We visited as a group of 7 adults and a baby as an anniversary for our late friends birthday. My baby wasn’t booked in but as there were childcare issues, I had to bring her along. When we arrived for our booking, I said we had my daughter and the waitress said “there isn’t room” (as if I was going to leave her in the car!) I said it was fine and that as long as we had a high chair, she could sit alongside me and wouldn’t take up any room - which she didn’t. Apparently we’d been seated on a table that was too small anyway and this would make the situation worse. I said it didn’t matter and we were all happy. And then I was told “you’ll have to sit there and keep this aisle clear as I need to get through” by the waitress. Which I was doing anyway. Basically, I felt told off before I’d even looked at the menu. This isn’t the first time I’ve visited the Strickland arms. The last time, we booked in a baby and they sat us upstairs which meant I had to carry the pram with a 2.5wk old baby in upstairs whilst the staff just stood back and let me. Apart from that, the food was very good and the prices are reasonable. I just wish the waitress was a bit more understanding!

Not the place to go if you are vegetarian. Expensive, poor value for money and lacked nutrition. 2 chick peas are supposed to provide the protein equivalent of other non - vegetarian choices? Think not.

We met friends there last night, we walked in & I said to the guy, we’re meeting friends here, he replied “that’ll be round here then” and left us to it, not very welcoming at all. I had the cheese pie…it was ok but only came with a small salad. All 4 mains were £17 plus and didn’t come with much else! The place emptied very quickly and we were the only ones left in the part we were in & they stared moving the tables around (for breakfast?) All in all very mediocre and not worth £100 & odd pounds (no starters, 4 mains, 1 pudding, 2 soft drinks. 1 coffee & 5 pints of beer)

This was my first visit to the pub, I visited with my wife for an overnight stop, it's a lovely period building with all of the things inside that I like to see in a country pub. It's in a beautiful village and the clientele were a right mix. The menu is extensive making it difficult to decide, however, we both chose a pie. It takes a little longer to arrive but they're cooked fresh, my word they were amazing ! We were staying at the premises in one of the log buildings built during lock down, the shepherd's hut. The bed was really comfortable and the shower was fab in the morning. You're asked to choose the breakfast the night before which I personally really liked the idea of. My cooked breakfast was fabulous, cooked perfectly from locally sourced ingredients. As a cyclist this is an intriguing pub and Anton spent some time quite rightly proudly showing me some items in the premises, a fascinating man, a gentleman and a great host. He and Penny and the staff are a great team we will definitely return.

Always a friendly welcome. Very popular so it’s best to book but they’ll fit you in if they can. Good choice on the menu. Specials on the board. The pie of the week is popular with my husband as is the bacon chop with egg and pineapple. I had one of the specials tonight which was chicken dhansak with mango chutney and papadums which was delicious. There is additional seating upstairs and if the weather is kind a large beer garden. Plenty of free parking both in the pub car park but also loads of parking on the wide quiet road which The Strick is located on, the road mainly leads to Sizergh Castle and the back entrance to Sizergh Barn.

Have eaten here several times when we have been walking near Kendal, but not been in the area for the last few years. We have always really enjoyed the food & the draft beer. Luckily we were in the area this week & booked a table for Tuesday night. It was great to see that the standard of food & drink was as good as ever. Both our dishes were imaginative & top quality. As the place was full on a Tuesday night it suggested that it's popularity was shared by others. On top of this the staff were lovely & coped well with a full restaurant. Good to see that some places can be relied upon to consistently deliver quality

What an excellent place to eat! The service is exceptionally good - we were made to feel welcome from the first moment. Our dog was welcome - she lay quietly by the table. We both chose the lamb and mint pies. SO good! Clearly hand-made pies with tasty crusts all around the meet-filled pie. Even the chips were good in their own right. We are insulted but the garden looked good with areas of shade and sunlight (it was hot when we were there so shade counts). Plenty of parking in the car park and on the road. Located right next to the entrance to Sizergh Castle (National Trust), it’s very convenient before or after a visit.

Food was of the highest quality and good value for money. The service was very efficient and made it a pleasurable experience. However, it was all spoilt to some extent by the amount of dogs allowed into the area where we were eating and one dog (smallest of course) was very verbal. When are restaurants going to wake up to the fact that we are not all happy eating with dogs present? Why do the owners feel the need to fetch them along? Perhaps, like years ago when we had smoking and non smoking areas in restaurants, we now have dogs and no dog areas?

Food was lovely, although the pie had limited filling. Generous portions especially for the children, and the people serving the tables were very friendly. Unfortunately, they were a little let down when, as we were getting ready to leave, one man who worked there started repeating the f word to one of his staff for making a mistake and called them a 'moron' and 'khead' Well within hearing distance to me and other customers. A stunning property from the outside, with amazing views, however the inside is very disappointing. It's really starting to annoy us how many National Trust properties are not allowing you to view the upstairs of them, blaming short staffing issues since COVID. This is totally unacceptable and not providing a good feel of the properties, many have the best views from the first/second floors. There wasn't any furniture, rugs or nice decor to experience just how splendid this place was. The atmosphere really was awful! Maybe they are about to start work on this, I don't know🤷♂️ Joey's cafe was a welcome stop, but everything was only just ok and the prices were higher than average. I have experienced much nicer food/coffee in most other National Trust cafes. That said, it's well worth doing off on your walk to enjoy the outside and views 😁

Andy, Mandy, and our twins, Mabel and Layla, embarked on a culinary adventure at the Strickland Arms this evening. Saturday 10th February 2024, where the warm reception extended not only to the family but also to our dog Primrose, creating an atmosphere of genuine hospitality. The young chap who served us, was exceptional politeness, articulation, and unwaveringly attentive. The food was impressive and Michelin star standard. The fish and chips, a symbol of freshness, were accompanied by homemade mushy peas and tartar sauce that arguably stood out as the finest. Mandy savoured the pork medallions, a symphony of flavours, while the children indulged in the equally delightful lamb hot pot, showcasing the culinary finesse of the chef and the entire kitchen team. Dessert proved to be an enchanting finale, with the sticky toffee pudding reaching perfection with my personal highlight—the deconstructed cheesecake—earning a distinguished place in his top 3 desserts of all time. Strickland Arms emerged not just as a pub, but a haven of friendliness, where well-trained staff elevated the dining experience. It's a culinary gem that shines brightly among others, beckoning locals and passersby to savour the excellence crafted by a chef and team at the pinnacle of their game. Well done guys, outstanding. Popular country pub that offers a traditional menu in a comfortable dining area. We had pie of the day which was turkey and cranberry. It was tasty but a bit pastry heavy. The small fish and chips was a good size so don't choose large unless you have the appetite to match. Although I didn't feel like the initial mine host was very enthusiastic about us arriving without a prior booking the waiting staff were extremely friendly and helpful, even noting my plea for large mushy peas with the small fish. The pub filled up during our meal and lots of people seemed to know the staff which gave it a friendly local vibe without making visitors feel uncomfortable. We had booked 5 rooms through Booking.com well in advance and when we arrived at 4pm we were told that our booking had been cancelled (Booking.com had taken our money the previous day). This eventually got sorted by Booking .com and we found good alternative accommodation for the night but the way we were treated by staff at the Derby Arms was awful.

First of all, a couple of points to bear in mind for anyone reading this. Although out of control of the P&W, the only parking on street is at a premium and very limited. This was our first visit here and the restaurant itself is quite small and intimate (absolutely nothing wrong with that) and therefore booking a table is a must during a 7/7:30 pm sitting as all tables were occupied. Not certain if the dining room is due to be decorated, but it really could benefit from a lick of paint to update the drab walls which were all totally bereft of any pictures and the only decoration was a tatty plant in a bottle. As a suggestion, perhaps tea lights could add to a current lack of ambiance? The two lads (brothers?) running the dining room were nothing short of polite and attentive (no complaints there), took our orders and did ask if we wanted more drinks regularly. What was a nice touch were the glasses of water with ice and lemon served to us as we were seated. I don't mind paying a premium price if the food is good, but the sharing bread and olives was a tad expensive for just that was, and the rest of the menu was on the steep side too for what was nothing special (sorry P&W) but very nice. We ordered our main meal, but it transpired that the table next to us got it and was eventually taken away from them and an apology given to them and us, which we did accept with no complaint but really shouldn't happen in a small restaurant. We were going to order a sweet, but after seeing the small portion our other 'neighbours' were served (again for the cost), we decided against it. What we should have done was to look on line at the menu and cost - totally the fault was ours but in our defence M'Lord, we had extremely poor internet service! It's often said you don't get a second chance at first impression, which can be somewhat disputed. That said, taking everything into account, I don't think we'd make a return visit but do wish them all the best for the future.
