Troy Bar in Hackney

Nostalgic old skool venue that oozes traditions of the old London music scene. The food is fabulous and definitely worth a try for a indulgent lunch.

Would not recommend at all. My partner and I arrived about 30 minutes after their opening time on Saturday, and everything was shut. Eventually an unfriendly bouncer came out and said they're not open yet and to go back in 20 minutes. We went back at 9pm and they were finally open, an hour late. The unfriendly bouncer told us to open our bags for any alcohol, we just had water, and he wasn't explaining why we weren't allowed to take it in. Luckily my boyfriend had been there before and knew of their "no liquids" policy, but it's the bouncer's job to explain that. Finally went in, enquired about food at the bar and they said they don't serve food on the weekend, which isn't stated anywhere on their website. It was 9pm, we hadn't had dinner yet as this was there we planned to eat with some live music, so we just left and went elsewhere. The bar staff were also somewhat uninviting too. Overall a pretty awful experience, and I definitely will not be going there again. I'm sure there are better places for live Jazz music in East London that are better organised and more inviting.

Great jam session on Wednesday! The stuff literally kicks you out, they don’t even politely say it, you can understand from the stuff they say, they are happy you are finally leaving, especially the security personel.

Band was awesome!!!! We went on a Tuesday and the musicans are simply amazing, they made my night I would give the band 5 stars if I could. Food was tasty, not a big menu but the food was nice. Lady serving the food was lovely and bar staff were good too. They don't take cash upon entry or for food but card at the bar, so walk with cash. Decor needs some work and didn't make sense where they had some tables and chairs as the security was constantly asking guests to move in for H&S. Toilets need attention as they were awful.

I'm a professional musician and came to London on vacation. I thought it would be nice to vibe and come to a jam session. I wish I'd read the reviews first. Door staff was atrocious and the policy of CASH ONLY for food is absurd. Ignorant bouncer rudely demanded 8pounds in cash just to enter. We specifically asked if we could use the card once inside and he flippantly said yes. Nobody carries cash around anymore. in short we couldn't order food cause it's in cash. They wouldn't even refund us our entry since we left immediately. This place is obviously a racket and doesn't deserve to have any clientele.

Rip off and ignorant person at the door. London's best kept secret for a reason, the bouncer lied and told me I can pay inside with the card. This place REQUIRES YOU TO PAY IN CASH. THEY LIE TO GET YOU INSIDE. Horrible place and they should be ashamed of themselves.

Fun bar, but drink prices were mental. Security staff lovely, but bar staff quite moody. Unlikely to return.

I was in a group of 11 music students, aged from 19 to 25, and the bouncers picked on one of our younger members and told us they wouldn't serve him alcohol at the bar, despite him being 19 and having his ID with him. Then they started getting confrontational, telling us to just read the sign next to them (despite that sign saying you had to be 18 or over). It felt like it was an insecure bouncer who got a bit flighty, although I can't understand why. Maybe his wife didn't give him the good beat. Can't be going round taking it out on everyone. It's a shame, we were each going to spend at least 30 quid a head there, we were looking forward to a good evening. It's even more strange because we could see in and the place was empty. Maybe they think picking on teenagers makes them a more sophisticated bar...

Me and a group of 10 musicians who attend music university decided Troy Bar would be a good place to spend the night with some nice food and music and drinks, but we were turned away at the door. The security were rude and didn’t want to tell us why we weren’t allowed in. They said it was because some of us were 19. They didn’t want to clarify the rules and were overall rude and dismissive to us. We went round the corner and had an incredible night at the Blues Kitchen instead.

The term "hidden gem" is grossly overused in online reviews, but this establishment fully deserves the title. I used to get lunch here at least once weekly; its portion-size-to-value-to-deliciousness ratio unbeatable by a country mile for the area. I finally visited for a Jam evening and was blown away by the talent of the musicians. A fantastic place to spend an evening. Pro-tip: order the combo.

Had a great night visiting on the Tuesday open night. I enjoyed the live music and the host was fantastic. Highly recommend.

This place has an excellent atmosphere. Some of the best music in London mixing R&B, Jazz & Soul hosting some of the best musicians in London. The place offers different concepts on different nights of the week which is great. They serve food also and their jamaican chicken plate is fire! This place looks exactly as it did when I first dropped in 10 years ago. I really believe that with such great music and with such great concepts the place would benefit so much from improving their interieor, their service skills and their overall vibe. The place has a lot of potential! In my opinion.

I can only comment on the food (take away) as I am yet to experience one of the live music sessions which I am told are great. But, this is an owner who understands, respects and values the surrounding community. Why do I say this? The quality, portions and flavour you get, is remarkable and yet the price demonstrates sincere interest and value in the neighbouring community. They have a lunch time take away dea, so if you have not sampled, I recommend do! You will not regret. I enjoyed chicken curry (a favourite), rice n peas, plantain, salad and coleslaw. I have also tried the grilled fish (a tast fillet).

Me and my mum were searching for food spots open at 11pm & we stumbled across this place. It was a great surprise with the live band & Caribbean food. Great vibe, great food & will deffo come again.

Hands down, one of the best open mics in the city. Tuesday nights are mainly fantastic R&B, but the exceptional band are more than capable of picking up new songs on the spot and working across genres, turning your chords and tempo into a full accompaniment on the spot. You can jam to your tune whilst trying some new verses in front of a caring and supportive crowd. An amazing experience. Pure quality at each stage and on each instrument. Spots fill up quickly and standards are high, so sign up early if you are serious about performing! Good luck!

I have been coming here on a weekly basis for lunch for about 3 years now and have been numerous times for the Tuesday live music nights. Food is pretty decent and because it's cheap I would come back. There are many reviews about bad service, these can mostly be attributed to the owner who I have met a few times and unfortunately a review wouldn't make sense to write without discussing him. He's a complete ******* of a man who I have seen flip out at people on numerous occasions. Although he's never personally gone after me, one time I went he made a friend of mine cry after he shouted at her when she asked an allergy-related question. I could go on, but best not to as it would be impossible to continue without talking personally about his social problems.

I can't adequately describe how special this place is; it has an authenticity and atmosphere to it that other places in London can merely try (and fail, more often than not) to emulate. For anyone who loves Jazz/Funk/Soul music, this place is simply unmissable. I would personally highly recommend the Jazz jam, which occurs every Friday night. The vibes here are immaculate, the staff are all incredibly friendly, and the food is pretty much perfect. I make a pilgrimage here every time I'm in London for the curry goat alone! This is an absolutely essential night out for any Londoner, let alone just Shoreditch. A truly wonderful place that I couldn't be more grateful for! Unfortunately it does attract its fair share of posers, which is somewhat inevitable, but if you get there early and claim a good table, you'll be rewarded with an unforgettable experience. I implore anyone to ignore the petulant 1-star reviews and come check this place out for yourselves - you won't regret it.

I went there for a late night out on Friday with my wife. The security was friendly, the Bar staff were polite, the fruit juices reasonably priced, entry was free, and they had a live band from about 11.30pm to 2am. It wasn't overcrowded, the atmosphere was good, and it's a great location. The disco lighting could be improved to give it a better nightclub feel. The club could do with some redecoration and updated furniture. This place is a gem in what can be an expensive city for a late night out with music and dance. I would definitely go again because all the staff are very welcoming and prices are very reasonable. There were all ages of people from diverse backgrounds. This club is a genuine credit to London nightlife.

My exceptionally talented best friend who is a professional musician was over from France this week and I was trying to find her a cool venue to jam at, with other great musicians, whilst in London. After waiting a short time, one of the two older doormen told us to 'stand to one side', before demanding that we needed to pay £8 and 'IN CASH' before anyone else could enter. This was strange as when researching this venue it clearly stated that entry was FREE. When I questioned why those in front of us had been allowed to enter without charge, the second bouncer came up and stood over us saying, 'I can guarantee that you are not coming in! I am utterly shocked by the the attitude of the management/bouncers at this venue. Not quite sure how they are able to get away with treating people like this?? SHAME ON YOU Troy! You missed out!! When you get a reputation for treating people poorly, you know you are on borrowed time...

Absolutely poor customer service. i called to book a table and the hostile person behind the phone snarled that they do not take bookings. After enquiring if they played music in the evening, i got a stern reply to check Instagram to find answers. I won't be going there, i can only imagine what the service would be like. No, thank you.

Appena si entra, dopo essere stati perquisiti da un buttafuori, si ha l'impressione di aver "sbagliato posto". La sala è piccola ed arredata con un'accozzaglia di oggetti spaiati fra loro. Inoltre, se non sei tu a chiedere, nessuno ti offrirà da bere o da mangiare. Poi, però, ti arriva il loro combo di pollo alla griglia piccante e pecora al curry e capisci che l'apparenza inganna. Il cibo è da 10 e lode! Per non parlare della birra caraibica, servita piacevolmente ghiacciata. Ma il punto forte del locale è la musica. Infatti, ogni sera si esibiscono gruppi jazz (quello che è capitato a noi era di notevole bravura!) in un'atmosfera che, New Orleans spostati proprio. Se vi capita di andare a Londra, dedicate qualche ora a questo posto magico dove non troverete altri turisti. Ne vale assolutamente la pena.

Really poor customer service. I called the number online 07958298607 to enquire about the food and music tonight as I've never been to Troy Bar. Spoke to this guy and asked him what's on this evening. He told me to check Troy Bar official ig page. I advised him I don't have insta and he replied snarkily "well then there's nothing I can do to help you". I called again a few mins later to ask if it's only take-away or dine-in too. He asked me what time I was thinking to come in and I said that I was looking for general information seeing seeing as he's the expert. He replied in frustration, "well I'm not an expert, and as I said check our website". I tried suggesting changing the contact details for troy bar seeing as he wasn't being helpful, but he hung up before I could finish my sentence... What a childish person, shouldn't be running a business. Don't call that number!

Bin coming to Troy bar restaurant for years good food shame about the staff I came for big orders all the time and was asked to recommend him witch I did for parties and stuff he had a full out with somone I recommend over coleslaw when I tried to order my usual of him he had a bad attitude spoke to me like absolute rubbish changed his price on the food and was trying to patronise me I wouldn’t use it any more or recommend it no customer Service at all the

Pathetic and embarrassing situation last Friday when one of the doormen, the guy behind the laptops on the stage, kicked out a blind man for being accompanied by a guide dog. Even though the man was being calm and polite, the bouncer kept shouting very aggressively. Disgusting.

Me and my girlfriend have tried to visit this establishment three times as we are always on lookout for good live music, however, each time we have attempted to visit we have been treated with complete disrespect to the point that we will never go back now. The staff, bar staff, and the bouncers were all rude aggresive, confrontational and disrespectful. Find somewhere else!

I went to Troy Bar recently and enjoyed the night until I noticed my purse missing from my bag. I returned to the venue to speak to staff members about how I can get in contact the following day. Staff weren't much help so I proceeded to look for it myself. I called the venue a couple of days after and the male telephone operator was incredibly hostile and screamed down the phone for most of the conversation.He decided to enlighten me that he gets a lot of these calls all the time and doesn't doesn't believe it was taken inside the venue. He questioned how I knew it was taken inside the venue?! Since when did answering the telephone for enquiries become a burden for staff. He also tried to intimidate me by telling me what I will do as he decided how this will be resolved.. During this time, he raised his voice and asked me why I was shouting? No empathy, no care, no communication skills. To agree with one of the other comments - I cannot support businesses that do not know how to operate and treat customers as though they are worthless! I have decided to leave this incident in the hands of the Police since we could not come to a direct conclusion. As much as I enjoyed the DJs style, I cannot return to this venue for how I was spoken to by the security and the operator on 07919841773.

I don’t usually write reviews but this one required one. The door staff were atrocious, we came for a friends birthday and prior to this the staff on the phone were rude. But we ignored it (first mistake) and still wanted to enjoy our friends birthday, as we got to the door the staff told us we could not bring our £150 cake in. We said can we speak to the manager or bar staff, to see if we can put it behind the bar as we had nowhere else to put it. They stated no and was very rude about it, informing us that we were giving them ‘agg’ (whatever that means). The rudeness was very unnecessary and unwarranted, this establishment need to really be careful about who they employ as after this we decided that these type of people will never get our money. It is hard to support black businesses when they have no etiquette or know theirselves how to run a business. I am highly disappointed as even the time of opening was communicated incorrectly. They should really educate their staff if they wish to strive in this form of business. This is the worst establishment I have EVER been to and will never ever spend my money there.

Llegué a las 12: 20 (el bar de Troy está abierto hasta la 1 am aparentemente) para reunirme con amigos que ya estaban dentro. Antes de que dijera una palabra o intenté entrar, el portero abrió la puerta ligeramente y me gritó: "¿Qué quieres?" Honestamente pensé que estaba bromeando porque no podía entender por qué estaba tan enojado y dije. , tímidamente "uh. mis amigos están dentro y se supone que debo encontrarme con ellos", a lo que él respondió: "¿qué quieres que haga al respecto? ¿crees que me importa?" y, literalmente, LIGÓ la puerta y la cerró. ! Había otras tres personas que ya habían estado adentro y estaban afuera conmigo, fumando, que luego también fueron encerradas afuera, dejando sus bebidas y amigos encerrados dentro y lejos de ellos. Ninguno de nosotros sabía qué hacer, excepto esperar a que alguien nos deje entrar o que nuestros amigos salgan y nos conozcan. Entonces, unos 15 minutos más tarde, todavía estábamos esperando afuera y el mismo portero volvió a asomar la cabeza y gritó a todos nosotros: "Te dije que no puedes entrar y que simplemente estás esperando al otro lado de la puerta? F * Ck off! F * ck off! F * ck off! "Me gustaría enfatizar el hecho de que ni siquiera le pedimos que entrara. No le habíamos dicho nada. No estábamos amenazando o intimidando. ¡Soy una mujer pequeña, suave, educada y de voz suave y estaba siendo tan educada como siempre! Seguimos su consejo y nos "quitamos el dedo" y nunca más volveremos a Troy Bar..

Music was great and it was packed out towards the end of the night. Door staff met us with great hostility and the bar staff seemed to lack training. Not a great beer selection but the food was good and great price. Would go again.

¡He estado en el bar Troy 3/4 veces antes de poder recomendar a cualquiera, especialmente los martes, debido al micrófono abierto! Hacen el mejor pollo jerk en Londres y la porción es enorme solo para 7. Los artistas son increíblemente profesionales y el personal es muy amable y servicial.

Este bar tiene un servicio horrible. El equipo de seguridad es grosero, intimidante para las mujeres jóvenes. Se requiere entrenamiento muy necesario en servicio al cliente. The customer service is horrendous during business hours . The place is unhygenic and the Jerk Chicken wasn't even seasoned ? The place is an embarrassment to carribean cuisine. I didn't even see a carribean in the kitchen.

Primero de todo el abrir las puertas a las 8. 45:00 (hora correcta), pero el espectáculo no empieza hasta las 2 horas de las puertas abiertas. Entonces estaba completamente lleno! No pude ver nada de la actuación porque la gente estaban de pie delante de mí y mi compañero de vista. La gente entrar en mis dedos, ya que era socio y dejar a alguien atrás de mi ponche de pierna porque accidentalmente entramos en sus pies.

Por primera vez en muchos años que me estaba animado por un amigo para volver a micrófonos abiertos, tuve que luego de un tiempo, que afortunadamente dieron un asiento, no tenía vistas de actos en absoluto, cuando intenté mover nadie me dejaron sentarme. Yo estaba en tanto dolor moviendo intentando ver. Tuve que preguntar a la gente en numerosas ocasiones para moverse, así que la gente en los asientos detrás de podía ver. No tenía otra opción que irme, me preguntó si podía tener mi entrada trasera, así que pude regresar otro día y disfrutar de las actuaciones, pero me dieron dijo que pedir alguien tres veces con un rechazo recto, y nos dijeron que estaba allí por horas. Sí, yo estaba allí por un tiempo porque es cuánto tiempo toma para establecer la noche y tener gente en el escenario! Esa no es mi haciendo? Salió de allí en agonía, parece desorganizado y sin atención a las personas en mi situación. En la parte superior de que las bebidas caro y débil con arroz. Pollo no estaba destinado a ser un tirón y fue dulce.

Had a great evening with some incredible acts. Great food... £7 for curry goat, plantain, rice and peas and coleslaw. Then the singer Omar, who was in the audience did a cameo. A fantastic night. Started at 10 and left at 12.30 in interval.

Love the atmosphere and the musicians are on point, however when u charge me for a fake drink u miss the point of being a grassroots venue. Keep it real for the genuine punters and that includes the drinks

We accompanied my sister to the Troy bar. She was performing as the Purple Prince that night along with the Action Men. We found the bar to be comfortable, friendly, quirky and quite pleasant. The music was 60s stuff, but nothing that we knew. It was all from the France and other European places. It sounded like the Beatles or the Monkeys, but all of the singing was in foreign languages. Great tunes! The guy who ran the place was really sweet and took good care of us. Once the dancing got started the place became really entertaining. There were people in period dress (60s) doing period dances and it was really fun to watch. Highly recommend this bar for anyone who wants to just dance and not worry about what anyone else is thinking about you. Cool place.

Had a fantastic night. Hannah is a great host and the atmosphere amazing. The club was packed. Music great as was humour. Loved it.

La música de jazz concierto era increíble, jam session - mejor aún. Me enamoré de el ambiente de este lugar y volveremos la próxima vez que esté en Londres. Es acogedor, natural, sin pretensiones y simplemente increíble. La ranura era innegable y me bailan algunos funky r'n'hasta el bar cerrado, también conocí a algunos chicos simpática. Tenía dudas acerca de ir allí sola, pero no me arrepiento durante un segundo. No tienen dinero en efectivo o tarjeta contactless, así que tuve que comprar 3 cervezas antes de poder pagar con mi tarjeta de crédito, pero no me arrepiento!

This place is amazing! The open mic talent and the food make for a great quite chilled night out. It does get quite packed though.

L'accueil est chaleureux. Les plats sont copieux et bons. Et le mercredi soir, c'est jam session, tout les musiciens sont les bienvenus. Nous avons pu jouer un peu avec d'excellents musiciens locaux, un moment riche en échange. Les prix des bières sont correctes. Nous avons passé une excellente soirée.

Pero. . Pero hay este lugar minúsculo haciendo grandes! Sábado al final de la calle de anónimo Hoxton Old Street no creerá la alegría este lugar llegará! Me encontré con este lugar en una noche de miércoles con algunos compañeros de trabajo, y me sorprendió gratamente encontrar una sesión en acción. Parecía como si este era una especie de noche abierto mic y porque no estaba demasiado ocupado nos las arreglamos para conseguir una bebida y un asiento. Vimos algunos saxofonistas de jazz, guitarra y batería. La iluminación roja le dan un toque de vibraciones de metro. Ambiente relajado y simplemente aprecio bastante para nuevos músicos salir. Si quieres disfrutar de algo diferente sin duda este lugar cuando no quieres ir de fiesta!

Llamé para pedir una troya Bar simple pregunta. De qué sirve comida hasta. Con ser. período de Navidad y el hecho de que algunos bares sólo sirven comida hasta un cierto tiempo en las noches. Sin embargo, me recibieron con hostilidad y actitud. El gerente dijo por teléfono que estaba harto de gente llamando y preguntando a él esta pregunta. Él entonces dijo: has sido antes? Y me dijo de mirar en su página web.

Cerca de nuestro hotel es este Troy Bar, para los amantes de la música jazz. Nos sentamos muy cerca de la banda y disfrutaron de sus freestyle jazz. Los músicos se unieron y se sentía muy relajado. Un bonito lugar para relajarse y disfrutar de la música en vivo y las bebidas.

Great live music in a lovely, cozy bar. Saturday night jazz-fusion band was very energetic and had everyone dancing. The dark and casual atmosphere made for a really easy-going vibe, great for listening to jazz without the usual pretentiousness and fussiness of other similar places. The food was also excellent and well priced.

Went there on a friday night with a group of friends, it was jazz night and the place was packed! the music was nice and the ambiance relaxed. good as a chill spot.

The food is sooo good, and very affordable. The open mic starts by 10pm, so best to arrive eaarly, around 8:30 to get a good seat, enjoy the music and be comfortable before the show starts. Really great experience, I am about to become a regular!

Always try to visit here for a lunch time meal whenever we get down to London. Our son and his work mates go there. Lunch menu is a small variety of caribbean food - Jerk chicken / curried chicken / goat / steamed fish / pork with rice & peas and plantain and coleslaw - 2 years ago it was £5 - 3 years later £5.50. It is always busy and you would never just stumble upon it. It's like some weird cafe/living room - I love it.

I love the food at Troy! I have never been to any of the evening events, but I have seen and heard good things. I visit most during my lunch break when I'm feeling for some good Caribbean food. I strongly think the venue is in desperate need of a refurbish as it's not very welcoming to those that aren't familiar with the restaurant. Besides the negatives, I love their curry mutton and the service is very timely. Highly recommend for great tasty food.

Excellent food. This place is perfect to take out and bring back to your desk or sit in the park with. The food is amazing, you choose from chick, pork or fish and then you get a load of sides.I have been countless time and it's always great. Also has a banging live jazz band at the weekend, cheap drinks and all round great vibes!

Attended Tuesday evening open mike session. First appearances not impressed small venue with old somewhat tatty furniture. Tables and chairs crammed on top of each other with no room to move. Strange set up for ordering food and a little slow to come out but the wait was worth it. Good food (curry goat £7.00) well presented and very flavoursome certainly exceeded my expectations based on first appearances. Drinks average and avoid the on tap presseco it's bad! The talent on the night was absolutely fabulous and the host did a great job engaging the crowd and getting everyone going. Turned out to be a great cheap last minute night out.

Went on Tuesday for Jam session. Great music. A little crowded which is credit to the music, suggest getting there at 9 if you want a seat. Food was simple but quite good though.

Visited Troy bar with my work colleague who's been there loads of times and always raved about how good the food is.We had the curry chicken and rice which came with plantain and salad. A very generous portion of food at a great price and it was cooked and tasted perfect.The venue itself is nice and intimate, it has a quirkiness to it which is very endearing. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. I am definitely returning back here.

I went to Troy Bar on an open mic night and I had a really good night and the drinks were that expensive either.

Troy is one of my favourite places in Shoreditch. I first stumbled across it purely by accident, but I'm so glad I did as I've been back many times since. Thursday night is a reggae night, which is always fun, but any night I've been there, there's been a good vibe. It makes a change from the crowded chain places like All Bar One or the seedy clubs like Mother Bar around the corner. It's cool without being pretentious, not overpriced and just in general a good night. It's not fancy, it feels a bit more like a cross between an eccentric granny's living room and a student party, but it sure is fun.

Was having a fun chat with the staff early on in the night when the car was empty and they were really looking after us. As soon as the owner walked in the atmosphere took a dive and the staff looked almost scared. The drinks are stupidly expensive here compared to other bars nearby and the place lost its shine for me. I always like to see good staff being looked after and hate the idea I'm being ripped off.

This place really is a wee gem.Lovely staff, clean toilets, great relaxed vibe and amazing music. The food is hearty & filling & obviously made with love. The décor is funky without being pretentious.I advice visiting soon before the hipsters discover it!

トロイバーはジャズのお店として有名です。毎週火曜日に飛び込みでステージで歌えるフリーステージをやっています。皆さん、驚く程上手です。時々レゲーナイトもあります。このお店で有名なのはジャークチキン！現在は確か６ポンドくらいだと思いますが、チキン、プランタン、レッドビーンスライスにサラダがついて山盛です。他にゴートカレー、チキンカレー、魚のグリルもありますが、全ておいしい！！音楽に、お酒に、ご飯を食べに行くだけでも満足な店です。

Forget the breakfast club this place beats it hands down, andwithout the hipsters in the que. friendly staff and fresh food, a simple hangover cure.

Low key party place. Saw some good gigs here. Nice crowd too. Drinks were inexpensive and very close to lots of other great places in Shoreditch.
