Nasi lemak just mediocre. The important ingredients anchovies were missing. They provided crispy cracker instead, which is rare in the authentic version. The sambal was delicious. The curry sauce was on par. Coconut rice was slightly below average. Authentic malaysia nasi lemak in a restaurant usually give drumstick or chicken wings or chicken breast, but here was different. 2 stars Malaysia local black coffee was below par. 1 star There was no queue for a table. Serving within 10 minutes upon ordering.

Authentic Malaysian cuisine in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The food is delicious, quite a bit more expensive than it used to be - but where isn't - the chicken is halal, and the staff are always friendly & helpful. I absolutely recommend Kampong Ah Lee.

On 12th January 2024, my wife and I wanted to eat Malaysian cuisines. Many years ago, we spent few months in Malaysia for my work. Today, we felt very nostalgic and wanted to eat Malaysian food. We enjoyed very much. Thank you! On 28th January, my wife and I visited this restaurant for our lunch. We missed Malaysian meals many years. We ordered few dishes which we ate KLCC. All foods were very good. All staffs were very kind. We felt very comfortable restaurant. Looking forward to visiting again soon. Thank you!

With respect, I have had Malaysian food before and the people were absolutely FANTASTIC! If the owner - I believe - is from Malaysia, then I am Rishi Sunak! The food - Egg Fried Rice - was okay but the service was absolutely disgusting! The owner - I believe - was obnoxious and was repulsive! All I asked for was fried rice with beef and she shut me down on the first occasion. After explaining to her that I want the beef separate from the fried rice, she audaciously shut me down again! DISGUSTING WOMAN! ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING! I will never visit this place again and will make sure to read the reviews and try other places that have a better service and attitude!

Being a Malaysian, the Food here was nothing great : 1. The soft shell crab was kinda burnt & tasteless. 2. The roti canai tasted exactly like 'Kawanku' frozen roti canai & the chicken curry was very light, although the taste was ok. 3. Tofu was dry & tasteless 4. Char Kway teow was too 'charred' & hard at some parts of the noodles, dry, tasteless and only a couple of prawns - mostly kway teow & nothing else. The 2 younger servers were very friendly. The elderly lady that I paid the bill with was very rude. When I asked her whether she was from Ipoh, she ignored me and & when I repeated the question, she just glared at me & blurted "NO!" and walked away. I will definitely not come back here & will pass the word around. It's a shame as there was no Malaysian hospitality at all.

Tried the curry laksa, and it was ok. It wasn't authentic laksa, but "curry laksa" isn't really a thing anyway. The laksa tasted more like curry than laksa, the noodles were overcooked (they used yellow noodles rather than the traditional rice noodles), and they added chicken and squid, which aren't that common in laksa. The spicy broth was by far the nicest part of the bowl. The restaurant is run by malaysian staff, although the lady who served the bowl did not seem to be malaysian.

We were really craving Malaysian food at 9PM and found this place open. Luckily, they were still taking orders. We ordered Laksa and chicken curry noodles, which were served in about 10 minutes. The Laksa broth was amazing, soothing to the senses on a cold Edinburgh night. Generous ingredients, slurpy noodles, tofu, chicken etc. Medium spicy. The curry chicken noodles is a drier version, but the curry has a lot of spicy niceness to it, though not overpowering. Chicken was soft and tender. Noodles was well cooked. Cravings satisfied!

Changed from my 5* review as it is now terrible after the change. Phoned to make a booking. Very rudely told to go in after 30 minutes and hung up on us immediately. Arrived, set down at the table only to be told to get lost. A couple behind us saw how they toss a family with 2 young children (3 & 6) out and were so disgusted that they walked out too. Their food are actually made from ready made meals from any of the many Chinese supermarkets in Edinburgh anyway, hardly anything special. Or as multiple real Malaysians reviewed, kanna sai!

Last week dining here, took me straight back seven plus years. The decor has been modified for the better, it’s more stream line and practical and I’m delighted to report that the food is just as outstanding as it always was. This is no fine dining. It’s not contemporary and sleek. You come for the food and the friendly smiles (hidden behind a mask but you know). One thing is 100% guaranteed, you’ll leave with a very full belly and wish you were back inside eating it all over again. Their menu is reduced at the moment due to a lack of staff (many of whom are still in Malaysia) but you honestly wouldn’t really notice. There is plenty of scope across noodles, rice, veg, meat, sides and soups to satiate even the pickiest of eaters. Favourite dishes include Laksa Noodle, Rendang Beef and Malaysian Spice Aubergine. Dishes tend to arrive when they are ready, so there are no real starters but the first dishes to our table where the 5 piece Satay Chicken (£6.80) and the Roti with Curry Sauce (£5.00) Chicken Satay was succulent with a chargrilled flavour. The satay sauce was of a good consistency and so good, you’ll end up dunking everything else in it too. The Roti is a must order item. It’s ever so slightly sweet with gorgeous folds of cracked flatbread. The curry sauce brings a warming heat and happily will soak into this beautiful flatbread when dunked. Rendang Beef and Coconut Rice were items we both wanted, so our server suggested the Beef Nasi Lemak (£10.50). A super sized large portion that also comes with peanuts, crispy fried anchovies, sambal, cucumber and an egg. The rice was sticky and fragrant and the beef delivering on the spice front. The Nasi Lemak for me brings a true sense of Malaysia to the table with tropical aromatic notes of coconut, chillies and spice. Noodles were next and CharSiu Noodle (£8.90) was up. Deeply spiced succulent pork strips lay atop a mound of soft fat noodles and underneath lay blanched pak choi or choy sum. There isn’t too much spice here and little heat but it’s so compliments the pork and noodles, that you’ll be slurping until the last noodle is gone. My delight was so evident when I seen that what use to be my favourite dish was still on the menu and I was delirious when it tasted the same. Freaking yum! This is the Golden spicy Chicken (£10.80). Crispy gnarly nuggets of chicken so soft and tender they melt in your mouth. The crunchy outside allows the sweet stick sauce to clingy lovingly to it and you hit the jackpot when you find a piece pocketed with pools of sticky sauce. Eat it with the slices of chilli to give it a kick, or just eat it all to yourself. You can choose. The food here is incredible. It’s one of those places, that when you leave, you talk about the food all the way home; you text your friends about this incredible food you’ve just eaten and take pics to show family. It really genuinely is that good. The staff are brilliant, keeping your ice cold beers topped up and happy to provide descriptions of the food and make suggestions based on your likes and dislikes, and the volume of heat you’d like for your food. Their slogan is Malaysian Delight and I can confirm that it is so. We are so lucky to have this hidden gem on our doorstep.

As a Malaysian, I'd say the food is average at best. I understand that they have to tone down the spices to carter to the locals. However, that does not excuse the rude treatment that me and my friend experience during our time there. The waiter were rude to us and it feels like they're trying to make us leave early. There wasn't any other customer quieng at the time. What makes me mad is that the waiter serve the other customers (which are mostly locals and some europeans) politely except us.
