We called Tricia at The Trellis Restaurant to book an Afternoon Tea to celebrate our wedding anniversary with our daughters. Tricia provided all our favourite sandwich fillings, cakes of our choice and beautiful scones. When we arrived we were greeted by a lovely, polite and professional waitress who went out of her way to make us welcome. We took 4 dogs and they were welcomed too. We had proper vintage china. All the food was amazing. Tricia even added a few extra bits, such as fresh strawberries. It was extremely good value for money and we all agreed it was the BEST Afternoon Tea ever, and that even beats the one we had at Langhams in London! Would highly recommend and will be going back again soon.

Really lovely place, absolutely beautiful and family friendly with very fun donut cushions that my children adored! The roast was delicious and tasted very homemade, and my husband had a cream tea and said they were the best scones he’d ever had in his life - with real strawberries in the jam! Excellent service as well, very friendly and the atmosphere was cheery and relaxing. Will be coming back soon!

Serves a simple "traditional" menu (nothing adventurous), inside is small with busy decor, very much trying to step back several decades (music to match). The simple food was pleasant, the pot of tea was generous and served in old fashioned mismatched china (which I liked).

Food was poor. The fish was boil in the bag and the French stick with the ploughman’s had been reheated The waitress with long dark hair was trying to get as much money as possible out of people for tips. What a lovely little place this is! We sat inside (as a family of 5 - parent, kids & grandparents) & everywhere you looked there was something quirky & interesting to feast your eyes on - from vintage car collectors cards, to ration books & hanging tea cups. The food was great & very good value - real home cooked delicious food, very generous portion sizes & considering we all ordered five different mains, it arrived very quickly & cooked perfectly. With 2 fussy children in tow - the menu options were very good & varied, & both kids really enjoyed their meals (steak pie, broccoli, carrots, peas & chips and plaice fish, chips & peas). Both said they would be very happy to go back again soon. So hats off to those in the kitchen, as well as the gentleman waiting on us, for a wonderful lunch. We look forward to returning. They also do traditional cream teas with fresh scones, so will definitely be returning to try those soon too.

On a temporarily sunny moment, we dropped in for tea and cake. Wonderful ambiance, friendly service and fabulous cake. We`ve been before and it`s always great and therapeutic. You feel better for the experience. The tea was very tasty and served in beautiful cups- just enough for two in a big pot and plenty of hot water. The coffee and walnut cake was delicious with strawberries, whipped cream (?) and a butterscotch drizzle served on delightful windmill plates. There were also extra separate walnut pieces. This place is such a treat and beneficial in our times without being twee. Even a visit upstairs to the toilet is a delight in this old cottage. Enough said, do go yourself!!!

Afternoon tea was ok, fairly average. My partner had a cheese toastie, again, very average. I had a tuna mayo jacket potato. Firstly it was a TINY potato! The inside was just complete mush, it looked like it had been filled with cheap and nasty mashed potato! (Didn’t touch any of the meal) I mentioned it to the gentleman serving us, and was just met by attitude, telling me there was nothing wrong with them, and they ‘melt on your mouth’. This may be true, but I could have eaten mine through a straw! Ps- the coffee is just nespresso type pod coffe and tastes like rottingdean pond water warmed up.

A chilly afternoon and I knew I was pushing my luck inviting friends to a cream tea in Rottingdean. I tried two tea shops which were closed so I was surprised and delighted to find The Trellis open, a fire in the grate and a menu which went beyond tea and scones. The menu was long and varied. They even offer a Sunday roast. Dogs are welcome and I loved the decor: posters, plates, teapots and a whole lot more. They had my choice of tea; the scones were delicious with generous pots of home-made jam and whipped cream. My young guests loved hot chocolate with marshmallows and the cakes pleased everyone. The prices were reasonable: £5:50 for tea and cake. Thank you The Trellis for making my afternoon such a pleasure.

It was lovely to visit our favourite cafe again today, after almost 6 months. My friend and I sat outside in the pretty garden with her two children for lunch. We had a huge baked potato with cheese, beans and tuna which the children shared, I had a Tipsy Ploughman’s which included a free glass of wine and it was delicious with hot baguette, cheese, roast ham and some divine chutney. They make lovely home-made coleslaw too. My friend had home-made leek and potato soup with bread and cheese and chutney which she said was amazing and really good value at £6.50. We were a bit full but so glad we shared a gorgeous sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream and 4 spoons! It was a little bit chilly but the garden is enclosed and we were warm enough, can’t wait to visit again when we are allowed to eat inside by the fire!

Trellis provided a delicious cream tea for myself and my mum, who had travelled from Australia to visit me. The shop is on the gorgeous Rottingdean High Street, set back from the road (which is great, as the constant flow of traffic is a pain) and the interior is a fabulous step back in time; quaint, eclectic, cosy and old fashioned, the restaurant is full to bursting with interesting antique knick knacks of local historical interest. Perfect for my history buff mum!The cream tea itself was scrumptious and very reasonably priced when you consider that each person receives two very large scones and a seemingly endless pot of tea, along with large bowls virtually overflowing with jam and cream. I tend to overdo it with my scone toppings - I go for lashings of both jam and cream - and even I couldn't get to the bottom of the bowls.Mum and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and I'll definitely be taking her back next time she's visiting Brighton.

I have been visiting The Trellis Restaurant in Rottingdean for many years on my regular visits to Woodingdean, Brighton, etc. It always delivers good home cooking and friendly, helpful service.I believe the building itself dates back to the 1600's and in places it could do with sympathetic repair. However, I find the overall style very charming and oddly reassuring. In an age when trendy coffee shops litter most high streets charging the earth for unremarkable beverages and food, it is a joy to find a little gem like The Trellis continuing to serve the local community and visitors, like myself, with good food, friendly service and relaxing surroundings. As the name suggests, there is a trellis enclosed seating area outside as well as the restaurant inside.I would definitely recommend a visit.

I really wanted to have afternoon tea at the Trellis due to the beautiful front garden, A friend of mine who is a village resident told me not to as it was a "Tourist trap". I wanted to Judge for myself. The crumbling walls covered up with tea towels were very off putting. The tea was with very cheap tasting, when the scone arrived no amount of microwave heating could resuscitate it, this scone was clearly beyond its sell by date.I was really disappointed with what looked from the outside a very nice place.

Stumbled across this quirky little restaurant by chance while walking along the High Street in Rottingdean one morning. It looked interesting so my wife and I decided we would call in for coffee and what a pleasant surprise we had when we entered, it was just like stepping back to the 1950's. An old fashioned fireplace full of ornaments, brasses and even ration books, it also boasted the tiniest bar I've come across. We throughly enjoyed our coffee and was very tempted at the delicious looking cakes and sponges on display. Not able to comment on the food only to say it was very busy in the outside terrace area for Sunday lunch.

Since the new owner took over I’ve become a regular - the sandwiches are so nice and with *so* much filling, they’re such good value compared to most places. The owner is really friendly and accommodating and I can usually park outside.

Just had to wait 40 minutes for breakfast and missed our train. I was told that the delay was because they were very busy, which clearly wasn’t true as the place wasn’t full. Our order had obviously got forgotten even though they were overstaffed. I counted 4 people serving about 15 customers. The staff were happily talking about their holidays and dating, and taking cigarette breaks, rather than checking the orders had been processed. The chef even came out for a coffee break and gossip - while we had been waiting 30 mins. In fairness they did apologise profusely and took some items off the bill. The breakfast was ok when it came but certainly not worth the wait.

Fantastic breakfast. Easily changed tomato and mushrooms for extra sausage and bacon. Clean and staff are lovely. Free tea and coffee with breakfast.
