurants, and this disappointed me. If prices were half of what they are, it may be worth it. Would suggest trying somewhere else.

Left feeling robbed, even by Mayfair standards! Frount of house is probably the most unwelcoming man I've had in any London restaurant. He didn't welcome us, just made it clear we had inconvenienced him by bringing a baby, even with the restaurant being near enough empty (which it remained for the lunch service, clearly people have caught on that this is a place to avoid). Our waiter and sommelier were really nice and helpful, however the food was extremely below par to most Japanese restaurants in London, the sushi lunch plater the nigri was over powered by other ingredients, and just wasn't special. The bento box was a complete joke, the sashimi was basic, the cooked veg tasted as if a bottle of sauce poured over it, everything was bland and the fish its self was okay. Extremely over priced for what you get, Roka, Nobu and the Hamyard Japanese and 90% of local sushi joints are so much better, better greeters, food, price and vibe. It's left me feeling conned out of £500 (two people), I don't know how this place is on the Michelin guide. I'd love to know how many people return?

Location senza particolari spunti, tanto personale. Went for lunch as couldn’t afford dinner so this is the lunch menu review at this fabulous Michelin-star restaurant. FOOD So we got two bento boxes and a sushi platter of 10 assorted sushis for the three of us and it was plenty of food. Each bento box comes with a salad, a miso soup and a dessert in addition to the box which justifies its price of £45 for the vegetarian box, £65 for the regular box. I wouldn’t be able to tell you what was what but everything tasted super fresh and delicious; which is what you are paying for. They had some very special miso soups id never tried before also. The sushis were super tasty, each bite a different fish and frankly all tasted great. We received some extra desserts on the house at the end and I must say their desserts are outstanding. The Japanese tiramisu with sake is crazy, I thought I was eating a plant! Overall very glad to have tried this place. Not sure ill come back often as its still insanely expensive but if you can afford its fantastic. STAFF/SERVICE I felt it was a bit slow for a Michelin-star restaurant and none of the waiters explained to us what our dishes were which would have been useful. One of the waitresses didn’t speak great English which made it harder for us to communicate. We were not offered more water. Small things you would simply expect from such a high end restaurant which commands such high prices, even if it’s only a cheaper lunch menu.

Umu offers a rare gem: authentic Kyoto-style kaiseki. The elegant ambiance, flawless ingredients, and Michelin-star status elevated my dining journey to new heights. Umu is a true testament to the artistry of kaiseki, a culinary treasure that is hard to find outside of Japan. Umu created an enchanting atmosphere, leaving an indelible memory of an extraordinary gastronomic experience.

Das Essen war sehr gut. Allerdings nicht immer einfach zu verzehren oder nur auf nochmaliges Nachfragen wurde es erläutert.

It was ok, pretty average taste palette. Not sure how they got a Michelin star. Service is also average. In my view, there are better places in London for that kind of price.

The food here was a exquisite. All dishes were worth it. My favourite was of course the Wagyu and the dessert. An impressive dish was also the Tuna…they had 3 different parts of the tuna, which was interesting to taste the different textures. I would say the toilets need a bit of work though…especially as this is a michellin star restaurant. But other than that the service was top tier and the entrance to the restaurant was like no other, truly inventive.

The staff are really lovely, and the food, especially the nigiri were really great. I have to say however that the place does seem a bit aged and and the food itself perhaps has lost its competitive edge perhaps since it was introduced and I’m sure at the time was more special. I have eaten all over the world and do so regularly and I’d say theres a lot a of other Japanese restaurants without Michelin stars and less expensive that are superior to Umu in service, unique product offering and refined flavours. I was a little disappointed if I’m honest. The cocktails were certainly nothing to write home about either. The best items we had were the nigiri and the deer. Service was ok but not excellent for a restaurant of that calibre.

Me and my husband went there for dinner… the manager pushed us to order more food because he said was not enough, we spent 500£ For just two people and right after the dinner we felt sick from something that was not good. Definitely not recommended!!!!

Most people who don't give this restaurant 5 stars is because of the price. Why should the price matter though when you are literally getting the best of the best? Umu uses techniques and ingredients which are as good as the best restaurants in Tokyo and it is a real foodie's paradise. Highly recommended for those who appreciate only the best.

The food was okay and not worth the money in my opinion (I am from Japan btw). You can certainly find better Japanese food for more reasonable price in London or Tokyo. The service was also very mediocre.... They made a mistake on my dessert, but they weren't so apologetic. I felt like they wanted me to take the wrong dessert... In the end I was coughing like crazy for a while for some reason, but nobody offered me water until one of the sushi chefs noticed much later. Overall very disappointing. I don't think I will go again, unfortunately.

Best bookable Japanese restaurant in London. There are some new fancy sushi restaurants in London. Generally, they are not bookable and quality is questionable. Food ingredients are best of its kind available. Always a favorite for us

Umu's kaiseki menu is an adventure in flavours. It owes it primarily to fresh products and beautiful Japanese pairings but it's not just that. The autumnal menu features girolles, grouse, in a great hotpot with soba noodles, and a dessert with chestnuts and sonsha which is a beautiful, delicate, end to the dinner. The wine list is extensive and the sommelier a knowledgeable help to it.

I enjoyed Umu. My experience of Sushi to date has been primarily high street chains so I was keen to see and taste what difference a top notch Sushi restaurant could make. I wasn’t disappointed. The food is of the highest quality and immaculately presented. The restaurant itself is quiet and quite intimate and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Two reasons for not giving it 5 stars though. One was the building work going on next door which made it impossible to hear each other. To their credit they did go and have a word and it stopped after 10 minutes. The bigger issue though was the price. We did have the taster menu and the wine flight but the total bill was £2200 for 4 of us. Good though the food was, I don’t feel the price was justified.

What a beautiful experience in London - akin to being in Tokyo. Great food- incredible ingredients that are treated perfectly. I cannot think of one dud dish- across the board spectacular from the fish to the melt in the mouth beef. Can’t wait to return.

Decidedly average Japanese restaurant. We went for its Michelin star. But whilst the fish was undoubtedly fresh, it was very bland. Even the chef creation sushi lacked interest

My husband and I travel to have superb food experiences. We have had them all over the world and in London, where we travel to frequently, we have has some wonderful dinners, Core and Frenchie's to name just two. We were anticipating Umu when we dined there in December. We expected to pay about $800 for dinner and drinks so the expense was not a surprise. The staff were wonderful and very attentive. Unfortunately, the food was ordinary and uninspired. We had the tasting menu and were very disappointed. The Kaiseke menu featured 8 courses and not one was memorable. This was supposed to be an outstanding meal, not like a thousand other Japanese places. For inspired Japanese food, we found Yashim Ocean House to be superior in every way and at one-quarter of the price.

I just don’t know what to say really. The food was distinctly average and the prices were just a joke - £17 for 1 piece of sashimi / sushi?! Really? £60 lobster tempura was 6 tiny pieces of nothing special. The service was very good however, as good as it gets, and a nice room. But with a total bill over £600 for 2 people it was simply nowhere near worth it. I will not be returning.

Excellent Japanese restaurant. Delicious dishes. A must to visit in the heart of Mayfair. We arrived late to have dinner and the atmosphere was a bit quiet. It would be great to listen music as it is a bit boring so it is not comparable...

One of their many branches and one of the original locations. Walthamstow is their latest opening from that last time checked. The service was quick, flexible on requests and food was fresh and lovely, as always. I will recommend to try their new Chicken & Avocado Dragon Roll, whilst it’s still warm. A crispy / crunchy texture. Their Chicken Kaarage, was nice but lack the notes of garlic, soy and other stand out ingredients. However, when paired with a Spicy Mayonnaise Sauce and squeeze of lemon. Then that will elevate the taste sensation. The weakest was their Chicken Teriyaki, when not BBQ with the charcoal, you can tell it’s generic somewhat. Their Taro Special cocktail is a creeper, it’s light and refreshing. Overall, a nice quick stop after a little shopping at Maharishi.

Amazing food and service. This is a hidden gem in the area. The sashimi salad was refreshing and contained quite a lot of sashimi too. The udon noodles were bouncy and the sushi were good too.
