Poor beer, asked for what was popular and it was clearly off. Doubtful if they clear the lines regularly. Left most of a pint as I can’t be bothered complaining when 6 or 7 pubs nearby serve great beer! If you don’t care, then I don’t.

We would like to thank the 1 star reviewer who came into the pub last week and STUNK of weed so much that we could smell it upstairs. When questioned his reply was incoherent. Something about medical reasons was perhaps mumbled in there somewhere? Anyway, he was politely asked to leave after he finished his current drink and if he wished to come back to wrap up his "stash" so it didn't stink the pub out. As a response to your 1 star review and the lies it contained (I was not rude), don't ever come back in. That's a Lifetime ban Andrew.

This much loved pub, which had been closed for 2 years is now under new ownership. The new owners of this Free House are trying as hard as possible to make it a new version of the old style Community Pub that it used to be. The Castle Inn re-opened in July 2020.

We are staying near the lakes for our holiday this year, so after a full day out we found this very small Inn with incredibly friendly people and food which is excellent. When the new owners have replied to previous reviews they have asked "what could we do to make things even better"?....well, I have a great suggestion. Move Castle Inn to Bournemouth, which is where we live, and we will be in daily. The welcome, the friendliness, the quality of the Gourmet Burger and the Fish & Chips was outstanding. Thanks very much 😎

Finally got round to trying out the Castle's food. The food service hours, which used to be lunchtime only, have been extended until 8.00pm. by the new tenants, Vicky and Jamie. Two added incentives - Oakham 'Citra' and St. Austell 'Proper Job' are now available permanently in cask; and during January and February you can get two meals for a tenner! The regular full prices are not outrageous (7 or 8 quid is not expensive), but two meals for a tenner means you have a bit more to spend on beer - so that's almost like free beer! Last night, then, there were six of us, and between us we tried the gammon, fish, scampi and a couple of pies. And I mean pies, not a basin of filling with a lid on, but real pies. I had cheese and onion pie, with gravy, mashed spuds and peas, and (a nice touch) some pickled red cabbage. Tasty food, excellent beer, and service with a smile. My wife has just taken on a rescue dog (Meg), which we took with us to the pub, and Vicky gave as much attention to Meg as to we humans. So if you haven't been yet, get on down, you won't be disappointed. Support your local licensees, and keep a quality establishment like the Castle Inn running.

We had booked 5 rooms through Booking.com well in advance and when we arrived at 4pm we were told that our booking had been cancelled (Booking.com had taken our money the previous day). This eventually got sorted by Booking .com and we found good alternative accommodation for the night but the way we were treated by staff at the Derby Arms was awful.

First of all, a couple of points to bear in mind for anyone reading this. Although out of control of the P&W, the only parking on street is at a premium and very limited. This was our first visit here and the restaurant itself is quite small and intimate (absolutely nothing wrong with that) and therefore booking a table is a must during a 7/7:30 pm sitting as all tables were occupied. Not certain if the dining room is due to be decorated, but it really could benefit from a lick of paint to update the drab walls which were all totally bereft of any pictures and the only decoration was a tatty plant in a bottle. As a suggestion, perhaps tea lights could add to a current lack of ambiance? The two lads (brothers?) running the dining room were nothing short of polite and attentive (no complaints there), took our orders and did ask if we wanted more drinks regularly. What was a nice touch were the glasses of water with ice and lemon served to us as we were seated. I don't mind paying a premium price if the food is good, but the sharing bread and olives was a tad expensive for just that was, and the rest of the menu was on the steep side too for what was nothing special (sorry P&W) but very nice. We ordered our main meal, but it transpired that the table next to us got it and was eventually taken away from them and an apology given to them and us, which we did accept with no complaint but really shouldn't happen in a small restaurant. We were going to order a sweet, but after seeing the small portion our other 'neighbours' were served (again for the cost), we decided against it. What we should have done was to look on line at the menu and cost - totally the fault was ours but in our defence M'Lord, we had extremely poor internet service! It's often said you don't get a second chance at first impression, which can be somewhat disputed. That said, taking everything into account, I don't think we'd make a return visit but do wish them all the best for the future.
