Never ever go there again. We went there for Sunday lunch When we sat on the table. They taken out our orders..she explained they will call us when plates ready..that point I do understand meat is frozen. Because they claimed its a Sunday carvery but not carving front of you. Very strange place. Horrible meats, Horrible stuff. nobody asked how was our food. They should shut this junk place..grrr wasted my time.

When I arrived my family were already sat at the table. It was a warm day so I picked up a glass from the table to have water. It was so dusty it looked opaque, my cutely was all dirty. My starter came (mushroom) the pasty was soggy and under cooked. The children had pizza ( limited basic child’s menu) it was the quality of a basic unbranded super market value pizza. Cheese just melted no colour. I definitely think it needs a new hygiene assessment, When I spoke to the staff (all young, no senior member) I was told to ring or email. I’ve done both since and to date no reply. It could be such a wonderful place. It just looked said and run down.

Food was a massive let down. All courses excluding dessert were very oily / greasy and gave us a queasy feeling for both myself and partner. The only positive of the restaurant was the service provided. The only reason the score isn’t lower is due to a good breakfast and good service from Tricia.

The menu is ok, you can kind of cater for all tastes. My partner made a good choice with curry of the day. The portion size was good and the pieces of chicken were huge and he said tasty. Only flaw was accompaniments - rice, naan AND chips!!! 3 carbs! You don’t need chips (or they could have been a choice instead of rice) so what about a vegetable side to go with it? My choice was poor - half a rack of ribs (smaller than my hand!) I’m not a big eater but even I was surprised at how small they were. Came with chips, coleslaw and garlic bread. Again you didn’t need the bread with chips and coleslaw was 2 mouthfuls so sides could have been better (bigger coleslaw, beans, corn on the cob etc) Desserts were good. Staff are lovely. I just think the menu needs a tweak.

Booked in for the mrs and my anniversary, very polite and helpful lady on the phone for the booking, got to the restaurant and were shown to our lovely table, very nicely laid out, soft pleasant music playing, had a choice of two menus, a set two or three course meal and the a la cart menu. I chose from the a la cart and missus chose the two course set menu, both actually worked out almost the same price. The food was amazing as I hope the photos will show, the starters were well presented and full of flavour as were the two main courses, we will definately be booking again quite soon.

Have been here three or four times now and will go again in full confidence in ingredients, cooking, service and ambience. The fixed price lunch menu is very good for variety (including vegetarian options) and for value at £14.95 for two courses. I've enjoyed hake, pork fillet and an excellent fish pie as main courses, and various starters. The fish pie is fish-full, not buried in potato. The setting is lovely, especially if the weather is good enough to eat on the terrace. Service is very good - we were well pleased, then delighted to find 15% deducted because we'd had a long wait. We hadn't noticed, as the place was so pleasant to be in. Some good local beers in bottle, though not on draught

We went there as there was a big sign advertising all day lunches for non -residents. We walked there after our Master Class at distillery and as we hadn't booked we were turned away even though there were empty tables. Went to hotel reception to ask if we could have a drink and packet of crisps or something at hotel bar rather than restaurant but as non resident were turned away. When I said we hadn't a car we had walked some three miles there, where else to suggest they suggested the New Inn which was some five miles away.... Thankfully in the lay bay outside the place there was a burger van so we were able to get something to eat before the long walk back to our B&B. That was worth five stars they were very helpful!!

Went here recently for Sunday lunch and was really pleasantly surprised by the changes since my previous visit. The restaurant was warm and inviting, as were the staff. The lunch was a carvery, but unlike some carveries it wasn't a free-for-all. Each table was called up individually, so no unnecessary queuing. The chef carving the selection of meats was friendly and called a waitress to help me as I have to use a walking stick. The food was all hot and looked appetising at the servery. Plenty of fresh gravy - no horrible lumps or skin on top!! A good selection of desserts which appeared to be freshly prepared and not just brought out of the freezer! Returned a couple of weeks later with family members and pleased to see the high standards still being maintained.

Booked and went to have a family sunday lunch on 22nd March. There were none of us. The restaurant was heavily booked so it is possible to forgive the tardy service. We were asked beforehand that our table would be needed from 2:30pm for a large party that was coming in but in the event, the staff subtly organised another table so we were not inconvenienced in the least. The food was a carvery but never the less of very good quality and the vegetables were refreshed often keeping them fresh and in very good condition. The overall price which did not include any wine was good at less than £20 per head for a very satisfying two course meal. I did not fancy any of the deserts so asked for cheese (that was not on the menu) but the staff and chef prepared a good cheeseboard which was well received. I will be going back and I'd recommend it too.

Breakfast was a real treat, lots of choice constantly topped up with fresh produce, and good staff. We booked our stay some six weeks in advance as we were going to Penderyn Distillery next day. We arrived in good time and were given keys to Room 1.It must be the tiniest double room we have ever seen, with half a window overlooking some outbuildings and a light well. After a complaint we were given a room in the newish extension which was huge, with an extra bed. It had pleasant views and a good bathroom. On our departure I queried whether Room 1 was typical of all double rooms. After some difficulty in defending hotel policy I gather it is a double room usually given to single travellers or people arriving late when they are otherwise fully booked!WE dis enjoy our stay but are bemused by the lack of attention to guests who book in advance, pay in advance and do not use discount websites.Go to Ty Newydd by all means, but avoid Room 1.

Stayed with work in November, was quite a pleasant stay, food in the restaurant was really good, the cod in chorizo was excellent. My Room was a little bit dated but was large and therefore was slightly cold through the night. The hotel itself was again slightly dated but was friendly enough. My only issue during my visit was when I went down to breakfast the lady serving was rude which was something I spoke with the manager at the time about, I believe she had been told she would be working on her own as another member of staff had called in sick, I only mention it on here in case a pattern forms, everyone can have a bad day and I wouldn't let that put you off. Apart from that I would recommend this place no problems.

The restaurant in the TY Newydd (Caradog's) has recently been remodelled so wanted to check out their Sunday lunch.Great parking as always and the first 'new' thing is that the restaurant entrance is now to the left of the main hotel restaurant.Decor is bright and cheerful and fairly traditional. We were shown to our table but no menus or explanation of service. When asked, staff were helpful.Choice of a carvery or set menu. Meal was the usual carvery fare, plus we had a set menu. All very 'expected' but very tasty & we thoroughly enjoyed. Reasonable cost. Staff were a little 'green' & had to be prompted but very pleasant & tried to be helpful. A bit more training required.Lavatories were clean & new but the decor spoiled by cheap cubicles & badly fitting doors. I had to lift the door to lock it. Poor flushing too. Bit of a shame. We would definitely go back for a family Sunday lunch. Was very pleased that you can book up until 3pmNice to see this open in the area

We called in on our journey, for coffee and Welsh cakes. On previous occasions both were satisfactory. This time the large cappuccino was in a huge, thick cup. It was absolutely scalding and totally tasteless. Even after waiting for several minutes it was too hot to drink The Welsh cakes were undercooked, luke-warm to touch and ice-cold in the middle! We left both and will not be returning The major refurbishment makes quite a dramatic difference- visually, but we are so glad that we didn't book for a lunch or dinner .

Booked lunch for my elderly mum and myself. Mum lives locally so we knew the hotel but hadn't been there for several years so when we saw the travelzoo offer decided to give it a try. The decor was contemporary but inviting and we were made most welcome.Mum had the carrot, chilli and lime soup to start which was absolutely delicious with yummy home made bread (I had a little try and it was rich and flavoursome). I had the leek and welsh cheese croquettes with beetroot relish which were also very tasty. Unfortunately it was the main course that let it down. We both ordered duck breast served with blackberry coulis, pak choi and potatoes. We also ordered a side order of onion rings as we both love onions. Sadly the duck was very tough. What meat we could cut seemed to have a good flavour. It was also quite rare which didn't bother me but mum would normally have it a little less bloody. The pak choi and coulis were fine but the potatoes were really disappointing as they had no flavour at all and just sat on the plate looking a bit sorry for themselves - I had about 3 pieces of boiled potatoes that didn't add anything to the plate. Unfortunately the onion rings didn't arrive at all.Mum had raspberry bakewell tart and Icecream for dessert which was fine and I ordered the blueberry parfait but my portion, though pleasant, was on the delicate side and I ended up finishing mums tart as well as I was still hungry! We had a pot of tea and a coffee in the pleasant lounge but one of the chocolate mints was bloomed so we didn't eat it. All in all a pleasant enough lunch in lovely surroundings but just a bit disappointing. Maybe we just chose the wrong dish - the fish looked nice :)

Called in without a booking on a busy Saturday lunchtime. Very friendly waitress showed us to what she said was the last table for two. Menu was quite varied, fish, meat or vegetarian options in both starters and main courses. We both had the soup, fresh pea, delicious, no supermarket ready made there! Followed by, for me, the belly pork and for Hubby, the swordfish. Both courses were lovely, but then we had rather a long wait for our desserts, creme brûlée. We were almost on the point of leaving when the waitress noticed we had not had them and rushed off to get them. Must admit they were worth waiting for though! The new restaurant decor is really smart. We saw someone being served a cake stand of afternoon tea, sandwiches and delicacies which looked gorgeous so we will return.

The Ty Newydd has had a refurbishment since the last time I was there. There is now a nice new restaurant and bar area. The area is a lot more welcoming, and has a more relaxed feeling. Welsh afternoon tea is £17 for two and includes finger sandwiches of salmon and cream cheese, cucumber, egg and mayonnaise served with tea or coffee and scones, Welsh cakes, bara birth, cream and jam.Cream teas in other venues I have been to came served on a 3 tier cake stand with sandwiches on the bottom layer, scones on the middle layer and fancy pastries on the top layer with the usual fine china cups, saucers and tea pot.Our tea was served in the newly refurbished 'Caradog' restaurant and is a lovely venue. As we were a large number the sandwiches were served on separate platters but unfortunately there wasn't enough to provide each of us with the 3 fingers sandwiches selection. After a request and a refusal to pay extra for more, we were then given extra finger sandwiches which were very nice. The warm scones, Welsh cakes and bara birth were served on 3 tier cake stands decorated with fresh strawberries ( nice touch) together with large bowls of cream and jam. Tea and coffee was served by the waitress with refills later. After our tea we then went to the hotel loung with dtinks from the bar to relax snd have a chat.Overall it was a very nice tea and I would recommend it and we all enjoyed our visit.

Visited this hotel for lunch after visiting a local Distillery. The table was booked in advance and the room was spacious. The menu included a two course option for what I thought was a reasonable price. However, the four in our party could not sympathise with the chefs decisions - there were not two course that any of us would have ordered. We ended up having sandwiches. The chicken ones were excellent but the beef was specifically ordered to be without horseradish sauce - the first half was without the sauce but it was all on the second - ucha fy! Chips accompanied the sandwiches but when asked for vinegar, a dish of sachets was placed on the table - it had brown sauce, red sauce and many others but no vinegar. The place was not busy - come on staff, pull your fingers out. Some building work was being carried out but this happens and I do not complain about this.

The hotel is very old & charming on the outside and appeared the same as we entered the reception & in the small bar. We were surprised when we walked into the large restaurant as it had been completely refurbished to a high standard. It was comfortable & modern and not at all what I expected, it had recently been done & was all lovely and new. The menu was lovely, the specials were read out to us also. Staff were very friendly when we arrived and showed us to a room with a fire while we waited for our table. The fire was lovely but the room had an odd layout - it felt like we were waiting for a bus.Our starters were lovely and hot (soup and Cawl) and were served with a basket of rolls. My main course of haddock risotto was dry and undercooked and the tiny amount of haddock contained quite a few bones. My partner enjoyed his main of bacon steak but it was fairly simple. The desserts were well presented, my partner's creme brulle was really nice and my chocolate gateau was nice enough but I had a feeling it had come out of a box. The restaurant was practically empty while we were there with a few lone guests popping in for a quick meal. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, though she didn't explain where we needed to pay so my partner had to go to reception to ask. All in all, the experience wasn't great, they seem to do simple stuff well but are trying too hard to be a bit more "posh" but the standard isn't good enough.

No ambience, felt more like a canteen ( plastic pre printed menus), such a shame, the house could be stunning. We chose the 2 course carvery £11.95 it was ok, good choice of veg choice of beef, turkey or salmon fillet.Mature staff were excellent, younger ones seemed nervous and unsure.Pudding presentation was lovely!I would struggle to recommend this place, it was average.

The staff were unfriendly, mainly the owners. The room was out dated and we were situated next to the kitchen vents so the room smelled of smoke and burning the entire time. When we got home our clothes and hair still smelled of this food/smoke type smell. The staff made everything they did seem like a chore. I will never stay here again. Overpriced, outdated, unfriendly and smelled.

this good hotel is on the edge of both the Brecon Breacons National park and the valleys of south wales - so is a great place to stay to explore.

I booked online through the "groupon" website scheme. I then contacted hotel direct, to follow up as my wife is disabled. My 1st conversation with reception was professional and precise, but with a warm and genuine approach.Even advised that it was a busy party evening, with late music and bar.On arrival we met the voice on the phone who was equally charming, helpful and efficent,This attitude was equalled by all the staff, throughout our stay. All my requests regarding "disabled" assistance were more than met, room was clean, well presented, and warm!Food was wholesome, hot and service very efficent.I shoud mention i am a hotelier myself, with 35+ years experience so know my subject well.Would return here without hesitation

After passing a derelict house in the grounds of the hotel we entered a shabby dirty entrance and went through a front door desperately in need of a coat of paint. No welcome greeting was offered from the reception staff and then we were taken to the tired ,dated and miserable looking dining room. No wonder that only another three tables were occupied!.Old, worn cutlery ( only knife and fork) were set upon a bare wooden table.....no cloth. The table centre piece was a used night light, just the metal and wick , no wax. I wondered how long that had been there! As we were only two people the third cover should have been removed but this was not so.The napkins were paper and the pepper pot was empty. My husband said his soup was O.K. but the prawns I had to start were watery and tastless. In fairness the main course plates were hot and the beef was tender.. Also there was a variety of roasted vegetables even if they were a little burnt around the edges. Afterwards we took tea in the weary looking lounge. I asked for the papers and was given the previous days crumpled "Mail". Twice a person, possibly the manager passed me and although I smiled at him he gave me a stoney look back.NOT WELCOMING,SHABBY AND DATED. As you imagine we will not be returning to or recommending this hotel.

Disinterested staff, lack of table linen. No attention to detail like seeing cruets were filled. Only 3 tables occupied at Sunday lunch which seems to suggest that this place is not popular. On the plus side the meal was wholesome and plentiful. The soup was good and the main course was plentiful and acceptable. Management needs a "kick in the backside" to raise the standard of what could be very good country house. It needs someone with real foresight to clean up the very untidy entrance hall and unwelcoming staff at reception. Maybe the "Hotel Inspector" should be employed to give advice to thi establishment! It is quite a disgrace to the Brecon Beacons National Park and will not compare to many lesser establishments in the Vale of Glamorgan.

This popped up so I posted a review about my feelings on the place which are valid but out of date. I used to really like your place so hope it is open again soon and back to how it was at the start.

Excellent food and attentive service. We will be back - especially as the bar area is dog friendly

I used to love this restaurant years ago, so persuaded my husband whilst visiting Pontypridd after living away for many years to have lunch here. An absolute disaster!! The Manager looked stressed and didn’t know where to sit us (or the couple in front of us) and eventually we were shown to the area upstairs. A number of people arrived after us, we chose to sit at one of the tables laid with a nice white tablecloth. Eventually the waitress arrived -but moved us to a bare table explaining that the table we were at was for “afternoon tea” only! We were finally asked for our order after other people had given theirs. The couple in front of us having almost the same non-existent service-then walked out. We gave our order for our first and main course together with a request for wine to accompany it. After half an hour the waitress having served other tables then finally brought our two glasses of water …and gave them to the next table! We asked if we could at least have our previously ordered glasses of wine whilst waiting…. Still Nothing arrived! We then reluctantly decided to follow our fellow diners example and leave which is what we did. Such a disappointment! We will never go there again!
