Busby and Wilds in Brighton and Hove

A number of years ago we found this little gem of an eatery, it was quite empty but we had a fabulous meal. Great to see that it is still in the same hands. It was quiet again when we went there today but the food was just as good as when we last visited. Don't go expecting any of the usual suspects of drinks behind the bar, they like to specialise on local brews and produce. We will be back but hopefully sooner rather than later.

Great food with top friendly welcoming service

There is an open atmosphere of hostility here. The owners seem to be going through some kind of mental breakdown, I’ve looked at their Instagram and it’s pathetic and needy and quite honestly WEIRD. Food was okay though.

The best cali cheese, the best tender beef and seriously yummy gravy and crispy pots. Sooo good roast dinner and great staff, no waiting. Thank you & see you again very soon.

Visited today for Sunday roast with 4 friends. First time going and we had a really lovely time. The staff were so nice and friendly and helpful (I’m sorry, didn’t get names!). The food was excellent - well prepared, fresh and tasty - the veg: broccoli, green beans, carrot, cabbage & cauliflower cheese all tasted like they were supposed to (call me old fashioned, but I do like a carrot to taste like a carrot). We had: 2x pork belly, 1x chicken Caesar salad (not your average chicken Caesar), 1x confit chicken leg salad, 1x vege wellington - we all really enjoyed our food, followed by 2 sticky toffee puddings and 1 raspberry and chocolate pudding cake (the sticky toffee is probably the best I’ve had yet in Brighton). And they’ve a delightful garden. There’s lots more on offer here and we’ll definitely be back!

I had my very first Sunday roast in the UK and Busby and Wilds exceeded my expectations. To be honest, I didn't know what to expect and the Lambs Roast was mind blowing. I'll definitely come back next time I visit Kempt Town. Oh, the service and all staff members were very attentive too. Thanks for the experience.

This was not our first visit to Busby and Wilds but we haven't been down to Brighton for a while and this was a reminder of how good it is. We had a meal for nine with an age range of six to sixty five. The service couldn't have been better - responsive, warm and professional with a particular attention to the youngest members sudden 'needs'. The food was perfect - beautifully cooked and served. It made for a thoroughly enjoyable gathering in a perfect setting. Thank you

Incredible Sunday roast & lovely staff!!

Terrible Sunday Roast…..yorkshire pudding was burnt and it came in a float of watery ‘gravy’…chewy meat (maybe it was just a bad day). The customer service was poor ….no apology when complained.

Wow, what a great find. Lovely place, lovely staff, amazing food. We couldn't believe they catered so well for gluten-free. This restaurant definitely kicked off our weekend away perfectly.

Really super Sunday lunch in a perfect cosy setting Very friendly staff, cannot fault at all. I thought was also good value and I would definitely go again if in the area. Clearly popular, so must book as full all day, which is always a good sign. I was a table of four and we all had the Sunday roast , beef, pork or lamb in our case. All delicious

A little hidden-away on the edges of Kemptown, I had the best steak I’ve ever had in Brighton. All ingredients are locally sourced at Busby & Wilds - they even have a map on the wall informing where each ingredient is sourced from around Sussex and bordering counties. You can definitely tell from taste that the ingredients are fresh and high-quality. The steak was delicious and large and it was cooked perfectly. The chimichurri and side salad were perfect accoutrements and so were the chips. I was very impressed and thought it was good value. I’ve paid more for a lot worse steaks before. The restaurant has a nice ambience and it’s dog-friendly which was very helpful for us. Wine was nice too. Will be back to try the roasts.

Surprisingly disappointing, we had very mixed experiences. Hubby had crab pot starter and mussels main and couldn’t fault it. I had crispy pork starter and sirloin main, both were tough pieces of inedible meat. No one asked if we enjoyed the meal until the end, they were impossible to catch the eye despite it being a quiet night in a small restaurant. When I asked for the service charge to be removed because of the AWFUL food I experienced there was no question or apology. I had REALLY looked forward to eating here after reading previous reviews but £100 lighter (without tip) for 2 courses (half of which was inedible)… it’s our first and LAST visit. Deeply disappointed. Tips… Order the crab pot Order the muscles Do NOT order pork chop or sirloin steak We didn’t try dessert, they sounded yummy but I lost confidence in their ability to deliver - never again!!!!!

Not our first visit by any means. My wife and a friend had between us a salad, the goujons, crab bisque, fish and chips and the burger. Included bottle of wine was a bonus! Most enjoyable! Atmosphere disturbed by a dog constantly banging a bone on the floor, about which its inconsiderate, moronic owner did nothing in spite of ours and people on adjacent tables glares. And no, I don’t hate dogs, far from it, but restaurants are not the places for them.

I've been there a couple of times and always had fantastic experiences,both in food and treatment, especially when the owner is there. Having said that, some friends and I had dinner on Saturday night and the FoH staff was different, maybe new, there were two girls who clearly needed more training. We tried several times to get their attention to order, failing to do so. We had to wait good 20-25 minutes to get our mains (4 burgers). They could have sent mains away while the other were still on their starters because that's the only thing they were having. Not a single check if the food was okay. I always tip well but I hate the idea of having the service "forced" into my bill, specially when I feel the service tonight has not been brilliant at all. I've paid it though, for previous times and because the food was tasty. Innocent and genuine recommendation: perhaps if you could, close the kitchen door to the restaurant because it gets smokey and my hair smells of chips now

Being just over the road from daughter's new flat in Kemptown it seemed a good idea to try out this local eatery for a weekday evening meal. It proved to be a good choice for our party of 7 plus dogs. The menu is fairly limited, which I always take to be a good sign as freshness is the key. We were told that there was only one fish and chips left on arrival which my wife snaffled. This turned out to be an outstanding choice and she declared it to be the best fish and chips she'd ever had! Most of the rest of the family opted for burgers in various guises and all were wolfed down approvingly. The youngest, however, went for a steak - similar prices to our local gastropub near Lancaster, so expensive, but far from outrageous. He enjoyed it immensely. Nobody wanted a starter, which disappointed me, as the starters looked much more tempting than the desserts. That said, everyone seemed to enjoy their sticky toffee puddings and brownies. I went for a cheeseboard which was perfectly fine, although I'd have preferred a nice sticky chutney than the beetroot it came with, and maybe a celery stick, too. Its not the cheapest venue, but everything is cooked fresh to order and the ingredients are high quality. Service is relaxed and the beer well kept. Worth seeking out if you are in the area. Apparently their Sunday roasts are special so next time I'm in Brighton I'll have to make sure it's over a weekend.

Another great Sunday lunch at B&W. We all enjoyed our choices everything was delicious. The staff were really friendly and attentive. Brilliant selection of bottled ales and the desserts were to die for! Thank you.

Excellent gastropub - hidden gem. Wonderful well prepared local produce in some of the best food you've ever tasted in a pub. The beef ragu was amazing. Good range of drinks also leaning on local suppliers. Well worth searching out. The place to eat in kemptown bar none.

B&W was recommended to us when we got chatting to some locals. We tracked it down one morning and checked the menu. A visit had and certainly not disappointed. We both had fish and chips. The chips were huge, home cut monsters, perfectly cooked and worth every bite. There appeared to be only one person serving as we got there shortly after they opened. We had dog in tow and welcomed in. We thought we would have to sit outside but no, dogs allowed inside. Order taken quickly and food arrived in record time. A big portion of fish (excuse the photo - it really was fish), lovely crispy batter, mushy peas and a tangy tartare sauce. A very friendly atmosphere. Seemed like lots of repeated customers dropping in for food and/or drinks while we were there. A very nice visit. We walked as we didn't notice any parking nearby on our recon in the morning, but worth the stroll.

Roasts on Sundays are always amazing. And I’ve just had a very tasty fish and chips. Highly recommend this delicious spot.

What a wonderful place to eat. Food was absolutely scrumptious, the roast lamb just melted in your mouth, roast potatoes were lovely and crispy, veg perfect, condiments superb, loved the 🍨. Would definitely go back again next we're in Brighton.

Went here on a whim and we were impressed. The downstairs bar is lively and well laid out, but most impressed by the restaurant upstairs. Watch out Lion and Lobster, Walrus has a lovely service team, good food and the emphasis on home style food and good portions is right. We loved the skate and chicken cordon blue. Will return.

We were in Brighton for only one night and this restaurant was mentioned in one of the brochures in our hotel room, and we decided to go. Wow, what a great place! So cozy with all the dark colours, and the decoration is so detailed! Very very nice. I ordered a Caesar salad, bit bland to be honest, but the location made up for it ;-).

The portions was small for the prices. I visited twice and first was horrrible ever but the second time was better. Hopefully gonna be better more carefull more quality.

Lacklustre best sums it up A group of us arrived for an early dinner. we were shown to a corner table by the door. The menu wasn't huge. Fish, Burgers or veggie. Our server wasn't interested in us, or our order. Burgers were undercooked. Chips tasted like reconstituted variants - but weren't. To explain they were like powder. Possibly heated then reheated. There were no sauces offered. when we asked our server gave us a choice of mustard or mustard. One of our group complained because the food was not warm. We paid, left and won't be returning. Such a shame. Its round the corner for me. was much better when the owners were working the venue.

Probably the Best Sunday lunch in Brighton (I only went on sundays) Lots of regulars. I love it when the cook is there, she's friendly, bubbly and talented.. The atmosphere changes as soon as she walks in, out of the kitchen..

Four of us for dinner on the reopening night: we enjoyed notably good steaks, fish snd chips, and halloumi and chips - all totally delicious! Service is the same as always - friendly and efficient and we had a really first class evening. Recommended.

I first visited Busby & Wilds many years ago and it was great. I left a good review as I felt it was very deserved. However since then I recently visited in December and again this weekend and have to say how poor the service has been on both occasions by the front of house staff. We were made to feel both times that we were an inconvenience and any questions we asked or made were obviously not welcomed.In December it was just myself and my husband and this weekend we were part of a larger group. Both front of house members of staff need training on customer service , from simple things like smiling, to answering diners queries about the menu with more than 1 word answers! We definitely won't be eating here again, very disappointed.

This is such a find, admittedly, we've been going there since it first opened. The Sunday Lunch is great. They have also got a takeaway service for snacks such as beer-battered fish, goujons, chips, mushy peas, coleslaw, and various sauces. What we love about their takeaway is it's clean-tasting, fresh and all homemade, massive difference to other takeaways. We're thinking, why get your fish and chips from anywhere else? Even the Tartar Sauce is homemade and hasn't got that nasty packaged sugary taste. The coleslaw is also outstanding

I went with my family on a Sunday after the Brighton Half Marathon as a last minute decision, to which they were able to accommodate, and given how busy it was this was very much appreciated/ we were lucky. We had some drinks at the bar as we arrived early, and waited for our table. We all ordered the veggie option roast dinner. The service was ok, but nothing to write home about. It seems as though this is an on going problem looking at the other reviews. The roasts came up after about 45mins, during this time we ordered some sourdough for the wait. This came with balsamic vinegar and oil and was fine. The beer list is very nice indeed, lots of European and Belgian beers. A good selection. The roasts came at last- 4 glorious nut roasts, hazlenut almond and walnut if I remember correctly. They each had lovely crispy roast potatoes, and a huge delicious Yorkshire pudding which was perfectly crispy and also doughy at the bottom. The veg then came in a separate bowl, it was parsnips in whole grain mustard, cabbage, roasted carrots, cauliflower cheese which was to die for and a purée which was orange so I’d guess it was sweet potato or carrot and swede. It was truly tasty. I personally think we could have done with more veg, reading previous reviews if you ask you can have some so we should have asked. We did however ask for more gravy and sauces, the horseradish was to die for- perfectly creamy and a bit tart, really delicious. On the whole the roast was very well seasoned, and very tasty. I’d give it 10/10, The review as a whole loses marks on wait time and service. As we were sat there other people came in off the street as walk ins so I can only assume they weren’t that busy or fully booked at that time. So service should have been more attentive, and wait time reduced but on this occasion it was quite nice to wait and chat.

Visited in 2018 for Sunday roasts and then again just recently. Still top marks. A bit more pricey than the average pub roast, but then you can taste the quality. Go. Just remember to book in advance.

Solo quería agradecerles por un almuerzo tan maravilloso el domingo (15/12/2016). Nunca había estado antes, pero me sorprendió gratamente. La comida era deliciosa y perfectamente preparada. Las croquetas de Brie con naranja y nuez fueron el comienzo perfecto. El personal no podría haber sido más servicial y eficiente con un ambiente encantador en general. Volveré ! (Mientras tanto, ¡feliz Navidad!).

Habiendo comido aquí muchas veces, este fue nuestro primer almuerzo del domingo y no nos decepcionó, la comida era fabulosa y el personal era muy tranquilo, aunque estaba lleno, estuvieron atentos durante todoNo tuvimos entrantes que todo parecía maravilloso en lugar de ahorrar espacio para los postres. Todos teníamos el cordero que se derritió en la boca o la panceta de cerdo con los adornos. Recomiendo encarecidamente el pudín de caramelo pegajoso para después.En general, lo pasamos muy bien, recomendaría encarecidamente a Busby and Wilds, ya sea para el almuerzo del domingo o la comida en cualquier momento, no se sentirá decepcionado por el talentoso personal de cocina o el maravilloso frente de la casa.

We were recommended Busby by a friend who said they did the best Sunday roast Brighton... Food and drinks great, service good and atmosphere good.

After failing to make it then Thursday night because of the weather to go there on mod-Friday afternoon We were the only ones there but could not have been made more welcome.

Had a lovely meal again at Busby and Wilds. Booked for 6pm and our table was reserved when we go there. Nice wines, peppered squid to die for and a great choice of mains. Only wish we had time for the puds as they all looked gorgeous!

This is our local pub to our holiday home, we love the food here it’s lush. Also bonus as we can take our doggies in with us!

We were here for an early dinner before seeing a show at the Spire arts center across the street. And so it was quiet at about 6pm on a Saturday night, but the staff were friendly and welcoming. Also very obliging as we started sitting outside but changed our minds when the temperature dropped. No problem at all, they happily moved us to a table inside.

We came here for a Sunday lunch, having eaten here before. The staff are friendly but it took almost 3 hours to be served two courses. I had the roast beef cooked medium, it was very thinly sliced and rather tough and tasteless. The vegetable serving wasn't exactly generous. It was OK, but overall I was disappointed (especially for the price) and thought the standards had gone downhill from last time. I can see from tripadviser that the owner is prone to posting aggressive and sarcastic responses to reviews, but I'd urge her to take this as constructive feedback as there is a fair amount of competition in Brighton and at the moment there are better places to eat Sunday lunch in Kemptown.

We were seated immediately (having booked) but our table by the door wasn’t that great for one of our party who was disabled (she kept on having to get up to let people out).

Most of our party liked their food which was good and not spectacular. However, this blandly decorated restaurant lacks atmosphere and is definitely somewhere to go with a group. Our waitress was not warm or smiley which also didn't help.

I had the most delicious fish and chips, with really crispy batter and fresh fish and the chunky chips were lovely.

Although the food was fine, we were very disappointed with our visit to this restaurant. Service was very slow, to the point where we had to go to the desk and ask for someone to come to our table (three times). After two and a quarter hours we had still only had the main course. Went and asked for someone to take our pudding order and menus were brought and then again we were just left for ages. In the end we decided to leave and told them why. No apology and they really didn't seem bothered. There were several serving staff and the room really wasn't that busy. We won't be going there again.

did'nt like it at all,the weather was hot but we had to wait nearly an hour for the food which was poor quality when it finally arrived but expensive, the waiteress was short / rude we didnt leave a tip as we felt we'd already overpaid

On a busy day it was off the beaten track so looked like mainly locals. We sat in the garden with drinks and had a main meal. Most had the mackerel dish which was loved, I picked the gluten free fish and chips which was fabulous.

Vino a almorzar con mi quisquilloso papá, que es difícil de complacer. Él tenía el filete de solomillo y yo tenía la tabla de quesos. El filete fue cocinado a mis papás por petición y gusto. La selección de queso era genial, pero preferiría mucho más con pan de masa que galletas de queso. Tenía el pudding de caramelo pegajoso para el desierto que estaba delicioso. Buen vino Sólo la crítica es cara y quería pan en lugar de galletas con el queso. El servicio era bueno.

Bueno, qué sorpresa total encontrar este lugar y es un tiro de piedra de donde vivimos.

Celebramos nuestra boda aquí hace unos días. No puedo recomendarlo lo suficiente. Simon y Emily eran muy tranquilos y complacientes con todo lo que queríamos. El menú era encantador y muchos invitados comentaron sobre lo buena que era la comida. El pudín de toffee pegajoso es para morirse! Todo el personal trabajó muy duro para que funcionara sin problemas.

Tuvimos un almuerzo de domingo aquí. La comida era de buena calidad, pero las raciones eran pequeñas. No mucho veg o carne - los dos ingredientes principales de un almuerzo de domingo. El servicio era bueno, pedí más repollo y se lo agradecieron. En general un poco decepcionante. Recientemente comí en el Cat Inn en West Hoathly, que era excelente: excelente servicio, muchas verduras frescas, porciones generosas de carne bien cocida y un precio similar. - Pienso si be & W podría aprender de su enfoque.

Hi. Five of us went there for a meal on Friday night and we all found the food excellent. Between us we had fish, shepherds pie and burgers and all were very good . We had a very good bottle of French Sauvignon Blanc and I had some beer ( I have forgotten which one ) and it was very good. The staff were very helpful and courteous. We will definitely go the again .

We are fortunate to have friends who live a few minutes walk from Busby & Wilds and they took us there for aSunday roast. We had the lamb and the vegetarian, portion sizes were just right, although I got greedy and had a desert and the combination left me a little stuffed to say the lease. There is a bright contemporary feel to this very busy eatery.

We were a party of 6 for Sunday lunch and all the food was super. It was good quality, fresh and perfect portion sizes. Lovely real ale too. Very nice atmosphere in the restaurant and the staff were very smiley and engaging.

My husband and I enjoyed Sunday lunch at Busby and Wilds whilst in Brighton for the weekend. This is a tradition for us now as there’s nowhere better for a home cooked tasty and well presented roast. The owners are very accommodating and specially made a roast chicken for me despite this dish not being on the menu. My husband also enjoyed the vegetarian roast. All the staff are super friendly and always make us welcome. Thanks again for a fabulous Sunday lunch to all at B&W;.

Visited this restaurant the Sunday before Christmas. Pleasant enough place to eat but what will prevent us from returning was as we paid the bill (which had service added) the waitress ever so nicely added ‘if you wish to add any more for the service please press this button’. Both being in low paid jobs where neither of us are tipped this was enough to put us off any future visit.

Vinimos a almorzar con un grupo de amigos y tuvimos una gran experiencia. El lugar está escondido en el extremo oriental de Rock Street y, como vivimos fuera de Brighton, no habíamos visitado antes. La comida era deliciosa, hay una buena selección de vinos y algunas cervezas buenas y ligeramente diferentes. El servicio fue amigable y eficiente.
