The Quay has been a godsend for a Blyth. It delivers quality food , service plus accommodation at reasonable price . It's location is ideal plus it has a good atmosphere with pleasant staff . I would have given 5 stars but as I haven't stayed In hotel side I can't comment on

Bar staff were absolutely lovely. Food was average at best. Overpriced for the quality, apart from the chips which were very nice. I've attached a recipe for tzatziki because the chef seems to need some basic cookery instruction.

Food was quite nice, but dear me, the parking is difficult. Very limited spaces after 10am, none after about 11am. Having to wait for people to leave before you can get in, and a queue in the car park - stressful. Spaces are tight and often have vans or v large cars in them, so for me who doesn't have a disabled badge but needs the door quite open to get in and out, its pretty awful. I can't imagine the spaces are all used by the hotel guests, and the restaurant was empty when we went in, so assume it's the nearby residents. I won't be back, which is a shame, I liked going. But that was a while ago where you had a sporting chance of a space.

We hadn’t eaten here for a long time and decided to try it again to see if the food had improved at all. No it hadn’t and was very disappointing. The croque monsieur looked to have been made earlier. The rooms are spacious for our two large dogs with a balcony they love to go out on and judge people as they walk on by. This place also has a lift so you don't have to lumber up the stairs with your suitcases and collapse in the process. Close by is Ridley park and beaches which you can either walk to or drive to. There is also parking here for guests.

Bar staff was rude and made me feel like a fool for enquiring if the burger had a sauce, ordered 2 double cheese burgers for £30 and the meal was absolutely tasteless, so bland we went to McDonalds straight after. Ordered two cheeseburgers. Awful food. No taste at all. If you want to experience chewing on fresh air here's your chance. Portions tiny, cheese had no taste. Chips though nice, would not have fed a sparrow as portion was tiny. Burger had zero seasoning on it. We ended up going to local McDonald's as still hungry when left. Price was a complete rip off

Worst burgers ever. Tasteless, overpriced and a complete rip off. Bar service about as welcoming as a brick to the head. Feel completely ripped off at 15 pounds a portion - which were stingy to say the least. Won't return as looking at previous reviews, the company gives a generic review saying they will feed it back to the kitchen team but the same issue arises over and over again. Having visited CQ since it's opening I have written some uncomplimentary and some complimentary reviews over the years, principally because of the quality of the meals and ales available. The staff have always been fine. Whether it is because of the chef or the manager, or both, the vastly improved and imaginative menu and the quality of the cooking have made this eating place worth a visit despite me having to drive 10 miles to get there.

We dropped in for a drink and a bite to eat. Hadn't really planned to, but glad we did. Lovely relaxed atmosphere with staff who were just as relaxed, but very attentive without being intrusive. The menu was very good, but not so if you have a gluten intolerance. The menu had a QR code to scan, which opens a menu for allergies. This wasn't ideal and to be honest, I gave up trying to figure it out. Shame, as it did sound like there was potential there. However, the food we did have. A partridge satay with salad was excellent and very enjoyable. We didn't stop over, so can't really comment on the rooms, but if they are as good as the bar I gave them 5 stars. Apparently, a buffet style Sunday dinner is served, believe it or not, every Sunday. Would we come back? Most definitely. Probably on a Sunday!

We ate here when we stayed for a couple of nights. Not hopeful due to the mixed reviews. How surprised we were! Prices to us were very reasonable. Eg we would pay £13 for pizza and £5 per pint of beer and that's the Midlands! I think locals have been very harsh about the prices. Everything has gone up. Food was hot, tasty and plentiful. My mixed seafood starter was huge! Staff very welcoming. We would recommend definitely for a pub meal.

Handy location to eat when having a walk along the quayside area or Ridley Park. Nice decor and comfortable seating with good views out to the river. When the weather is good there is also a large outside patio which also has views over the river. There was not a lot of staff around but those that were there were welcoming and friendly. I went with my grandson, the food was good rather than exceptional. I had Mixed grill (£19) and he had fish and chips (£13), prices where reasonable especially the fish and chips which are now £12 at most chippies for a takeaway and here you get mushy peas and tartare sauce! We finished of with sticky toffee pudding and ice cream, (£5) these were really tasty and portions were good.

Me and my partner were looking for a new place to call our regular day off place to go to eat and drink as all our other places either closed, changed menu not to our taste, or was over priced due to COVID. So we decided to give the commissioner out. We had the winter dinner time menu £10 for a main and any drink soft or alcohol. So far so good fairly reasonable price so I had fish and chips she had Yorkshire pudding wrap. Food was great absolutely over the moon we found out place to go. Two days later we returned for evening meal I wanted pheasant she wanted venison. Soon disappointed as none of which were available. So she had chicken tikka massala and I had mixed grill. Wow curry was a massive let down rice over cooked curry cold and felt like and tasted like a bad microwave meal with no taste. Mixed grill was worse, black pudding raw, fried egg so over done I picked it up like a piece of card board it didn't bend, beef was so tough and fatty steak knife could not cut it. They gave me gravy when asked for peppercorn sauce and the sausages looked boiled and anemic. No manager on shift and no offer of replacement meal. Not wanting to be put off as first time was good we went back 2 days later through day and both had winter menu 2 fish and chips and all was good again brilliant so we decided maybe it was a one off. So again 4 days later as we didn't go out on valentine's we decided to take up on the good offer and stay the night for £109 with breakfast Inc and £52 to spend on a meal. I wanted pheasant and she wanted katsu chicken burger. Well as before pheasant was not available so I ordered the mixed grill hoping it would be better. NO NO NO BIG MISTAKE katsu burger sauce delivered cold mixed grill black pudding was raw and beef so burned all the black charcoal off the grill was swimming on my plate I had to rub the steak with my napkins and clean my plate dry. Never again. Thought we would go to the bar to order something different to drink other than beer and cider saw a sign on the bar any 2 cocktails for £10 so looked at menu debated for 5 mins and when I went to order the girl said if you want the offer you have to order two the same you can't pick 2 different drinks I pointed to the sign that said ANY 2 ,ANY 2 she just looked at me and said well the signs wrong so what do you want. I said two ciders please she picked them up by the top of the bottles putting her dirty hands around the rim. I just though we're was the service there knowing we had these other issues. Clearly didn't want to go above and beyond or even offer any good service. Poor attitude to argue with the customer especially when she knew her sign was wrong. Overall Breakfast was good, service was poor, had to ask for a second towel in the room as even though I had a room for two people they only provided 1 towel. Room was good except tea and coffee facilities let down loads of tea and coffee but only 3 milk cartons when it takes 2 per drink and only 1 biscuit I don't get it. Team in there through day seem more friendly than evening. Meals way better through day than evening. Some staff are good excellent service but some I think need a lesson in how to smile and how to deliver good customer service. Please read this and fix the issues and please someone go and check your posters and offers around the hotel they don't match and the all contradict each other. Cocktail menu on bar says ANY 2 FOR £10. poster near breakfast area says winter breaks offer from £99 then near the lift it says winter breaks offer from £89 and yet the venue says different again.

We visited recently as a family for my sisters birthday. Having booked a table we were shown to our table, which unbeknown to us was in the 'dog area', at no point during booking was I told we were being sat in the 'dog area' or asked if that was ok. It's not as my sister is severely allergic. We asked to move tables and were treated in the most inhospitable way, despite the restaurant being fairly quiet the waitress acted like we were asking her to move Mount Everest. It took a much younger waitress to come over and reshuffle another table for us. This was after the older waitress gave me a loud lecture in front of lots of Other customers about how it is my responsibility to make them aware of any allergies. My apologies I thought this related to food allergies, given that I thought we were attending a restaurant not a farmyard. Even without my sisters allergies I wouldn't want to be eating dog hair with my meal, personally I think it's extremely unhygienic! Within my family we also have allergies to dust, feathers and penicillin .... was it my responsibility to outline those also?!?! The waitresses disgusting attempt at managing the situation left my sister in the toilets in tears on her birthday! Upon leaving the restaraunt I searched high and low for any signage that informed customers with allergies that dogs were allowed in. There's none! Apparently it's the customers responsibility to use their telepathy skills and god help you if you don't! The food is below basic and you'll wait about half an hour at the bar to get a drink so definitely not worth the hassle!

The visit to this place was booked in advanced, as its not common for most food outlets due to Covid. After waiting for a few minutes, we were led to our table, and made our choices for our meal and drinks. When the order was given at the bar, some items were absent from the menu, such as steak pie for mains and Mackerel Pâté for starter. The ones who had no steak pie made the order of what was requested, went away to decide upon a different main course for themselves, and then returned. I being one such person, I ordered a well done sirloin steak. Starters were served, and the potato skins were edible but were very lacklustre in presentation and flavour. Main course were brought, however, my sister did not have her course of fish and chips brought to her, as the staff claimed it was not part of the order. It had to be explained that there were in fact two separate orders, the dish being part of the first one. To add salt the wound, after waiting for her meal, the meal was brought with the wrong side dish of mushy peas instead of the beans that were requested. So despite the fact that there had been an error, the staff did not think it prudent to check on what my sister had wanted, and made assumptions. The dessert came but by this stage, our party was less than impressed by the manner in which the operation of the service was done, and especially consider this was a £100 experience we were paying for. I will not be coming back to this establishment as the food was subpar, the service mediocre, and for the price of this experience, far too high. You will have what I call the running man experience, first you are run a high bill, run ragged by the constant mishaps that you have to incur with ordering the meal and getting the meal, before finally running for the hills from this poorly led establishment.

I have reviewed the hotel separately. We had booked a room including dinner on the first night, but as we were shown to our table we were warned that there was a 30 min delay for food. Our drinks arrived promptly and we studied the menu of fairly standard dishes. I ordered crab cakes and smoked haddock linguine. My wife opted for scampi, but these had just finished, so she chose belly pork instead. We then waited for nearly an hour before anything was served. My crab cakes were fine and we shared them; my pasta had nice smoked fish pieces, but far too much cream so that in the end I couldn’t finish it. We have eaten all over Italy and there we have never experienced the compulsion to add cream to every pasta sauce - it is a peculiarly English thing. My wife’s crispy belly pork didn’t seem very crispy and was presented as a large pale lump from which the meat had to be extracted.Service was cheerful (although I found the constant use of ‘guys’ to grate a bit after a while) and the restaurant is attractive in the modern style, but in a restaurant the food is the important thing and thsi was really not up to scratch. At breakfast the next morning the choice was limited to ‘full English’ but in spite of that limitation service was a bit slow and the food when it arrived was a little dry and overcooked. We looked in vain for obvious altenatives in Blyth for our second dinner, but this time the service and the food at the Commissioner’s Quay was quicker and better, although we did go for safer options this time. Breakfast on the second morning was very slow, not just for us, and the food was if anything a bit cool. There is plenty of room for improvement in this restaurant - hopefully that will happen since the hotel itself is very good.

Very good service and service recovery. We had dinner and we’re staying at the hotel. We had a table over looking the sea which was lovely. The food wasn’t what we hoped but the staff dealt with the situation really well and credited my meal from the bill. The asparagus, hollandaise sauce and eggs were perfectly cooked and roasted vegetables were tasty.

I have been eating at Commissioners Quay about once a month since it was built. It got off to a shaky start, but settled down after a month or two. The menu was never earth shattering, but apart from an incident when the beef pie was more vegetables than beef it was always (fairly) cheap and cheerful. The new menu looked much more varied and in that promise we visited today in our first masked visit.Having booked online we were given the table we requested in an area with plenty of screens. After a longish delay our order for food and drinks was taken. The drinks arrived first and I had to return the cloudy beer, which any decent barman should have spotted. However it was changed without question.I ordered the chilli chicken and my wife, the Moroccan chicken. Both were presented nicely, but I fear it was an illusion. My chilli appeared to have been 'put together' and certainly not cooked as a single dish. The chicken was plentiful but tasteless and sitting in a thin (certainly NOT 'sticky') chilli sauce with a few tired shredded vegetables and enough noodles to knit a vest. The Moroccan Chicken fared worse. Two pieces of coloured, yet tasteless chicken, perched on a pile of plain quinoa over a large chunk of soggy flatbread, with some blobs of pink yoghurt(?) to garnish. Most of the quinoa and all the flatbread were left.Friends would argue that I should have complained, but it would have embarrassed my wife and the waitress and involved a wait for a second meal to be prepared. So here I am.The place is clean and well kept; the toilets are spotless, although the centre urinal in the gents should not be being used for Covid safety.I may return, but if I do then I will be avoiding anything vaguely 'exotic' on the menu.

Myself and my daughter came on a Thursday lunchtime check in was straight forward and we asked to be seated outside and were told waitress service and we were given our menus. From there it went downhill waitress service was non existent till we managed to attract someone who was serving someone else.Orders eventually placed drinks arrived promptly but food took a while. One of the orders was a tea cake which arrived with no butter or jam and it took at least 5 mins for this to arrive which I find unacceptable. They were quick to ask us to pay before food arrived.I will not be rushing back

Paid £36 for three Sunday lunches, waited 35 minutes for it to arrive. The plate was only half full. Non of us are big eaters and never pile our plates high even when you can serve yourself but I would expect to feel satisfied after a Sunday lunch. We left still feeling hungry.

Booked for a mid-week lunch at 1.30pm. Initial service great, menus given, drinks order taken, we were informed no currys were available that day (thus ruling out probably 3-4 choices) We ordered the food, sharing platter not available, halumi salad not available. I decided on fish pie. No lumps of fish in pie, it consisted of minced salmon, peas and cream, a very odd sickly combination. My mum had chicken salad..the chicken was also minced and looked more like tuna, but she said it tasted ok. On the desert order the only flavour ice cream available was strawberry. After having waited a full hour to be served food it was a very disappointing experience all round..will not be hurrying back thats for sure.

Small portions for Sunday lunch.Food was lovely there wasn’t enough. We aren’t fat or greedy people but leaving hungry after a Sunday lunch is not on. Tiny portion of mash 2 roast potatoes 1 small Yorkshire pud. Only 2 options standard or small I would hate to see the small if we had the standard. Won’t return until full carvery is back. Couple beside us also commented on small portion size. Also the wine is ridiculously expensive. If you sold at reasonable prices people would stay longer and drink more.

Great food but sadly that’s where it ends! No problem getting a seat on a usually busy Sunday but we think Covid isn’t entirely the reason why! The service was ridiculously bad, plenty of staff but zero organisation. I had to flag down waitresses on numerous occasions, they seemed too busy chatting behind the bar. The entire visit left a sour taste in our mouth and being foodies, two things stick in our mind! 1. We were asked to pay our bill whilst we were still eating. 2. A waiter brought out my desert and it was not what described on the menu, when I asked him what it was he replied “I don’t know”. I ask myself what sort of place would do this? My answer is a place I shall never visit again! Shame as it used to be good!

Great place! Room with a balcony overlooking the Blyth river and sea beyond. It’s on the quay and as Blyth is a working port, it’s on an industrialised street but only a 5 min walk into Blyth. Staff were excellent and the breakfast was plentiful. Good Covid safe arrangements. Couldn’t fault it. Had a meal in the bar one evening and it’s reasonable pub grub. Would recommend for a base to explore Northumberland (not much in Blyth itself). Great restaurant Caboose - on the quay itself and had a meal at the Asmara Indian restaurant one night, which was great food but didn’t feel very Covid safe.

We tried here as part of the inn group after trying the amble inn amble. I have to say the turkey and the mash was better here, than the latter, but I preferred the beef and roasties at other place. The theme is similar but less nautical artefacts than at its sister pub. It’s a good place to catch up with work colleagues I would say and location probably draws the after work crowd. Booking in advance advised and also ask for a sea view table.

Nice looking hotel. Interior decor great. Dog friendly, all the staff were great.Horrible location amongst warehouse/Harbour working units etc at the ‘arse end of town’. Room disappointing, even tho i’d booked a premium room, - just basic facilities. Food is basic pub grub everything with chips & greasy. Breakfast pretty dreadful. Cremated bacon which was solid, salty slices you couldn’t fork because they shattered into a million bits, congealed eggs, Burnt hash browns, greasy mushrooms, sausages that looked and tasted like they'd been reheated 3 times already. No choice to have scrambled eggs cooked, or a boiled egg - or anything else whatsoever. Take it or leave it on the greasy fry up front. - and no I didn't want most of it I tried to say “can I just have.....” but it was all piled on the plate anyway. Nowhere for ‘residents’ to sit after the evening meal ended. No comfy residents lounge to have a couple after a meal or chat with the new acquaintances you have made, play cards, whatever. By 9pm the restaurant was empty and the staff were leaving and shouting “good night” very loudly at you as they left. 9.30!. There is no choice but to go to your room and prop yourself up on your bed and put the telly on. (Great if thats your thing). (When was that ever comfortable)Very poor. Very disappointed. This is not on a thoroughfare. The people there were pretty much all residents. But no thought for what the residents needs are. Lots of space to do it, but its not provided.

The room is very spacious and comfortable.Excellent cleaning standard a great housekeeping team.Very happy The food however does not match the standards of the rooms.Breakfast was served at the buffet.Totally dead fried eggs so I asked for scrambled but I had already been served the bacon sausage and tomatoes. The cook said they would bring the eggs over to the table. However by the time the eggs arrived I had eaten most of my breakfast.I will know tomorrow morning to order the eggs first then when they arrive go back for the rest of the meal! The sausages are not nice (sorry)Bacon dried out on the hot plate and fried eggs would put anyone off ordering as so dead having stood too long on the Bain Marie. We also had a meal the first day of arrival.I had Salmon which was dry outside but nice and soft inside. The crispy potatoes turned out to be soggy fried new potatoes ( not edible) for me.My husbands Gammon and chips were all over cooked not a great meal.So we chose not to dine here the second night.

Visited here on a Saturday lunchtime with my wife and son whilst in the area. Checked-in promptly, shown to a table and that was where the good experience ended. Took 25 mins to take a drinks order and that was only made possible by us proactively asking a passing wait staff if we could be served. She seemed oblivious of our wait and seemed a bit ‘put out’. Drinks arrived a further ten mins after that and then food after a further 20. No apology for the wait, nothing. The food was bland and very average but the worst bit, barely warm. By this point we’d had enough and hust wanted out as it going to make us late for our arrangements elsewhere in Blyth. Guess what...yep, I had to get up again, walk to the bar to ask someone to give me the bill since the wait staff clearly weren’t able to deal with table service. Paid and promptly left. I don’t usually check TA for lunch trips or anything and so read prev reviews while we were there. Had i known, I’d have steered well clear. Never again.

Our family travelled up from Sheffield so we decided to take them to the Commissioners Quay for an evening meal on Saturday, BIG MISTAKE. We arrived on time for our booking 6-30 and where shown our table, after a while our drinks order was taken and they arrived a few minutes later. When they arrived we placed our starter and main meals selection after about twenty minutes the starters arrived which were quite good. We then WAITED AND WAITED for our main courses to arrive which NEVER did approaching 8pm a one and a half hours after our booking time a waitress approached us and asked if we had eaten,I told her no meals had come to our table and we had been waiting a long time, she said she would go and check. 5 minutes later the meals appeared and they were a disgrace they had obviously been cooked a long time and had been left standing in the kitchen,my Gammon steak was badly overcooked and unedable,a pile of frozen peas and cold old chips were also unedable, the salmon was dry and cold with the tiniest portion of vegetables I had ever seen in my life My Wife ate part of her chicken but left a lot along with the frozen peas and chips. The only meal half decent was our Sons Tomahawk Steak and at nearly £30 it should have been perfect but I would class it as lower class. Our evening was completely ruined by the food and very poor service, being with our family it was highly embarrassing no apologies offered and no reduction in the bill which came to over £100. We left and vowed never to return. The Managers comments would be appreciated to this review. As a footnote to this review on Monday 17th of August we took some other members of our Family for a meal to a restaurant at WELDON BRIDGE ,what a difference like chalk and cheese, perfect meal and perfect service, I shall review this later. Perhaps the Manager could send his staff to see how a restaurant. should be run. Good customers LOST micannemac

Whilst I appreciate Covid 19 has had an effect on how things are done the whole thing was a disaster from start to finish.Arrived at 12:05 and shown straight to a table.Waited 15 minutes for someone to take drinks order so ordered our food at the same time. The drinks arrived but were not what we ordered. Just kept them as they were only soft drinks so not really that much of a problem.Waited a further 30 minutes for our starters to arrive which were luke warm and actually not that good. Waited a further hour from finishing our starters for our main courses despite speaking to the waitress 3 times who kept saying they were on their way. Main courses also luke warm and not that good either. It took nearly 2 hours from arriving to leaving in a half full restaurant for 2 luke warm mediocre meals. Will not be returning.Thank goodness for the Eat out to help out scheme as I would have hated to have paid full price! As a side note, a large family came in and was seated at the next table. There was barely a foot between us. So much for the 2 metre distancing. We had to drag our table and chairs into a corner in order to maintain social distancing.

Decided to give The Black Bull a second chance after having dinner there myself in early June, which was an up and down experience. I had the soup for starters that had so much pepper in it, it would have blew a normal persons head off! I quite like pepper so just managed it ok. The main course arrive and was luke warm, I ate it anyway, but when I was asked if everything was satisfactory, I let the staff member know the food tasted ok, but the temperature wasn’t hot enough. He said that it was a new chef who had only started that week as the old chef had retired, and a few other diners had also made the same complaint, so when I went to pay the bill he knocked the price of the main course off it, which I thought was a fair outcome. During a friendly chat with him before leaving, I said I’d be returning to the area for my family summer break in a few weeks’ time, and he told me that the Sunday roast dinners were fantastic and the old chef would be returning on a Sunday to cook these. I was told to book in advance, as it is was always too busy to just walk in and get a table. So I took onboard the advice and a few weeks later I decided to book a table for the seven of us. We arrived for dinner late afternoon on the Sunday and our table was reserved as expected, staff were nice and friendly and the pub wasn’t that busy, with only another three or four small tables having food. Our orders were duly taken and starters arrived reasonably quickly and everyone enjoyed them. Unfortunately the mains were not as quick, and we had quite a long wait. To make things worse, all the plates of food arrived luke warm, definitely not hot as they should have been. All five adults chose from the Sunday roast menu options with four of us choosing the "Sirloin of Beef" option. The sirloin that was served was not of the greatest quality, and although advertised as being served “pink”, was undercooked and very, very rare, to make this worse, all four pieces of meat were full of gristle and fat, and for most of us, large pieces of it were inedible. We were also put off with the “creamy mash”, which was a strange grey colour, and did not taste good. Also the plate of vegetables that was laid on the table for us all to share was embarrassingly insufficient to satisfy 5 adults, we actually thought the portion was for two to share, and couldn’t believe it when no more arrived. Once we had all finished the meal, we noticed the chef had came out from the kitchen, possibly for a break This was definitely a younger person, and definitely not someone old enough to retire. After a second poor experience in just a few weeks, I will unfortunately not be returning the The Black Bull in Etal village again, and unless the situation changes drastically for the better, I wouldn’t recommend the pub for anyone who is expecting hot food or a quality dining experience.

A nice location with different menu. We both had the slow roast with the morrocan twist. Would certainly recommend the place to others.
