Strickland Arms in South Lakeland

After a lovely bracing walk it was good to go into a pretty busy pub with a roaring log fire and some interesting specials on the menu. The service was very friendly and we had a nice tasty lunch.

We had the best fish, chips and mushy peas we have ever tasted. Puddings were exquisite also. Polite and friendly staff and good timely service. The pub itself is beautiful, traditional features with an open fire. The locals were so friendly and chatty, we are staying at a cottage for a weekend break. Would highly recommend - be sure to taste the apple crumble and custard!

Never fails to impress. I visit fairly often and love the place. Always a warm witty welcome from Mike and the team. I had the scampi starter, which was delicious, followed by the black and blue burger, also delicious and very filling, the Chips are bang on too. Thanks for another lovely couple of hours. Can confirm both the pie and the Cajun chicken burger are top notch. Sometimes, chicken breast burgers can be quite dry but this one was perfect! Along with that pesto sauce. Absolutely one of the best pub burgers I have eaten hands down.

Roast beef lunch was a disappointment

Having pre-booked a table for 8, we arrived for lunch on a Monday at this popular pub restaurant for what was my first visit. Although a rather grim day, the outside of the building did look quite grey and uninviting but once we stepped inside there was a warm and friendly atmosphere with some great original features. We were shown our table to peruse the menu whilst we watched more guests arrive and fill the remaining tables. The busy staff soon took our drinks and food order but were clearly a bit overwhelmed by how unexpectedly busy it was. I opted for the fish and chips which was huge and beautifully prepared without being too greasy along with hand cut chips which were plentiful. Others in our party had the vegetarian pie and raved about how nice it was. With no room for dessert and having received good service throughout we settled what was a reasonable bill and made our way. Much like our returning friends, I also look forward to re-visiting the Strickland Arms again in the future.

The person I presume to be the manager was so rude and obnoxious I didn’t feel welcome so walked out. Would not recommend!

Pre Christmas lunch. Booked somewhere to take my Aunt out who lives in Kendal as we were passing through. Service was quick and friendly food was tasty and it had a nice feel to it. Thanks 👍

Gorgeous little pup. The food is excellent with all locally sourced meats. They also have an excellent cellar again with local beers and spirits. The couple that run it are so kind and helpful and do an amazing job.

I'm writing this review nearly two months after dining here, yet I still think of this steak and ale pie on a nearly daily basis. It is truly depressing to think about the fact that I will most likely never have the chance to come back here again, and will henceforth live out the rest of my life without ever getting to eat this pie again. Thanks for giving me a new void in my heart that can never be filled, Strickland Arms. If you're thinking about eating their steak and ale pie, I'd honestly say think twice (especially if this is a one-time visit) as it WILL alter your brain chemistry permanently. You have been warned.

Lovely food. Sat by the fire and with a mulled wine let the afternoon drift away finishing with a meal. Service was really quick and very friendly.

Lovely food just a shame we had to wait 45 minutes for it to arrive, they had a large party upstairs which they were serving first, I wish we had been told when we arrived so we could have decided wether to wait or not..

A cozy place and very tasty dishes. I tasted the chicken with wild mushrooms and it was excellent . The dessert Sticky Toffee Pudding is also very delicious. Nice place for dinner with friends.

Booked a table for an evening meal. I had carrabbian chicken & rice from the special board. It was really tasty in a creamy sauce with lots of chicken in it. Yummy. My husband had fish & chips. The batter was a bit thick but the fish was lovely. The service was good, all staff were polite and helpful. It's definitely worth a visit.

Nice traditional "gastro" pub close to walks in the NT Sizergh Castle estate. A good menu, reasonably priced, tasty food.

We visited as a group of 7 adults and a baby as an anniversary for our late friends birthday. My baby wasn’t booked in but as there were childcare issues, I had to bring her along. When we arrived for our booking, I said we had my daughter and the waitress said “there isn’t room” (as if I was going to leave her in the car!) I said it was fine and that as long as we had a high chair, she could sit alongside me and wouldn’t take up any room - which she didn’t. Apparently we’d been seated on a table that was too small anyway and this would make the situation worse. I said it didn’t matter and we were all happy. And then I was told “you’ll have to sit there and keep this aisle clear as I need to get through” by the waitress. Which I was doing anyway. Basically, I felt told off before I’d even looked at the menu. This isn’t the first time I’ve visited the Strickland arms. The last time, we booked in a baby and they sat us upstairs which meant I had to carry the pram with a 2.5wk old baby in upstairs whilst the staff just stood back and let me. Apart from that, the food was very good and the prices are reasonable. I just wish the waitress was a bit more understanding!

Not the place to go if you are vegetarian. Expensive, poor value for money and lacked nutrition. 2 chick peas are supposed to provide the protein equivalent of other non - vegetarian choices? Think not.

We met friends there last night, we walked in & I said to the guy, we’re meeting friends here, he replied “that’ll be round here then” and left us to it, not very welcoming at all. I had the cheese pie…it was ok but only came with a small salad. All 4 mains were £17 plus and didn’t come with much else! The place emptied very quickly and we were the only ones left in the part we were in & they stared moving the tables around (for breakfast?) All in all very mediocre and not worth £100 & odd pounds (no starters, 4 mains, 1 pudding, 2 soft drinks. 1 coffee & 5 pints of beer)

This was my first visit to the pub, I visited with my wife for an overnight stop, it's a lovely period building with all of the things inside that I like to see in a country pub. It's in a beautiful village and the clientele were a right mix. The menu is extensive making it difficult to decide, however, we both chose a pie. It takes a little longer to arrive but they're cooked fresh, my word they were amazing ! We were staying at the premises in one of the log buildings built during lock down, the shepherd's hut. The bed was really comfortable and the shower was fab in the morning. You're asked to choose the breakfast the night before which I personally really liked the idea of. My cooked breakfast was fabulous, cooked perfectly from locally sourced ingredients.As a cyclist this is an intriguing pub and Anton spent some time quite rightly proudly showing me some items in the premises, a fascinating man, a gentleman and a great host. He and Penny and the staff are a great team we will definitely return.

Don’t often eat here but when I do always good. Generally visit as halfway point on walk to /fro Kendal. Brilliant walk scout scar views and river Kent atmosphere. The beer garden and a couple of whatever …perfect. Sociable staff too..so what’s not to like. Used to go into sizergh castle cafe for refreshments on this walk. Save a fortune go the pub,

Could not fault the food or customer service. Tried the curry, it was one of the best ever. The internal decor seems very old, tables and chairs bit of a miss match, not really welcoming, would definitely recommend the food though.

Usually great food but last Friday was a big disappointment for all 4 of us. Staff are always fantastic and live music was good fun. Please keep up the best food standard that you are known for.

Atmosphere of the building was amazing,lots of period charm. Food was tasty but needs to be a bit more simple pub type food. Quite pricey as well and the portions weren't that big. Desert was really nice. Staff were very friendly.

Great spot after a visit to Sizergh Castle (presumably where the name Strickland comes from in the pub name!). Delicious food and would definitely recommend a visit for some lunch.

Very friendly and bustling place. We didn't book but they easily accommodated us. The service was good. It was busy so bit of a wait for food but not too bad. The pie of the day was delicious.

Good beer - Loweswater gold - and friendly staff. Good pub menu with proper cooking and not microwave. Sunday dinner options pork lamb and beef - great vegetable medley, yorkshire with all, and good thick cuts of pork and with crackling.

Im on a restricted diet but the staff made a dish to suit me. I'm Very grateful. Not the least expensive meal but very good in every way.

Excellent meal pie is absolutely amazing

Always a friendly welcome. Very popular so it’s best to book but they’ll fit you in if they can. Good choice on the menu. Specials on the board. The pie of the week is popular with my husband as is the bacon chop with egg and pineapple. I had one of the specials tonight which was chicken dhansak with mango chutney and papadums which was delicious. There is additional seating upstairs and if the weather is kind a large beer garden. Plenty of free parking both in the pub car park but also loads of parking on the wide quiet road which The Strick is located on, the road mainly leads to Sizergh Castle and the back entrance to Sizergh Barn.

Very busy visited in a group of eight. Staff good and not too long for food. We'd been recommended for the food but it was ok rather than good

Disappointing. Expecting a pub with original features, althpugh some exist it is more like a cheap cafe. Wanted to eat but were told we could not order sandwiches though others were ordering food. Beer was good but pricy. Would I recommend. No. Would I come again. No

Very busy pub and a fantastic listed building. Only let down is lack of clarity on the food order and also them not coming checking in for desert etc... we left because they took so long to come back and ask. Still great place to visit recommended.

Have eaten here several times when we have been walking near Kendal, but not been in the area for the last few years. We have always really enjoyed the food & the draft beer. Luckily we were in the area this week & booked a table for Tuesday night. It was great to see that the standard of food & drink was as good as ever. Both our dishes were imaginative & top quality. As the place was full on a Tuesday night it suggested that it's popularity was shared by others. On top of this the staff were lovely & coped well with a full restaurant. Good to see that some places can be relied upon to consistently deliver quality

Fantastic pub, just out of the way enough to feel secluded and private. Great drinks selection, could have stayed here all day.

What an excellent place to eat! The service is exceptionally good - we were made to feel welcome from the first moment. Our dog was welcome - she lay quietly by the table. We both chose the lamb and mint pies. SO good! Clearly hand-made pies with tasty crusts all around the meet-filled pie. Even the chips were good in their own right. We are insulted but the garden looked good with areas of shade and sunlight (it was hot when we were there so shade counts). Plenty of parking in the car park and on the road. Located right next to the entrance to Sizergh Castle (National Trust), it’s very convenient before or after a visit.

Would have given more stars having enjoyed previous visits, but there was no food being served when I went on Monday evening, had to quickly return to my motorhome for beans on toast after a decent pint

Well run and lovely friendly staff

It was a sunny day when I visited this place with my family. The food was exceptional and the same applies to the personnel. We sat outside and it was amazing. Not sure how it will be on a rainy day but if the sun shines Strickland Arms is the place to sit and enjoy drinking and eating.

Food was of the highest quality and good value for money. The service was very efficient and made it a pleasurable experience. However, it was all spoilt to some extent by the amount of dogs allowed into the area where we were eating and one dog (smallest of course) was very verbal. When are restaurants going to wake up to the fact that we are not all happy eating with dogs present? Why do the owners feel the need to fetch them along? Perhaps, like years ago when we had smoking and non smoking areas in restaurants, we now have dogs and no dog areas?

Country pub, serves Guinness, good menu with carried choices. We had game and gooseberry pie, chicken kiev with curried saag aloo.

Found this pub by chance, so glad we did. Food was spot on, game pie was best I've ever had and mash was superb. Fantastic choice of ales. Over 2 hours from my home but going again this Tuesday, so worth it

Second visit here and the welcome was just as warm as last time. Really enjoy the food and atmosphere. Dog friendly too which is a bonus for us.

Very, very, expensive for me. Didn't like the radio music rather listen to soft jazz . Beer was good and selection.. They say it isn't as good as it used to be. But not many pubs are ..

Popped into the Strickland Arms on the off chance they had a table and so glad they did! Overall very welcoming with good service in a real country pub! We all enjoyed a hearty meal of either scampi, lamb hotpot or a GF fish finger sandwich (wish I had gone for the fish and chips as it looked immense!) Located close to the entrance of Sizergh Castle with good sized car park and is dog friendly.

It’s been a while since I’ve left a review for this place. My favourite place for a Sunday roast (and i’ve sampled loads) Staff are always lovely, service is always prompt. really reasonable prices. Great for dogs too.. There’s no option to recommend the starter from the list below but they’re all amazing! Can’t recommend highly enough.

One of the best pubs on the A590 without a doubt. Cracking menu, lovely staff. We phone up to get in on busy nights after being turned away time and time again by other places and the Strickland never lets us down. Top quality, much appreciated, we're locals and we love the Strickland. Get in for some proper food and drink.

Great pub serving lovely homemade food Compelled to leave a review after reading the negative ones and need to readdress the balance. I wonder if the negative reviews are being left to damage the reputation of the pub as the food I have eaten there is really good. We have been there three times recently and enjoyed each of the meals. Please don’t be put off by the negative reviews this is a lovely pub.

Walked in for a table, all be it no booking…. I have never in my life been spoken to so rudely.. just dismissed without the staff member making eye contact. I’m a local person, but will never enter again… very disappointed.

The Strickland arms was a lovely, busy place on Easter Sunday. All the grandkids had a great time playing in the enclosed garden, climbing trees and running around. Although the pub was busy we didn't have to wait long for our food which was lovely! Will definitely call again when we are up that way.

Had a meal here today . Went for the vegan risotto, which was dry and tasteless. Was told my one of the staff that this was vegan and was correct. Horrible meal! Why should vegan food be tasteless? Beggars Belief. I cook vegan food and this is not restaurant quality. Not be going again. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

Called into the Strickland Arms for lunch. Good food and service. Mid-week visit, so not too busy. Sandwich and soup combo was good value for money. Would return.

Food was lovely, although the pie had limited filling. Generous portions especially for the children, and the people serving the tables were very friendly. Unfortunately, they were a little let down when, as we were getting ready to leave, one man who worked there started repeating the f word to one of his staff for making a mistake and called them a 'moron' and 'khead' Well within hearing distance to me and other customers. Understand weekends can be busy and stressful times but thought it totally inappropriate he would call them that and infront of customers. Hope if we go again it will be a different attitude.

Possibly the finest steak pie anywhere. Service has always been very good. Always drop in here for a meal when staying at the local caravan and motorhome club site and always have the steak pie. Coming again at the end of May and cannot wait to return. Better not run out of the steak pie!

Beautiful historical building serves the most delicious Sunday roast ive ever had anywhere. Delicious beef in plentiful amounts and giant yorkshire puds, served with plenty of veg and roast and mash potatoes. Service was fantastic and pleasant. Will certainly be back and highly recommend.

Love it here, we have a group of us that meet here every 6 months. The food is amazing, brilliant atmosphere and good prices. Would highly recommend.

A late mother's day meal, venue and service great, let down by the food. Hopefully it was just a bad day, I will try again. Risotto shouldn't be made with with pearl barley, it was awful. Dry and tasteless. A duck and chilli burger shouldn't taste like venison with sugar, and have no chilli in. And please make your own chips! The chips were awful. Change your fish supplier or lower the price for a thin piece .... Of I don't know what fish it was ..
