We were in Birmingham for the England cricket match and had booked this place based on TA reviews and the Michelin guide . We love tasting menus and good quality food so expected to have a lovely experience, sadly the food was simply not good enough , in fact I would go as far as saying awful . Out of the 7 dishes presented 3 were inedible, the beef (which is carpaccio) was tasteless and of very poor quality , the octopus and duck were both so tough and tasteless that we simply could not eat them , in fact the duck we could not cut . If you are used to eating in top end places then you will be disappointed here .

Visited on a Wednesday evening and the restaurant was surprisingly quiet but we got a warm welcome. We choose the longer tasting menu which was very good value and we were not disappointed. A lovely range of courses demonstrating the chefs technical ability. We enjoyed everything and couldn't recommend this restaurant more highly.

Went as a group of 5 on a Wednesday evening. First impressions were excellent - the restaurant is tucked away in a quite alley in the jewellery quarter; the staff were friendly and attentive and the drinks were lovely. We had the 7 course taster menu which was actually different to the menu advertised on their website. Unfortunately a number of the dishes didn't work for me. The octopus was so tough it was almost unpalatable. Overall we were really disappointed as we had heard really great reviews about the restaurant.

We’ve visited Two Cats Kitchen a few times and have always been very impressed at the innovative modern ‘New Baltic’ cooking. This time our experience was not so good.We were given sourdough bread and delicious smoked butter, the bread was almost cooked through and had a very tough crust. There was a seven course tasting menu on offer and it started well with a pork mousse kind of thing and the beetroot dish that followed it was splendid. Around this point we realised that the wait between courses was really long for us and much shorter for the 2 couple on adjacent tables: it seemed to us that the kitchen was trying to synchronise the tables, presumably to make their life easier. This resulted in a 25 minute wait for one course which is out of order when courses are so tiny that they take about 2 minutes to eat (we noted that this was happening on the other side of the restaurant too.) The turbot dish was OK (though the skin was very salty, but the accompanying sauce was split, which is inexcusable. The lamb that followed was again OK, but mine was the end of the piece so was partially overcooked.I didn’t like the pre-dessert that was elderflower based: my partner thought it was lovely though.Dessert was a disappointment, strawberries, granite and a caramel ice-cream which had ice crystals in it.Overall, though the service was pleasant, we felt that the kitchen hadn’t lived up to its part of the deal.(As an aside, there were 2 young couples who spent mst of their meals groping each other or on the phone. This did not enhance the experience.)

Service great, wine amazing. We had the 7 course taster menu, we loved the lamb and the pork mousse but the other 5 courses just didn't really blow us away. This is completely down to preference but I would suggest checking out the menu before hand. The elderflower dish and the beetroot dish were missing something.

We came here for a birthday as a special treat. We quite liked the unusual approach to the restaurant going down a passage way and the restaurant itself had a nice design. The staff were enthusiastic and explained each dish and wine which made us feel special - I liked the idea of the shot of Russian vodka! However a couple of the courses were a little unpleasant - there was a leek course which tasted really sour and was too punchy and couldn't taste anything else and the pudding was supposed to be apple flavoured but it lacked in apple. They really tried their best in presentation and tried to give us a good experience but perhaps the cuisine isn't our type of food - this felt very Russian themed and we're more in to French, British, italian and Spanish type of cuisines.

Having booked a table months ago the evening finally arrived to find out if the wait had been worth it. It was!! The restaurant is relaxed and quite informal in layout but still has a sophisticated feel. From the moment we arrived to the moment we were leaving our two waitresses were faultless in attending to us & enquiring how we were finding each course. We chose the 7 course tasting menu as it had eel & octopus dishes which were both eagerly, but also nervously anticipated. I have always worried that eel would be tough, chewy & not very nice. This was delicious. Delicate with a slightly mackerel like flavour. However, partnered together with the potato crisps was a brilliant idea. The flavours went perfectly together. Next was the tomato & raspberry dish in a delicate & light broth with lots of subtle flavour, delicious. The beetroot with caramelised curd & shavings of dried lamb hearts was deliciously rich in flavour, with sweetness from the curd ensuring it wasn't too heavy. Next was my next test, octopus. Wow, the meat was soft but meaty in flavour & perfectly chargrilled on the outside to give a slight crispiness on the palate. I can now see why it is such a delicasy & eaten regularly in Mediterranean countries. Delicious. Next was the main of lamb partnered with bulgar wheat & pine nuts wrapped in a vine leaf. The lamb was perfectly seasoned, melted in the mouth & the skin on the outside was crisped to perfection adding to the heavenly taste. Myself & my partner both agreed this was probably the best lamb dish we have had anywhere. The first of the 2 desserts was simply called Elderflower & consisted of a number of different components all married with elderflower. Every part had its own unique texture & flavour which was heaven on the tongue. Easily one of the most intriguing & taste tantalising desserts I have experienced. I wanted another plate of it, it was that good. Final dish was strawberries with a caramel ice cream. I was a little underwhelmed with this as I felt there was too much syrup with the strawberries which overpowered the small helping of caramel ice cream. The strawberries themselves however were perfectly ripe & sweet. The chef should be applauded for putting together such a collection of courses where each subsequent plate is a perfect follow up to the previous course. All 7 courses were met with delight from both of us. Can't rate the experience highly enough & can't wait to return

We went here to catch up with friends so wanted a relaxed informal venue but with great food. Two cats kitchen did not disappoint on either count. I found it very refreshing to be served just high quality food in a friendly informal atmosphere. The flavours were amazing and varied and each of the 7 courses impressed with their innovation and well balanced flavours. It is not possible to pick a favourite. The service was discrete and helpful while the prices were very reasonable both for food and wine. I look forward to the opportunity to return.

We first visited in October last year and had a really great time. The food was beautiful, and the service was really warm. This type of innovation seems quite rare, and it is great to be able to have the opportunity to dry dishes inspired by a cuisine that is not so common. We returned again in April for lunch, and although the food was stellar, we found the service to be cold and perfunctory. All in all though this is a real gem.

This tiny place (just 12 tables) packs a huge punch with fabulous food better than any Michelin starred restaurants we've eaten in and without the pretentiousness and price tag to match. I don't normally like tasting menus as I prefer to have some choice but they seem to have found a winning formula with the most creative and delicious dishes. I loved the simplicity of many of the 7 courses with often just a handful of ingredients. My favourites were ribbons of celeriac in creamy parmesan buttermilk and octopus on sweet potato mash with olive puree - the most tender octopus I've ever had.Service was excellent and everyone involved clearly takes a loving interest in the food; the ambience was just right and it's worth mentioning that my wfie's gluten-free requirement was no issue at all - none of the dishes needed modifiction but, having given advance notice, unusually delicious gluten-free bread was provided. A suggested drinks package is available but we chose from the small reasonably priced wine list and whilst this is not a cheap everyday place to eat, we felt we'd had fantastic value and can't wait to return to try any new menu. Long may Two Cats enjoy its deserved success (currently 4+ weeks advance booking is recommended for a weekend).

A very short review . I have little idea why Two Cats does not rate a great deal higher in the rankings . Maybe it's because they are honest in their ratings as opposed to getting a bunch of mates to rank them ...who knows .Fact of the matter is . In my opinion . Two Cats rates far higher than Wilderness by a long stretch .I get a feeling they don't really care about other up and coming competition but only encourage others to raise the high bar . There is dignity here .Sure , a little 'tweaking' is required but that's evolution right? If you are not changing , you are not moving forwards .Be prepared to be introduced to the unknown and don't knock it just because it doesn't match your Paisley taste buds and poker dot eyes . Personally , I expect to be challenged - to tighten and loosen and cross boundaries . If this doesn't excite you ..... then simply don't come

I spent an interesting evening here with friends this weekend. The staff, whilst not unfriendly sadly didn't quite get it right for us this evening. I'll start with the positive and there were a good number. The portion sizes for a seven course menu were spot on. We left adequately full bit not overly so. The finer rhubarb and sorrel was a highlight. Genuinely have no idea how they created some of the textures. Also enjoyed he celeriac. But that, for me is where it ends. At least two of the dishes were overpoweringly garlicky. The pork in particular. The watermelon first course, whilst interesting did not cut it for any of us. A bit odd in the cold onion broth with dried olives. Served straight after lovely sourdough bread, these just did not go together. We asked for a recommendation of dry wine for which Pinot Grigio was the best that could be suggestedThis could be forgiven but for two incidents. The first was hair found in one of the courses, for which a small apology was offered. Later one of the waitresses dropped two glassware items which smashed in spectacular fashion right behind a customer. This in itself is not a big deal, these things happen, however a piece of glass had flown right up towards my friend's face, thankfully missed. It was brushed off with a slight apology. At the end of the meal one glass of wine (the cheapest small glass)was knocked off the bill "because of the hair and the glass" which in our eyes was inadequate a gesture. It is difficult to say what the issue is, But we just felt that the level of service and indeed the standard of food was not quite what we had expected nor did it match some of the reviews we had read. I would give it another try but will perhaps leave it a while

Four of us had the 7-course taster menu with accompanying wines. One member of our party doesn't drink red wine so the sommelier advised a sloe gin instead which worked beautifully. The food was unlike anything I've tasted before, with unexpected flavours and textures in every course. Perfectly cooked & beautifully presented, each course was matched with wine and the staff were very knowledgable about the flavours and origins and why each wine was chosen. We were surprised to find that we had been there for 3 hours and all agreed that despite having had 7 courses we hadn't felt overfaced. Would very much recommend a visit.

We've now been for lunch three times and will get there for dinner asap. We came twice with a nine year old and he ate everything and loved it, although he does eat almost anything! We tried it when our other favourite (The Wilderness) was booked up and we can absolutely compare this...lots of quirkily cooked veg, foraged bits and each plateful fun and/ or awe inspiring. The setting is cosy but not claustrophobic and we have enjoyed the really friendly services. Great (and interesting) wines at good prices and the homemade sourdough bread and smoked butter is fab! We wanted a nice restaurant for a 21st Birthday. We chose the Two Cats as the 7 course taster menu looked interesting, with some quirky dishes. On arrival my wife was given a rose, as it was Valentines day, and one for the birthday Girl. We did have to wait a moment for the table which was a bit odd as there was nobody in the restaurant but once seated we were served well. I tried the stout ale but would not recommend it as it overpowered some of the dishes. We had white wine for the rest of the evening which complimented the dishes well. The courses were small, but after 7 it was enough. The dishes were very well flavoured and presented very nicely. Each one was explained upon serving. The dishes were plated out front so you could see what was coming up next. The drinks were not prohibitive in price and the service was good. I would happily go again.

This is the second visit we have made to two cats, on our first visit we would have rated 5* with excellent food and service, however on our return we have been left very disappointed and do not plan to return. The disappointment started on arrival with no formal welcome or introduction. The menu was good but the service was sub standard, the waitresses seemed to be running a competition of who could be the least endearing in the evening. They seemed reluctant to engage with us on any level and we found our selves requesting things that should have been offered. The drinks flight was an example of this (which we had been offered on our previous visit). Each course was presented with the accompanying drink in such disregard and lack of explanation we were left confused and often with no idea what we were having. The staff do not speak clearly or engage in any sort of personal interaction which is very disappointing and leaves the restaurant rather soulless. This is also combined with ill fitting Jonny Cash music in the background which does not help the poor ambiance. After the meal was finished we sat waiting 15 minutes for a coffee to be offered, which never came. No taxi or bill was offered, in fact we were just ignored. A poor end to an expensive evening where the service needs significant improvement.

My wife and I went to Two Cats Kitchen a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday evening, for a rare date (we have a 15-month-old daughter). The whole evening was lovely - the restaurant is nicely appointed and cosy without feeling like other diners are on top of you; the service is friendly; the food is delicious. As everyone else says, it's a bit different from what you'd usually get in the UK, but that's part of its charm. We both enjoyed every course of the tasting menu that we had, and washed it down with some very nice drinks (gin and beer) from the very good selection they have. Overall it was a great evening and I would recommend this place to anyone who's open to the idea of trying something a bit different. I would also say that it's reasonably-priced for the quality that you get.One other thing to note is that my wife is coeliac, and they were very good at catering for her gluten free requirement. Virtually all of the food was the same for both of us, and they provided her with substitutes for anything I had that contained gluten (e.g. the bread).

Baltic food is something I've never had before and the menu was not something I would pick! To be totally honest I would rather have just gone and been surprised! The courses gave me and my wife the opportunity to eat food that we probably won't eat again until we return, monkfish liver, pine, birch, black garlic, pork fat, chicory, quince.... would I pick it... I doubt it but it was excellent! From course one to course 7 I was very pleased they were full of flavour and excitement, made by a chef at the top of his game! I really want to go back for the summer menu and be surprised all over again as it was excellent my favourite course was the monkfish but I would say that all the dishes alone would be worth the visit! Highly recommended!!!

Very unique, Baltic cuisine isn't too widely available but this take on it delivered seven courses of excellence - varying tastes, beautifully cooked and all among a lovely old building in the Jewellery Quarter. If we're being picky (as in things to take it to the level of an Adam's, say) then perhaps the offer of more of the excellent sourdough part way through, the introduction of an amuse bouche (something experimental from the chef, perhaps), further information in relation to the matched wines - the service, whilst good, is an area that could become more polished. Overall, highly recommended.

I was looking for a taster menu, having recently moved to birmingham, that would delight my partner with interesting cuisine for her birthday. Having done some research into the Michelin restaurants available I stumbled upon the two cats and their fascinating Baltic inspired cuisine. Whilst not currently holding a star they have a strong recommendation and personally I think it won't be at all long before they achieve one. So let me give you a run down of our entire night from start to finish. The place itself is well hidden down a small alleyway adding to the bistro experience. Upon entering we were greeted very warmly by the hosting staff and given a choice of tables to sit it. We were brought menus and were unhurried whilst perusing what was on offer. At this point I should note that the menu is very affordable and in my opinion cheaper than what they could charge for it; I did pose this question to our server who informed me that this was one of the initiatives the chefs wanted to push. They wanted to create a place that has exquisite food but not at the astronomical prices you would expect. I must say that they certainly delivered. We ordered the tasting menu and the accompanying wine flight, shortly after which we were served a homemade sourdough bread accompanied by a smoked butter. Smoked butter is not something I have ever tasted before and it complemented the bread perfectly. I had to ask how it was made and the way they manage it is by smoking the cream during the churning process which, whilst laborious, gave a rich and even smokiness to the finished butter. Roughly 3-5 minutes before each course the wine was brought to our table and was swiftly followed by an explanation as to why it pairs well with the food to come. Whilst some of the wines were not the most expensive, the measures were liberal and receiving 6 glasses (one was a sloe gin) for the price of £29 I can't complain. The first of our seven courses was something I would never have ordered a la carte. It consisted of finely sliced cauliflower on top of an egg, served with a hazelnut crumb. The egg was perfectly cooked and was soft with a yolk that oozed without running. The flavours were strong and paired well with the French "lip stinger" as anticipated. So onto the second course. This was another with ingredients I would usually avoid, consisting of smoked and dried beetroot with fermented damson. The flavour was incredibly new to me and there was a strong contrast between the beetroot and damson. They worked well together with the sloe gin providing a strong sweet flavour when paired with the sourness of the dish. The gin was magnificent and once again the servers were incredibly helpful in telling me where I can obtain a bottle locally; something other restaurants have yet to offer me.The third course has to be one of my favourite from the 7. A monkfish tail with liver, served with buttermilk, dill and an eastern European dark bread. The tail was succulent and well cooked, and its sweetness was contrasted by the crisp crumbs of bread. By this point we realized that the chef's really understand food and how to make it work well together.moving on to the fourth, it was a small bowl containing a few pelmeni in a mussel stock. The dish was finished at the table where a few drops of parsley oil were added, giving an artistic blotted effect. The pelmeni were, as expected, cooked perfectly. The pasta was fresh and was just the right thickness to maintain a slight spring without being chewy. It paired well with the riesling which was crisp and dry.The fifth course was very interesting. It was a heritage pork press, with chestnut, celeriac, salo and yeast extract (basically marmite). The pork itself was succulent and juicy with a beautiful pinkness (yes pink pork) that was enriched by the yeast chestnut sauce; it was accompanied well by a pinot noir rose that had a delicate sweetness to further enhance its flavours. The sixth was something I had never heard of (and therefore enquired), and was sea buckthorn (a type of berry) with meringue crisp. The picture I have uploaded with this will show that I began eating it before I even thought of capturing it. Needless to say it was extremely sweet and sticky which, although still extremely tasty, was a little sweet for me.Finally the seventh, Birch wood biscuits and ice-cream served with candied skins, pear and woodruff. This was quite simply amazing. the nuttiness of the biscuit was phenomenal and quite unlike anything I have ever tasted; it was served with a very generous helping of a desert wine produced from the Riesling grapes in south Africa. Needless to say this was my Girlfriend's favorite and given it was her birthday the restaurant, quite unexpectedly, accommodated a second even larger helping of it gratis to celebrate. (this is also uploaded) Honestly this was one of the best places I have been to. The staff were extremely helpful and attentive and were some of the best servers I have had the pleasure of meeting. The fact the even essentially donated a second dessert to mark the occasion, truly sets them apart from any other establishment; it is clear from my experience that this dining experience is designed with the customer in mind throughout and I am certain that it will have a star to its name soon!P.S. don't forget to write/draw something funny and brilliant in the notebook after the meal!

Food, however, was only average and a mixed bag as were the staff. Had an air of being made up well in advance which for a small restaurant can't be that necesary. All the food was only luke warm and the restaurant was really cold. I'd never tried Baltic cuisine before my trip to Two Cats, so I wasn't too sure what to expect. I did know that Two Cats had been getting a lot of rave reviews, so I went in with very high hopes and a great deal of anticipation.Situated just of Warstone Lane in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, once could easily miss the restaurant. Its presence made known by two inward facing cats, silhouetted on a sign overhanging a small passageway. Walk down this passageway and you will find a small, intimate venue with exposed brickwork and iron beams, hinting back to the building's industrial past. The floor is lain with beautiful red/black tiling and the windows with stained glass. The staff were very friendly and attentive. They were also very helpful in recommending accompanying drinks for the various courses.I understand that the menu changes seasonally, so I've uploaded a picture of the menu from my trip. A great benefit of the whimsical menu is the exposure to ingredients which I wouldn't necessarily have thought to try. Each dish is beautifully presented and the flavours compliment each other perfectly.Whilst I won't cover all of the courses in detail, two in particular really stood out:2nd course: "Smoked and dried beetroot, fermented damson" – essentially a super-slow cooked beetroot in yoghurt. When the dish initially came out I was somewhat underwhelmed and almost didn’t want to try it (stupid me). It was quite simply stunning. Our waiter said that it takes the chef all day to produce this very simple looking dish, but my word the end result is splendid; and4th course: "Mussel stock, parsley oil & confit potato" - the intense flavour of the stock hits you (in a good way!) with the first mouthful. It made the dish for me. Exquisite. Verdict: hands down one of my favourite dining experiences in Birmingham.

I found this on TripAdvisor looking for a good restaurant for an evening meal in Birmingham and then spent some time reading the chef's blog. It's very truthful and quite sad in places and would be useful reading for anyone wanting to start a new restaurant. After booking, I was excited and slightly nervous about what we'd be presented with. I mean, when the course is "Birch, Oak, Pine" are you just going to get a bowl of twigs?I needn't have worried. It is awesome. Niki Astley's fine art sensibilities are apparent but they would be worthless if the quality of the food didn't match its appearance. And every course was so, so interesting. I cannot recommend this highly enough, whatever the price, but at £48 per person for seven courses, this was a steal.

Been here twice in the last twelve months - last time on the 23rd December. The food is superb; it's a menu I don't think you'd ever find anywhere else - and you get a LOT of food for your money. I also love the fact that they space the sittings so you never feel rushed or on top of other diners. The service is spot on, not too much or too little, attentive without being overbearing. The best place I've eaten in Brum and definitely worth the money.

We enjoyed an excellent taster lunch menu @ £30. The opening sourdough bread with smoked butter was a promising start and the potato soup was perfect. We really enjoyed the whole meal, although dessert was our least favourite of the dishes. The service was excellent and we'll be back to try the evening set menu too. Thanks!

I love stepping out of my personal box and trying something different, something true to the area, this restaurant want was eclectically perfect. The wait was minimal, the hostess was great, the decor details were spot in and the food...Amazing!!! I tried the lobster Benedict, let me just say... I went back again 2 days later. This is precedent for me! I love to try new things so to go back to a place I had dined at days before...speaks volumes. They make their biscuits from scratch AND in house, the hollandaise sauce is their own and compliments the lobster and biscuit perfectly. Five stars!! If you have the chance...Go! Go!! Go!!!

We went last night and had the 7 course menu. We didn't know what to expect but wanted something special and different. We weren't disappointed! The flavours and textures of all the meals were excellent. For a Wednesday evening it was probably about half full, not bad for mid-week. Service was attentive, with each course explained to us. Time between courses was about right, although we left it a little while for the desserts. Try the Romanian Pinot Noir, very good. All in all a lovely evening.

Great location in Jewelry Quarter. Lovely building with a nice relaxed atmosphere. Good to see every table booked that evening. The staff are friendly and you can see the chef preparing food for service which is a bonus. Lovely range of beers and other beverages. Went there in November 2016 with my partner and had the seven course tasting menu. Whilst looking, some of the courses I wasn't a fan of, but I loved every course! The venison was superb, the desserts were lovely and I also enjoyed the leek and blackened garlic dish. The bread and smoked butter was lovely and I could have just carried on eating that! The restaurant has a lovely interior and the staff are lovely. We ordered a bottle of rose with our meal which was lovely, and as it was my partners birthday, they gave us a complimentary glass of Cava each as well. The staff had a great amount of knowledge about each dish and I cannot wait to go back again next time I'm in Birmingham!

I was looking for somewhere new and reasonably priced for a Friday night date night with the wife. Kept coming across the two cats all week and at the last minute (night before) decided to book it.I viewed the menu and there was a dish I wasn't sure about and mentioned it in the comments box & fogot about it.Two cats is tucked away next to a jewellers; it's very rustic, has a relaxed atmosphere and the team are very friendly. We had the taster menu & ordered wine separately. The food was strange, slightly wierd but tasted amazing- all,the flavours working together. One of the dishes contained liver - which I don't like. I mentioned it my comments box during the booking and before that course was served, the waitress described the dish & how the liver would be presented - I went with it. When the course came out, mine was slightly smaller than my wifer's and I had less shavings - perfect. The rest of food was great, presentation spot on & fabulous tasting wines. Overall we liked the friendly , chilled environment. It wasnt stuffy, and you weren't rushed. Cost was mid range yet still reasonable. We will be returning.

Incredible atmosphere, reasonable price (7 courses for £45.50), relaxed setting, fantastic interior, a superb beer selection (probably the most impressive I have seen in a restaurant of this ilk), approachable and cool staff, and the food was sublime.Ballsy on occasions. The leek dish and pre dessert were challenging but still fresh, unique and not scared to be brave. The venison main, oh my. Top notch. I'll recommend to everyone. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

A lovely restaurant in an unlikely location. We had the taster menu at lunch. This place scores a 2 in one of the restaurant guides this year... surely it should be a 4 or more? The menu is well thought out. the venison is particularly good. A few flavours are a little too much - but overall this was a great menu, well presented. The chicory first course was crunchy and well flavoured. With this and the leeks it was good to see a restaurant move away from the obsession with meat and fish to see great flavours. The beer I had complemented the meal well - the wine flight (not tried) was good value. I have every intention of going back.Is it one of the best meals I have had in a restaurant? Certainly in the top twenty, and there are some Michelin starred restaurants I have visited which for me scored well below it.

We have been looking forward to visiting Two Cats for months and finally we found the time we could all go together. Or friends who tasted the last menu absolutely raved about this restaurant! They rate it as one of the best in Birmingham and have done all of the local tasting menus. The place is wonderful, the decor relaxing and the finish is a mix of old and country, with industrial.Unfortunately that's where the good stuff ends. First course was unpalatable; burned chicory overpowered with fennel. The second was crab and marrowbone - this was excellent. The Monkfish was so raw it attempted to leave the plate and return to the water. One course was basically two small bits of leek, undercooked with some burned crisp of garlic sat on top. Oh and everything came with a sauce. The smoked venison was good again served with sauce galore. The first desert was so bland I've forgotten what it was.The only saving grace was the final course; three flavours of wood in ice cream, biscuit and apple - it was actually sublime and the flavours were fantastic! See the picture added. If only all courses were this amazing and innovative!Sadly they weren't and we left feeling deflated and far too out-of-pocket for the minimal flavours and food offered. The staff weren't very engaging; as if they would rather have been anywhere else (herding Monkfish, maybe).Perhaps we'll try the next tasting menu and hope for the best.

It is worth the effort of heading out of town on the tram and once you have located the restaurant (which I found a little tricky) you will have a warm welcome and a fabulous experience. I was delighted by each course and appreciated all the artistry and balance and loved that I could taste each ingredient and sauce. No little drizzles, dabs and smears here or superfluous ingredients but sensible dollops! It is bound to be compared to Adam's but in many ways I think this place is more tuned to my palate and a very reasonable price . Highlights were the leek with black garlic ( very like meat extract flavour) and the birch, oak and pine dessert which was a joy and thing of beauty. Lovely service throughout and I am am eagerly looking forward to sampling the Christmas lunch menu . Keep up the high standard and surely a Michelin star awaits?

Oh, I so wanted to love this place, I'd been really looking forward to visiting. Unfortunately I was left with a feeling of what might have been...The look and feel of the place is beguiling, the staff are friendly and informative, but the winter tasting menu leaves a bit to be desired. The first of the seven courses was sitting on a chicory leaf. If I can recall the other ingredients it's due to the brutal bitterness of the chicory - no other flavour could survive. The crab with marrowbone, potato espuma and thin potato chips was a very nice dish, the most moreish offering. The leek course tasted very much of leek and was awkward texture wise.Unfortunately my wife and I both found our monkfish rather tough, though the accompanying liver was rich and tasty. The venison divided the table based on its smokiness, all agreed the beetroot-based sauce lacked punch. Both desserts worked really well though, and were arguably the most imaginative creations of the evening. The accompanying wine (and vodka) flight was well-selected and very good value.

The fixed price tasting menu allows you to experience a full range of flavours. My favourite was the venison which was beautifully cooked with sweet chestnuts and a deep source to die for. And then their was the beetroot -the yogurt acting as a great balance to the earthy taste of the beetroot. Not everything was to our taste - the meringue did not work for me - but overall a fantastic evening and somewhere we will return to

This place only has a 6/7 course tasting menu which is intriguing, but I imagine they would do anything from it should you not want the whole deal. The food is very unusual with quite surprising but great flavours and textures indeed this is the essence of the place - and with a similarly off beat wine list. The restaurant is simple but stylish, the service is charming and overall Two Cats is extremely good value. It's also a really pleasant change from the Michelin starred but more conventional places around town. We went early on a Wednesday night and were the only people there so you need to get down there, give it a go then recommend it because if you don't TCK won't survive without a better level of mid week custom.

What a wonderful eclectic tasting menu, with ingredients many of which you haven't experienced before or at least seen used in that way, prettily presented and with wonderful lingering tastes! Everything, all 6 or 7 course of it, was excellent, with the highlights for me being the monkfish and the venison. The positioning is Baltic cuisine with Northern European influence ( including Russian), and and with such quality of execution makes it a stand out go-to venue anywhere, even in Birmingham with all of its Michelins.

Lovely warm atmosphere, stellar food, great service, and although it's off the main drag, we loved the location. It's carved it's own unique niche and although it's fine dining, it sets itself apart from the other fine dining restaurants in the city. We argued in the taxi home about which was the best dish. I thought the monkfish was particularly good, but there were plenty of very close runners up! The heritage pork was a standout, though frankly, I could eat a kilo of the goat cheese pelmeni with a pint of broth - it was very good indeed!Even the smoked butter & sourdough bread was totally different, delicious and memorable. I would feel sad not to have it again. The wine flight was good value and well matched. We had a great night - the tasting menu was a great opportunity to have a foray into new Baltic cuisine without having to commit to just three dishes. The restaurant & staff have a lovely convivial atmosphere, and the food was simply beautiful. I'm not sure why it took us so long to come here, but it won't be so long before we return.

Excellent the pork. The desert very poor. The wine list very interesting, although extremely overpriced(at least three times up to the market price). The choise of Malagouzia, greek white variety, from Alpha estate, matches very nice with the menu. The effort of the chef remarkable, although it needs a lot of work with the taste of the ingredients and the prices of the wines. It worth a visit

It's seldom we are offered a menu that contains 4 ingredients we've never tasted before (sea buckthorn, monkfish liver, woodruff and birch wood) So a visit to Two Cats Kitchen provided some excitement, as we eagerly awaited each of the 7 successive courses of the taster menu. The clever design of courses also provides contrasting textures and temperatures, plus the occasional dash of pure theatre. At £45.50 it's more than competitive; we added on a wine flight by way of celebratory indulgence. We live 20 seconds from this delightful eatery and didn't know it existed until my wife was looking at Michelin star restaurants in Birmingham and noticed Two Cats in the guide. Ok, it doesn't have a star yet but we couldn't help feeling that it will only a matter of time. After being greeted by a very friendly chap we were escorted to our table. The decor is minimal with exposed brickwork and a large wooden backdrop to one side. The room has a rustic feel to it and an exposed hearth at the farthest end. Staff were a plenty. On this evening a set 6 course menu at £45 per head was offered. The accompanying wine flute was £29 per person which we opted not to take.Instead we started with G&T's which set the tone for fine dinner as it was very high quality gin served with an equally good tonic. After the warm crusted bread with smoked butter arrived (and was devoured) the first course arrived, a palate cleanser consisting of a tasty black current wafer. This was followed by plate after plate of culinary expertise and imagination. We were treated and indulged by a chef who cooked with passion and flare and chose to serve several dishes in person, speaking with us about his creations enthusiastically. We appreciated him taking the time to do so and the personal touch. After the final course and a delicious bottle of white wine (priced around £30) we felt totally satisfied and quite at home, fortunately for us we almost were. I have deliberately not described each dish as that for us was part of the experience, not having any perception of what was to arrive from the kitchen. So if you like a level of excitement, to taste the unknown, have an open mind and enjoy fantastic food, go, you won't be at all disappointed.

The meal was very reasonably priced for a tasting menu. The food was unlike any tasting menu I have had before. I enjoyed every course especially the sturgeon and the venison. The only course I was less sure of was the grilled and slated plum with grass soup. The alcohol option which paired with every course was also very well matched, according to my husband.

We ate here last night and were overall impressed by the food. It was a very interesting tasting menu and some of the dishes were exceptional...a couple not as good as others. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. The only problem was the lack of stock of drinks. With a choice of 4 bottles of white and 4 red it is not helpful to have run out of 1 of each without providing an alternative. So you were essentially left with a choice of 3 bottles of wine. This was the same with several beers on the menu too.

This was our second visit (first time only a month after it opened). We had been so excited by it the first time: the lovely haladnik with egg yolk and the amazing Sorrel dessert being a highlight. We couldn't wait to come back but as it is a tasting menu only we waited a year so the menu would change. The main change was the addition of drink accompaniments. These were all very enjoyable, well chosen and quite quirky/fun. Unfortunately, the menu was not as exciting as last time. Three of the eight courses were identical to our last visit and one of the courses was very similar. The carpaccio was an improvement on last time (we loved the crunch of the dark rye!) but the Crab was bland and the Sorrel just wasn't as exciting. The 'cheesecake' which accompanied the Sorrel and the soggy, bland choux bun were so dissapointing that I wish we hadn't been served them at all. Ending on the Sorrel last time was fantastic, and even though it didn't hit the same spot this time (more bitter? less granola?) that is still the best way to end the meal. We had hoped that Two Cats would have evolved in the last year, but it seems to have creatively stagnated. It is still very good but could be so much more...

So, i've visited this restaurant in Feb where i had a outstanding meal.I have a shellfish allergy so when booking i asked would it be possible in such a short time frame for the kitchen to work their magic and give me an equally as amazing menu - i was assured that this would be capable and so i booked. When we arrived i got asked if i ate crab, no, no i don't. Not because i don't want to, because i've already stated i can not eat shell fish, so on wards and upwards. To start we had quail egg, pate squiggly thing that was probably 7cm all round - we were then told to put it all in our mouth in one go. Sorry but no, i'm not a hamster. Anyway, i ate this how i wanted and it tasted like a nice crisp.Next we had 'haladnik' it was basically a extra cold beetroot soup with random radish, mint and spring onion. The color was amazing, but the flavor was just not nice.Raw beef, dark bread, fermented garlic and egg yolk was next. The bread nearly broke my teeth it was that hard and was also very overpowering flavor wise.Goats cheese pelmeni was next and this was lovely. I enjoyed this as much as i enjoyed it last time.Next was had the crab, seaweed and sea lettuce which was absolutely disgusting, the crab wasn't fresh crab meat and tasted like tinned tuna. yummy. Apparently it was meant to taste like this as it was influenced by a trip to Japan. hey ho.The best was yet to come. I had purple potato, leeks some random grains a spinach pure in chicken stock. yay.(this was naff as) Just because i can not eat shell fish it doesn't mean i can't eat meat / fish. Why because of my intolerance should i suffer and not get the standard of food as everyone else? i too am a paying guest.Next was Lamb, broad beans and samphire - average to poor dish - nothing brought this dish together. The beans were in some kind of mint sauce that tasted just like the one my nan uses from the jar.Next was sweet - we had sorrel, apple and elderflower. The sorrel leaf was delicious - the cheesecake thing was dense as and really hard. The final was a potato - random bit of theater here. basically a profiterole, very random and very average.Over the experience was ok. The staff were good and friendly but the food was just not what i remember, the menu seemed very odd and rushed (in my opinion) It didn't flow and i was very disappointed.Sorry two cats i won't be returning, especially when there's so much going on in Birmingham food scene these days.

After going to almost every pop up that Two Cats Roaming Kitchen did I cannot believe it's taken me so long to visit the restaurant. We had 8 courses of perfectly balanced Baltic inspired gorgeousness. Every course was beautifully presented and delivered by staff who were not just really knowledgeable about the food, but also really passionate about it.There wasn't really a negative course, but stand out ones were the beef tartare, it had a charcoal oil and rye bread croutons and it was perfectly paired with a porter. The goats cheese stuffed in a really thin pasta type dough that melted in your mouth in a delicate white onion broth. And the finale which was a profiterole because choux is the best kind of pastry. I also really enjoyed having samphire with lamb, I've only ever had it with fish before and the oyster emulsion was beautiful. I'm never eating mayo again, now I know this exists as an alternative. Also incredible value for money, I would struggle to think of anywhere else in the city that offers a tasting menu and wine flight of this quality at a similar price.

The food and service were amazing a fabulous journey of drinks and food, each course balanced and interesting in its own right, I would struggle to pick a favourite. The theatre of dishes finished in the restuarant or at the table only added to the overall performace. Go for the drinks flight, its not just wine and makes innovative matches.

I visited Two Cats in early August on a Friday night with my partner. You have to look out for the distinctive "two cats" logo as it is down a little alley off the main road. I have to say, this restaurant did not meet my expectations.Firstly, the positives. The food was well presented, and the courses well contrasted. The menu is carefully thought out and has an usual yet delicious taste. The restaurant has an interesting layout with tasteful decor. The best course was definitely the sorrel, fantastic flavours and such a great palate cleanser. Now, although the interior is well designed - the ambiance isn't there. Despite the restaurant being fully booked, we were the only people in the restaurant for our first hour of the evening. Due to the layout, this is slightly uncomfortable. The service was average - both waitresses seemed to be on their first day. Finally, the same six songs played on repeat the whole evening. I know its about the food - but this was a tad annoying! In summary, this is a great find (and is above average) - but make sure you book a table for late evening. For a taster menu restaurant in Birmingham, Two Cats is well valued and is a great way to experience new culinary delights.

This is an amazing 8 course Baltic tasting menu with delicacies such as a quail's egg with caviar, haladnik (buttermilk, beetroot and herb soup) and my favourite the sorrel pudding (sorrel granache wrapped with sorrel leaves) with sorrel mousse and a white topping. The service was brilliant from all, the food just kept coming and John, the guy with the curly moustache was both very knowledgeable and funny. All the courses are described to a tee as the team bring the dishes out to you, which starts your taste buds going before you even start to enjoy the food. 8 small courses are far more filling than you might think. This is definitely a wonderful tasting experience.

After many hours of searching for a place for me and my partner to celebrate our anniversary, Two Cats stood out after reading that they would specially prepare us a vegetarian tasting menu. The food was amazing, some of the best I've ever had, i really couldn't fault any of the 8 courses and the cold soup was a great new experience. The location is intimate, the service was impeccable and the for this price, I doubt you will find a better place to eat. Will definitely return!

Excellent place for dining. Nice looking interior, absolutely delicious food, and top service. What more could you ask for. I tried the Salt and pepper tempura squid, as well as roasted scallops for starters. For main enjoyed the Grilled Peruvian chicken. Top notch.

I took my couple to Chapter to celebrate her getting anew job. We often use Chapter as the food is excellent and the service impeccable. Sadly, 14th September we didn't have the best experience. The food and service were as good as ever, but there was a birthday party of some 30 people which were unbelievably loud - raucous even. It was like being a football match. I have no issue with restaurants entertaining such number - or even such groups enjoying themselves, but it would nice to be advised in advance as it almost ruined the evening.

We had a special event here for my partners menu. Hengata was absolutely incredible! They prepared a totally new tasting menu for the occasion which was much better value for money than anywhere else in Harborne. The food was perfect and the chefs and the waiting team couldn’t have looked after us better. Thank you to the Hengata team!
