Cask and Barrel (Southside) in Edinburgh, City of

I came to "Cask and Barrel" several times during my stay in Edinburgh and will happily return on a future trip. I felt very good, in a relaxed atmosphere. The people who served my drinks were very friendly.

Quiet when we went in around 5pm

Really nice pub but barman so rude, looked genuinely unhappy to be there. Grumpy old man really...

Traditional pup with a large round bar, good selection of beers & lagers, atmosphere was ok for in the afternoon, I think it would busier at night. Tvs showing the football. prices were more than the other pubs we were at in the same street or around the corner.

Always has an interesting selection of drinkable ales on.

I watched the football last night here but I have been here many times. I think the cask and barrel does exactly what you would expect. I have never walked in here and not been given a good welcome and it always has a great atmosphere and you can relax and watch the football.

Beautiful pub, lovely service. Visited as it featured in the tv show Good Omens. We were able to try beers before we purchased and the barmaid recommended some things to do in the city.

Very very traditional pub in Edinburgh - great variety of craft beer - they have live music every day. Today was Celtic style. - local pub, no tourists go there. - live sports on TV too.

Incredibly rude barman on Friday afternoon when we made a honest mistake of bringing our dog in when dogs aren’t allowed.

Great tasting ales loads to choose from..

Fantastic place, they will serve you at late and respect your time to drink it, won't hurry you to drink or kick you from the place. First time I've seen a bar like this in Scotland, lot of beers to choose too. I recommend

Stupendous cask ale, brilliant service from barstaff who clearly know how to look after and pour a full pint of tasty ale. Lovely setting, including the central bar.

This place has a lot of charm, with its cozy, traditional atmosphere and a good selection of ales. There are plenty of screens, so it's a great spot to watch sports, and the prices are reasonable for the area. However, my experience was mixed. On some visits, the staff were friendly and attentive, making it a welcoming place to relax. But there were times when the service fell short—rude behavior and a lack of effort left a sour taste. The beer selection is solid, though I found the options for malt-driven and darker ales lacking. Overall, it's a decent pub with potential, but the service can be hit or miss.

Beautiful pub with a particular horseshoe counter, truly unique furnishing details. Good beers and spirits.

Came in at midday when the place was absolutely dead, was barely in for 10-15 minutes when the barman made me and my partner leave. From the very start he made it obvious he didn’t want us there and made us leave with absolutely no reason, will not be returning.

We went in here for a drink last night and what a great old bar. Staff were very friendly on point and they were very attentive. Very enjoyable!

Absolutely horrific experience when we walked in on a Sunday afternoon and had your older Scottish barman with glasses eyeing us from the moment we stepped in the door. We are a young couple in our twenties who are quiet and respectful and had just sat down when the barman came over and asked for our ID’s so we happily handed them over. He proceeded to grab them from us and within minutes told us to leave with zero explanation. We were thrown out of this pub which only had one other customer. Rest assured we will never return

Situated here on the sunny southside a wee pub that's a jem and a great source of pride. To many a local that oer many a year has been blessed by this place that brings joy and breathes cheer

Moved to Loanhead 3yrs ago and was delighted to find this sister pub of the Broughton Street Cask and Barrel on my bus route. Lovely traditional pub, loads of selection beer wise, always plenty of staff and lots.of screens for sport. It is a bit of a man's pub, but i like that and the mixed age crowd that drinks there do not make women feel unwelcome. Real ale,.comfy pub amd background sports. What's not to like! Not sure they do food, but the crisps have always been good!

Use to be my go to pub but beware of moody bar manger.. 1st night out in a year or so ruined..again beware!!

Great pub on the Southside of the city. Excellent selection of beers and spirits. Decent pub if you fancy watching football on tv. Plenty of screens but still feels quite like a cosy local.

Certainly gone downhill from our last visit. Grumpy barmaid who refused a (70 year old) man a double (35mm) drink? Did she think this would send him over the top? Only two other people in at lunch time? This establishment used to be jumping.

Superb pub and always a good rotation of various beers. Sadly unlike the Cask & Barrel Northside, they are openly allowing vaping in the pub which is a bit out of order. You want to do that, do it outside. Last time I spotted this there was at least 4 guys in a group all vaping inside. Not good enough.

This is a great traditional Edinburgh pub with a central bar. It’s £5 for a pint which is so decent for the area. There are well-placed screens to watch sport and the staff were lovely! My favourite pub from my visit to Edinburgh by far!

Awful service. Not as much as a smile from the staff. Asked for a double gin & tonic and was told they don't serve doubles. Never heard of that in my life. One drink had & won't be back in , Ever.

Absolutely degrading experience. I am a grown woman who was out with my friends for drinks—all in our late twenties/ thirties. I only wanted water and while none of my friends were carded—even though they all got drinks—I was asked to show my ID to the bartender. For water??? I said to the bartender, “but it’s just water.” She said I need to see it; you can’t be here. I told her my age, and she still demanded to see it…well this is a first. I also checked the windows on my way out for any signs (e.g., No under 25s…even though that doesn’t apply to me), there was no such sign. Glad I didn’t give them my money.

Beer and sport. That is what this pub does. Great cask ale. Every game on about 5 TVs. No food. If you like beer and sport, superb. Otherwise, probably not your place.

Nice wee boozer with old fashioned horseshoe bar. It was quiet when went in (Sunday evening), but started to fill up later as there was a folk band playing later. We caught a bit of them, very good and not too loud. Seemed to have a decent choice of beers, but I was on the non alcoholic drinks...

A younger sister to the established bar on Broughton Street. As you'd expect a decent selection of beers on tap. Good place for watching football or other sports as they have numerous screens on all the walls ensuring you'll get a view if a screen irrespective where you are in the pub.

Just a great big pub with loads of seats and great service. What more could you want?

C&B Southside, like its northern sibling, is a fine, spacious place to enjoy decent real ale pints with friends. My only concern is the lack of malt-driven ales. Too many hipster hops-heavy ales. Not a problem in general, but among the 8 real ale taps there wasn't a single dark or even amber ale. Mundane Guinness was the only offering, off on its own tap. It's winter! Give us winter brews.

A drinking bar with sport on tv's! I would term it a classic pub and it was exactly what you would expect from this.

A nice traditional Ale house with lots of memorabilia and old School posters. Feels like it hasn’t changed in years. Beer is good to with plenty of choice of ales.

Always great ales and stouts (or porters) and always well kept.

Extremely rude and unhelpful bartender, we arrived as a party of 7, after six of us had ordered we had our drinks plonked on the bar, our seventh asked if they had any porters or stouts - the reply was a barked NO accompanied by pointing at the Guinness tap. Definitely the first and last time there for us!

The Cask and Barrel which was formally known as the Junction is a pub which caters for the Newington middle classes with a good choice of beers and wines. The barman was friendly and knew what he was doing. I will visit again and may increase their stars.

The staff are superstars!!! They look after you!! The locals are FAB!! (I am biased in that one).. And as always the alcohol is superb!!!

Quiet when I was there, but it was a Tuesday night so to be expected. Very spacious inside. Ale in absolutely perfect condition and friendly service. Good selection too. Lots of tellies, but great if you like watching sport while you sup. Imagine it would be very lively at the weekend.

Es un pub que estaba al lado de nuestro Airbnb y nos llamó la atención desde el primer día. Fuimos un día a tomar unas pintas y el ambiente nos gustó mucho, tanto de las personas que estaban como clientes, como de los camareros. Los fines de semana hay gente viendo el futbol, gente que queda a tomar la primera con los amigos antes de ir a cenar, y gente que simplemente quiere tomar una pinta tranquilamente en solitario o acompañado. Es un bar grande con una buena distribución, que aprovecha todos los rincones para que podamos estar con la pinta apoñada. El bar en general estaba muy limpio, y a 15 minutos de la Royal Mile.

Shocking. Staff an abomination. Probably the worst experience I’ve ever had walking into a bar. Will NEVER set foot in this horror show again. Avoid unless you are completely desperate.

Good restomoded pub. Horseshoe bar with many beers on tap. Great service and reasonable prices. Appreciated that no loud music the two evenings I have dropped in for a pint or two.
