Four of us went there for lunch and their made to order fresh salad rolls. Whilst waiting in the queue we noticed that the hygiene of the staff making the rolls were using their bare hands making the rolls after handling money from previous customers. Not even washing them or using gloves, we promptly left and won't be returning.

Great selection of cakes /savoury’s and sandwiches , generous in size. All delicious very clean inside . Only reason not five stars was one member of staff very abrupt and no customer service skills, got a bit touchy when we pointed out we had one extra sandwich we didn’t ask for. The kids said she reminded them of Mrs Trunchbowl from Matilda, had to agree really. Wouldn’t stop us from going back , but don’t dare ask for any extra ketchup.

I love a traditional bakery and Trotters in Seahouses is one such place. Lots of gorgeous baked goods. As I had travelled from Leeds for a holiday I decided I just had to go home with some treats. The diamond slices were lovely and kept well for a week (it took me some time to eat everything I bought). Although the millionaire brownie was very expensive at £3.80 (ish) for a piece, it was delicious - lovely biscuit base, caramel, brownie and chocolate. What's not to like! It's just a shame there isn't one nearer Leeds (but maybe that would be bad for my waistline). Staff were friendly and the lady who served me was very patient as I took some time deciding what to buy although, in the end, I did buy quite a lot. :-)

Had a couple of nice egg mayo sandwiches here with plenty of filling. Hot drinks are served in paper cups and I’m sure this place could be made better if it offered a table service. The cakes looked quite nice and it seemed fairly busy. Staff weren’t overly friendly and tables could have done with a quick wipe but the lady serving said they did a meal deal for 5.00 which included crisps and a drink so compared to some of the other places in the area serving food this was quite inexpensive.

There was a great range of fabulous looking cakes, however upon eating two out of the three were inedible. I had a custard slice which should have been puff pastry. There certainly was no puff. The pastry was under baked and not nice in the mouth. The custard appeared to be thick birds custard and not the classic French pastry cream. We both had a chocolate dipped flapjack which gave me indigestion as it seemed to be made from cheap margarine and cooking chocolate. My husband took one bite and threw his in the bin. On first glance everything looks lovely, but sadly the ingredients and taste let it down. I wish I could say something nice as I don’t like leaving negative reviews, but this one left me feeling cheated.

On the whole Trotters is not the same as it used to be..no more lovely crusty flour topped buns, I think the sign says it all as they have now removed the word bakers because I suspect they buy everything in mass produced. Gorgeous products, perfect for picnics out and so we used it this week as we have done previously. Today, 27th Oct, woman serving was so rude. Unbelievably. I asked three times for a bag, including when she was tilling up, which she ignored. At the end I asked again for a bag and she replied with, “That’s 10p”. I don’t carry cash. “No bag then” was the reply. She then coughed a thick cough into her wrist and hands, hands that were serving. Eugh. I left, put our lunch into a local bin and went to the co-op. At least their food will be hygienic and comes with a bag to store lunch in while we walk.

I bought quite a few sausage rolls this morning. Which were flat and personally not cooked correctly. I had to cook them myself! My son was devastated as the one I'd bought him last week was delicious..... The quality of this food was worrying..... I wasn't keen on the staff not wearing gloves when handling the buns to make the rolls up. I'm aware it's not a requirement but risks do increase without hair nets and gloves. As a regular we have been going to the Commissioners for a long time however we have recently had a few mixed experiences but we decided to give this place one last go today , and ordered lunch from the lite bites menu, which was very disappointing. 5 bits of scampi, very pale luke warm chips and warm tartar sauce. The pork baguette came in a large bun which was ok, but the chips were awful - scraps from the bottom of the pan, not a single decent bit of potato in the bowl. When we mentioned this to the lady who cleared our table all she said was sorry we’ve had trouble with the potatoes - looking at other folks plates there wasn’t much of a problem with theirs! Such a shame as this place has great potential but we won’t be returning for a very long time.

Decided to give The Black Bull a second chance after having dinner there myself in early June, which was an up and down experience. I had the soup for starters that had so much pepper in it, it would have blew a normal persons head off! I quite like pepper so just managed it ok. The main course arrive and was luke warm, I ate it anyway, but when I was asked if everything was satisfactory, I let the staff member know the food tasted ok, but the temperature wasn’t hot enough. He said that it was a new chef who had only started that week as the old chef had retired, and a few other diners had also made the same complaint, so when I went to pay the bill he knocked the price of the main course off it, which I thought was a fair outcome. During a friendly chat with him before leaving, I said I’d be returning to the area for my family summer break in a few weeks’ time, and he told me that the Sunday roast dinners were fantastic and the old chef would be returning on a Sunday to cook these. I was told to book in advance, as it is was always too busy to just walk in and get a table. So I took onboard the advice and a few weeks later I decided to book a table for the seven of us. We arrived for dinner late afternoon on the Sunday and our table was reserved as expected, staff were nice and friendly and the pub wasn’t that busy, with only another three or four small tables having food. Our orders were duly taken and starters arrived reasonably quickly and everyone enjoyed them. Unfortunately the mains were not as quick, and we had quite a long wait. To make things worse, all the plates of food arrived luke warm, definitely not hot as they should have been. All five adults chose from the Sunday roast menu options with four of us choosing the "Sirloin of Beef" option. The sirloin that was served was not of the greatest quality, and although advertised as being served “pink”, was undercooked and very, very rare, to make this worse, all four pieces of meat were full of gristle and fat, and for most of us, large pieces of it were inedible. We were also put off with the “creamy mash”, which was a strange grey colour, and did not taste good. Also the plate of vegetables that was laid on the table for us all to share was embarrassingly insufficient to satisfy 5 adults, we actually thought the portion was for two to share, and couldn’t believe it when no more arrived. Once we had all finished the meal, we noticed the chef had came out from the kitchen, possibly for a break This was definitely a younger person, and definitely not someone old enough to retire. After a second poor experience in just a few weeks, I will unfortunately not be returning the The Black Bull in Etal village again, and unless the situation changes drastically for the better, I wouldn’t recommend the pub for anyone who is expecting hot food or a quality dining experience.
