Like other National Trust properties at this time of year, Tyntesfield has been decorated for Christmas. There are some additions, like a Dickensian themed tavern, serving tea and coffee. Thankfully, since they are, to many, the most interesting rooms, the kitchen and snooker room were open today, in December 2024. As is often the case, the parking payment machines were out of action, leading to much confusion as visitora approached them and found out. Three major things the National Trust should fix are: a) Allow members to log their registrations online, for all properties, with no need for faffing with tickets. b) Make membership cards work in Apple, etc. phone wallets. Having to carry physical cards is old-fashioned. c) Make single-entry unisex loos mre generally available. There is one at Tyntesfield, but only down near the kitchen garden. Aside from that it's always a good experience.

This review is specific to the Christmas 2024 Tyntesfield displays and organisation surrounding them. Long, but read if you are considering going. We were lucky to get a free autumn pass and decided to get in the festive spirit by visiting this event. Here's our experience. Parking - On arrival at 10.30am we found the car park heaving and cars queuing for spaces. There were some volunteer parking guides but honestly it was a bit of a free for all. Entry to House - We got through the entry point without too much queuing and headed straight for the house. Where we joined a long, LONG queue. It was an hour till we reached the entrance. During all that time there was nothing to disrupt the cold misery of the restless crowds. The kiddy carousel in front of the house turned briefly and very occasionally, but in silence. People were taking young children to sit down because it was just too long for them to stand. At the entrance the very friendly lady allowing entrance spent a further good 2 or 3 minutes telling each set of visitors information they probably did not need about the decorated rooms and how they shouldn't miss this or that room. This was very helpful and would have been welcome if we had just strolled up to the house but after a cold wait of an hour it created a further delay and we didn't have much patience for it. Displays in the House - The house itself was nicely and ingeniously decorated but not spectacular. I waited for a Wow! moment that never came. The house was mainly unheated, so we remained shivery, the rooms were dark with shutters closed (to emphasise the tree lights?), and there was no music to lighten the atmosphere. It was pretty but sombre. I enjoyed seeing some of the novel decorations but I associate Christmas with joy, light, and good cheer and this was strangely lacking. Courtyard market - As a fan of A Christmas Carol I had been looking forward to the Dickensian market in the courtyard, but once again, this was a strange non-event. There were painted board facades of little shops. An empty "bandstand" may have housed entertainment at some point, but not when we were there. A "snow" machine I had witnessed working on our arrival was now inactive. Scrooge and Marley's offices were simply a small empty area formed of black sheeting. There really was nothing to see. Chapel - This was lovely, flower-decorated and serene, with beautiful stained glass, so worth seeing. NB there are steps up to it. Kitchen Garden - understandably rather short on plants at this time of year. The greenhouses were interesting with inventive decorations and colourful chillis in one. The orangery decorations were frankly ugly and looked like they were made by a primary school. Not worth the walk just to see those. Santas workshop - this was very charming. Cosy and evocative, worth a look. By that point we were so chilled through that we left. Overall, we did not at all get the infusion of Christmas cheer we expected. The National Trust can't help the weather but since they advertised this event and must have expected crowds I feel it could have been much better managed. With regulations over how many people can be let into the house at one time surely it would have made sense to extend the house opening hours to spread the load and reduce the queues? Music and a little more lighting would have really raised the atmosphere in the house. And activity or background noise/music of some sort could have lifted the deadness of the "market". I note that house opening is extended by an hour from 21/12 so who knows, maybe there will be also be some light and music? As it was, we left feeling underwhelmed. We were relieved that we had only paid for parking and would have been very disappointed if we had spent full entry price.

Beautifully decorated for Christmas but would advise going on a weekday if you can - we queued thirty minutes to get in the house. Trail for little ones appreciated (though not easy, for us at least 🤣🙈) and some other interactive activities great too. We love visiting Tyntesfield throughout the seasons.

Extremely disappointed with this years Christmas event at the house, or rather non-event. Apart from the decorated trees and the dining room decor, there was little of the usual festive ambience, no music or actors/volunteers in costume, providing an element of Victorian festive fun, as in previous years. It was all a bit flat. Only a few rooms on ground floor open. Upstairs off limits. The Drawing room which normally looks magnificent was in semi darkness, with the chandelier fading on and off while a tape recording of voices discussing the meaning of winter played in a loop in the background. The kitchens were open (at last) and a lovely lady 'cook' baking, albeit, faux festive treats, which was a fun touch but on the whole not up to usual standard this year. We as members were disappointed and paying visitors might well feel rather ripped off. Sorry NT. Please bring back the Tyntesfield Christmas you once produced 🙏

Although we don't live locally we do pop in a couple of times a year en route and usually try to visit at Christmas. House was beautifully, ornately decorated in a sympathetic way typical of the period. Much attention to detail such as silver cutlery and salvas hanging as decorations in the dining room and trees and playing card mini Christmas trees on the billard table with cues vertically styled as trees. The carousel in the library, the lighting and music made it truly magical. A real life carousel outside, the orangery decorated, the list goes on, easily a full day. The guided walk was interesting, led by two knowledgeable volunteers. However, I was informed at Visitor Reception it was 45 minutes, it was nearer 1 hour 15 minutes. I am a staunch NT support, love my history and always like to absorb the information but it really did go on a bit! Maybe split it? Or at least inform the visitor of the length? I didn't want to break away as I wanted to learn more about the kitchen garden. All in all however a most enjoyable visit and such a lot of hard work in presenting such a wonderful Christmas offering.

£19.50 entry and £3 off peak parking, and no concessions! But lovely gardens, and interesting back story. The free guided tour was worth doing, but ASTONISHINGLY, I found the main house closed for cleaning and Christmas decorating, so only saw the chapel. ON ANY OCCASION WHEN THE HOUSE IS CLOSED ENTRY COST SHOULD BE HALVED OR AT LEAST VISITORS SHOULD BE TOLD THAT WHAT THEY ARE PAYING TO SEE IS COMPLETELY CLOSED AND OFF LIMITS! easy to find though and well signposted from motorway.

Our visit to Tyntesfield coincided with their Halloween event and the Uninvited Guest from the Unremembered Past art installation. We arrived around 10:30 and the car park was almost full. I don’t know if the is normal or because of the children’s event. Our first stop was the house, which had several rooms closed and in others like the library, it was difficult to see some of the paintings because of the limited access. The art installation was in several of the open rooms and the chapel. The “art” consisted of very large, black organic shapes that had an intrusive malevolence about them. They had the air of Dr Who or Star Trek villains. Many of the people walking around didn’t like them and they did intrude in the rooms we saw. The gardens and the kitchen gardens were mercifully free of art and were a very enjoyable walk. The greenhouses were wonderful. Because of the art and the limited access to the house interior, I’m very glad we went in as National Trust members and didn’t pay cash on the day.

Visted today take the dogs and have a coffee, after paying for parking, really disappointed that to get to the cafe you have to pay the £18 entry fee each. Also. If you pay for parking at the machine it says £5, however if you pay on the app you get other options to pay for less, I paid £3.10, really bad for anyone who pays of the machine. The last time I went there it was free parking and you could go to the cafe, all changed since the national trust took over. Warning to anyone who just wants to go for a walk and coffee, don't bother.

We used the National Trust Escape into Autumn free entry pass so can't comment on regular cost of entry but we had a lovely few hours walking around the grounds. Couldn't go in the house with our dog but still enjoyed everything else. The car park was closed so we had to park on the side of the very busy road, along with many other people, and walked in. The walled garden and kitchen garden is very nice and the woodland and fields offer lots of walks for people with dogs. The queues in both cafes were extremely long and poorly managed - only 1 barista so we had to queue up for over half an hour - we will bring our own drinks in the future. The grounds and house are very nice and perhaps it was just unusually busy when we visited, as it was the last weekend to use the free entry pass.

The grounds and house really are quite lovely for a visit. The house itself seems to be based in a Neo-romantic / Gothic style and it succeeds quite well. Quite a few rooms were open for our visit, so all good there. The grounds are huge and there is a garden tour with one of the volunteers, ( I don't believe that you need to book this, just show up and sign up). That said, we were on a strict schedule that day and the tour went on and on and on, to the point of tediousness. If fact we had to leave it after about and an hour and 15 mins, (of a 30 min tour), as we still had to visit the house. Staff - All but one of the staff were brilliant, with one exception and this is why I have given four stars instead of five. To put you in the picture, I was holidaying with my parents as they are getting on now and need me for driving long distances etc. As we arrived, i went into the front garden to take a few photos whilst my parents spoke with one of the volunteers on the veranda, ( a man in his sixties wearing a khaki stetson hat). As I approached them, my mother introduced me to said volunteer who told me that I was too old to be on holiday with my parents and I should holiday alone. Is it National Trust policy to allow it's volunteers to insult members / visitors? If I had got his name, I would have reported him, however these people always hide their name tags under lapels or scarves. Perhaps, some sort of volunteer etiquette course is required National Trust. Luckily the rest of the staff were great and rectified what was a very bad start to our visit!

Lovely place to visit. The house and gardens are truly beautiful. The current special exhibition, The Uninvited Guest from the Unremembered Past, presents the house in a unique way. It’s thought-provoking, encouraging us to reflect on how past traumas can impact our mental health today. We had a fantastic day out at Tyntesfield House. All the staff were incredibly kind, knowledgeable and professional with answering any questions we had. Even the car park attendants were super patient when we were looking for a space in an INCREDIBLY busy car park! The building itself is in remarkable condition and I'm glad it's been preserved to show off. Unfortunately a few rooms we really wanted to see were closed off as an art exhibition was being displayed. (I wasn't a huge fan of the artwork, but to each their own). I do wish they'd made the car park bigger as we had driven all the way down from Manchester and ended up driving round and round looking for a space. I understand they don't want to ruin the estate, but there's so much of it, and it wouldn't hurt to add an overflow car park surely. Nevertheless, a great experience and I'd recommend it to anybody!

A lovely national trust property spoiled by an "art"installation. Beautiful grounds and a lovely house but too many rooms closed and the ones that were open had been, in my personal opinion, vandalised by an"art" installation. We've visited the house many times in the past and decided to go this weekend to see the new art installation. There seems to be a lot of negativity towards it and I accept that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I found it an interesting idea and enjoyed seeing something different in the house. There are also a couple of rooms to see that aren't usually open to the public. My teenagers enjoyed the Stranger Things vibe and the young children I saw were having a great time finding the various parts of the installation. If nothing else, it has got people talking and I'm sure it will have attracted a few more visitors. All in all, another very enjoyable visit to a beautiful place.

We have lived in Bristol for many years but never managed to visit this place. It's a fantastic national trust property on the doorstep. We looked at this property as it looks amazing online. When we arrived we were blown away! House is beautiful, ground is well maintained, various walks you can go for, small chapel and orangery. It has got a lot to offer if you like walking. Honestly was so impressed with the house and the volunteers that worked within. If you are not a National trust member there is an entrance fee £18 plus car park £5 which is quite expensive but all the national trust are quite pricey nowadays. We spent nearly half of day walking around and exploring the house. However I do think there are few points which needs to be considered and puts this place in a bit of negative side: 1. Toilets are untidy, smelly and congested. Once you pay around £20 you do expect a good toilet facilities but it's quite poorly managed. 2. Baby changing facility are not separate. It's weird going in Mens or Women's to change baby nappy. Baby changing facility is very cramped. 3. They got 2 places to eat but the main restaurant is near the entrance which is weird. You go walk around the place and then you get tired and hungry but you have to come all the way back to the entrance to have a proper food. Overall, it's a good place but food and toilet facilities are bad.

The only one downside was some of the staff in the house... even though we greeted them with a hello and a smile, we received nothing back. A beautiful place to visit on a warm summers day. This is a vast estate, with the grounds mainly parkland, but a few colourfully planted areas appear as you amble along. It is clear that much care is taken over the maintenance of the grounds, with all lawn and shrubbery looking manicured and pristine. There are plenty of areas to sit along your walk, so as to admire the loveliness of the surroundings. There are also a couple of cafe's & areas of play for the little ones. The house is definitely worth a visit, with everything kept insitu since the death of the last owner, in the early 2000's. Not all rooms can be entered, but everything can be seen. If you're lucky (as we were) a staff member will be playing the piano in the entrance hall, and the sound will follow you as you experience the wonders that await. Enjoy.

Nice place, the grounds are extensive but like most NT properties they're so dark inside it's hard to actually take anything in. Obviously for painting conservation, but still be nice if they could work out a way to light them a bit. The chapel is nice though, and went on a good guided tree walk which was interesting. Cafes ok but pretty manic generally. Enjoyable day out either way.

Highly recommend using the tour guides available. They are Exceedingly knowledgeable and Make the tour of the ground a real treat. Without them the day would’ve been a very enjoyable day, but we would’ve just drifted along. Superb property Well maintained and delightful food. The staff couldn’t be more helpful If they tried. There is a mobility bus for those with walking issues well worth using. There are eateries all over the place, just an all-round fantastic day out.

Tyntesfield House is well worth a visit. There's quite a long walk from the car park to the house, as the grounds are extensive, but there is a mobility shuttle which runs regularly. The house is stunning! The architecture is beautiful and the rooms and collection have been well preserved. The jewellery safe is beautiful! Whilst we were there, there was a gentleman playing the piano in the entrance hall and it created such a lovely atmosphere. My 6 month old son was transfixed. The volunteers were very knowledgeable and friendly. The grounds are very well maintained and in keeping with the house. The payment machine in the car park doesn't accept card payments, it only accepts National Trust Membership cards or cash. If you want to pay by card, you will need to download the Pay by Phone app.

A treasure trove indeed but with fantastic gardens. The tour of the house was very informative and the story of the family, especially it's last occupant was very eerie & moving. well worth a visit.

Staff was friendly and explained everything. The place is huge. You can easily get lost. Came too early to see the bigger veg and rose gardens though. Pets allowed. It's nice.

Throughly recommend visiting this stunning house and gardens, we joined the garden tour which gave us so much information about the gardens, and so many interesting facts especially about the trees. The house is very impressive. I've never been in one with such unusual and beautiful fireplaces, we had lunch in the kitchen garden cafe. A delicious pasty, then later we enjoyed a large icecream, well worth visiting..

Second visit within a year. This house is beautiful, absolutely stunning. Last time we visited the first floor was closed, so very pleased to be able to view it today. The guides were lovely and knowledgeable, especially the lady in the boudoir. I absolutely adored the kitchen garden. So many NT properties seem to be neglecting these lately. But they are one of my favourite things to see, especially when they are well done, like here. We’d hoped to get a sandwich on our way out, but the restaurant at the top was a little lacking in the basics.

As members we try to visit as many properties as possible to make the most of our membership. Tyntesfield offers a good day out with options of house and gardens and parklands to wander around in. We always take a picnic due to the cost of eating at these places and there are lots of benches to stop sit and relax. A little disappointing that no maps were available to help us navigate our way around. We try not to use our phones at the weekends so the offer of scanning a QR code as a way of finding our way around was not much use. Although we were assured by the man at reception that the signage and information boards at junctions would ensure we didn't get lost and made the most of our visit. A good day out.

Not the easiest of National Trust houses to get to lots of narrow country lanes, however ideallic scenery to see along the way. The car park is quite far from the house so be prepared to walk, however there is a shuttle service that will take you right up to the house. The house has been very well preserved and has so many of its original pieces displayed. As you walk through each room there are some guides to read about the history. When you have reached the end of the house it leads into a very beautiful chapel. A very quiet place to have some reflection time. Going outside you can wander through the gardens which again is quite a steep walk at times but worth a visit. There is a shop and a cafe which serves some lunch items, however not the cheapest of places to eat. Overall a great place to visit.

Beautiful Tyntesfield. An original Georgian house known as Tyntes Place was remodelled into the Gothic Revival masterpiece of Tyntesfield, by the designer John Norton, in 1863. Tyntesfield was built for the merchant William Gibbs who made his fortune importing guano from South America. The house contains over 72,000 objects and treasures accumulated by William Gibbs and his family!

Beautiful house, well worth the visit. The cafe is a small, with only 3 tables inside. The selection of food was limited. I would say just to skip it on a wet day, and take a picnic on the dry days.

Visited the Railway Inn after the Thatchers tour. The restaurant was stunning inside. The drinks were excellent quality and the mains were good. We were, however, let down by the long wait for food and slow service (it would've been nice to have just one person serving us instead of 4/5). The desserts were also a let down and not worth the money paid (£8 for 4 not great petite fours was overpriced). That said, they had people waiting for tables so it will never be a problem. Think we would return for drinks as it would be nice to sit in the garden in the summer with a nice refreshing glass of cider.
