This place has been reopened for about a year now so not sure why it still says closed. This is my favourite dim sum restaurant in Scotland. We visit every couple of months and they are very consistent. Best to book in advance as there aren't many tables so they do get busy. Food is delicious and authentic Cantonese cuisine. They have recently increased the minimum card payment to £35 so best to take out cash beforehand.

El único inconveniente es que la música era bastante ruidosa aparecía antes de irnos (nos pareció que podría haber sido una táctica para hacernos salir) pero no nos preocupó demasiado, ya que habíamos terminado y quería la factura de todos modos! If you can get past the bad service from the lady that runs the restaurant, then boy, is there some great dim sum waiting for you. The first time I came here with my girlfriend, I was very surprised by how rude she was to us and other customers that came in. She wasn't the slightly bit friendly. While we were there, she turned away two couples almost an hour before the restaurant was to close. She didn't offer them any explanation, just rudely told them it was too late. It's not great policy to turn away paying customers an hour before the restaurant closes with no explanation or invitation for them to return the next day. My guess is that she wanted to get out on time, and didn't want to honor the restaurant's stated hours. Despite this, the food was outstanding. We've been back a few times since, and the service is a hit and miss. The other people who work for her are very friendly, and she has only marginally improved, so don't come expecting to feel particularly welcome. The second time we came in, we ordered two of the ho fun noodle dishes. When they came out, they were the wrong noodles entirely. When I told her the dishes weren't what we ordered, she said, "I told you we were out of the ho fun." She had not told us that when we ordered. She didn't apologize or offer to get us something else. I would never have ordered the noodles that she chose to substitute (they were rather bland), so it would have been nice if she had actually told us that they were out of our first choice and let us pick what we wanted instead, if anything. I didn't like that I was expected to pay for two dishes that I didn't even order. So, like I said, if you can put aside the abrupt service, then the food is really, really good.

Popped in with my boyfriend to have some dinner. At the beginning, I wanted to go to my another favourite place but we agreed on coming to Stack. And thankfully I followed my partner's idea. Initially, we wanted to eat 5 sets of dim sums ...we ended up with 7 to 8 as I recall. The meals were just speechlessly good - such a great combination of flavours enclosed in small pieces of dough. I just wanted more and more but come on, we all need to meet some limits. This place has recognition despite slightly hidden location... and not surprised about that. If you are looking for an unusual meal to consume, go there! I think it's the best place for dim sum you can possibly find in Edinburgh. The service was nice too - very decent like for a place of that size with a constant turnover of people coming.

I was recommended this by a friend from work and so glad it is found. It is quite a residential but of Dalmeny Street so you do need to keep walking till you get there, I thought I may have missed it. I would recommend booking as even on a Tuesday night they were on their 2nd cover for most tables and turning people away. There were 5 of us eating and they recommended we choose 2 dim sum each as well as a couple of mains (rice, noodles) to share between us. We were worried in case it was too much but worked out well - we even ordered another dim sum and it came very quickly. You almost need a menu to stay on the table to remind you of what you have ordered as we kept forgetting so did a bit of dim sum roulette but they were all amazing so couldnt go wrong. I will definately be back for more as well as recommending it to others to try out. It is so reasonable as well - ours was £75 for 5 people, plenty of dim sum, people drinking beers as well as a couple of water.

This restaurant is located in a residential area off Leith Walk. The food was good, but portions were small. Several items on the menu were not available because it would "take too long" to prepare. While visiting Edinburgh, our friend had a desire for Chinese food, so we looked up the best Dim Sum restaurantIn town and Stack surfaced. Located in Leith, it offered a great side adventure to our tour of the Britannia in Leith. It is a small, family owned business, 6-8 tables maximum. When we first arrived there was only one other table there, which made us a bit uneasy, but soon the locals started piling in and the whole place became abuzz. The service was very good and the woman serving us helped us choose various dishes, advising us on best selections and also the proper number of dishes to make a satisfying but not overtly filling lunch.Food arrived promptly and was simply delicious. We enjoyed every dish that was brought to our table. It was so refreshing to take a step away from the bustle and somewhat commercial atmosphere of Edinburgh to enjoy a delicious, well prepared meal in a warm local establishment. If riding the Majestic bus, take stop # 7 and walk back north on Leith Walk a few blocks to Dalmeny St. When returning to Edinburgh, be sure to wave at the driver as he approaches or he may not stop! Fortunately, buses run every 10 minutes.

The pork and ginger pot stickers were amazing - probably the best I've had - so I didn't expect anything to top them. Then they brought out the steamed scallop & spinach dumplings. Nowhere to hide with a dish like that because there is no sauce and the wrapper is so neutral. Really fresh subtle seafood flavours - so good. We had more pot stickers & steamed prawn dumpling because we are greedy. The prawn dumplings were just as well prepared. Not a duff note in the seven different dishes we tried. Place is small & simple but service helpful & prompt. Cliental leans heavily Chinese, which is generally a very good sign, and so it proved here.

We went here as we live nearby and heard so many good things about it. The service was alright, could have been a bit friendlier, but I go to China often and it's similar to the service I've experienced there. The food was very tasty, however quite on the oily side. The noodles tasted mainly like the soya sauce they used to cook them in, but it was still enjoyable. The spring rolls were great, especially the Vietnamese spring rolls and the duck spring rolls. However what really put me off from returning here was the state of the toilets. Both the men's toilets as the women's toilets (as my wife told me afterwards) were very dirty, with layers of dust and bottles of cleaning products everywhere. When I wanted to wash my hands I found out there was no soap left in the bottle. In the women's toilets there was a stack of spare chairs, which made for awkward sitting down. My wife joked afterwards that she hoped nobody was touching these chairs with poo hands and they would be used in the restaurant on a different evening! This really makes me wonder what the state of their kitchen hygiene is, but maybe I really don't want to know!

Order any dish on that menu and you will find the true meaning of eating for pleasure. We ordered a mix of dumplings and dim sum and won ton and...and...and. Simply we were greedy. Warning though this place is for real foodies who like quality, authentic culinary experience...so if you are into posh lavish premises and love to be pampered by a lovely smiley waiter or waitress and don't care that much about the food: don't go there! Because the Lady boss in charge is not there for the "Blah-Blah" ,"the suit you sir" or the "nice to see you to see you", she is direct efficient and straight to the point, and being given how busy it is sometime I understand she may not have time to smile (but she always make sure you are satisfied with the food!).

Tucked away halfway along Dalmeny Street just off Leith Walk is the Stack Dim Sum restaurant. The unpreposessing exterior shouldn't put you off, this place is a great find. It's a small cafe style establishment that is probably full if there are thirty people in it! We ordered various dim sum dishes which were all plainly cooked to order and piping hot as if just out of whatever they were cooked in. The two of us also shared a dish of mixed seafood noodles to finish off which were absolutely superb. The whole experience was great value for money and the staff were very friendly: they made us feel very welcome. We've been looking for a new Chinese Restaurant to call our own ever since our pervious regular haunt went downhill and ceased to be worth visiting. Stack is that restaurant.

Having seen some really good reviews for this place and discovering it was a short ten minute walk from our house, we decided to check it out. Nice to see a good selection of different dumplings, and more traditional dishes. For the price I thought the food was a bit basic and the portions a bit small, but the general quality was nice.

Saw loads positive reviews and decided to give it a try as dim sum lover. Food was drenched with oils and there was a hair on my chicken. Since stepping inside til sitting down, everywhere I looked were dirt. Not being picky, but this place need a thorough cleansing. The fabric of chair cover seemed being there for many and many years. I noticed the staffs were looking at their phones all the time and not paying enough attention to their customers. Well, it would be more attentive if you pick up some mop to clean the chair and the floor. Definitely not going back again.

I've been a few times to this place as the reviews can be quite good. I think it serves the best Dim Sum I've ever eaten, however, I think I will try other places from now on, as the woman who works there is so very unfriendly and abrupt, it makes for quite an unpleasant atmosphere. Also, the loos are not so nice, filthy towel and very grubby looking, freezing in the cold months too. Try the place for the food only, no ambience or nice service or pleasing decor.

We had high expectations for Stack Dim Sum after all the good reviews but we were extremely disappointed as the dim sum served up was no better than what we normally buy from any Chinese supermarket. Almost £50 spent and we were still hungry when we left.

I visited with my sister on 14th Aug. This is a little gem of a place, tucked away unassuming lay in a less than upmarket part of the city. Amazing Chinese food, so delicious and very good value. We hadn't booked which in hindsight we should have done, as it is small, but the proprietress was not very accommodating and it took a guest to offer that she would be finished in five minutes and we could have her table. Somewhat reluctantly the proprietress suggested we came back after 10 minutes. She was helpful though in explaining to us about the food and we'd definitely go back....but book first!

The menu isn't huge, but we've ordered mostly different things on each of our three visits. The food seems very fresh, and we like that there are different kinds of foods (not just a few steamed dumplings, but a variety of options including seafood, meat, vegetarian; fried, steamed, boiled; etc.).You should expect to order about three menu items per person. We are a couple, and always order six things. We leave feeling satisfied but not over-stuffed!

Ok this is not my first visit here, but there are things you only notice after a few visits..On arrival we were seated next to the entrance, I took the seat next to the window which had a deceased insect on the window sill (quite clearly dead) ok, lets over look this. My chair had a cheap plastic cover over it which had torn with over use, but to be honest I'm not here to talk about the deco. The food was hot and delicious and arrived in good time, the service however was what I had a problem with.First of all when serving dishes to your guests you should always offer condiments, or at least ask "is there anything else I can get you?" (soy sauce/chilli oil perhaps?) Second, why display in your front window that you accept credit cards, if you ONLY accept them if the bill comes to £25 or above? Surely if this is the case then you would inform your guests of this fact BEFORE they sat down? Our bill came to £24.70, so I asked the Manager if I could round my payment up to £25 or even add on a tip, to which she replied:"No sorry, we can't do that, or you can add something else on the menu like a can of coke (£2!!) to your bill and take it away"So you can't round up my bill by £0.30, but you're willing to charge me £2 for a can of coke to take away??Perfect logic.....I went to the ATM on leith walk, paid and left. To summerise : If you like good food, dead insects, ripped chair covers and POOR customer service then your on to a winner.

My wife and twin three year olds and I went here for Sunday early PM Yum Cha. Good reviews so wasn't abashed. From the moment we set foot in the place we were made to feel unwanted. The woman there (the big cheese, I think) was as cold and unfriendly as could possibly be, without being out and out rude. I think she was put off by my kids (what did they do?) or maybe she just hates her life, but hers is no way to run a restaurant. We will unlikely go back. The food was excellent but the experience was seriously negated by her attitude. The chap who was there was pretty cool too. I think he was cowed by her. FGS man, grow some nuts and defy the tyrant!

We have visited Stack on several occasions and our most recent trip was great as always. This place is authentic, so not to everyone’s taste, and certainly not your standard Cantonese fair! That said if you like real Chinese food you will never be disappointed. Obviously Stack is all about the Dim sum but leave some room for a plate of Ho Fun (noodles) as well - delicious! Be warned, all Dim sum is made fresh on a daily basis; thus going earlier rather than later in the evening is better before they run out of everything. Finally Stack has been around for a few year now and could do with a bit of TLC as its looking a bit shabby around the edges. To some this doesn’t matter (us included) but a refurb would certainly make it more appealing to others.

You are quite unlikely to come across this restaurant unless you live nearby or have searched for it first but it is most definitely worth a visit and one of my favourites. I usually pop along for dim sum once a month for lunch. Better dim sum than anywhere else I have tried in Edinbugh and even in London. Stack serves consistently good food which I believe is largely home made (most other restaurants have the same frozen dumplings). They have a good menu selection too. To look at, Stack isn't particularly glamorous but all the effort goes into the food (which is fantastic). It's nice to sit somewhere that isn't pretentious once in a while! The restaurant is pretty small but never quiet, I'd book in advance to avoid dissappointment.

Stack Dim Sum has been serving dishes made to order for quite a few years now, and I've never been disappointed when I've eaten there. Last time was at the end of May. We showed up just before 8pm and surprisingly all tables were empty - this was unusual as they have a fairly steady trade throughout the day - locals in for carry outs, families giving their kids a tasty introduction to Dim Sum and some other Chinese dishes. Or folks who'll travel just for Stack's delicious delights, like me. Though the last bank holiday weekend of May is not the ideal time to try to cross Edinburgh, with the city on a virtual lock-down for the marathon. While we were there though, other tables filled up and a couple of carry out orders came and went.I first found Stack from a poster in the window of the Chinese supermarket at the end of Dalmeny Street across Leith Walk - worth browsing and shopping if you've never been. When Stack first opened you were given an ipad tablet thing to browse the menu - that's gone, and the menu is now just printed - it also seems a bit more limited than before, but I could be wrong. Granted, it's a fairly limited selection of Dim Sum and a few other dishes - maybe only 50 or so in total. But you can't go wrong, whatever you order. Experiment and mix - and go back to try more. The waitresses are very friendly, prompt and helpful - when we ordered 5 or 6 Dim Sum, we were offered the almost obligatory Chinese restaurant rice (or noodles here too is an option), but were told we had ordered enough for two people anyway, and if we had wanted rice or noodles that would have taken maybe half an hour - in other words, it wasn't being kept warm or going to be heated up, it would be made fresh to order.Just like the Dim Sum - all made fresh to order. The dishes we ordered came one or two at a time - as the cook prepared them and they were ready, he slid them through a hatch from the kitchen. It makes for a sharing experience - and such is one of the joys of dim sum anyway.Stack is a smallish space, so it may be best to book - as it turned out we didn't need to this evening, but we had called only half an hour before going. I'm a tea drinker (a serious tea drinker, not just builder's teabags of floor sweepings with copious sugar and a splash of milk), so it's good to see a choice of oolong, pu ehr and jasmine at Stack. Almost any other Chinese restaurant only offers jasmine. Surely the Chinese themselves don't drink only jasmine... So why is this the only tea served at most places? Walk into any decent Chinese supermarket and you see at a great selection of Chinese teas. Ok, rant over. And so, is Stack better than the reputed grandaddy of Dim Sum dumplings in Edinburgh, Chop Chop? In my opinion and for my money, yes. Sure it's got a smaller menu, and it's a smaller venue, and it's less well known (and hallelulah for that), but for a good meal - if not some of the home-made dumplings, then for some home-made ho fan rice noodles (try the beef choice) - Stack stacks up handsomely. Highly recommended. (Their card payment reader can be a bit temperamental, though, so take cash, or be prepared to go along to Leith Walk to an ATM.)And another plus - Out of the Blue is almost next door. Parking can be a bit difficult if you're driving, but you can always find somewhere fairly close.

Wow, this little cafe in a local residential neighborhood is an absolute gem of a find. Authentic Hong Kong dimsum and dishes, made by Hong Kong people. Looks to be owned and operated by a husband and wife team. We ordered Beef Chow Fun and Pork Ribs with Chicken Feet in Hot Pot rice.....had not eaten that or seen that on a menu anywhere in UK or US. It was fantastic. Make reservation ahead of time if going at busy lunch or dinner times (especially weekends) as they only have 7 tables.

This place is in my neighbourhood and so glad it is - go here quite a bit when want something fresh and not heavy - having not tried dim sum anywhere else, can't compare to other places, but always get seafood stuff here and is gorgeous. Don't come here if you want opulent surroundings or a fancy meal out, the decor & lighting is basic, more like a cafe, but doesn't bother me at all with food like this. Do come here if you want quality dim sum. Staff great - always get a friendly welcome and happy to call this place a local favourite :-)
