Treacle and Ginger had been recommended to me so I thought I should make a visit. The cafe is small and was crowded. Finding a seat was not easy.. The staff were very friendly. I had a mug of Yorkshire tea and a piece of Victoria sponge cake. My cake was disappointing as it was rather dry.

THE BEST COFFEE EVER!! Visited on a cold February morning with a friend. We had two coffees, sadly not enough time for cake but the selection looked fab, especially the meringues. The staff were super friendly and put no pressure on us to order food or move, even as lunch time approached. Cannot recommend highly enough.

I met with a couple of friends for tea and a chat and this tea room was recommended to us. I have to say that the recommendation was not wrong. Lovely choice of food to choose from, catering for vegan and gluten free diets as well, Also a great collection of tea, coffee and soft drinks. Located opposite the Tesco in Hove, you can park in the car park and it is just a short walk. Wonderful friendly service.

Lovely warm and gently buzzy atmosphere, friendly staff and tasty food. We had the veggie brunch which was delicious. Can cater fro special diets: our dish was also mostly fine for a keto diet and I heard someone else come in and get a wheat free cake. Prices perfectly reasonable. Like a middle class breakfast cafe: quiet conversations, efficient service. Good place for brunch - shame they don't do dinner.

this is my usual spot for a brunch with friends. Good coffee, nice menu, although it is a bit pricier than other cafes. I like the atmosphere and the cute area outside at the back. Last time I went with a friend, we weren't’ too impressed though. The cafe became quite busy and waitress kept asking if we wanted another drink or a bill, clearly wanted us out, even thought we both had brunches and two coffees each. There were other tables available, but we ended up getting annoyed and left. I do get they want to free the tables to make as much money as possible, but it’s not like we were there for 3 hours!

I walk past this spot every working day and I finally popped in for a coffee with my other half. Well the cakes and brunch menu looked so delicious... we had to come back the next day for food. Vegan and veggie friendly, brunch was so yummy and I even managed to fit in a slice of warm salted breakfast loaf too. I would definitly recommend this place for its quality and friendly staff. Plus it has a new outside court yard to take you away from the busy Church Road.

I LOVE(!) this cafe as a rule, visiting at the weekend even though I live a good distance away in Haywards Heath. Although I hadn't been for a while, I visited the weekend before last with a friend who I wanted to introduce to the place. We both had the sweet potato hash with two pots of tea for two, finished off by a cheesecake and a meringue. It was one of my favourite meals EVER(!) as usual and couldn't wait to go back. Lovely hot and fresh food, extremely faloursome tea, and a wonderful and huge fruit meringue.

I have been a customer at this cafe for 6 years and have enjoyed many cups of coffee and slices of cake. I visited the cafe this morning to read my book and have a coffee while I waited for my wife to go to the opticians. I didn't anticipate being there for long but, when it approached an hour, I ordered a second coffee. With my second coffee completed, I was asked if I was going to order lunch or, if not, would I mind making room for the lunch time rush. I had been there for 1.5 hours. Whilst there is nothing wrong necessarily with asking, it demonstrates a change in their ethos from a cafe that you can nurse a coffee and read a book in, to a place that turns tables and monitors what you are consuming. I felt that I had no option to stay and that I had to leave. Whist the coffee is nice and the service is average, I felt unwelcome and unvalued and left deciding that I will never go here again.

I do not mind a cafe where the prices are a touch above the ordinary, as long as I feel that the food and service matches this. Treacle & Ginger hit the mark. I went there with my wife and two grown up daughters. We each had the Sussex breakfast, accompanied by 3 Mochas and a Cold Remedy. There was nothing to fault any part of this. The breakfast were spot on, especially the delicious mushrooms (cooked in garlic and a hint of chilli). The eggs, whether fried, scrambled or poached, were all to our liking. Bacon and sausages were well cooked, but that is how we each like them. Toast was perfect. Whilst these were filling, this was a treat day, so we opted for a slice of cake each. These were two Chocolate Brownies, Chocolate Cake (vegan), and Carrot Cake. The brownies are as good as I have ever tasted, slight crust on top but with that hint of stodginess inside that a bronze should have, and boy were they chocolatey. My wife maintains that Wheat & Beanz in Kemptown does the best Carrot Cake she has ever tasted, but told me this was a close second. The service was excellent and friendly. It was very clean inside, as was the cutlery. Decor is eclectic and pleasing. All in all, I can't fault our visit, but if you are going to try it out, remember, it's not cheap in the world of cafes, just worth it.

Really good home-made bakewell tart (with cream & home-made compote) and excellent tea for me - I asked for a mix of English breakfast & Earl Grey which was happily granted by the charming & friendly man who served us - and he got the mix just right (not too much Earl Grey). The café had been recommended to us by a friend so we took the opportunity to visit one Saturday morning. Not quite sure why my friend had recommended it as we had a very different experience to hers! The café was sold to us as vintage and quaint. In our opinion it was extremely tired and dirty. My newspaper constantly stuck to the table which became very annoying after a while. The table was sticky and grubby and the wall tiles looked like they hadn’t been cleaned for decades. The menus looked like they had seen better days and my copy of the menu was ripped and stained. I am sure this is not the impression the staff want to give to customers.Although pleasant enough, the staff seemed distracted and it took ages for our coffee and cake to arrive. The cake was good but the coffee was barely warm. We didn’t have the time or the inclination to send it back and ask for a replacement. It was busy and chaotic and the staff weren’t handling the rush particularly well. There were some unhappy and disgruntled people who had clearly been waiting for their drinks longer than we had.The final disappointment was the gents toilets which my boyfriend found absolutely disgusting. How a business can claim to be vintage and classic and make available such dirty and broken facilities is beyond belief. There are much better places to have coffee and cake in the Hove and Brighton area, so I would thoroughly recommend you discount this one and find a cleaner and more efficient venue.

I recently visited this cafe in Hove to have a coffee...It is intimate enough that you feel completely comfortable drinking or dining on your own and spacious enough for the odd larger group...I feel compelled to write a review just because it seems that independent cafes like Treacle & co, which have genuine charm and serve great coffee and homemade food and cakes are becoming fewer as larger chains increase their portfolio...The member of staff who served me couldn't have been more friendly and added a real personal touch to my visit. As I was having a dinner party that evening I decided to buy a selection of their tarts for desert, which were delicious and went down very well with my guests. More importantly Most of the cakes and other offerings on display weren't covered over...... therefore people were breathing and leaning over them and all the germs that go with that just put me offI didn't bother to order the cake or even stay for a coffee Bitterly disappointed after such a long journey.

The cakes are gorgeous. That should be all I need say really. There are few cafes of this size with such a wide variety of different homemade cakes on offer. I defy anyone to not find one to their liking!

Rustic, fashionable coffee shop with delicious cakes that taste as good as they look on display! Had an healthy lunch of sweet potato hash, poached egg, chorizo, avocado, spinach & fresh toasted bread. Yum yum treble yum! My partner had a breakfast sandwich. That was great too.

Met up with a friend for catch-up, she suggested Treacle. I was looking forwards to a treat, sadly not to be. So many of the cakes were on uncovered display ! People were leaning over the cakes to pay for food. Had tea and fruit slice, quite dry but tasty. Prices were high.

When you bite into something and instantly say wow out loud this is somewhere that you want to recommend and make sure other people try there too. We arrived almost at closing on a wer Sunday, we hopefully asked if they were still serving and were told of course by friendly, jolly staff. We then ooh and aahed over all the cakes finding it hard to decide. We all had something different and we all thought ours was the best. It's quirky , table lamps and an eclectic mix of sugar bowls on each table , on our table we had a mini alladin's lamp and a pottery pineapple. The hot drinks were all hot and very very nice . Not cheap but then tea/coffee and high quality cakes are not cheap anywhere nowadays at least you are getting excellent quality and friendly staff in a clean and welcoming environment and that cannot be said for high street chain coffee shops . I wish I had brought some mince pies to take away . We will be going back .

Went in for late breakfast and was hoping for a Danish with my coffee. Instead I had to eat cake! Had the most delicious pecan and orange cake I have ever tasted. So many flavours and really moist. A bit naughty for breakfast but...orange and nuts are healthy! Would like the recipe as not local please. I won't tell anyone.

I've been here several times, locally it has a good reputation. The prices however have tipped it in to a new league one which the quality doesn't match. It's the most expensive place for a coffee, nothing special to go with the price. Plus you wait ages for it. I find it a bit grubby too, the stairs down to the kitchen and toilets are very greasy. It's not a place I would want to order food from. There are better places locally to go than this now.

At first I thought this cafe was fab. The poached egg with avocado was beautiful I bought take out cakes for my kids and they weren't so great - very dry. Then I went back in for another meal and was totally put off to see dozens of flies (smaller than blue bottles but bigger than fruit flies) crawling out of the pile of meringues they have uncovered on the counter. When I used the toilet it really wasn't clean and it has totally put me off. It's a shame. The cakes LOOK great, the food I had was tasty and the staff are very attentive but it isn't clean and that was a deal breaker for me.

Since the new owner took over I’ve become a regular - the sandwiches are so nice and with *so* much filling, they’re such good value compared to most places. The owner is really friendly and accommodating and I can usually park outside.

Just had to wait 40 minutes for breakfast and missed our train. I was told that the delay was because they were very busy, which clearly wasn’t true as the place wasn’t full. Our order had obviously got forgotten even though they were overstaffed. I counted 4 people serving about 15 customers. The staff were happily talking about their holidays and dating, and taking cigarette breaks, rather than checking the orders had been processed. The chef even came out for a coffee break and gossip - while we had been waiting 30 mins. In fairness they did apologise profusely and took some items off the bill. The breakfast was ok when it came but certainly not worth the wait.
