I'd booked a table for six on a Saturday lunchtime and we had to have lunch finished in an hour, which I mentioned when booking. I was a little worried, having read reviews saying that service can be slow. The service was very efficient and friendly. We enjoyed the food , which tasted really fresh and homemade. The mezze were as good as in Istanbul!

four of us went on Friday night for some dinner and to catch up. The ambience and service was lovely but sadly the veggie curry - which they charged £12 for - was awful. Like something you'd put together as a student, complete with packet rice and shop-bought naan. Worst of all was a very stody, stale and overly harshly spiced dahl, which none of the three of us touched. Really disappointing - I'd be ashamed to serve it to friends at home. we did receive some free desserts when we complained about the curry to our waiter, which was appreciated. But I'd much rather not have forked out £24 in the first place for such poor food.

Walking around Hackney Wick trying to find a restaurant was the most frustrating thing i have ever experienced. Then i stumble across this little place down the end of a small street. Not thinking the outside looked particularly enticing I hesitated but my stomach led me in ... and thank god it did. This place is relaxed/interesting/comfortable/warming all the nice describing words you could ever think of. The staff were very nice straight away asking if we want some tap water before we had even sat down. Thank god they removed that awkwardness of me asking for it and feeling cheap. Long story short ..... the food was incredible. I had the rare steak. it was unbelievable. I have eaten in many steakhouses across London and this was up with the best. My other half ordered a Chicken and Leek pie with side of Broccoli. All i can say on that is thank god she got full up because i was eyeing up her food as soon as i scoffed mine down. The only down side is that the restaurant is a little bit pricey but considering they must of been the only restaurant open in Hackney that night they could have charged what the hell they wanted. I love the restaurant. I will be back.

This is my third visit to the Pearl since moving to the area a few months ago. On each occasion the service has been friendly and attentive, and while the food may take a while at busy times, its no longer than any number of other places. The best thing about the Pearl is how the vibe changes during the day - great café for lunch or brunch, but in the evening it comes in to it's own as a nice little bistro. Food is not cheap, but is good (freshly made from scratch, and local ingredients) and worth the money - also different from the standard pizza menu fare which most other local venues seem to serve. I know others have given it mixed reviews, but I really would recommend giving it a try - especially on an evening when the weather is good enough to sit outside!

I visited The Hackney Pearl a few months ago. Two friends and I were in the area to celebrate a birthday, and needed to eat beforehand. As the immediate area is a barren, graffiti-covered wasteland of warehouses and wide car parks, The Hackney Pearl was the only restaurant we could find. It looked decent, we thought, if a little pretentious and forced into scruffiness by an overpaid interior designer. We soon discovered that the prices were absolutely sky-high, despite the small portions and mediocrity of the food. We ordered charcuterie, which left little to be desired, as well as holes in our wallets. The service was bizarre: he made several errors, was very slow, and then was confused that we hadn't included the 'optional' service charge when paying the bill. He came back to our table and asked why we hadn't, tapping the bill. We felt pressured, then, into getting our wallets back out and giving it to him, despite our legitimate grounds not to. I shall not return.

My friend suggested eating at the hackney pearl as he had been there before and really enjoyed it. However on this occasion our meal wasn't that great. The bruschetta was very hard and crunchy and we shared the only vegetarain main of artichokes which was inedible as they were so hard and I always eat everything when I go out. i thought it was a raw food meal it was so hard and cold. The guy serving us was so lovely and we mentioned it to him at the time and he gave us some money off (£5) but the meal was quite expensive (£70 inc wine) and we were still feeling hungry afterwards. The place itself is cool and I've been going out in hackney wick for a long time but i don't think I'll be returning to the hackney pearl (would go back for drinks but not food) which is sad as we realy wanted to have a good meal. :-(

We went to the Hackney Pearl yesterday (granted: on an incredibly busy day- as the Hackney half had just finished). The initial waitress was polite & friendly and helped us move a table outside. However, we waited 25 minutes at the bar to order a drink, and it was another 15 minutes before they arrived at our table. When I asked the initial waitress, she said she was off duty, apologised & said to ask the General Manager. When I finally got to the General Manager after another 5/10 minute wait- he just abruptly said "yeah they're coming. NEXT"The food was far too expensive for what it was. I had the quinoa salad for £10, and I must say I could do better at home myself. Bland & tasteless was the common theme around the table. Also we were treated as if we should be grateful that they gave us any service whatsoever. Requests for ketchup & such were greeted with huffs & puffsAnd to top it all off- a bill of £30 per person for a less than average lunch & a few glasses of wineWILL NOT BE BACK!

The menu prices looked rather steep but that's not so bad if the food is up to it.I opted for the BLT roll as it was the only thing that I fancied on the menu. It was the most dull BLT I've ever had! (£5). One piece of bacon, one slice of tomato in a very basic supermarket type bap. The coffee was ok but could have been hotter. My companion felt that their soup bowl was rather lacking in soup, being about half full. All in all expensive for below average food. It was really busy after the Hackney half marathon so I would go back if it were less hectic, but on this occassion the service was not up to the numbers there, and the food was OK but really not at all good value - £11.50 for a small portion of bubble & squeak and a couple of strips of streaky bacon + egg is a shocker. The charcouterie plate was overpriced and poor as well. Both might be put down to the crowds on the day I suppose, but if it's like that normally I'd avoid at all costs.

Having been to the Hackney Pearl for food previously I was expecting the usual good food but we were really disappointed with the standard of our meal especially the main courses. We ordered the lamb leg kebab and risotto, the kebab was very basic with poor quality pieces of meet, large amounts of onion with stodgy rice to accompany it and a tomato sauce which looked like it had come straight out of a tin, to be honest it felt like a student dinner not a £16 main course. It was really poor and for value for money compares very badly to restaurants such as Mission and 10 Greek Street where a main course/large plate mighty be this price but is of far higher quality. The risotto was ok but good. Both dishes lacked the refinement, care and quality of ingredients which I had expected. We didn't stay for desert given the quality of our main courses. Including starter, the mains and 3 drinks our bill was £59, which feels like a lot for a poor meal.

The environment is very nice and the food tasty. The reasons that I scored it only 4 out of 5 are:A) it is quite expensive (4 sides, main, tea for 2 cost around £26 including service).B) there are no vegan dishes (also without garlic and onions), so I ended up having olives, rocket salad, roasted potatoes and focaccia bread.

We went here for a late lunch based on a good review in the Guardian. The decor is typically shabby chic hipster cafe.I was slightly shocked, but also charmed, by the waiter cleaning the crumbs off the table with his hands. I ordered the smoked mackeral celeriac remoulade small plate (£8.00), my partner the salami, cream cheese and mustard sandwich (£5.00) and two soft drinks. The mackeral small plate was indeed exceedingly small - two thin measly pieces of toast (about 4 x 8 cm each) and no butter. I had expected some sort of mackerel mousse but it came in horizontal chunks with the spine, all the bones and the skin attached. Mackerel is a notoriously bony fish and, as well as deboning first, I had to check through each mouthful I ate for bones - a rather stressful experience. The mackerel and celeriac themselves were perfectly pleasant. The bap used for the salami sandwich was mass-produced and tasteless - not what one would expect in a cafe with artisan ambitions. The flavour combinations did not, in my partner's opinion, work particularly well together. The food came quickly and the staff were very nice.I was happy to leave a tip. However when I went to pay at the till I was presented with a discretionary service charge of 10% and the change for an amount which included the "discretionary" service charge - just 20p short of £20.There was little opportunity in this face-face interaction to decide not to pay the "discretionary" service charge without entering into a discussion about the underwhelming food - which I didn't want to engage in.I don't think non discretionary "discretionary" service charges added automatically to the bill are ever appropriate but certainly not in a cafe.

We came here for brunch one Sunday recently, and it was distinctly under-whelming. The mistmatched furniture may be 'cool' but it is also uncomfortable with chairs at the wrong height for the (wobbly) table. Our table was near a door (not the main door, but one the staff were using) and it was cold. Even though we arrived at about 10.15, the menu was not ready, and we had to wait a while to order (the advertised opening time is 10am). When it did come, the brunch menu was shorter than I would have liked, but we had scrambled eggs and a coffee each which was fine - but paying £23 for all this did rankle. I won't be back unfortunately, as we live quite locally and would have liked a neighbourhood place to go to.

But we ordered six portions of chips, which were brought to the table in bowls breakfast cereal size, which seemed very small for £4.00 until we discovered this was actually two portions! Apart from not appreciating the assumption that we would share our chips from one bowl, they were thin wedges with skin left on and very oily. Also that made a bowl of about 10 of these potato slivers £8.00! We managed to turn back two portions but in spite of complaints were left paying £16.00 for two small bowls. Unbelievable. This "rough and ready" joint is the most overpriced restaurant I've visited for the quality of the food received. The food is good - nothing special. Dinner is ~£20 for a main/side with some nice albeit not inexpensive cocktails on the menu. Dinner for 2, with starters OR desserts, and wine would run about £70-80.I can't count the number of places in London you can get similar quality or better fare, cheaper. It's as if the owner thinks it is something special to "simply prepare" the "locally supplied" produce. Frankly I don't care if the olive was bought in Hackney or Hounslow, it's an olive probably grown in Morocco for goodness sake.Summary: Coffee and Cocktails - good. Food - simple fare at twice the price.Setting - rough and ready hipster vibe does not have to equal unclean

The restaurant praises itself by showing its different suppliers of high quality food & drink on the menu: so called honest foods, but as a restaurant you will still need a high quality chef to be able prepare these foods... Unfortunately, there was none of such great chefs here as the food was plain and simple. In fact even the "simple rare steak" was not rare, but very overcooked (like a bicycle tire-tough). So bottom-line is that should you head to Hackney Pearl, go for the great cocktails, the atmosphere and dedicated staff. But get something to eat at home first...;-)

The reason I gave it two stars is because the place is vegetarian friendly and the food is home-made, simply and not bad at all. My choice was the lentil stew –pretty much just cooked lentils with some simply cooked carrots. Nothing wrong with that at all! The meal was very healthy and so not complicated. All good…. And then the bill comes around….For the range of prices on the menu I would expect better service and quality of food! Ok. I get it! East London is in a world of its own. I like the simply décor where it is ok for the paint to be peeling of the walls. The scruffy East End cool attracting hipsters and makes it East! I get that and I like it! But cool and edgy does not necessarily has to go with dirty floors covered with dust accompanied by the waiter who didn’t wash his trousers since last Christmas!!!! That is not cool any longer, but it is just not hygienic. The concept of the place does not reflect their outrages prices. My cooked lentils was listed as 13,50; the “mezze plater” that consisted of humous and Focaccia bred with a handful of green beans on site – 8,50, I can’t be sure about the price of the pork dish… but all together - we had to spend for this simply meal around 65 pounds! As an example – the night before I had an amazing feast at on of the Thai Restaurants in Chelsea… x2 for 75pounds…Am I missing something? In my view it is ridiculously overpriced place that is run without any attention to details, as if that's a great thing.I suggest you don't waste your hard-earned money on overpriced food when there is soooo much other choice around.

Ok. East London is in a world of its own. I like the simply décor where it is ok for the paint to be peeling of the walls attracting hipsters. But cool does not necessarily has to go with dirty floors covered with dust! The concept of the place does not reflect their outrages prices. My lentil was listed 13,50; total 65 pounds! In my view it is ridiculously overpriced place that is run without any attention to details, as if that's a great thing. There are better places around.

Amongst the warehouses, skate parks and graffiti of Hackney Wick lies this little tucked away sun trap and cosy place to while away weekend hours. Great, flavoursome food combos and house made desserts to boot.

The setting is great - it looks like a converted council building and they've done a great job of making it feel fresh again. It's a little small but often the best places are. The staff were incredible friendly and welcoming and we got out table, menus and orders taken nice and quickly. The wine was REALLY good! (so much so we had to get another carafe). Unfortunately the mezze starter we ordered came at the same time as out steaks - it must have been forgotten. What made up for this was a well-seasoned, extremely tasty steak, some perfectly cooked jersey potatoes and a home-made humous that full of flavour with a perfect lemony tang. For the setting, I think the price is too high - but I have paid more for steak and been disappointed so...With a little work on their timings, I'd highly recommend this place as a treat dinner - it's full of local character and if you're anywhere near the Olympic park you should check it out.

Took some friends and family here for dinner. It's definitely over priced for dinner and you don't get much food for what you pay. However the coffee and cakes are lovely so worth stopping over to revive, plus it's nice a calm in that piece of the wick

This is certainly tucked away where you wouldn't find it if you weren't specifically looking for it. It's a little tiny place with a few tables inside and a few outside in Hackney Wick. It looks like it should be a real cool little trendy place where the locals hang out. You can get breakfast, lunch and dinner here. They serve alcoholic drink too. I've had a couple light lunches here and althiough the idea and setting is a good one, it just suffers a little from being just a touch too expensive for what it is and the service is a bit slow too when you need a quick lunch. The waiter / waitress takes your order reasonably quickly, but even a simple sandwich seems to take ages to comes out of the kitchen. I would score the cafe/bistro higher if it wasn't for the prices and the slowness.

Booked a table at the Hackney Pearl for my son's birthday. He'd always wanted to go so I said I'd treat him. Told people so we all knew where to meet. Just before I got there I picked up a voicemail from the Hackney Pearl saying they were closed that evening. Bit of a disaster really. Ended up in the Pembury Tavern which was quite pleasant and interesting food. I'd go there again!

There aren't really that many places left in London that could be called 'hidden away'. And this place is far from empty. But there's something about being in the still undiscovered-for-many area of Hackney Wick, down a quiet street, watching the world go by.Everytime I've been there I've been served quickly and warmly. I had the English Pea, Preserved Lemon, Orzo and Mint Relish - a very tasty vege option, even for a non-vege like me.Overall: A little pricey but excellent food, friendly and unpretentious.

The Hackney Pearl has a great selection of cocktails which are on a two for one happy offer deal from 5pm to 7pm (same cocktails only). The three course set menu for £18 was delicious and a good amount of food. There is a £2 surcharge on the steak but it was a very good steak which they only cook rare which is for the best. The service was great.

Greeted by "London's most disappointing £5 sandwich". A ham bap with mustard. For that price I would a least expect better bread than a cheap processed bun, probably sourced from the off license round the corner. Accompanied by a small slice of supermarket packaged ham.Judging by the use of their vocabulary on the menu you could tell it was alittle try hard. If only they put that much effort into the actual food instead of thinking what would make carrots sound better to hipsters? "heritage" - "heritage carrots"?

The staff at the Pearl is lovely, great service with a smile. The clientele is very Hackney hipster but the cafe is not at all pretentious, unlike similar places in Dalston and Shoreditch. There's no pretension when the staff is as nice as this and the food and drink are good.We had brunch there last week - it's expensive, yes, but good quality ingredients and great coffee. Flat white is reccommended and the french toast with maple syrup and streaky bacon is delicious. There is an outside seating area too.The Pearl is only 2 minutes walk from Hackney Wick station. I agree with one of the reviewers below - it's worth leaving the commerical centre of Stratford and coming one stop on the train to the Wick. The Crate Brewery/pizza place is just nearby too, so you have a far better eating/drinking experience than in the chain eateries at Westfield shopping centre.

The Pearl is a mixed bag - you'll either love or hate the old skool/new age ambience, I love it but my companion shrugged and said Peckham does it better. The menu change took away some old favourites and the replacements aren't all welcome but the risotto is superb. Service a bit hit and miss but it's reasonably good value and until the Wick gets a bit more variety it's a welcome local watering hole.

This place is the antidote to all the sterile and commercial chain restaurants at Westfields. Just one stop on the overground train to Hackney Wick and literally 2 mins walk. It will suit people who prefer their restaurants to focus on the plate of food not the surroundings. Three of us visited and all had the £18 3-course special. Everything was exceptionally good, great ingredients, well cooked. Good selection of cocktails and craft beers. The place has a very relaxed, easy going vibe. A perfect place to hang out over dinner. I'd recommend the 10 minutes detour from Westfields

If you're a local to the Hackney Wick area, it's a must try. Nice, charming staff serving up home-made comfort food. Nothing pretentious about this spot. Just honest, good food. The coffee is also delicious! I typically go here for the week night special. 2 courses for £15! Can't beat that price. There's also a 2-for-1 cocktail special from 5-7pm if you're ever keen for an early din and drinks.Last time I was here I tried a vodka Martini with pickle juice. It was so yummy! A different take on the typical olive Martini, but just as good!My boyfriend I come here when we don't feel like cooking at home and we're not interested in getting dressed up for a white table cloth service meal. It's the perfect in between :)

I ate at the hackney pearl late last year, the meat I was served was described as skirt but was inedible, I finished off the measly veg serving and asked for the bill, the waitress asked if everything was satisfactory, I explained but said I just wanted to go, a manager arrived and went onto deliver a patronising diatribe about skirt! And offered me an ice cream!! The whole experience as pretentious and the food awful, the waitress was charming.

One of my favourite places to eat. Nestled away in Hackney Wick, you have to make an effort to get there if you're not a local but, boy, is it worth it. The food is always creative and unusual, with fresh ingredients and wonderful combinations and the decor and atmosphere is relaxed and easy. You often see people with their laptops working away and it's also a great places for informal meetings. Last time I was there, I had a delicious celeriac and roasted hazelnut soup and a terrine of rabbit and pork with armagnac soaked prunes. It certainly hit the spot. Sunday roasts are utterly divine. Well worth a visit and you'll keep coming back. Trust me.

Having been to the Hackney Pearl for coffee before we were looking forward to eating dinner there. In retrospect we should have gone elsewhere as the service and food weren't up to scratch! Booking on the website via toptable was a waste of time as the staff hadn't bothered to reserve our table, which left us wondering if the vibe is laidback why offer the option to reserve! Staff are friendly enough but a bit slow. As for the food it was overpriced and not great. All in all a nice place for coffee/brunch but disappointing for dinner.

Hackney Pearl is an excellent restaurant and even though it's in the hipster heartland it's not even slightly pretentious, even with a clientele that's 99% Mac Book Air. The ingredients are clearly high quality, the chefs know what they're doing and the waiters are friendly and efficient. My only suggestion is there should be a vegetarian main course that isn't a salad. The house wine is excellent value and quality and all in all, we love it here. By far and away THE best place for food, drinks or coffee in the entire Hackney Wick. Nice one.
