Short walk from Oxford Circus tube stop I’m located in a backstreet of Mayfair. Brother modern minimalistic design with Wood based decor with chefs counter. Set at the chefs counter with little no acknowledgement of the chefs on seating and no interaction between the chef throughout the time sat at the table for the full meal, which is a real shame, compared to other chef table counter experience. Ordered the Bento box with king prawn tempura which was average and poor value for money. The starter salad prior to the bento box was light, small and average. The bento box itself was a combination of four bowls with various veg tempura and the two prawn tempura which was unfortunately cold and limp, vegetable in sauce, some fresh fish with vegetables and a dish of pickled vegetable. This was accompanied with the soy dip with the red soup and a small pickled vegetable. The red soup was excellent as super intense. The Tempura vegetables and the two king prawns was cold and therefore not crispy and the various other four bowls of seafood and vegetables were all very average. The dessert of green tea, ice cream was very nice with the combination of a few fruits. The Petit four of the green tea Madeline at the end was also very nice. The Plum wine spritz was also good. Service was average Found the whole experience rather stiff, unfriendly and lacked warmth to the dining experience. The food portions are small, you do walk away, being still slightly peckish, which may be good for a light lunch or if you are planning to go out for dinner.

Three years ago, I had great experience at Umu: good quality ingredients and helpful staff. However, my visit to Umu yesterday turned out to be an utter disappointment. What’s worse was that I also got food poisoning symptoms after this dinner. The staff seemed indifferent, displaying cold expressions. The person who waited for us at the reception didn't bother assisting guests, did not even hold the door but just let it slam on us. The overall attitude was exceptionally cold and unpleasant. The sushi chefs showed no passion or respect for the food and lacked courtesy towards the guests. The kitchen counter prep top was in disarray. We looked at the Course Menu, there were typos on the menu, waiters and waitress stood afar and chit chatted, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. The worst part was the sushi chef's casual and careless preparation of the food, making me feel: "I don't care about you; I just want your money." The ingredients are fine, but not worth their price. The cooking/preparation is horrendous. We ordered two uni nigiris, even the width of the seaweed is different. Lobster Tempura has very thick and non-crispy, floury coating. The grilled eel tastes gamy. After eating, I experienced food poisoning symptoms. I had very severe diarrhoea two hours after the meal and lasted the whole night. Today I had mild fever and needed to rest in bed to recover. The only nice element was the male waiter who assisted us in ordering foods. Other parts of this restaurants were far from the Michelin standard. We spent above £400 and got upset tummy and fever. Save you money and health, stay away from this rip off.

Went here while traveling to London, and did the tasting menu. Was very excited, considering it was highly rated food and service. We did the tasting menu, at £250 a head, and got 8 courses. Some of the food was amazing, while others were lackluster. The monkfish course was very dull, with little taste. The service was okay, but we sat there for 20 minutes at the end before stopping someone to ask for the bill. And then another 10 minutes before they picked up the bill with the card. All in all, definitely not worth such a high price tag. I’ve dined at many other Michelin restaurants, and this disappointed me. If prices were half of what they are, it may be worth it. Would suggest trying somewhere else.

We went with friends for dinner and we had the tasting menu. Very slow service, the food was average and some of the dishes were not very nice at all. The price was eye watering expensive at nearly £300/head once service charge was added. Certainly won’t be going back and there are many more restaurants in London that offer far superior quality and value for money.

Left feeling robbed, even by Mayfair standards! Frount of house is probably the most unwelcoming man I've had in any London restaurant. He didn't welcome us, just made it clear we had inconvenienced him by bringing a baby, even with the restaurant being near enough empty (which it remained for the lunch service, clearly people have caught on that this is a place to avoid). Our waiter and sommelier were really nice and helpful, however the food was extremely below par to most Japanese restaurants in London, the sushi lunch plater the nigri was over powered by other ingredients, and just wasn't special. The bento box was a complete joke, the sashimi was basic, the cooked veg tasted as if a bottle of sauce poured over it, everything was bland and the fish its self was okay. Extremely over priced for what you get, Roka, Nobu and the Hamyard Japanese and 90% of local sushi joints are so much better, better greeters, food, price and vibe. It's left me feeling conned out of £500 (two people), I don't know how this place is on the Michelin guide. I'd love to know how many people return?

Visited here for our 23rd wedding anniversary as it’s one of our favorite “special places” to eat in London. We had a late booking for lunch at 1.30 - ended up being 10 minutes late - sadly the Kaiseki option is only available until 1 .15. Tried to persuade the Maitre d’ to make an exception but no joy. C’est la vie! Food was exceptional, as always, particularly the toro. Service was fine but a bit on the casual side for a Michelin restaurant. Have to remortgage the house twice to meet the cost but never mind. (Joking aside it is a great restaurant but pretty expensive if you want to get the best out of it)

Went for lunch as couldn’t afford dinner so this is the lunch menu review at this fabulous Michelin-star restaurant. FOOD So we got two bento boxes and a sushi platter of 10 assorted sushis for the three of us and it was plenty of food. Each bento box comes with a salad, a miso soup and a dessert in addition to the box which justifies its price of £45 for the vegetarian box, £65 for the regular box. I wouldn’t be able to tell you what was what but everything tasted super fresh and delicious; which is what you are paying for. They had some very special miso soups id never tried before also. The sushis were super tasty, each bite a different fish and frankly all tasted great. We received some extra desserts on the house at the end and I must say their desserts are outstanding. The Japanese tiramisu with sake is crazy, I thought I was eating a plant! Overall very glad to have tried this place. Not sure ill come back often as its still insanely expensive but if you can afford its fantastic. STAFF/SERVICE I felt it was a bit slow for a Michelin-star restaurant and none of the waiters explained to us what our dishes were which would have been useful. One of the waitresses didn’t speak great English which made it harder for us to communicate. We were not offered more water. Small things you would simply expect from such a high end restaurant which commands such high prices, even if it’s only a cheaper lunch menu.

The staff are really lovely, and the food, especially the nigiri were really great. I have to say however that the place does seem a bit aged and and the food itself perhaps has lost its competitive edge perhaps since it was introduced and I’m sure at the time was more special. I have eaten all over the world and do so regularly and I’d say theres a lot a of other Japanese restaurants without Michelin stars and less expensive that are superior to Umu in service, unique product offering and refined flavours. I was a little disappointed if I’m honest. The cocktails were certainly nothing to write home about either. The best items we had were the nigiri and the deer. Service was ok but not excellent for a restaurant of that calibre.

The food is of the highest quality and immaculately presented. The restaurant itself is quiet and quite intimate and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Two reasons for not giving it 5 stars though. One was the building work going on next door which made it impossible to hear each other. To their credit they did go and have a word and it stopped after 10 minutes. The bigger issue though was the price. We did have the taster menu and the wine flight but the total bill was £2200 for 4 of us. Good though the food was, I don’t feel the price was justified.

Very good food but underwhelming for two Michelin stars and the price tag.

Outstanding kaiseki, unfortunately a bit too Mayfair-ish for what it is, as it would benefit from a more intimate and traditional setting. Very expensive.

Visited for my other half's birthday on a Saturday lunchtime - very sleek, very authentic from how I remember fine dining in Tokyo. Quality of food and presentation were extremely good, staff discreetly attentive. Wine list excellent but heavily marked up, even for a 2*...

We visited this restaurant on a weekend in London. Nothing ‘wowed’ me as the food was very plain and nothing special. We came here as it had two Michelin stars. But really? This is the second time the Michelin star had fooled us. Definitely had...

We went for the keiseki menu. It was 9 (not 8!) courses of thoughtful, perfectly balanced food. The menu was clearly authentic to Kyoto cuisine, but with nods to the west. Be under no illusion, this was true Kyoto food, with modern twists and exquisitely...

Lunch for 2 without sake or wine, just tea. Spent GBP250 for a few a la carte dishes. Was ok but not enough to warrant any Michelin stars (apparently has 2?). Have had better Japanese in average restaurants in Singapore, HK, even Melbourne.

When going to a 2-Michelin Star restaurant, you expect to have a spectacular experience. This was alarmingly not the case. The food was outrageously over-priced. We had to run to the restroom at one point to spit out bad fish. The only saving grace here was the sommelier - he was spectacular.

The sushi was good, service was nice too. Nice option for lunch if your budget is up to the standards. Nice atmosphere, does not feel too uppity, rather relaxed. Prime location, walking distance from Oxford Street.

Exquisite. There are not enough superlatives to describe the dishes on the Autumn tasting menu at Umu. We opted for the Sake pairing which we would highly recommend.

I visited for Lunch to celebrate my birthday. I ordered the chef's sushi selection (10 pcs) and the bento box with wagyu beef. One of the best japanese restaurants in the UK. The sushi melts in your mouth, and so does the wagyu beef. I especially enjoyed the fish belly sushi. The flavors are clean and well-defined, as one would expect from Japanese cuisine. The fresh ingredients are expertly combined. Without exaggeration, I had my pleasure center of my brain fire up when tasting some of the dishes. The atmosphere is very quite and relaxing, giving a shelter from the busy streets of London. The service is impeccable; attentive but not intrusive. At the end, I was surprised with delicious petit four as a birthday treat. Want a Japanese place in London? Look no further!

BULLET FRAGMENTS inside of food are COMMONLY found here......BEWARE! I went to this restaurant to have a dinner with my close friends. We ordered the Keiseki course meals and sushi we wanted to eat, but the Keiseki course dish tasted terrible for a very expensive Michelin two-star restaurant. A more serious problem with the restaurant, was that one of my friends found something like a piece of iron while chewing on one of the Charcoal Grilled meats. It was about as big around as a pencil eraser. We were puzzled and informed of this to a server working at the restaurant. The server initially thought it was edible gold and said it could be eaten. However, soon after he saw it closely again, he said that the piece of iron was a fragment of bullet. Since the wild-hunted animals were caught with a gun, he explained that it was quite common to find bullet fragments while eating such meat. Another server reacted the same way. The response of these servers has embarrassed us as much as a piece of iron from the food. Later, a manager of the restaurant came to us, but he started explaining to us as if he were not very timid. In Britain, he explained that if you get a bullet fragment while eating wild meat, you're lucky. I was not sure whether he meant that we were lucky because we found the fragment of bullet before eating or that we were lucky because we found a piece of bullet inside of food. As we all know, the major issue was that eating bullet fragments could be bad for a person's health, however, they were neglected to mention in advance that they cooked out of game meats and there might be bullet fragments. According to the manager, in the past, it had happened to some of the other guests, but everyone thought they were just lucky. Later, the manager apologized reluctantly to us for this bullet fragment which came out of the meat, but I asked him to leave us alone. It didn't look like a manager-like behavior at a restaurant that received Michelin 2 stars.

Nice japanese-korean styled place to get some noodles and snacks, the drinks are nice too. The restaurant's decoration fits perfectly with the japanese aesthetic and the staff was very friendly too. T
