Silly expensive prices for beer…

Can’t believe I hadn’t been to this pub before! My new favourite! Love the decor, music, general vibe, great selection of wines and beers and delicious food. The service is really excellent! All waiters are lovely, attentive and accommodating. My only criticism is that the beef wellington was a bit over… given how long it takes I couldn’t be bothered to send it back and just hope next time it is better because I will definitely be ordering it again :)

Been here a couple times. Wanted to make sure, before posting a negative review. But the food here is pretty poor. Had a couple snacks first time I came during the week. Watery sauce and no flavour. Guinness was also bad. Then came for a roast, which was equally lacking in flavour, care or taste.

We went to eat the Sunday Roast, we tried two of them and they were very good. High price for what we ate but more or less like the rest of the restaurants in the area. Something that seemed curious to us is that as soon as you order you have to pay the bill before eating. We didn't have a reservation so we had to eat outside and that made our experience not entirely good, it was raining and quite windy. They have large awnings so you don't get wet but it was very windy.

I visited the Hemingway for a roast dinner today after wanting to try this pub for a few years. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed with the experience. The roast dinner was sub par. It was served with only two, very poor tasting roast potatoes. Plus one piece of broccoli. The gravy serving was minimal and flavour was non existent. I asked the waitress where the remainder of the meal was and she agreed that it looked bare. When she returned she had the card machine to say that I could pay for additional food if I felt necessary, to which I politely declined. Overall it was a disappointing experience, I will not be returning anytime soon.

The pepper sauce with the dry age steak was awesome. The chips was also good! 👍🏼

I love the food and music here! The live music bands are amazing and add so much to the relaxing atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, with great vibes and cozy outdoor seating. Definitely a place worth visiting for a chill experience.

Went for a Sunday roast in October 2024, with a booking. Overall, a pretty good experience. We ordered the beef Wellington, and we were very pleased with it. The beef was perfectly cooked and quite flavorful, and the pastry had maintained its texture. Vegetables served alongside retained their color and texture; they were not overly boiled, as is sometimes the case. Chips were as you'd want--crispy on the outside, pillowy on the inside, and hot. Staff were pleasant enough. It was a very busy Sunday and the maitre'd was working hard. He made clear that the 90 minutes for which we'd booked our table was up. We cleared out, although it was sort of a bummer when the Wellington takes 45 minutes to prepare. Our waitress did a nice job keeping water refilled. Atmosphere was fun but extraordinarily loud -- definitely not the place to go for quiet conversation with a friend. But a fun scene nevertheless. Wouldn't go running here as a special London experience, but it fit the bill for a classic pub roast. I'd return for that purpose.

Came in for a Wednesday afternoon lunch, it was marvellous. Nice atmosphere, lovely staff and great food! Had hake and chicken burger! Very very good!!))

we really enjoyed jazz on Thursday at the Hemingway . Beef Wellington for 2 , with a range of vegetables , fries and washed down with. a bottle of Pinot.

Waited for 10 mins at the till for a beer and food because apparently the girl is new and doesn’t know how the machine work. When there are colleagues around her and offered no help. Then a manager came and shouted and refused to take my order because it was busy and they only doing table service . Very bad service , the food could be good but not good enough

I had an incredibly disappointing experience at this pub. I spent 10 minutes trying to place an order, but the new staff seemed completely unfamiliar with the payment machine and had no support from more experienced staff to assist them. After finally getting some attention, another staff member came over and canceled our food order, claiming we didn’t have a table or reservation. To make matters worse, we were forced to pay for the drinks because they had already been poured. Maybe this place would be better when it’s less busy, but this was by far the worst experience I’ve ever had in a pub.

Really lovely place with some nice outdoor seating. Had the and chips and it was amazing, couldn’t recommend it more. The staff were so kind and attentive. Will definitely be returning here again!

I love this place! The food is fantastic, both meat and veggie dishes. The staff is really welcoming and warm. I have taken many friends here and it is always a success! Also my dog loves it.

It's probably one of the best pubs in east London and their beef Wellington is to be had. It can be quite loud inside though.

A fantastic, 5-star pub, that serves great food, a tasty range of drinks and at decent prices for London. All types of people are welcome (please nice people only). Plus, the staff are THE ABSOLUTE BEST!! Happy to have a natter and always a laugh. The only downside is the new till system which slows the flow of service down a bit as it makes the staff’s lives much more complicated. A couple months back they could serve you with just a few taps on their screen and now it can take them a few minutes to put through a simple order. Definitely not putting it on the staff’s in anyway as they’re all brilliant. Highly recommend management switches it back to the old system. I can’t recommend The Hemingway enough, superb on any day of the week!!

The best roast in town, we had a perfect scotch eggs. The Sunday roast were perfection, love everything. And the staff was amazing. Highly recommend.

Great place for a roast, staff were nice, there is an unhinged yetty taxidermy thing, but food more than makes up for it.

We have not been to the Hemingway for many years and know it is not under the same management but being in the area were pleased to return. My husband was looking forward to the roast lamb and was so very disappointed. Not only was the lamb tasteless, but it was not sliced and more like lumps of tough inedible meat. I had fish and chips which was acceptable.

This is an ok pub. The Sunday roast I enjoyed. Burger was ok.

Excellent bar and restaurant, we went for the Beef Wellington, and even though the kitchen was about to close, they prepared it anyway, it was excellent. The service is very friendly, fast, attentive. Also on the way back we saw a fox.

We booked for around 20 people plus, everyone that worked there were really nice! Willing to provide excellent service throughout the night.

Impressed with my first visit here last Monday. A really great burger with good beer and nice ambiance.

Amei o lugar, a comida; não reservei e encontrei lugar; nos deixaram fuçar lá por horas, assim como td mundo no bar ficou um tempão, sem stress. Garçonetes super simpáticas; comida deliciosa ( fui para um sunday roast) A música era ótima. Vou voltar com certeza!

We come here for drinks and love the sofa by the window. The live music is a bit loud but not for too long. Very friendly staff.

Good pub with yummy food and a pool table!

Not as good as it was when Kevin ran it. All a bit haphazard and my peas were cold but, still worth the trip for Sunday lunch and oh bigger plates please my food kept falling off the plate

One of the best veggie burgers I've had - really tasty! The waiting staff were polite and pleasant. My only complaint is that it was quite chilly inside when I visited in January, I wasn't very comfortable.

Chose this place for a birthday celebration based partly on the fact that it would let my needy dog dine with us! We were able to park outside (restricted only before lunch) All of the food was good; the Beef wellington and the Scotch egg especially. Portions were large. The staff were all lovely and really helpful Only slightly marked down because of the noisy group next to us although we were eventually able to move to a quieter spot.

Came here for Saturday lunch based on the reviews. Ordered food and starters and mains came out all at the same time, apparently we should have specified we wanted the starters first... Go figure! Food was average, chewy calamari, very fishy fish so clearly not fresh, average burger and then covered in ash from the fire which went mental at one point. Not worth the trip, will try elsewhere if we come back to the area again.

We came to eat à good Beef Wellington and we are not disapointed at all! The waitress was vert friendly and the food was perfectly cooked! I recommand this place.

Really fancied a beef wellington yesterday and stubled across The Hemingway. Food overall was pretty good. Beef Wellington was cut into 2 big chunks rather than sliced up for presentation. Beef was of good quality and pastry was nice. Sides that come with it are enough, especially if you have starters like we did. Didn't need the mac and cheese but always a nice addition. Good pub lunch.

The Sunday Roast was amazing and great value for money. Particularly the meats were high quality. Such a nice London pub that could be improved by the service. I tried to make a reservation for 1:00 pm but was offered 12:00 instead which is no big deal. Although I really don’t know why the staff have to say “We need the table back by 1:30” , it’s very annoying and an unprofessional and unwelcoming attitude in the hospitality business. Particularly as the next “reservation” according to the sign was for 3:00 pm and not for 1:30 anyway. At the end of the meal we were well fed and couldn’t manage a dessert which I think would probably be pretty good considering the high standard of the mains. We asked for Irish coffee and were told that the pub doesn’t do hot drinks? A pub not doing hot drinks? All in all the service wasn’t great but the food was amazing.

£40 for a Christmas roast ‘with all the trimmings’ - proper mugged off mate. Told by the manager on the phone to rush down as their kitchen was about to close, thought £40 sounded a lot for a main but as it was Christmas decided to treat ourselves. A drink and side (we chose olives) were included. Food came and we were shocked, the roast was severely lacking and had drifted over to the side of the plate. After much deliberation and thinking the trimmings were maybe going to arrive later as over half the plate was empty, we started to eat - the food was ok but nothing to write home about. Nothing else arrived and as the kitchen was closing we conceded that we’d been fobbed off. It was Christmas and we were hungry, and with no other options to find food we (mostly) finished our plates. Left feeling gutted as £40 for either dish was no where near price appropriate and so told the waiter our disappointment, who was really nice about it and said to speak with the manager. Shouldn’t have bothered because all we were hit with were excuses and gaslighting, saying we lied about when we called (it was already 30mins after he said they’d be closed, but they were still taking last orders for food). I suggested a compromise he said ‘are you really doing this on Christmas day?’; yes we are mate because it happens once a year and we’ve just wasted £40 of our hard earned cash on scraps. It’s sad that we no longer want to come back to our local pub.

Relaxed, cosy atmosphere, great staff - excellent lunch.

The Christmas dinner was superb! The service & the staff are just great! Friendly local pub with good food, frequented and loved by locals.

*Update 13/12/23 - They have a local craft pale on draft which is nice and hoppy. The Beef Wellington was fantastic as it was last time and the service and staff was friendly and welcoming.* Original post (December 2021) - I'll get my one tiny negative out the way - please get better craft and cask beer on? You have some amazing breweries nearby (Old Street & Howling Hops to name 2) please please get some proper craft or cask ales - not just Doom Bar (owned by Molson Coors) and Beavertown (Owned by Heineken) these aren't craft. Anyway, aside from that minor detail this place is fantastic! Friendly staff, talkative and relaxed but very efficient and professional. The Beef Wellington was absolutely amazing, me and my mate ordered one each - they are meant for 2 people however we both hadn't eaten all day in anticipation of this meal and we both cleared our plates. The fillet of beef was tender and served medium-rare, it was seasoned very well and as Ramsay would say, it was 'beautiful'. The beef basically melted in your mouth. The duxelle was free of water and the deep earthy taste from the mushrooms was top notch. The puff party was cooked well being light and crispy. This was served with a side of beans, stem brocoli and cabbage all again, well seasoned and cooked just right with only a slight crunch. Lovely. This came with a gravy boat. A further side of triple cooked hand made chips was also served, these were also lovely and fluffy with a crunchy skin. We shared a bottle of red with this and it paired with the meal perfectly In Central London you'd pay over £70 just for the Wellington alone. This pub, being quiet and sofisticated yet laid back with some awesome music (most of which I noted featured in the The Inbetweeners as a coincidence, which was a fun twist) meant for me we had good value for money too, considering the rising costs of ingredients such as the fillet. Would certainly return for another Beef Wellington and a bottle. Hats off to the chef and the barman for a top afternoon!

Shambles of a place. Booked a table for 14 and not only did they seat us nearly an hour late, they then tried to squeeze us on a table for 10 by the toilet. Food was ok but ridiculously over priced. Staff were rude. If you can't accommodate large groups then don't accept bookings for large groups. I've genuinely never been more disappointed by a venue. An utter joke.

Great place to eat with great food.

Was in on Thursday night and had brilliant service for a guy behind the bar who wouldn’t let me buy him a drink, so thought would post a review instead. He helped us out a couple of times with wine which was corked and provided really personable service. I think his name was Adam but might be wrong (tall guy with long hair). Great barman and give that man a bonus! Cheers

I visited this pub for the first time on Sunday, it was really busy (which is usually a good sign!). We had almost made our minds up to find a pub in the local area but Jess who works there was super friendly and helpful and managed to sort us a table. She was remarkably calm and her customer service was great even with the place being rammed, and she managed to check on us throughout our meal to ensure everything was great- which it was. Thank you Jess!

Disappointing. Staff were enthusiastic and nice, place needs re-decorating, food (Sunday lunch) was moderate. Beef was tough, some vegetables (broccoli) barely cooked, Lamb very fatty. Generally not up to scratch. Better Sunday roasts available all over the place. Nice atmosphere and would go back if I thought the food was good (people we were with said they had been one evening and beef wellington was spot on, so we had high hopes.

Booked a Sunday meal at 3 pm finally received meal after being sent to another area to wait for table at 515 pm service was awful no cutlery or sauces at time of meals being presented so busy I don’t think they cared about our wait despite being prompted numerous times would not recommend to anyone food was just average meat was ok 2 hard potatoes and hard veg shame really ruined our family day

Very underwhelming roast. Ordered 5 of the roast ‘Scottish beef fillet’ for the family but the meat we received was overcooked and a cheap cut of meat. I know this place can do better - please do better with your roast beef.

Very unhygienic - when serving our drinks tor barman picked up lumps of ice with his hands (no gloves!), and again with the lemon slices. Also, the cutlery was being wiped on a dirty tea towel before being given to customers. The food was ok (but greasy chips) - generally not a particularly good experience and we won't be going back again.

Visited the Hemingway for their Sunday roast the other day. Food was good, the outdoor eating areas were cute, but the service really tied everything together for me. Exceptional!

Really poor. Waited 20 minutes for a menu and waitress didn’t come back. Other bars are much better so this isn’t a ‘hidden gem’ that’s at the back

Great casual gastropub - recommend the scotch egg and beef wellington (comes nicely with chips, gravy and bacon-topped veg). Decent beer selection, great service at bar and table, plus nicely close to Victoria Park. Cool London maps in the bathroom too!

Such an amazing place I went to have a wellington beef, and oh boy... That was amazing. Perfect medium rare, crispy dow, served with vegetables and chips. Just perfection. Take it with cabernet savignion. But, in addition to amazing beef it is happened that on Friday evening they have an incredible live jazz. Highly recommended!

Food and staff Amazing, try the scotch eggs and the Wellington stik!

On vacation from NYC and decided to try beef Wellington and scotch egg for the first time but didn’t want the hefty price. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the scotch egg was. The beef Wellington was delicious. The jus was incredible. We also had the sticky toffee pudding and it was divine! I must admit that I came with low expectations for the British food but wow! This was soooo good! I am truly humbled. Highly recommend!

Can't complain about the food but the service was the worst I have ever had. It was so strange. The waiter was very aggressive with me and when one of my party asked if there was an issue he just stopped and stared him out. I have no idea what was going on with him but would not recommend the experience. We left as soon as we had eaten which is a shame as the food was good.

Top-notch restaurant with great atmosphere! The wait staff are AMAZING, there is a lovely bar, and the food is out of this world! My nephew and I shared the Beef Wellington for two, and it was prepared perfectly, accompanied by the tastiest haricot verts! I can't wait to return to England just to go to The Hemingway again!!

This was probably the best restaurant we went to while visiting London. Even though it is a little outside the main city areas, it was so cute, quaint, and authentic. The service was absolutely amazing and the wellingtons were the best!!

The Hemingway pub è vicino al Victoria Park, perfetto per gustare un sunday roast dopo una passeggiata domenicale nel parco, peraltro ricco di spazi attrezzati. Il locale ha spazi all'esterno e all'interno e, inoltre, un cortile interno che in caso di pioggia può essere chiuso. Abbiamo ordinato un sunday roast a testa, assaggiando così quello di pollo, manzo, maiale (una specie di pancetta magra), agnello (credo coscia). L'arrosto è accompagnato da patate, fagiolini, broccoli e da una specie di croissant. Il tutto accompagnato da birra e "tap water" (acqua del rubinetto). Accompagnato da salse (mostarda, rafano, menta) e dal "gravy". Abbiamo concluso il pranzo con due dolci, una sorta di apple pie e un toffie, entrambi con gelato. Poco più di 30 euro a testa. Nel complesso, quindi, decisamente soddisfatti.

Visited this fab pub this Sunday evening and they served us an amazing roast dinner, amongst other dishes until 9pm!! Which is literally ‘winner winner chicken dinner’ lovely staff, atmosphere and lovely people all round.and super dog friendly , I will be back next time I’m in london ❤️❤️

The food is good and it’s got a nice outside area, but beers are expensive and the mark up on half pints is insane!

We came on a sunny Sunday and it was quite busy. Great atmosphere and good service given how busy it was. We had the cheese board which was lovely !

Stay away. The food use to be fantastic here but has deteriorated in quality over the last three years. We discreetly mentioned the meat was chewy and were bullied by the extremely aggressive Manager. Will not be going back.

This is a lovely pub indeed and the beef roast is great. However their customer service is not quite where it should be. For the prices of the food and drinks they are positioning themselves quite high but the service level does not reflect that.
