Umai in Edinburgh, City of

this is my go-to place for grilled salmon nigiri they’re so friendly and the sushi is 10/10 every time.

We had a great time and the owners are extremely nice.

You need to update all your 3rd party booking systems. I had reserved a table for the 30th of September for the 6 Queensferry Street venue, only to find you moved way back in February. The email confirmation says its for the Queensferry site. Please make sure all booking systems you use have been updated.

Staff was friendly and food was great, the chicken katsu was really good 👌🏼

The food was okay, nothing special. Portions are decent, but again, nothing out of the ordinary. The place is clean and the service is really nice.

We experienced so many Asian restaurants on holiday and although we wanted to eat Scottish, we couldn't help but eat Japanese. that was a very good decision. We have been to Umai a few times and have never been disappointed. On the second evening we were invited for sake. Thanks for that. It was a very nice time, with great people and great food. To that I just say Umai and arigatō 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇯🇵🍥

Deliciously prepared food for a great dinner experience! My partner and I had a voucher gifted to us, and we enjoyed a lovely selection of sushi and a great bowl of ramen to share. Everything was prepared beautifully, the portions were very generous and it all looked and tasted delicious! We could not help but ordering extra stuff as we wanted to try everything on the menu! The wine was also lovely and the staff were super friendly and attentive, helping us on making decisions when we ask them for recommendations. We will definitely come back next time we are in Edinburgh!

My son booked a table for four at Umai at 2.30pm on Monday 26th August. On the morning of 26th my son received a message from Umai saying that the booking was cancelled and shouldn't have been taken as the restaurant was actually fully booked. We booked a table instead at the Italian restaurant across the road for the same time. When we arrived at the Italian restaurant we were rather bemused as Umai only had two customers at the time we had initially booked the table! Throughout our time in the Italian restaurant opposite we were able to see that no other diners entered Umai so it was most definitely NOT fully booked. I do not understand why a restaurant would knowingly cancel a booking when we clearly had plenty of space. In fact, after the couple left Umai was empty. Extremely poor customer service and we will not be returning to Umai at any point as they clearly don't want, or need the custom.

Went for ramen, which were overcooked and honestly didn't taste really good. Then I chose the gyozas which were great! Still disappointed though.

the worst ramen we ever had, the main ingredients were sweetcorn and pasta, bland and tasteless. The staff is not very welcoming. Don't be fooled by interior design. LOOKING BACK at the menu my ramen was missing an egg, wakame and narutomaki!

the portions of fish were very generous and it all tasted very fresh. the shrimp tempura had a lovely sweet soy sauce to accompany it on second visit the ramen is incredible highly recommend the pork belly tonkatsu ramen!

I have to say that I completely love the food and I’ve been going a several times to Umai. Unfortunately, the last time I went there (it was like 6:00pm), I was asked for a reservation. I clearly didn’t have one because I’ve just finished work and I really wanted to buy a curry. A guy beside the counter (I guess it was the manager or someone in charge of the staff) looked very upset about it. The lady who was talking to me ask him if he could take my order which he denied multiple times, not offering me a table (which I do understand, maybe the other tables were booked already) and denying an offer from a customer who was willing to share the table with me. I even had to beg him to take my order as a take away. The lady was very nice about it and was trying to be friendly, but this man was not even trying to hide he was not willing to take my order. It was very frustrating. I was allowed to seat in the customer table, the same one that offer to sit with me earlier, while I waited for my food. Then when I had to pay, he didn’t ask me for the 10% extra charge (didn’t even let me have a look at the receipt ) and just charge me with an annoyed look. I’m giving the place this amount of stars because the staff is lovely and I really enjoy the food. But this man should not be working in customer service if he gets upset for having to take an order in a late shift. Really bad experience I have to say. PD: I’m adding some photos of the times that I’ve been there, available to actually sit on a table and enjoy the food.

Hands down this is the best sushi I have ever had. Being veggie but also LOVING sushi its always so hard to find anything which hits the spot, however, they had plenty of vegetarian options I even struggled to decide! The veggie crunch roll was out of this world.

Don't really like avocado so when I asked if it could be left out of certain dishes I was immediately offered an alternative which I thought was very good service

The food was great, as was the service. Was an overall great experience, would recommend the salmon roll.

What I found strange was that I was immediately given a bottle of water upon arrival (which I really appreciated), but the menu stated that the bottle costs £3 and that bottle of water was not included in the bill when I paid (which meant I free of charge).

Amazing food, the sushi is fantastic. One of the best we’ve had.

Lovely atmosphere and great food. We had a Veggie Poke, Miso Ramen, and Tuna Fried Roll which was more than enough for two people at a great price. We also tried the Japanese Whisky blends Nikka Barrel, and Hibiky Suntori. Nikka was strong, Hibiky very smooth. Overall a great experience.

This restaurant is right on our door step and we have been excited and looking forward to it for at least two weeks however our experience was a bit of a disappointment. Food was good but the service was rubbish. We didn’t book as was unable to on the website which is fine. On entry we were standing at the door for at least 5-10 mins before someone came over to greet and seat us. (There were 3 people standing at the bar) From ordering it took at least 30-40 mins to get our food we ordered sushi and katsu curry. We totally appericate it takes time to make however there were at least 3 other tables that came in after us that were served and recieved their food before us. We also had to ask for a second round of drinks…. They also automatically added service charge to the bill. It’s a shame as if the service matched the food we could have been regulars . We are 5 mins away and young professionals so this place has lost out as we could have spent lot on repeat custom.

Had a lovely meal this past Friday. The tonkotsu ramen is delicious with high quality pork, noodles, and other toppings. The hosomaki roll was tasty as well. There’s a unique and reasonably priced cocktail menu. The ambiance is bright and inviting, perfect for dates or dining out with friends and family.

It was a pleasant enough evening but the food lacked authenticity - dry beef in ramen, sadly rolled hosomaki.

I ordered the veg gyoza and vegetarian ramen. The food was good, the service was okay. They also charge 10% service charge which is optional but automatically added if you don’t ask for it to be removed.

Food was okay - table of vegetarians so cannot speak for the quality of fish/meat. Nothing mind blowing, but the dessert was really bad unfortunately (strawberry cheesecake). There’s a 10% service charge, they were okay when we asked to take it off, still, not my favourite thing. No option to differentiate tipping from paying (by card) which makes me speculate that all money goes to the business, rather than tipping the staff.

Ordered for 4 people for pick up. The restaurant was super welcoming and everything was very well packed. No spillages! The food was amazing and super fresh: the katsu curry and the mix combo salmon and tuna were highlights. All the food tasted amazing and incredibly fresh.

Lovely modern interior, delicious fish, great service! Dining at Umai feels a bit like being on a fancy vacation - can't put my finger on why but it reminded me of luxury restaurants in Malta, haha.

Stale fish, bad service, incorrect change Starting on a positive the veggie poke bowl was good and the Tonkotsu ramen was alright though small amounts of pork and very chewy. Having a sesame allergy, meant that I was very limited to the options of meals, it being sushi only. Which was okay it still left me with options. We ordered the mix combo salmon and tuna sushi meal. The tuna was so chewy and had a RANCID after taste which was spat out to our disgust. Having tasted a vast amount of sushi I have to say this is the worst tuna nigiri I’ve ever tasted. We politely asked the server to which he swapped it for salmon only just to over hear them muttering under their breath. (We were sat right beside the bar/counter area, so very obvious must I add). Then I was questioned “you don’t like tuna” if I didn’t like tuna I simply wouldn’t have ordered that dish… Forwarding my recommendation to quality check their tuna however I was looked at with disgust as if I was the problem. We were not once was an apology made. Not once were we asked if our meal was okay which I find odd as most places tend to make sure their customers are happy with their meal. However, this was completely different towards a couple that must have been invited to the restaurant as we could clearly see the treatment was different. Specifically when ordering our server left midway to serve this couple to their table which was unprofessional but forgivable. Complementary Prosecco and completely different service were given to these customers but I guess due to the fact that they must have been invited due to the fact their cameras were out. No doubt it being a true reflection of the service regular customers were getting. We then asked for the bill which came to a total of £67.53 including service charge. Naturally we waited for our change… 15 minutes later we had to remind the staff we were still waiting on our change, watching them accept our money and carry on with other tasks. Assumptions were made as it was only a small sum but we factored in the service charge that was already set and did not agree to further our tip. This should be discretionary and change should be given promptly and up to the customer should they wish to leave it. Finally when our change came, to our amazement we were given the wrong change, how hard is it to give correct change, I understand the pressures of having many tasks but this was ridiculous considering the service we were given. I have never been in an establishment with such bad service and disregard for specific customers, if only we were of status I am sure this would not have been the case. I definitely will not be back in the future.

Massively disappointed in their equivalent to a Hell Ramen (Chilli Ramen). Tastes off compared with most other ramens I’ve tried. Their tonkotsu was better but still not great.

We went to Umai while on a short trip to Edinburgh - it was fantastic. We had the Tonkotsu Ramen, the Spicy Chilli Ramen, and Chicken Katsu, with a side of the fried gyoza. All three dishes and the gyoza were amazing. The hostess Jessica, and host Jose, was extremely attentive to us, and very friendly. She accommodated us even though we arrived fairly close to closing time. Jessica's recommended Yuzu Sake is a must try! The food was so so good, and we got to meet chef Sandeep as well, who was very enthusiastic about the food.

We ordered through Uber eats at 8pm it got to 9:20 and the food was still being prepared so I called again to ask as we had been waiting for an hour and twenty mins and she said the food would be ready in 10 mins. After 10 mins it still hadnt arrived so I called the lady again and she said it was going to be 20 minutes more. She was so unbelievably rude and hung up half way while I was speaking. The food eventually came and it was two hours we had to wait before it came. The lady was so rude and didn’t even apolgise on the phone and just acted as if I was pestering her. The food came and my ramen had no flavouring at all and the food was not worth the money nor the two hour wait. Feel incredibly let down and disappointed at a waste of money and time that they clearly didn’t care one bit about. Not the best customer service at all.

Sushi was delicious and service was speedy. We went on a Friday night and it was busy so I would recommend booking! I liked how all our sushi came on one plate which is great if you’re sharing.

Thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Delicious, flavoursome food. Left at the end still wanting to try more.

I love the whole atmosphere of the place, I really like the artwork on the walls and the music. The food was great, I tried both the Umeshu and Yuzushu sake and they were delicious. The traditional dessert was also really good! The staff was friendly and fast.

Sushi was awesome, ramen was decent and service was excellent. The waitress (from Italy) is superb! She’s attentive, polite and made our experience completely pleasant! We had a great time (thank you!) and wished we could visit one more time if we had more days in Edinburgh! Will recommend this place to family and friends 😄

Me gustaría compartirles mi experiencia en cuanto al servicio prestado por un mesero de Umai sushi. Debo destacar el ambiente y lo bonito del lugar, sin embargo, debo hacer hincapié en la atención que se me dio desde el momento que llegué al local. El día jueves 21 de diciembre alrededor de las 8 pm, llegué a Edimburgo y mi primera parada fue Umai sushi. Al ingresar, consulté si me podía sentar en la barra y pedir take away, en ese momento el mesero me respondió de una manera muy déspota e irritante “te lo vas a servir aquí o llevar”. Dejé pasar esa mala educación, pero luego consulté si le podía agregar un ingrediente al poke, su respuesta fue “pero cómo le vas a agregar eso” con una cara de desprecio y gritando. Esta situación me descoloco, no entiendo cómo una persona de cara al público puede responder de esa manera tan agresiva. En ese momento pensé en retirarme y no consumir nada pero venía de un viaje largo y con maletas por lo que decidí ordenar de todas maneras. Finalmente el mesero aceptó de mala gana agregar el ingrediente. Debo destacar la atención de la otra mesera que se encontraba en el sushi, ella me atendió de muy buena manera y amable. Sobre la comida, buena pero no espectacular.

This is a cozy little spot with delicious and flavorful broth and ramen perfect for cold nights in Edinburgh! Food was a 5 the sushi was fresh the broth was delicious I am dreaming of this place. Our waiter was satisfactory but def not enthusiastic or passoniate about his job lol.

Easily the best sushis and ramen I've had in town. They make their own noodles from scratch too! The service was incredibly polite, professional and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxing and decorations were beautiful too. I can't wait to go again, strongly recommend.

I’ve never had a bad tonkotsu before. The broth was good but the noodle portion size was tiny, and the pork belly was hard and chewy. Not a great experience.

Sushi and fried sushi excellent, noodle soup not brilliant.

Had their chicken paitan ramen. It's okay compared to ramen in UK but lacking in Asian countries. The broth wasn't fantastic and the noodles were ok. The chicken was cooked in a more westernised way than a Japanese way.

My first time in Edinburgh, needed food. I found this place very last minute. I wanted to give a try. No booking needed. My partner and I had a table straight away. Staff was friendly and helpful, smile people were working here. The menu had a good variety with bursting flavors. Ramen was sublime! Sushi was fresh made. The food quality was amazing. Cozy restaurant with amazing sushi! The place is not huge but has enough tables, and serves very great sushi for decent prices. The Salmon Ramen is my favourite dish here, and the sushi combos are great!

Been there a few times and it is one of my favorite places to eat out in Edinburgh. The staff is very friendly and the place is cozy and clean, it is also very well decorated and is fun to see a place like this. The food is simply amazing, I always ask for the tuna and salmon combo of sushi and is tastes good. If you like sushi and ramen this is a great place to go.

Lors de notre voyage à Édimbourg, nous nous sommes laissé tenter par ce restaurant pas très local mais qui nous faisait vraiment de l’œil. La décoration fait voyager tout comme le magnifique plateau que nous avons pu déguster. Les prix sont raisonnables pour des sushis. Si vous aimez la gastronomie nippone, c’est l’endroit qu’il vous faut.

We found this place very last minute but it was awesome. The menu has good variety with bursting flavors which left my group stuck on what to order. I highly recommend the red chili ramen, fried salmon roll, tuna tartare and salmon poke bowl. Our waiter was also great, nice guy and good at his job.

Hands down the best sushi I ever had, simply scrumdiddeliumptous! Presentation, taste, service - all top notch! Not at all pricey compared to the quality of the food, and the staff was super friendly.

Didn't go for sushi, wich we probably should have since the majority of people gave good ratings for it. Gyosa were tasty and nice. Tho the ramen however was mediocre, and portions were rather small. The waiter were really polite and pleasant. 😊

We took sushi's (chef's choice), Chicken Paitan and veggie Temaki. The Sushi was excellent 👌

The food here is delish and such great options for the price. Everything was super fresh, came out quickly and looks beautiful. The staff aren’t the most outgoing or friendly but that’s okay. The overall atmosphere is good, non-traditional!
