Girls who walk lunch gathering - Tudors restaurant was recommended and booked on as a Groupon Steak and Prosecco deal. Not being a steak eater, this was swapped out for Fish and chips and was no problem for our accommodating waiting staff. Starter (Not part of the deal) was Shrimps with garlic butter and bread. Whilst this was quite enjoyable - the Grease from the garlic butter was excessive and not conducive for a pre-diabetic diet. The mains - Fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce. Was plentiful and chips nice and fluffy. The fish was not In my opinion fresh and the batter was over done. The mushy peas was dry and bland and I did not eat it or the Tartare sauce. Dessert (Not part of the deal) was Vanilla Ice cream and a welcomed treat on such a hot day/weather. All in all I was disappointed with the food and felt it was "Just okay". Will I visit again? The jury is out. Thanks for the friendly service though.

Went here with a Groupon deal. The staff were friendly and professional, and our steaks were both tasty and cooked well. For the price of the deal, they were a bargain. The dining room was really nice, and we had a relaxed lunch. I love that they have not tried to spruce the restaurant. You can feel the history of the place, and it was fascinating to think of all the people who had eaten in these rooms over the past 600 years.

We live locally and have never been so when we saw a Groupon, we were tempted. The menu was quite limited via the Groupon (2 starters, 3 mains, house red/white wine). We upgraded the wine by paying the difference, potentially could have done so with the mains as well. Groupon was for 2 people, with 2 courses plus wine but son ordered from menu. Sat in the garden as finally summer has arrived. Service was polite and friendly. We had white bait to start, which was pleasant. 55 minute wait for mains, which left us with a hangry teen who had not ordered a starter. 2 of the mains were great aubergine parmigiana and fish & chips. The chicken dish for £17.95 was more miss than hit, too many flavours with chicken wrapped around sundried tomatoes, cream cheese and spinach and served with some kind of sauce / gravy (this is not on the menu on the website or I’d double check). We felt the chicken would have been better served with salad, but they’d served it almost as part of a roast with potatoes and broccoli. Only other moan was the drunk clientele in the garden. I’d hazard a guess at estate agents, they were clearly regulars as they knew the staff. While this isn’t the venue’s fault, it certainly is their issue if putting other people off. It would have been nice to have a lean to sit inside from staff. If you enjoy bar stool philosophy, rock up on an early Friday night to the Tudors. If you’re just going for the food, it’s basically pub grub.

Chose the Christmas turkey dinner which was a mistake. The plate was hotter than the food and it tasted as if it was yesterday’s left overs. My husband had the burger and he only managed half of it. Maybe we a used to better food, dreadful meal and nothing taken off the bill when we complained. Only two other couples in the place. Would not return

So disappointed. We bought a Groupon deal and thought we'd try the restaurant out. With this being such a lovely building in a fantastic location, I was really looking forward to the meal. What we got was honestly awful and I've just come home and been sick. There was no atmosphere. A radio station playing. An empty place. And terrible food. I don't know if I've ever written a review before but really don't want people paying full price for something of such poor quality. If you're trying to entice people through these empty doors by offering Groupon deals, at least make a good effort to get them back. I'd love to own this building. Such an opportunity to make it a thriving business but with this standard of food and decor, it's no wonder the place is empty. I would like to add that we ordered peppercorn sauce with our meal. Please look at the photo of what we were charged £6 for. They served it spilt and looking like this then actually charged £6 ???

Second time we have been here within a few weeks and both times it was great. We particularly liked the fact that although we used the Tastecard the portions were good - particularly the starters. The wild mushroom risotto was really good as was the Caesar Salad. I was very slightly disappointed with the portion size of the Aubergine parmigiana. Fortunately it was my wife who had it rather than me and she found it tasty and filling. Service was good too.

Felt like a unique place to visit. The interior is old style and beautiful. Good space between the tables. Comfy chairs. We particularly enjoyed the background music of 2020s dance. Tudor styling, Nathan Dawe sounding! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We were very well looked after. I really enjoyed my chicken. It was moist with really good flavours. The cheeseboard blew me away. Such fantastic flavours and a plentiful amount. A great way to finish off the meal.

Food was AMAZING - our group had the cod, lamb, burger, schnitzel, chicken goujons and pizza - all cooked to perfection. Even the vegetables were delicious and kids ate them without any nagging! There was plenty of choice for my gluten-free father-in-law. The service was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. And the ambience was great too - found the picture of Lord Lovat (the fictional Jamie Fraser's Grandfather for any Outlander fans) - great piece of history nestled in St Albans. Can't believe we haven't found this gem sooner - will definitely be back.

We visited Tudors on Christmas Day having left it late to book. The food was, at best, average. The starter of scallops with a pea pancake was perfectly pleasant, albeit it slightly cold. I was asked how I would like my goose main cooked and requested pink. It came very over-cooked and chewy. The blueberry, onion and fig sauce was slightly bland, and the onions appeared to have come from a jar of pickled silverskins that had had a bit of a rinse. The cheese board was the best course, but hard to get wrong. The chocolate soufflé had to be sent back as it was raw gloop. The staff were all very pleasant but we weren’t offered any water during lunch, which seemed odd given the bill of £335 for two people.

This is a charming old building, nicely decorated for Christmas. The meal cost £130 per person for Christmas lunch - pleasant pub grub. The turkey was reconstituted rather than carved off the bone, sprouts a bit over done. I don't think all the food was freshly made on the premises using local ingredients as they claimed - some elements seemed definitely factory made. My husband had the lamb which was very good. No drinks included in the price of the meal - coffee was supposed to be, but they charged us (they did apologize and remove the charge once we pointed it out) . I ordered from the champagne list to receive a bottle of sparkling wine which was room temperature although it did gradually chill after being in a cooler with ice for a while. The staff were very nice - there was a 12.5 % service charge added to the bill of £360 for three people without drinks. The music ranged from a Beyonce album to generic pop to poppy versions of Christmas songs, quite loud, and the room was very hot and smelling of Bisto gravy. It was pleasant but overpriced, but that's what you get when you leave it too late to book anywhere else for Christmas lunch! When you pay that much you do expect a slightly more premium experience, though.

The food we had was ok, but the wait for each course was ridiculous! 30 minutes for the starters & over 40 minutes for the main course! And one of those was completely wrong! My wife who was the unfortunate one said that she didn’t want the correct meal as it had got to late. But out came the meal,5 minutes later but was incomplete as one of the vegetables was missing. The mash potatoes were cold, the meat hot! Then out came the broccoli, but my wife told them to take it all away. They said they didn’t think they would be busy so the chef sent his assistant home. It was mid week but most people arriving had booked ahead. We asked to see the manager, but the waiter said he was in charge & said he’d take the meal off the bill. I told him, that we were on a Groupon, which he knew about as we had shown it when we arrived. That threw him totally & he just offered us that he wouldn’t charge us the service charge! At that we gave up & left.

We visited this restaurant on Saturday as it was a good location for a lunch time stop on our way to a family party in Cambridge. It was also advertised on the Tastecard website so was meant to make an ideal stop. We arrived at the restaurant and asked if they still accepted tastecard and was told that they did. We ordered our food (burger and chips mainly) and it took over 40 minutes to arrive. The food was OK but nothing special. when we went to pay the waiter said that we had to order desert in order to get to use the tastecard. The listing on the Tastecard app does not show any need for at least two courses and at no time during our visit (even when we asked about using the Tastecard) did any of the staff say that we had to order two courses. when questioning this the waiter was very rude and just said it is Tastecard's fault not theirs. He then said that the best he could do was to take £10 off of our bill (according to their advert on Tastecard we should have got 50% off of food which was around £40). If the service would have been better we may have had time to order deserts but hey ho !!

We went here on the Groupon deal, not having been here before and not knowing what to expect. Brilliant value and definitely worth it. Attentive staff, the blond lady that served is was lovely. Good food and generous portions. Such a traditional setting. My lamb shank was really tender and the burger was massive and homemade. Only criticism is the included service charge, when we checked with the lady it would go to her, she said no, so we removed it from the bill and gave directly to her, so check your tip is going to who has served you.

We visited for a last minute Friday evening meal for two using Tastecard. The restaurant was empty save for two tables, not a bad thing, although slightly concerning as it was 8 o clock on a Friday. We had to wait for a waitress to come which took about 5 minutes as she was off somewhere in the hotel. When we were seated we were given two menus and I asked for the wine list. After about 10 minutes a different waitress came over and asked if we were ready to order to which I said yes but was still waiting for the wine list, which she went off to get and brought one to us before we even saw the first waitress again. A third waitress then came over and took our food and drink order. The Malbec I ordered was actually very good and whilst waiting for our starters the first waitress finally came back and asked if we were OK and asked if we had ordered yet. Clearly there was no communication at all between the three of them. When the starters came, we had ordered the Tudors shrimp cocktail and King prawns. The toast with the prawns was a slightly warmed slice of cheap brown bread cut into quarters with no butter and arrived 5 minutes after the prawns as it had been forgotten and my shrimp cocktail, served in a cereal bowl, was so bland I found it inedible (and I'm not a fussy eater). We had to ask again for the table water to be sent over and to the (third) waitress' credit when she came over to ask if everything was OK we told her about the issues and she took my starter off the bill and gave us a free round of drinks. For the mains we ordered the freshly chopped steak burger and special marinated pork belly. The burger was OK but the paprika chips had no paprika on them and my main was just a lump of pork sat on its own in the middle of a massive plate, apparently the only accompaniment to this was a bowl of red cabbage with pear. It looked awful and I wish I had been told that this was all that came with it so I could have ordered something else. To be fair to the chef the pork was actually very tasty as was the red cabbage and pear but by this point both of us were so unimpressed that we couldn't wait to get out of there. When we finally paid one of the waitresses actually apologised for our 'nightmare of a meal'. The food is overpriced without using Tastecard and we will not be visiting again.

My husband & I recently had a meal at this restaurant together with 6 friends. We arrived at 6.00 pm & all had the set 3 course menu. We all enjoyed our meals & thought it was excellent value at £20 per person including wine. Most of the time we were the only party in the restaurant which was fine as we made our own entertainment but I would have been disappointed if I'd just been there with my husband. I feel that the slightly dowdy & run-down exterior of this restaurant belies the great food & service within. The decor of the restaurant is also in keeping with the style but wood panelling isn't very modern these days. I would definitely return here in the future but only with friends as I wouldn't want to just have a table for two with no one else dining !

We chose to eat in the restaurant as whilst there are plenty of eateries nearby we didn't want to go too far bearing in mind we were leaving the dogs and the food was very, very good, both at dinner and at breakfast. That said my partner did not enjoy his main course, it certainly had flavour, but lacked in finess, a large pile of cabbage and potato accompanying his lamb chops was a little over rustic. The added and brilliant bonus though which made it for me was the piano player who is in the bar every Friday and Saturday evening and who was not only very able, but who also got the crowd going, playing requests and medley's so that by the time he left at 10.30 we were all having a great time and singing. Fantastic atmosphere, really friendly and most welcome.Breakfast the next morning was really very good too.

I visited the restaurant for Mother's Day with my mum and sister. This was my first visit. The outside of the restaurant was absolutely beautiful and we were really impressed. We were seated and a waitress came over very promptly. My mum was offered a complimentary glass of prosecco. My mum asked if she could have wine instead and they were more than willing to swap for her. We perused the menu, which looked very appealing and varied. We decided on a Sunday roast. The restaurant was busy and the decor is grand looking and beautiful. The many windows allow in a lot of light, bringing in a lovely brightness to the restaurant. With 15 minutes, our meal arrived. We were very pleasantly surprised by the appearance of the food. The portions were very generous and it looked stunning! After the meal, the table was cleared promptly and dessert menus arrived, again another variety of dishes to choice from. The very polite waitress took our order and we awaited the surprise of dessert. It arrived within 10 minutes and we weren't disappointed at all. Truly delicious. We weren't rushed at all, the atmosphere was lovely and the staff excellent and attentive. I would highly recommend the restaurant again and they made our visit as special as our mum. Considering it was Mother's Day, we didn't feel rushed at all. Highly recommend the lamb and the apple, raisin and rum crumble!

We dined at the Tudor Restaurant last night and have to say had an absolutely wonderful evening. We haven't dined in the Tudor restaurant since September 2014 for one reason but have been in at Great Fosters for many other occasions. The Tudor restaurant is very special and the level of service was always good. Yet now it is on another level. From when we entered to when we left we received nothing but fantastic, friendly and welcoming service. The staff were all attentive, with smiles and pleasantries. We started with canapés in the bar, which were exquisite and a bottle of excellent wine. The restaurant now has a Michelin star and the food and service were certainly worthy of it. The food was excellent at every level and every course. We could not fault it in any way. I have to mention the chocolate dessert as it was fantastic, probably the best chocolate dessert I have had. It's an ideal venue for that special occasion. Well worth it and we've every intention of going back. We would hilt recommend this place for that special occasion.

Located within the White Hart Hotel the lovely oak panelled dining room with inglenook fireplace makes for a gorgeous setting. We were served by a charming Italian waitress from Milan who was very helpful throughout. The menu has plenty of choice albeit the starters were a bit limited. The mains choice was good with different meats and fish to choose from. A decent selection of wine. The food was hot, well presented and what we had was tasty. Desserts choice was very typical but what we had was again well presented and tasty. If you are a resident there is 10% discount. Overall a lovely setting, nothing outstanding in terms of the food, which is not a complaint. We had an enjoyable dinner, service was good and not over priced.

Went here a few years ago and the service was diabolical but the food was good. So we thought we would give them another try and this time the service was fine, we had a very nice efficient young waitress and the food was very good. It was quiet there but it was a lunch time. Glad we went back.

Like many other people, we went here as part of the Travelzoo steak and Prosecco deal. The waitress was very friendly and welcoming. We were a bit early so had a drink in the bar before going to out table. We opted for starters as well. The baked Camembert was superb and risotto pretty good. The steaks were disappointing: cooked as ordered but tough to the point I question whether they really were fillet. The veg were tasty and well cooked. We shared a Baileys cheesecake which was ok, not outstanding in any way.Apart from the steaks, our other complaint was what struck us as pretty sharp practice: The bill included the full price of the steak and Prosecco, 12.5% service was added to everything, then the Travelzoo deal was applied but the service charge remained and came to something like £15. I asked the manager to take it off and we gave the waitress a cash tip.We don't expect to go back.

6 of us went for fillet steak and prosecco (travelzoo offer). Asked for the prosecco when we arrived and then waited 25 minutes for it. We all had starters which were ok although the rice in the kedgeree was very al dente. It was a nice touch to be told we could swop the steak for anything else on the menu but we all stayed with the fillet. All 6 of us were disappointed it was very chewy and even the steak knives had trouble cutting it. We all said if we had paid full price (£24) for the steak it would have gone back. As it was we just thought "you get what you pay for" and put up with it. Only 2 had deserts but they were very good. Don't think they will be seeing us again..

Had a great fillet steak dinner on a travelzoo deal for £29 for 2 people, glass of presecco each and a fillet steak dinner. A bargin and a great steak! Ambiance was spoint by playing pop music in such an old building, but then the servers were all very youung, inexperienced staff.Great value. Go!

Came here for a Sunday roast, there was no staff to be seen when we walked in and as I am disabled I needed to sit, the dinning room was near empty so I sat down instead of waiting - good job too as we waited a good view minutes before any staff appeared. When the waitress did appear she was very kind and explained she was on her own, we then went to order - sadly the menu was outdated and what I wanted the lamb roast was no longer available.I went with the roast pork and my partner the roast beef, both came with a huge Yorkshire pudding, carrots and parsnips, roast potatoes, gravy and cauliflower cheese. Both meals where very good, the beef was tender and the pork had lovely crackling, both were quite fatty cuts of meal, but where easy enough to cut. The roast potatoes were some of the best we had had in a restaurant! The carrots and parsnips were cooked well and not over done. The Yorkshire pudding was a great size but a bit doughy. The cauliflower cheese was a very odd extra, it was watery and unnecessary - scarp it and the plate would be perfect (with maybe some stuffing added instead). The roast costed £15 which is rather pricey and the dessert were £6+ which is also expensive, which might explain why it was so empty inside - it definitely wasn't the food. It was clear the chef had put effort into the food he was serving and it was extremely pleasing. I had struggling walking in and the staff, setting and food was definitely a pick me up. Worth a visit if you can afford it. Just as a side note, the ladies is up some stairs and I couldn't find a disabled loo, which is always a shame.

We chose to try this place because it was next to our hotel. It was late afternoon but still time for the lunch specials. I chose the 8L lunch with two choices (hummus, followed by a lamb salad) and my spouse tried the pulled pork sandwich. All were fine, tho my husband found the sauce a bit too sweet. service was great; she brought us extra tap water as well. Should also note we ate in the pub; they have a much fancier dining area as well, but we felt more comfy with less tableware!

My husband and I tried the 3 course set menu which was an amazing £9.95 each for three courses. I had the soup to start which was lovely and creamy and my husband had the hummus and pitta which was also very nice. We both had the pulled pork burgers which were okay but the chips were the star of the main meal, the puddings were lovely, I had a treacle tart with Ice cream and raspberry coulis and my husband had the peanut butter parfait. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and maintains its tudor style throughout. We will be hopefully returning soon to try out their ghost night with three course meal.

Enjoyable evening, good surrounding, good service, and very good food. Most of us had a three course meal. The servings were quite generous especially the desert. The food is freshly made so there is a wait. They do have set menus from time to time which are worth taking advantage of. Enjoyed the atmosphere of this 16 century hotel. Recommend The White Hart Hotel, bar, and restaurant for it good food and comfortable and relaxing surroundings. It is right opposite the abbey.

The restaurant is not outstanding but we would certainly class it between 7-8 out of 10. The member of staff who was serving us was very friendly and made jokes. We had excellent Chilean sauvignon blanc by the glass and also a good Italian dessert wine.

We have visited the White Hart Hotel and Tudors Restaurant & Bar on many occasions. They do a really nice Sunday Roast with all the trimmings, but you must go early to avoid disappointment. Unlike most places in the City Centre, they have free parking which is a big plus. We recently popped in for a pint and there was a charming chap playing the piano. Very talented and very entertaining. Bar staff were very attentive, drinks and spirits were nice and cold.Speaking of spirits, as a natural medium and psychic, I can confirm there are also number of ghostly guests inhabiting the White Hart Hotel and Tudors Restaurant & Bar. From the little girl in the back stairs to the monks and knights in the cellar, there is always a full house. Be sure to do the monthly Ghost Tour and dinner... and visit the cellar, room 8 and the restrooms for an extra special evening.

Very odd experience here. Went in for a drink at the bar and talk about a dysfunctional set up. Everyone in there appeared to be a dodgy crony of the the manners-challenged barman (who had a different agenda than welcoming guests), and let's just say that there was more on offer from some of them than wholesome good companionship and cheer. If I was the owner, I'd do a bit of a 'spring clean' of both staff and the downbeat 'regulars' before the summer tourists arrive. But maybe the owner likes things the way they are........which would be a great pity given the heritage and potential of the place.

Went in the company of 2 friends. The staff were friendly but the place was sadly rather empty which didn't do much for the atmosphere. It's an ancient building and full of interesting things to see. The seared scallops starter was delightfully presented as were all the courses but 2 at nearly £9.00 for a starter was over the top on price. The slow roasted blade of beef was I am told delicious. The crust on the chicken & ham pie was very hard and the mashed potatoes could have been warmer. The beetroot salmon gravadlax was I am reliably informed wonderful. The sorbets though limited in choice of flavour were very good indeed. Service was incredibly slow but fortunately we had plenty to talk about with friends. I cant quite work out why when the place was empty, only 4 others that I could see were seated. The vegetables arrived 5 minutes after the mains! Get your act together Tudor and speed things up. The prices were for the size of portions over the top.

The bar area was perfectly oldy worldy low beams suits of armour etc. The only thing that let the place down was the staff. Not very friendly or welcoming

We ate here on a Thursday evening , the restaurant was half full and pub side was busy . We were shown to our table by a friendly and polite waiter and served by a really helpful waitress . Unfortunately one of the chairs was broken but we were moved to another table which was even better so we were happy ! I had potted scrimp and crab to start with orange jelly and it was superb. Really nicely presented and tasted great , my girlfriend had the beetroot gravlax which again looked beautiful and she that it was.Mains she had lamb rump asked to be cooked medium rare and it was cooked to perfection . Nice garnish . I had the roast goose breast and it was again cooked to perfection , spot on fondant potato and braised red cabbage , I would have liked a little bit of green veg but this didn't let the meal down at all . As a ex chef and now in catering sales my standards are high but this is was well worth it . We also had the taste card which gave us 50% off but would have been more than happy to pay full price . Great to see a chef who cares about what he is cooking and front of house staff looking after your every need . Exactly how it should be in this industry Will be returning very soon probably next week !

This was a last minute booking at 7pm and only one other table was in use. It's a beautiful warm room and the 2 staff were efficient and friendly but had no pressure of numbers! All the mains were excellent . Superbly cooked steak lamb and sea bass. Pudding was a bit of a let down but overall great value and a shame such good was being enjoyed by so few people on a Friday night.

We were really looking forward to our meal out at this restaurant as we had been talking about going for a while, and left pretty disappointed with the service and value for money. It didn't help that we were the only diners in the wood paneled dining room, but with a table booked at 6 this was a poor decision on our behalf. On arrival the pint poured for my partner was so bad that she couldn't finish it - which never happens! The room was cold due to a window being open (in January!) as it seemed they were having a problem with the smoke from the open fire, so with no staff around I had to close it. Without anywhere obvious to hang our coats I had to go and find a member of staff to ask for them to be stored. When provided with menus half of mine was missing, so again I had to leave my seat to change it for a complete one. The one thing that we really disliked was the mucic; at such a historical and traditional pub/restaurant I wouldn't expect to hear cheesy pop music blaring out of the speakers all evening. The food was good but not worthy of the prices. I didn't feel like the meal represented value money even with 50% off on the Tastecard. With more attentive service I think I would have felt more inclined to leave a tip, but quite honestly I didn't feel like it was deserved.

Went on a Travelzoo offer and this was really very enjoyable. Very young waitresses, Ros being particularly good, and the food was well cooked, squid, fish platter, steak and the most incredible triple cooked chips I've ever eaten. A couple of nice desserts to finish and this is a place to come back too, especially as it's in such a lovely location. Recommended
