I would only go here to see a play as it is a fairly run of the mill bar and cafe but its very friendly and staff are great. Nice surroundings. It was better before the pandemic

¡Y volveremos!

Visited here around 10pm on a Friday night after dinner at nearby restaurant with group of workmates. Had 2 sips of gin & tonic and left the rest, I asked for Edinburgh Gin which I enjoyed elsewhere earlier, don't know what brand the tonic was but it was disgusting. Foreign barmaid was barely understandable with strong accent and she did not smile or appear at all pleasant or helpful. Didnt stay as long as I'd planned but it is in a handy location.

We arrived to pick up tickets for a nearby afternoon event at The Fringe. We were on the hunt for ,unusually ,a leisurely lunch. We espied the diner in the first floor.A two course lunch with coffee for about £15 in the centre of Edinburgh looked interesting. The diner is very spacious with a really relaxed ambience.Choice of food was excellent ,service prompt and freshly cooked food arrived quickly ,all despite the diner being reasonably busy.Disabled access seemed good. A great lunch with only positive points. The surrounding fast food joints were doing great business ,no doubt for about the same cost.We got the quality anD value.

If you are visiting during the Festival, timing your visit to avoid the queues is essential. I managed to wander in during a quiet period and was served immediately at the bar. There is no separate gluten free menu but the very pleasant member of staff behind the bar was able to guide me through the short food menu to an excellent choice of a feta salad. It was exactly what I wanted - fresh, minty and vegetarian. The WiFi was very erratic but there seemed to be hundreds of people there on phones and tablets. The excellent customer service from the bar staff contrasted with the appalling attitude of the usherettes in the theatre itself - but that’s another story. Queues for theatre performances seriously impact on the space in the bar.

I waited 15 minutes for a cup of tea and only got it because I asked as my breakfast roll was sitting on the table getting cold as I queued. It's a teabag in a cup of water - not difficult! I don't understand how so many fancy coffees were being made before my tea as there only seemed to be one person in front of me in the queue at the bar. I was a lovely cup of tea and a delicious roll but I would have liked it hot. One thing I thought was strange. I was served a filled breakfast roll with a portion of butter on the side in a basket. Was I meant to take the bacon and fried egg out to butter the roll? Bearing in mind it wasn't served on a plate.

Went to see a US band called Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellies. Great gig. Able to find good seating. Easy to get to bar, toilets etc. It was obvious that this place likes to host great gigs on a regular basis.

The atmosphere is great in this subterranean space below the theatre. The music was mixed, some really good folk, some rather poor and some not folk at all. I queued for maybe quater of an hour while the 2 admirable women behind the bar calmly served far too big crowds for the staffing available. And I’m learning that getting dry cider in Edinburgh is near impossible! So a rather mixed night.

Bar staff only so-so but hampered by total incompetence of kitchen. Order for a burger and a pasta (having been told nachos unavailable because they had no chips?!) a total mess. Pasta arrived in 5 mins, no burger. Had to chase w/ bar staff for 20 mins. Excuse was "sorry, very busy". Yes, it is Festival so perhaps time to put more than two people in kitchen? Offer to put things right resulted in offer of a single espresso (company policy not to offer free alcohol, one can see why). Which they brought before the burger had (finally) arrived! Would definitely recommend avoiding this as a venue for anything but a drink!

Two of us ordered 'beef and cheese' burgers with chips. It was late afternoon and the cafe bar was very quiet. It took over 30 minutes for the meals to arrive, while we watched other diners' food arrive one plate at a time... We did eventually ask the server when our meals would arrive, and he apologised and offered drinks, but the meals were still very slow to arrive. When they came out (one at a time) the second had only 7 or 8 chips on the plate, a poor comparison with the reasonable amount on the first plate. We asked the server if he felt this was acceptable, so he returned to the kitchen and brought out a small bowl containing a few chips which were "all that he could find in the kitchen". We said that we were unimpressed with what the kitchen had produced and the wait time, and he said that he would pass on our dissatisfaction. The burgers were also unimpressive despite being large. They had an overwhelming taste of rosemary and the texture was like that of low quality sausage meat - gloopy and cheap-tasting. The bulk of each was left on the plate. Finally, the cheese was melted onto the bun, so the taste was lost. The manageress' only involvement was to let us know that our meals would be out in two minutes. They weren't. She didn't come over later to check if the food had arrived or if we were happy. We weren't. She did not respond to any comments that the server said he would pass on. Definitely won't be back.

I used to come in here quite a lot but then stopped for no definable reason. The main reason I chose the Traverse Bar Cafe in the first place was to get away from the rampant fakery which is rapidly dominating the pub scene in Edinburgh and to get away from tourists. This place was the antidote to all that and it decent prices and menus too (though the Festival menu they forced on us was a load of balls and I hated it). In the past year I have only been back twice and I must say I am not keen on this "a pie, a play, and a pint" crap that they are promoting now. This seems like a very dated, disrespectful, and dumb way to generate business. Pushing this underclass fad onto us by tying it to art and expression is completely incongruous. Some might consider the decor to be cold and unwelcoming, but I've never had a problem with the "naked ceiling", I think it's quite original. Seating is usually comfortable, service is usually good, and there's plenty of posters on the wall to draw your attention. The noise level has never been intolerable and it is a nice place to have a conversation with people. It won't be to everyone's taste but it is a nice alternative if you are sick of the local pub scene.

We had 40 mins to get some food before a performance. We ordered a fries with mayonnaise, two ploughman's platters and a prawn salad. Despite the fact that three of the dishes were ready assembled in plastic boxes, it took 30 minutes for the food to be ready, and there were only two orders ahead of us in a quiet bar. The food was horrible, apart from the chips. The salad was limp and unseasoned and the ploughman's had inedible, rubbery tasteless cheese that tasted of nothing, some horrible pate and soggy oatcakes underneath.Terrible and it cost £20!

Nice atmosphere, drinks fine, nice staff etc but the food was just edible. The Caribbean stew tasted like a student had just learned to cook....overly spiced....and the freshly cooked rice like microwaved boil in the bag, piping hot and bouncy.Go somewhere else to eat, seriously.

I had the misfortune to choose the bar café as a meeting place for a pre-dinner drink. As soon as I went in, I was met with smoky fumes from the kitchen that smelt like a greasy spoon café. I would have left immediately but had friends joining me so went to the bar for a soft drink. I asked for an Appletise and was charged £3.25. A total rip-off and utter greed. I had been in a restaurant the night before and had an Appletise for £2.20 and they made a good profit from that, so £3.25 is outrageous. Needless to say I won't be back and will be letting everyone I know how smelly, dingy and overpriced it is.There are hundreds of bar/restaurants in Edinburgh a 100 times better and cheaper than this dive, so why anyone uses this place beats me. Even if you're going to the theatre, there are much nicer nearby pubs a few hundred yards away.

We came for a couple of glasses of wine before the concert (part of the Edinburgh Festival) and the lady serving us was very attentive - no problem there. Unfortunately we could not find a seat as the place was packed but then what do you expect before a concert as well as a theatre play? Not bad at all.

Went for drinks prior to attending show at Usher Hall next door. Disinterested bar staff. No "house" gin available so was given alternative at same price (fair enough). Asked for glass of cold water. On looking at receipt afterwards, discovered I had been charged £1.20 for "Gls Still Water" - this was a small glass of iced water which the barmaid watched me down to quench my thirst before carrying my proper drinks to the table. Rip-off!

I was recently at a function in the downstairs bar at the theatre and I would definitely not go back. They have the most sullen bar staff, the prices are extortionate and the food they laid on for us was embarrassing. If you're coming to the theatre for a show, go to one of the many nice bars and/or restaurants in the locale instead.

We've been going to fringe festival plays at the traverse for nearly 20 years. Often we've enjoyed the food on offer in the cafe. Sadly it's gone downhill. The menu is still in the 1990s. Come on, Traverse, you can do better than this. How about some lovely Lebanese dishes? How about some delicious and healthy superfood salads? Baked potatoes with prawns in that foul Marie Rose sauce? That's not a good dish to offer in the second decade of the 21st century!!

The queues for the theatre can snake past the bar tables, but there's a semi-screened area at the back with three little booths that offer a more sheltered place to eat. I sat in one and enjoyed a really tasty onion soup... Thick and savoury, with a large crouton on top as you'd expect. It was just right.. Better than a burger or sandwich, and just enough to let me enjoy the show I had come to see. You might also time it so as to avoid any crowds, just after the theatre fills. This place could be a handy option!

Went here for lunch today with my husband and our little girl. Asked for a highchair which was provided but we had to get baby wipes out and clean it all before we could put her in it as it was disgusting. We had ordered a burger and a baked potato with cheese and beans - hard to get wrong you'd think. When food arrived I went to eat baked potato I found it was all black and bad inside. Now I know that this can sometimes happen with a potato but unless the chef cut it open and put the cheese and beans in with their eyes shut there is no way they could have missed that the potato was rotten. Appalling to send this out the kitchen. I took it back and didnt order anything else as I had lost my appetite. Burger was average. Certainly won't return here. Yuk!
