First of all, a couple of points to bear in mind for anyone reading this. Although out of control of the P&W, the only parking on street is at a premium and very limited. This was our first visit here and the restaurant itself is quite small and intimate (absolutely nothing wrong with that) and therefore booking a table is a must during a 7/7:30 pm sitting as all tables were occupied. Not certain if the dining room is due to be decorated, but it really could benefit from a lick of paint to update the drab walls which were all totally bereft of any pictures and the only decoration was a tatty plant in a bottle. As a suggestion, perhaps tea lights could add to a current lack of ambiance? The two lads (brothers?) running the dining room were nothing short of polite and attentive (no complaints there), took our orders and did ask if we wanted more drinks regularly. What was a nice touch were the glasses of water with ice and lemon served to us as we were seated. I don't mind paying a premium price if the food is good, but the sharing bread and olives was a tad expensive for just that was, and the rest of the menu was on the steep side too for what was nothing special (sorry P&W) but very nice. We ordered our main meal, but it transpired that the table next to us got it and was eventually taken away from them and an apology given to them and us, which we did accept with no complaint but really shouldn't happen in a small restaurant. We were going to order a sweet, but after seeing the small portion our other 'neighbours' were served (again for the cost), we decided against it. What we should have done was to look on line at the menu and cost - totally the fault was ours but in our defence M'Lord, we had extremely poor internet service! It's often said you don't get a second chance at first impression, which can be somewhat disputed. That said, taking everything into account, I don't think we'd make a return visit but do wish them all the best for the future.

I’ve followed this pub on instagram for a few months now and tonight myself and a few work colleagues managed to experience this lovely gem of a place for food. Absolutely superb service from the two waiters , the food was outstanding, fabulous starter and main, good choice of drinks, a very pleasurable night and one we will definitely be experiencing again. We all loved it. Hope to visit soon and cannot wait to try the Taco evenings.

Last visited under previous management, when Sunday Lunch was very good. Another trip to Cartmel & promising reviews prompted a visit for Sunday Lunch. Sadly, things have rather gone downhill. We were ushered via a dank corridor into a cold room & offered menus. No starters are available but we were optimistic that the Beef Roast would be fine. Unfortunately not. The beef itself was actually very good & the roast potatoes & cauliflower cheese quite acceptable but the Yorkshire pudding was obviously bought in & tasteless & equally tasteless red cabbage, undercooked carrots & cabbage completed a very disappointing meal. We declined a pudding, paid & left & will not be back. Other reviews have been effusive but I’m afraid it was not very good. I wish current Management well- you have some work to do. PS turn the heating on and don’t serve food on chipped plates, plus don’t wrap your napkins around damp cutlery which makes the napkins soggy.

Visiting family and friends who live in Grange and Cartmel Fell. Booked a table for 1930. Arrived at 1925, didn’t mind waiting at the bar and checked on the table 20 mins later…….had already spent £55 on our first round of drinks as we bought a bottle of wine for dinner. 14 and 12 year old starving! Got taken through around 2010, seemed promising….. order taken about ten mins later ….. followed up on order at 2050….. kids now losing the will to live ….. it’s coming …… food finally arrived about 2130! Friends then have to leave as soon as they have eaten so they can pick up their son. Such a shame because the food was lovely but I’m really disappointed to have booked a table for 1930 and to have not eaten till 2130. Sadly they have lost a local family of 5 who would have eaten there and also my mum who is local. Let’s see what The Cavendish Arms is like for lunch…. Surely we won’t be waiting 2 hours before we get to eat!!!

As a party of six we booked the Pig and Whistle for a dinner. We were welcomed into a lively, friendly traditional pub, which is so good to see. A mixture of locals and visitors made the evening very enjoyable in the bar. We were taken through to the dining room and given a menu which was not too over facing but with a great choice and well thought out. After much decision making we decided to go for two sharing Camembert, Nacho's and Pork Belly. Each starter was very good but the Pork Belly was very impressive and will be ordered on our next visit. For main meals we had one Chicken Burger and five Reef and Beef - all mains were good portions, perfectly cooked and so tasty. We struggled to fit puddings in but decided to share three puddings, two sticky toffee profiteroles and a chocolate tart. The staff work extremely hard in a busy village and are an asset to this pub. Each member of staff was efficient, friendly and seemed to enjoy working there. Well done Dean and staff, keep up the good work.

Visited with my husband for an evening meal. The place looks a little tired and could do with up dating, however the staff were extremely efficient and friendly. Excellent fast service from a young blonde girl who served us. Had the nachos for starter which were great, but then for main course I had the chicken burger. It was pretty tasteless and the bun was so soggy it made it difficult to eat. Didn’t finish it all. Dessert was three tiny scoops of ice cream - not really worth the money. The food was a let down to be honest and wouldn’t recommend or return. Which is a shame as the place itself is friendly and welcoming.

We were so pleased that we chose this excellent village pub for our Sunday lunch. Not long taken over by a young couple, the Pig & Whistle is doing really good things. It's a traditional pub, owned by Robinsons Brewery, serving really tasty home cooked food and serving well-kept real ales. On a Sunday they offer an excellent "Sunday Sharer": - The ultimate Sunday sharer. Yorkshire puddings filled with bacon topped cheese sauce and beer onion gravy to dunk your sirloin steak, meat of the day, Cumberland sausage pig in blanket wheel, cauliflower cheese, stuffing and parmesan topped roasties and veggies in. This is nicely presented in a roasting tray. It was all excellent and the sirloin was served beautifully pink. All very tasty and a generous portion. The service was excellent. It's a shame we don't live closer. Good luck with pub, guys and thank you for a great Sunday lunch. (Also posted to my food blog on Instagram @AbbeyKing16)

Do not come here if you want a good roast. We were so disappointed, we just drove 30 min off the back of coming here 2 years ago and loving the roast, this place has gone downhill. We were greeted by a moody waitress and ordered two roasts for £17 each that were definitely not worth the money. The veg consisted of only, red cabbage that was far too over powering, 3 small potatoes and half a carrot, was also missing the advertised stuffing. The beef was completely over cooked, to the point I had to ask for a steak knife to cut it! Staff never asked how our meal was (even after having to ask for a steak knife) Avoid yourself the disappointment

HORRIBLE FOOD!! I was out today for lunch with my wife and child, and our experience was nothing short of terrible. We started with a pint of Moretti in the back garden, which had a pleasant ambiance, but things went downhill from there. The food menu was limited to roast dinners and Yorkie wraps, with options for beef and chicken. We ordered one of each with beef, along with a cheeseburger for my son. As a big beef lover, I was looking forward to a good meal. Unfortunately, from the very first bite, it was clear that the meat was of the cheapest cut, incredibly chewy, and left a terrible aftertaste. It was the worst dining experience I've ever had. What started as a beautiful day turned into a nightmare, and I wasted £50 on this atrocity. I usually don't post negative reviews, but this experience was so bad that I felt compelled to warn others. I didn't complain at the restaurant because I don't like wasting food, so I tried to eat as much as I could and left without a word.

Lovely beer garden at the rear so you can sit in the sun and admire the fantastic views overlooking Cartmel and the surrounding country side. Booked in again this weekend and can't wait. We stopped in after we'd been out for a meal in Cartmel and were so pleased we did! First thing to say is that the pub is under new management and so I'd pay more attention to reviews in the last few weeks than any before their time. We met Dean, who has recently taken over the pub and lives there with his young family. Seems a really nice guy and hope it all works out for them - based on our experience I'm sure it will. Nice atmosphere, decor etc. and good selection of food and drinks. If we'd been staying in Cartmel longer then we'd have come back for lunch but unfortunately we were leaving the next day.

I write this with such a heavy heart. I ate here when Simon Rogan had it and was so happy to be back. We arrived, sat in a lovely beer garden, met the gorgeous Coco chocolate Lab, we had our chocolate Lab with us. It was lovely. I went in to confirm our booking for food an hour later explaining we would move inside. And we did at 5, when we were booked. The woman started showing my husband and I to the restaurant. I queried if dogs were allowed and she said no there was no dog on the booking. I mean he was with us but hey. She said we could take the table in the bar. I checked my emails and said Jackson confirmed the dog a month ago. She snorted and said he was the owners son. And then said to us hopefully the other booking didn’t have a dog as if it were our fault. She then said to the delightful young lad who served us, really loudly, the name of the new owners of the pub. But what should she care. Or him. We got the wrong water and she asked if I had opened it, I said yes which was how I knew not sparkling and she explained it by saying they only had still and charged us. She is off to open her own tea rooms in Grange. God help her customers. Food mediocre. Sticky toffee saved it. This pub needs Robinsons to give a damn about it. All other pubs in Cartmel are so much better.

Having been let down by another local pub/restaurant despite receiving a booking confirmation, we thought there was nowhere we could find a meal on a Sunday evening. Despite a couple of awful reviews I have read of this place recently, I went to this almost in desperation for an evening meal not expecting success. The lady behind the Bar made no issue of accommodating our party of 4 and we were escorted to our table. Immediate service from Elise (unsure of spelling) was polite, friendly and efficient. The Menu offered a very good and varied range at very reasonable prices. None over £15. Every one thoroughly enjoyed the mains, and when it came to dessert choice Tim’s Sticky toffee pudding went down very well, a very generous portion, and so did the Golden Strawberry Creme Brûlée and the Summer Fruit pudding. At £5.95 each very decently priced in the modern market. All food was excellent, the service by the owner/landlady and all her staff was attentive, and very friendly. Would highly recommend and will Hopefully get the opportunity to return again, the mussels moules looked amazing.

Cumbria Way and Hopp beers were excellent. Duck Breast 'special' at £19.95 (excluding veg) was well presented but the meat was very tough. Chicken Breast from main menu also chewy. Service not very friendly. It didn't seem worth complaining about the food as I suspected any replacement would be equally tough having just been defrosted after the order came in. Also, didn't want to extend our visit longer than necessary as the atmosphere was fairly frosty in the dining room.

We booked a table via email a few days in advance for 9 people advising that we would also be bringing 2 dogs. This was reiterated when I called to pay a deposit over the phone. Upon arrival we were told that they were not aware we had dogs and as we had been seated in the restaurant area the dogs had to stay in the corner out of the way as they shouldn’t have been in there! The waitress who served as did not appear to enjoy her job as she miserable with no personality. We were made to feel like a burden and not a paying customer. When the food was brought out 2 of our party had to wait for their main courses resulting in the rest of us waiting for them and then our food going cold. The food was ok but not something I would rush back for. When it came to desserts we had to have the menu read to us for some reason?? - not sure why we couldn’t have read it ourselves. Needless to say we didn’t bother to stay for dessert. All in all we were disappointed with the experience and wish we had chosen a different pub in the village for the last night of our holiday.

I can only echo another reviewer's comments regarding the burger. It was bloody awful. Dry burger, dry bun, anaemic-looking boiled (I think?) onions. Our 'hand-cut' chips.... well, they definitely were not hand-cut. I'd like to say the service was good. I'd like to... but we thought our waitress seemed distinctly aloof. No smiles. No chit-chat. Very unwelcoming. A positive? The beer was nicer than the wine! There are 3 other pubs in Cartmel. The Pig & Whistle isn't one we'd ever visit again. Do better!

Sadly the "Pig and Whistle" failed to meet our expectations, lumpy mashed potatoes, a spoonful of boiled to death cabbage, a lack lustre jus, only the sausages were palatable, Overcooked steak, undercooked chips, think that sums it up!

Enjoyed a couple of drinks after racing. Unfortunately I left my phone, which was kindly handed in behind the bar. On contacting the pub the following day, a member of staff (Tim) saved me a 4 mile return walk/taxi ride, by bringing the phone to...

Visited last night for dinner. Thankfully rang ahead to get a table and would recommend doing this. Small menu, but great options. We went for the pork belly starts and burgers for main. Friendly staff, fresh and tasty food at reasonable prices. Would visit again.

I went there as an overal online rating was 4.5 stars so I thought must be a decent place... Firstly the interior seemed very basic and a lot of things could do with TLC: the floor was very tired beyond the 'rustic look' and seemed...

Great food and service as ever. The small fish and chips is still large! This is a lovely and welcoming pub close to Sizergh castle.

We had booked 5 rooms through Booking.com well in advance and when we arrived at 4pm we were told that our booking had been cancelled (Booking.com had taken our money the previous day). This eventually got sorted by Booking .com and we found good alternative accommodation for the night but the way we were treated by staff at the Derby Arms was awful.

Hotel very comfortable but no sockets in bathroom for charging your toothbrush. They kindly gave us an adapter to use while we were there. Nowhere to walk our dog nearby. Had to drive to Grange over Sands.
