After all the hype I thought I’d try Umbertos. Ordered fish chips and gravy, and steak pudding chips and peas. Lovely old fashioned beef dripping chips, homemade gravy was ok but just tasted like regular chippy gravy. Steak pudding was enormous and hubby loved it. My fish was average sized and was ok. Overall pleasant and edible

The original Umberto’s was a fantastic chippy. A proper chippy. Queuing out the door at lunchtime. This place is just terrible. Heard the owner today say to a customer ‘Preston is not ready for this’. You can say that again! Over cooked fish and chips. Who wants a steak and Stilton pie? It’s a chippy! Weak mushy peas. Peppered steak chips? Got back and chips were missing! Way too pretentious - I understand the price in the current climate but the quality is shocking. Bring back the old Umberto’s way.

My wife and I both enjoy a dinner/supper of fish, chips and peas. I've lived in Ashton all my life and first had a takeaway from the original Umberto when I was about 20 years old. Since then I've had fish and chips all over the country, Australia and New Zealand and I can say that last night's takeaway was the best I've ever had and Umberto was good. Carry on lads you're doing a great job. You're the best and right on my doorstep!

Not been to Umberto's since Umberto himself sold up. So, on my way home late one early evening I decided to stop in. It was quiet and I order fish, chips and peas. There was a reasonable wait as the fish was being cooked fresh, so no issues there. However, salt and vinegar were interesting with the guy serving picking salt up and sprinkling it on the food between his finger and thumb - a little pretentious for a chippy, I thought but some people might like it. The food came in almost completely recycleable packaging which was nice. I think the only thing that might not be as recycleable would be the lid of the peas. The fish and chips came in a cardboard box with the peas separate. The food taste (after adding more salt and vinegar) was very nice but on ordering the fish I asked for a regular size. I am not sure what planet their view of size came from but the fish was about the size you might expect on a child's portion. I was charged £6.50 for that privilege. However, it was a nice piece of fish with good batter. The chips however, were quite limp and VERY greasy, to the extent that I didn't finish them. The portion size of chips was reasonable but they need to look at how they fry or the type of potatoes they use as I really do not want to eat them again. Finally, the peas were peas - good there and the portion size of peas was quite large by comparison to the rest. Overall not a place I would be rushing back to based on cost for the size of fish and the chips being badly cooked.

Second time getting food from here but it will be the last, got baked fish and it was the tiniest piece of fish ever, chips were just warm,(good job there wasn't many),the tiniest piece of fish and a battered fish that was supposed to be medium costing £9.50 and £7.00 for the baked. Daylight robbery. Spent £32 and there's hardly anything there, in fact it's put me off fish and chips.Oh and I didn't ask for scraps but there was plenty in the box..terrible...

Went to the new umbertos and glad we did. Excellent produce and very well cooked. Had large fish and chips with mushy peas and curry sauce with a cheeky portion of onion rings. All really tasty and worth the higher price point. My only criticism is it was a little on the greasy side but that can be easily fixed with more draining. I would recommend this place and make sure you take a good appetite with you. Would return and can't wait to try the entire menu.

Overpriced mediocre food . With these prices and menu you need to move to the northern quarter Manchester. £4.50 for a sausage is a tad expensive especially in the area the Chippy is situated in . Sorry to say won’t be returning any time soon .

Umbertos Fish And Chip Shop - This lendary chippy had closed when I arrived in Preston, and the news of its relaunch was greeted with sceptical grumbles that it could never recapture its former glory but it did, gaining many rave reviews from media food critics, so I gave it a go and the fish and chips here are genuinely excellent. Great service too - an absolute must for evening visitors to the city. Located just outside the student quarter. Only open in the evenings much of the time.

The new owners have changed this traditional chippy in an attempt to be more up market. Previously, this was a place to get a cheap lunch as a treat, with a really low priced lunch menu. I've just ordered sausage, chips and a barm, which came to £7.50. under previous management, this would have been half the price. The food was ok, but not worth the extra money. We won't be going back I don't think.

I like that the new owners have put thought and effort into trying a new fish and chip concept. We need more people like this. They’re keeping a British tradition going. I was recommended to try the new Umberto via a friend (who is very fussy I may add!) who had been and said it was superb. The chips are delicious and the gravy made from proper stock which is a real rarity. I got two meals for less than £10 and we ate every scrap. It was absolutely delicious. They weren’t shy on portion sizes either. Exactly what we needed on a freezing, rainy night. I’ll be trying the garlic and lemon fish next time and can’t wait for the restaurant area to open. I’ve noticed a few very negative posts about this place and have to say whenever you try anything new you can’t please everyone. Some people just love to moan and hate change yet will never have a go at anything themselves! Don’t let it get you down, guys. You have a great concept and are building a loyal fanbase.

The famous Umberto's chippy on Watery Lane has seemed to be always here despite other chip shops closing down. It used to feed the workers at nearby factories, all now gone. I got steak pudding chips and peas for my uncle which seemed an alright deal at just over £3. However, when he unwrapped it at home we discovered how tiny the portions were. I've seen bigger kids meals! My mother and I both had fish and chips. I'm not sure what the fish was but it certainly wasn't cod or haddock. It wasn't even just one type of fish. It was around 3 different types which had been layered together creating a kind of fish jigsaw, which unfortunately resulted in the middle bits not being cooked properly and both of us getting a small bout of food poisoning.

If you patronise this establishment, you take a chance. You could be satisfied with the food and the attitude of the staff. You could enjoy both, or be utterly disgusted with both. For myself, I have yet to have a portion of chips that was piping hot and not consisting of anything greater than 75% of wrinkled chips, with the rest of the bulk (although `bulk` is really the wrong description, `sample` would be a better description), made up of chip bits and ends. The last time my wife and I had any food from this establishment, we both had upset stomachs during the evening and early the following morning. There used to be a large British Aerospace factory in the area, which was the making of Umbertos because the place used to have folks waiting outside at lunchtime waiting to be served. Everything was freshly cooked because it was sold as soon as a batch was fried and it was hot and tasty. The factory was demolished some years ago though and that was when the rot set in. Most chip shops in the city produce a more palatable offering with staff with better social graces, much better food and better value, but there is no competition whatsoever anywhere near Umbertos and I think that that is the only thing that is keeping the business solvent. The owner really needs to address the quality of the food he dishes out and the social skills of his staff together with consistency of both. Since being closed for a time as a result of the fire last year, he will have lost customers who will have found other, better chippies. He has a lot to do both to get them back and to attract new customers. The way things have gone recently, his business will be lucky if it doesn`t go to the wall one of these fine days.

Just bought Meat and potato pie with chips from this grotty little place. The pie was taken out of chiller and warmed (not very well ) slapped in a tray then a portion or should i say handful of chips dumped at the side. Got home 2 or 3 mins away and everything was cold. This must be the dearest most disgusting chippy i've ever been too. Maybe because of his fire last year they trying to re-coup the losses. NEVER AGAIN will i set foot in this chippy.

Been here a few times and smells gorgeous, they do a lunchtime special which is great for 1.50.However if your visiting after dinner then I would save your money as for a chip shop it is pretty expensive and not above any other chip shops in Preston so don't see why you should pay more.

Everyone knows this chippy however lately prices have jumped up a lot, portion sizes are a joke and the chips are very often burnt or taste like they have been cooked in old oil, and are never ever ready. You always wait 5 or 10 mins. It really is a shame, I used to get a large bag of chips for a few quid and that bag took some eating for two. Now a large portion just fills a small tray and honestly I went to the pizza place over the road half hour later. Sadly Mr Umberto your going to loose a lot of customers. I can't help but feel you should have stayed closed.

Chip shop food cooked like it should be. Umberto has decades of experience and he takes real care in the food her serves. If he is there you can see (from the trained eye) that he coaches his staff correctly on how to create the perfect chip. Battering a fish is not as easy as it looks... but here you will never have uncooked soggy batter or overcooked fish that is disappearing before it is pulled from the fryer. It may seem hard to rate a chippy against another one but Umberto's is a class above the others. Well worth a drive to try him out...

Excellent food, brilliant chips as long as its not new potato season, and the price is excellent at lunchtime. Prices are dearer later on.

I went in saturday lunch time with the intention of ordering lots of food for two adults and three kids. The kids wanted battered sausage and chips. I asked an older lady behind the counter if they did battered sausage to which she snapped 'NOT ON A LUNCH ONLY ON AN EVENING'. I did not like her mannerisms or the the way she spoke this is just bad customer service. I just said strange and left the shop ,maybe she was having a bad day as we all do from time to time, but this was my first time in the shop, and i will not go back . in the end i went to a DIFFERENT CHIPPY spent 18quid and the food was great as was the customer service .

Lunchtime specials @ £1.50 for sausage / pie or pudding and Chips peas gravy or curry is great.Sometimes the chips are hit and miss but on the whole it's ok.That is were the fun stops , after 1pm expect your bank balance to be affected seriously more. This is where a £1.50 meal that is worth £1.50 turns into £5 or £6 and is certainly not worth it.Its a busy little chippy and lunchtime , but I certainly would go after the special offer ends.

Have only been to this shop 3 times, the fist was a couple of years ago and the fish was tremedous, visited again last november-ish, the food had gone very downhill, even though I asked specifically for haddock, I am not convinced that I actually was given haddock. I went again on Thusday, this time the fish, - again I requested haddock, was appaulling, soggy batter and tasteless fish, and not cheap! This shop has "awards" for its products, I can not understand how or why. AVOID

Have tried this chippy a number of times, I always order a large chips that I normally eat over three meals. When I got to the shop it was busy. Another lady before me ordered a regular chips portion and then i ordered a large portion. a guy served both of us and when served the regular portion to the other lady i was like ooh not a bad size. When my turn came I noticed the portion this time was more regular size and I reminded him that I ordered a large portion and he said that’s a large size. Only to get home and realised the large chips were like half the portion I usually get. Not happy with the service, maybe it’s time I go to another chippy shop.

We visited the new venue at The Plough at Eaves. We have been regulars at the original restaurant in the city and was sad to see it go until we had our meal at the new place. We have to say, it’s got been better. Beautiful surroundings with lovely lighting and the food was to die for! Make the journey…. You won’t regret it!
