We were staying in Grasmere and headed here on our first night. It was very expensive, the starters were tiny for the money and our mains were tasteless. To top it off they charged us 95p for a tiny slice of sourdough! Making the small starter £9! The pub did feel cosy but definitely wouldn’t recommend for food.

I’m leaving this review after a fantastic week in the lakes …. This was my only gripe of the week after everywhere we visited was very hospitable…. Called into this pub after hiking for a pint with my wife only to be spat at by the dark haired bar lady with a “No” we hadn’t even asked a question for dinner !!!! Completely embarrassing me in front of other customers. She was so rude that we walked out in a bit of shock yes I understand that it was busy half term Sunday but to be greeted in the first instance like that is very poor customer service. Suffice to say we will not be returning. Shame because the atmosphere seemed really nice.

Having just enjoyed a journey along the West Side of Thirlmere, we were in need of refreshment and recalled passing the Traveller's Rest man times on the A591 just West of Grasmere. We stopped for a drink and possible snack, but in entry were warmly greeted and invited to stop for Sunday lunch. Seemed a great idea and we agreed. They had a remarkable dining room and super food including a proper excellent Yorkshire Pudding. Excellent service, would stop again if passing and can recommend it to all passing hungry or thirsty travellers.

Really good food, not too many options on the menu as all area home-cooked. The lamb hot-pot was fantastic, as was the fish and chips - as close to what I make at home as I've ever had. The venison burger, which wasn't quite as good as it could be (salty), is being replaced with their own beefburger soon so will be well worth ordering. Nice service, dog friendly, open reasonably late. Well worth travelling a little further to, we travelled about 10 miles to go here as far better than anywhere where we were staying, but only slightly more expensive - F&C was £18 I think, but bear in mind the Lake District isn't cheap generally.

Worth going the pretty way between South Lakes & Scotland for the views and the grub. Avoiding peak times enables avoiding the M6 and enjoying the spectacular scenery around this unspoilt traditional pub. The food is excellent. For travellers brought up around British centres of curry excellence, the dhal platter had the perfect mix of elements & flavours. The fish & chips were for the connoisseur. Portions are proper Northern generous too.

I have reviewed this pub before. Since that time a few minor changes have been applied. The overall experience is still very good. The menu has slid more to the Gastro than the pub aspect. Nonetheless well worth a visit if you want a good pint or a cider. We had the lamb hotpot and the Brisket filled steak and kidney pudding. The lamb hotpot (Just under £22) was rich, delicious and filling. The slow-cooked Brisket Beef and kidney pudding (Just under £18) was made with a fairly thick but not heavy suet case. Some may prefer a thinner casing but this worked well with the melting pieces of beef and chunks of kidney. I loved it. The chips were home made, chunky and fitted in with the puddig well alone or mopping up gravy! A couple of excellent pints of Wainwright washed it all down. Staff were charming and helpful from the phone booking till the reasonably priced bill. The venue itself is difficult to miss on Dunmail Raise LA229RR just on the hill outside Grasmere towards Keswick on the main road. Parking and outside tables. I shall return

Another 10 minutes and the cutlery etc arrived. At this point we were thinking the meal would be presented momentarily, nope! Having asked on two occasions, where the food was, we were given complementary drinks, in all we waited an hour for the food and were about to leave when it finally arrived.Whilst this was quite frustrating, the food was absolutely delicious, hats off to the chef, Fortunately this made good the unexplained delay in its arrival.Having said that, not sure I would return for fear of another long long wait for the food..,

Visited the Travelers Rest as we always do when in Grasmere and unfortunately a lot has changed and not for the better. As you will see from previous reviews, we have always enjoyed eating here but this was like a different restaurant in feel, look and overall experience. Not sure if this is due to them being bought by a chain as I noticed new branding on the bottom of the menu which had also changed beyond recognition. Suffice to say, food OK, tables sticky and service apologetic but terrible. We only ordered main courses which took nearly an hour to arrive. We had to ask three times where our drinks were which eventually arrived 25 minutes after we ordered then. We had actually booked for two meals but on the basis of the Saturday experience cancelled our Weds booking. A real shame as the Travelers Rest used to be one of the culinary highlights of our trips to Grasmere.

My daughter and I booked two nights in July 2021 for a tour of the lakes, never been before. We were greeted by Gareth a fabulous manager, very friendly and professional, he gave us lots of information and was courteous and attentive at all times. Our room was lovely, great view and nice and clean. However it was boiling hot all night! We had dinner in the restaurant and again Gareth was fabulous however the older gentleman serving didn’t crack a smile once and I felt like I was bothering him when I asked for a drink! We were the only ones eating in the restaurant that evening, the food was excellent but the tables were sticky and the menus could also do with a wipe! I went for the moules which were hot and tasty. Then I went for the pork belly as a special with black pudding bon bons (a bit deep fried) but very good. I felt that the only time the older gent smiled was when I was paying the bill (almost as if he was waiting for his tip) he didn’t get a tip instead Gareth got the tip! Our twin room was lovely, a bit cramped but that’s ok it was clean and comfy but just so boiling and no fans around. Breakfast was again superb. Poor Sam was on his own tending to us all and did a very good job looking after us, he apologised there was a slight delay and that really didn’t bother us at all. He again was informative about local sights and things to do which we took on board. Many thanks! Overall a lovely stay but I must say the second evening we cancelled dinner and opted for a different pub for our meal which had a lot more atmosphere and more diners. I wouldn’t say it was great value for money. We paid £288 Quite pricey for two nights with brekkie which was a fair bit more than our next hotel stay which was cooler, cleaner and included breakfast.

There was only one chef on the first time and as a result our meal took a long time to arrive but hey - the staff were great keeping us informed, offered us extras to compensate and when the fish and chips finally arrived they were incredibly good!! None of the timing problems on the second visit but friendly good- humoured service, good food and generous portion sizes. First night of our 'staycation' in The Lakes. Tried the Travellers Rest, despite some reservations from reading reviews, it was our nearest pub so thought we would give it a try! Can't be that bad, can it? WRONG!The signs were there early on - tried to sign in on the Covid log - No Pen! Tried to sanitise our hands - Empty! We had made a reservation so gave our name only to be told, 'someone has given your table away'! 'Just sit there', (points towards a table in bar). This was 7pm - by 7:30 we still didn't have a drink or food. Eventually, we got drinks - order was wrong. Eventually we got food, which was ok although not very warm. Asked for bill, got the wrong bill. Exit stage left asap never to darken its doors again. We were not the only one's to suffer I witnessed nearby tables waiting a long time for drinks/food and being brought wrong orders etc.As a footnote: The hospitality industry has whined on throughout the pandemic about how they are struggling with only being allowed to have up to 40% capacity - on tonight's performance this place couldn't handle 100% capacity. They should be ashamed to call themselves a 'hospitality' venue.A quick word on our server who (bless him) was working so hard and constantly apologising to everyone. We felt sorry for him, it looked like he was covering the bar, the restaurant and outside too all by himelf.

We spent a very pleasant evening at the Travellers Rest eating one of our first ‘indoor’ meals. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful, professional and friendly. The food, hubby had the steak and kidney pudding, I had the chicken wrapped in Parma ham was both delicious and very well presented. The sticky toffee pudding, is to die for. We had a lovely evening and would highly recommend it.

After stopping by for a coffee after a walk, we pulled into the car park and parked up. There was a sign saying to wait until served however nobody arrived to serve us so we sat down in an available table. A staff member then walked past without a greeting or a look of acknowledgement. The staff member then came round and rudely asked us to move our car. This was absolutely no problem however the staff member then talked loudly and rudely about me next to my partner as I went to move the car. The staff member then continued to be unbelievably rude and obnoxious throughout. Our drinks order of a coffee and coke was taken but took an absolute age to arrive as the staff member was more interested in telling the outside area his life story. I would not attend again and I would not recommend.

The Inn was easy to find we had booked 2 dog rooms, we arrived early and was met by a staff member who told us to wait as he had to go to one of the holiday let’s down the the road. He came back after 15mins as we were early we ordered dinner which was good. We were told one room was ready and the other was having some painting done and would be ready for 3pm as we had arrived early. We returned at 3pm checked in given the keys, on entering our room well we were gob smacked the bed had been left pulled away from the wall dust everywhere from the rubbing down so we set about cleaning up as not to cause a fuss. The room was small room 9 especially as we had 2 dogs. The rest of the place and our other room 7 was great everything you could want, the staff were excellent (Gareth/Vicky) especially. The food was first class could not fault it we ate there every day it was that good even Christmas dinner although a bit rushed between courses. The Inn was full all over Christmas mainly with dog lovers which was nice. Apart from a little hiccup at the start it was brill.

Cena realmente sabrosa. Personal amable y servicial.

Booked a table for two here, on arrival was shown to a table but had to wait 15mins for staff to come to take our drinks order and then the food, waited a further 10 mins for drinks to arrive followed by a further 5mins before the first course. ( as there were only two staff front of house we may have caught them at a bad time 8-00pm )Food was generally good , and the draught bitter was extremely drinkable.Very safe and Covid19 secure.Visit spoiled by the poor service but happy to give "the Travellers" another go when next we visit

Ate here during the pandemic. Everything was well organised and felt safe. Its dog friendly. Food was good (scampi and chips) and its a good alternative if you are visiting Grasmere as its away from the village.

Era nuestra primera vez en Lake's and the Travellers Rest y no puedo decir que me apresure a regresar pronto.

We had called earlier in the week for a drink and found the staff to be very friendly along with a great selection of beers and gin (what more could you ask for!) so decided to book for an evening meal. The food and service at the Travellers Rest this evening was excellent, A good choice of perfectly cooked food and the staff, although being very busy kept us informed and were very professional. We certainly wouldn't hesitate to eat here again.

Barmaid wanted £36. I said, "£36 for two puddings and a pint and a half?" She immediately reconsidered. "It's £29.50.". She printed me a receipt and said, "You asked for extra custard. Life isn't free, sir." I had indeed asked for extra custard, for which I had only been charged a pound. But obviously, people who query bar bills in the Lakes are regarded as the lowest form of scroungers.

Tempted by window display. No prices displayed, shocked at prices. Asked if I wanted vegan sausage roll warmed. Outside was warm, middle stone cold. Stodgy, salty filling. Would have preferred a Greggs. Over priced and disappointing 😞
