Kampong Ah Lee Malaysian Delight in Edinburgh, City of

Char kuay teow was ok not great. It didn't have any wok hei taste. I never had CKT with chicken and squid and found the combination a little strange. The teh tarik had barely any tea taste and had to be redone. *Don't order the tea. Service was great and restaurant had a nice decor but when it comes down to it its all about the food and honestly it was a bit of a letdown.

Came here solo on a weekday evening for dinner without a booking, it was half full. Well decorated, felt clean-ish. I tried their vegan rendang lamb with some Hainanese rice (dishes don't come with rice). It was delicious. I hope to be back to try something else on the menu next time. Service was good.

Here's the setting. Second day of Chinese New Year, the first of which I'm overseas, away from home. I enter hoping to escape the on a chill and immediately felt welcomed. Familiar festive tunes, the cozy wood veneer, and most of all the Milo cans stacked behind the counter. I knew this was the place. The amicable aunty took my order and it hadn't been 10 minutes when my food came, piping hot and delectable. I had a good time with my friend and when it was time to pay the bill, it was just £10.80 pp. For a delicious and hearty meal we could barely finish!! The smiling figures of the Malaysian murals and the kind lady bid us farewell when we left, content.

If you are on the lookout for quick, tasty, reasonably priced Malaysian food you can't go wrong with this place! After the refurb the place feels clean and efficient, and a great go to from a pre theatre meal if you're heading to Queens Hall.

Ive been coming here on and off for over 10 years. The food is alright and reasonably priced however it's not as good in taste as nanyang. this is definitely the sort of place you just eat and go. There is virtually no atmosphere and it can be intimidating as its a small place. The food doesn't come out quick though and is reasonably priced.

Had beef laksa and the dish was good. Walked in without reservation beforehand and waited for few minutes. The restaurant has good atmosphere and good smell too! But would suggest change some of the spoons or bring more kinds of spoons. Those big ones are so slippery in hand.

The curry laksa noodle soup here tastes great, the fried rice noodles with chicken and side dishes are generous, and the lady boss can speak Cantonese and is extremely friendly.

Un malasio en Edimburgo para una visita y se sorprendió gratamente de encontrar este lugar. Bastante vacío cuando llegamos, pero pronto se llenó y no hay mesas vacías cuando nos fuimos, así que posiblemente reservar es esencial los fines de semana. Impresionante comida, tuvimos el char quay teow y un popurrí de platos de verduras. Todo sabía muy bien y las porciones eran generosas. La única decepción fue el satay que se asó a la plancha en lugar de cocinarse sobre brasas abiertas. Buen servicio, y la comida llegó rápidamente. Buena relación calidad-precio.

Wanton noodle soup is fantastic

Vine a Kampong Ah Lee cuando los dueños originales cocinaron aquí hace años. Desde entonces tristemente ya no es auténtica comida malaya. Hemos estado aquí desde que cambió de manos y no es lo mismo. Como malayo, sé lo que auténtico es haber comido aquí. Lamentablemente, siento que parte de ella se ha occidentalizado demasiado. Sin embargo, el lugar parece mucho más moderno. Solían servir los fideos de sopa con diferentes tipos de fideos, particularmente los que van bien con el laksa, como Hua feng y Mei Fung. Sin embargo, lamentablemente, ahora solo sirven fideos de huevo para todos estos currys y si te gustan, entonces te sentará bien, pero para mí son solo un fideo más barato de usar y no sabe igual, más pesado y denso. Además el laksa solía ser picante pero no lo era en absoluto. Otra vez probablemente rebajado. Las alitas de sal y pimienta eran decepcionantes. Los tenía la última vez desde el cambio original de propietarios y estaban sabrosos, esta vez les faltaba sabor y el aceite sabía a viejo. El tarik de nuevo estaba bien, pero no increíble. En general, la comida es comestible y lo disfrutarás, pero para aquellos amantes de la comida malaya que buscan ese sabor auténtico, ya no lo conseguirás aquí.

We came here by chance and previous vacations made us want to finally eat Malaysian food again. We weren't disappointed. We enjoyed it so much that we ate there a total of 3 times. Every dish had exactly the taste we've been missing for years. We had roti, satai skewers, spicy chicken and others. Everything was very good. Thanks for that!!!!

My first time in this restaurant. I went with my two family members who both had been here before. Food was ok, I wouldn’t say it was a fabulous meal but did remind me of the Malaysian flavours. Both of my family said it tasted better last time when they came. Possibly the usual chef was off/ no longer there?

The experience dining in here was somewhat underwhelming. The flavours of the food were mild and could benefit from more creativity and seasoning. I believe there’s great potential for improvement, and I hope to see them elevate their menu in the future. With some adjustments, Kampung Ali could become a standout in the area.

Homey Malaysian (and Chinese) cuisine in a cute space with lovely staff. After a previous bad experience at other SEA restaurants in town, I had my fingers crossed that this one would actually be good, and possibly even authentic. Thankfully, this place checked every box. For Scotland, this was excellent Malaysian food. And for good measure: it is run by Malaysian people. That's important for the kitchen. I was with someone who has a nut allergy so we didn't order all the dishes we would normally share like satays, but they accommodated her allergy very well. The rest of us got individual dishes, even with nuts. My other friend ordered the curry chicken on rice (I think) and I ordered the beef nasi lemak, as it's a favourite of mine. It was not the most sophisticated plating and I will never understand coloured rice, but it's simple and gets the job done. All the ingredients were there including the anchovies. So many places forget the fish! While it wasn't the most amazing plate of nasi lemak I've ever had, there was a charming homestyle feeling to it, like I was eating at someone's house instead of a bustling restaurant. Perhaps that was influenced by how kind the servers were. They were so amiable and treated us like close friends immediately. The milk tea and teh tarik were good too. And all the prices are quite reasonable for the quantity and quality you get. When we come back again, we'll definitely be having other dishes like the sea bass and spicy bean, the belacan kang kong, char keow teow, and satay.

A really busy wee restaurant with excellent service and fantastic food. Staff were so friendly and helpful, especially with our 11mo baby, bringing a highchair and chatting to her etc. Food was delicious, packed with flavour and really quick. The beef was exceptionally tender and the chicken dish really different to what we'd had before. Worth booking a table in advance!

Used to love this place, until my most recent visit. The portion of beef in the nasi lemak was small (and fatty) Not up to the previous standards I felt (and I’ve been visiting here since 2010) I hope this was a ‘one off’ and that the good quality returns when I decide to visit again.

SERVES PORK. The menu clearly show pork is served in this restaurant, how is it categorized as Halal? Please do not mislead us Muslims! It’s not right.

Food tasted amazing especially their laksa curry broth (we would like to try their tom yum next time), just wish had a heads-up about the source of the blue rice grains from the menu description for the Nasi Lamek with chicken as eventually after causing us nauseating concern & asking a second server for a clearer explanation, understanding that the blueness was for aesthetic reasons & not something funny or wrong with the rice as they cook it with added butterfly pea flower which is the same thing used to make bubble tea blue. Also would have been good to know that their cold option for their hot or cold drinks like the Malaysian Milk Tea & Malaysian White Coffee is not in fact cold but just their hot version with ice cubes added in... Also good to discover from a friendly customer next to us who explained better than the server the difference between Malaysian & Taiwanese Milk teas in that Malaysian ones are pulled & poured instead of filtered if I remembered correctly! It is compact & busy at 6pm when I got a table after waiting 5 mins thanks to a customer being aware of us waiting & kindly finishing up more quickly, but when my friend had just joined me 10 mins after, the older server was quite abrupt & hurrying us when we hadn't even had a chance to look & choose our order yet, though the restaurant thankfully quietened down a little so we could thankfully not feel in a rush to finish our food & could catch up & chat more leisurely.

This was our fourth time here. Its a great find, great authentic food and great service. The roti is great as is the khar kway chow.

The food was not impressive, and the service was quite disappointing. An elderly staff member rudely rushed me by placing the bill on my table without me asking, which I found extremely discourteous. I was only there for 30 minutes in total. Regardless of the busy Fringe season, customers should never be treated this way. It’s really disappointing when I was just trying to enjoy my meal, it is definitely not acceptable for stuff to rush customer out like that, regardless how busy Fringe is.

Had the Char Kuey Teow and Mee goreng. Probably my third time here over the last year. Presentation is good unfortunately both mee goreng and char keuy teow aren't the best tasting - Portions a little smaller than a similar priced Nanyang nearby.

Delicious and authentic Malaysian food in a warm and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant as a whole has a small and cute set up. I tried their very famous Nasi Goreng - I must say it amused me so much ♥️ and is now one of my favourite go to dishes. I have also tried their Char Sui - topped with barbecue pork 👌🏻, Roti canai - the roti was crispy and well cooked and reminded me of the Malabari porotta, the curry served with it also tasted really good! Also tried the deep fried Wan Ton - a side dish that was soo yumm served almost x6 pieces. Trust me, malaysian cuisine has now secured a place in my top no.5 cuisines! NB : Editing the review as I’ve tried their Chicken curry with rice today, oh dear, it is soo amazing! And yes, had my all time favourite Nasi Goreng but with a twist - requested to make it more spicier and it was beyond words! So much better than the regular Nasi Goreng ! I highly recommend Kampong Ah Lee ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Malaysian food is my all-time favourite, so I'm glad to have this place in my adopted hometown and only wish it was closer to our place. It's always been busy whenever I've gone and we've been happy with everything we've ordered.

This restaurant offers tasty cuisine that will delight the taste buds of chili lovers! The sauces are incredible and add a delicious touch of heat to every dish. Our waitress was very careful to advise us. We feel that she is passionate about what she does, which adds an extra dimension to the experience. Just had lunch today, chicken satay, salt and pepper wings, chicken curry speciality, hot and spicy chicken really enjoyed it,all came hot, so tasty, great friendly, efficient service. Will definitely go back again.

East or West. Kampong Ah Lee is the best. From decent selection of appetising menu, to the cozy fun interior designs, Kampong Ah Lee has become my comfort dining place, warmingly welcomed by the friendly staff. We've tried a couple of their dishes. Rendang Beef, Red Curry Chicken with their Haiwanese Rice, Char Keow Teow stand out. The biggest plus is, their portion size is really really big, especially their Noodle soup actually can feed 2 people lol. Prices are so cheap comparing the portion size and delicacy. Don't miss it!

Food Is tasty but portions not so big for the price. Service can be improved: they are not super nice, the plates arrived After so much time but they try tò make us tò leave as soon as possibile.

The food is amazing! The portion size in the restaurant is good, however when you order takeaway, its way smaller. Love eating here but they're inconsistent with their service. Ordered a wonton soup a few weeks ago and they threw fried wontons in there instead of boiled ones and the owner (im assuming) played it off as if it were normal. Ordered a double portion of wings to takeaway today and they only put one portion. Extremely frustrating. The food is so good but the quality control and consistency is way off. Resteraunt is abit crammed and not wheelchair friendly.

Absolutely amazing! The service was so kind and accomodating. They got my order wrong so they made my correct order again and gave me the wrong order for free! The food is delicious and authentic. Recommend to all!

3.5/5 if I could, hit or miss items. Their Curry Laksa, Curry chicken noodles, egg fried rice, and char kuey teow are great! Their nasi goreng (fried rice..), nasi lemak and mee goreng were.. not so much. Even the good items arent exactly pulling me back here. Also their roti (canai) (in the nibbles section) is 2 frozen parathas with a curry paste + coconut milk side. Its great, just definitely not good value. Will come to try the hainanese chicken rice, and then maybe if my friends force me to, ill come again.

We saw the menu with clear dietary information online, so we decided to visit as we saw some options for us to order (gluten and dairy free). When we started to order - everything that was marked without gluten actually contains gluten. Everytime I asked why the menu says it’s not, the server just kept saying no it has gluten and apologised. I ended up ordering something with the least amount of gluten (from soya sauce), which I am suffering the aftermath now due to it - was starving and had planned to come here for some time. The main thing is that these dietary information should be updated, if a person didn’t clarity and just order based on the menu, it could be very fatal. Taste wise, nothing above and beyond (not worth the gluten consequences).

Probably the best Malaysian food we have ever had. Chicken curry and roti is unrivaled in every way. We came to Edinburgh from the us and this is the best food we’ve had so far! And the owner is so sweet :)

This is a small and one of the most authentic Malaysian places if not the only one in Edinburgh! The glasses provided for water were a bit questionable (had marks all over them) but the food was fantastic! All the food was piping hot and arrived really quick and tasted amazing, the portions are massive. I will definitely be visiting again when in the area but will maybe take my own water

Nasi lemak just mediocre. The important ingredients anchovies were missing. They provided crispy cracker instead, which is rare in the authentic version. The sambal was delicious. The curry sauce was on par. Coconut rice was slightly below average. Authentic malaysia nasi lemak in a restaurant usually give drumstick or chicken wings or chicken breast, but here was different. 2 stars Malaysia local black coffee was below par. 1 star There was no queue for a table. Serving within 10 minutes upon ordering.

Authentic Malaysian cuisine in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The food is delicious, quite a bit more expensive than it used to be - but where isn't - the chicken is halal, and the staff are always friendly & helpful. I absolutely recommend Kampong Ah Lee.
