Trattoria Gian Carlo's in Birmingham

bad start to the evening as the address on trip adviser is wrong. The starters were quite good ,but it went downhill from there. The fillet steak i ordered wasnt fillet and it had been butterflied so was overcooked, the peppercorn sauce tasted of vinegar with no hint of brandy or peppercorns. My husband`s lasagne was just a pile of soggy pasta with mince on top. We didnt stay for dessert...

Iv been a few times with family . Excellent food top-class service family run business with rely nice atmosphere .

We went to Gian Carlos recently with friends, i was semi wanting to cancel as i had been Bella Italia which was your jo basic do our self at home sort of Italian. Firstly its a very cute restaurant nice and cosey and very welcoming by the staff and owner. Now most important food, I had a bruschetta to start which was amazing in taste and came out nice and quick, my main i didnt want the typical lasagne and spag bol so the specials menu looked amazing I had veal in a cream and white wine sauce and added mushrooms to my dish, It came with lovely crunchy veg and potatoes which was nice not to have a pasta dish. We didn't try puddings as was so full from my starter and main. The owner was lovely very friendly and loved hearing all his stories. I couldn't recommend this place enough and look forward to my next visit

Buen vino, buena compañía, ¿qué más se puede pedir? Para cualquiera que conozca el área, el propietario es Umberto, quien solía tener su propio restaurante cerca.  El chef de Carlos es su hijo.

Great restaurant, enough choice of food and excellent quality. Really enjoyed our evening. Very friendly staff. Great wine too. We were going to try a different place but it was fully booked and we are so glad it was as this was perfect.

A lovely Italian restaurant. Atmosphere was great and the food I had was excellent at a very reasonable price. Service was quite slow between courses, but I believe that was due to us being a large group for a small restaurant and we were all served together. Only grumble for me was being in front of the music, which was too loud, so had trouble hearing my neighbours. They did turn it down when requested, but then turned it up again. Overall an excellent evening for dinner with friendes and my wife will be very happy to go again.

Came here a couple of days ago as I have drove past the restaurant many times but never actually popped in - so glad I decided too! They have a set menu offer Tuesday- Thursday 3 courses for £15. Me & my friends all took advantage of this offer, to start I had antipasto, ravioli for main & profiteroles for dessert and every last mouthful was delicious. The service was great & the owner was so friendly and came and spoke to us about the restaurant and told us his son is the chef. Will definitely be back in future was a lovely family run place with fantastic food.

What a fabulous little Italian restaurant! Warm greeting,super-friendly staff, fabulous food. For starters one of us had calamari in a white wine sauce (not your usual deep fried stuff), one of us king prawns. For mains, one fillet steak in a cream and pepper sauce, one sea bass. All were beautifully cooked and presented and absolutely delicious. House wine was £12.50 - where else can you get a decent bottle of wine at that price? Too full for desserts, the bill came to less than £60 - you could pay that in a chain pizzeria. We will be back soon.

Trawled the internet looking for a a localish Italian Restaraunt. The reviews suggested it was a gem...and they were totally right. A family run business. The service was top class. The starters - Calamari and stuffed mushrooms were classic. The steaks - Rossini - were the most enjoyable I have ever had. Umberto the Maitre D should have his own TV series, what a star!. The desert Tiramasu was amazing. I can also recommend the house red to wash it all down. Definately going back soon.

Popped in again as part of my wife’s birthday celebrations. Steak was so tender and we had different sauces- both were excellent . Our sweets were wonderful too. Gian Carlo is a marvellous chef and Umberto keeps us entertained

Delightfully old fashioned Italian with good home cooking. Umberto is a real character and adds to the wonderful ambience. Very reminiscent of Da Corrado’s where it all began for him. The midweek set menu is great value at £15 for three courses. Can’t wait to go back!

Desde el restaurante se puede ver a su hijo en la cocina, que sirve una cocina italiana fresca y sincera. Tuvimos una encantadora bienvenida al entrar y nos llevaron a nuestra mesa. Pedimos unas bebidas y nos dieron un poco de pan de ajo fresco mientras navegaba por el menú. Todo lo que pedimos estaba delicioso y nada era demasiado problema. Estaba viendo la envidia de la comida mientras miraba algunos de los platos que comían los demás clientes del restaurante. Muchas gracias por su hospitalidad. Tuvimos una noche maravillosa y definitivamente regresaremos en el futuro.

Our visit on a busy Saturday evening was like stepping back in time! We're not great fans of the large restaurant chains and therefore our experience at Giancarlo's served to remind us of days gone by when small independents provided such good value for money and such genuinely warm customer service. On arrival at 8.30 pm the restaurant was pretty full as they were catering for a large table celebrating a special birthday - consequently Umberto advised us that there might be a delay in taking our orders - fine by us as it gave us the opportunity to sample the very reasonably priced Gavi di Gavi while we waited. The first thing that strikes you about the menu is the prices - for example 18.95 for a fillet steak including the sauce and selection of vegetables - such a rarity nowadays. All starters are also under seven quid with many considerably less than that. My wife and I opted for King Prawn and Scallops at 6.95; the other couple choosing Calamari Italiano and Prosciutto and Melon. All were delightful and pretty large portions too. Everyone opted for the Filleto Al Pepe - fillet steak peppered in a cream and brandy sauce. All steaks were large centre cut pieces - not the tail end which I seem to end up with at every steak restaurant we tend to visit!! Every one of them very tender, full of flavour and cooked to perfection - 2 x medium, 1 x medium rare and 1 x rare. The sauce was lovely and again reminded me of Italian restaurants of old and not at all like those offered in the likes of Carluccio's and Jamie's etc today. Even the vegetables were good - a bit basic but perfectly adequate and plenty of them to share. If you're looking for swanky and sophisticated then it probably wouldn't suit you but if you're happy to accept the concept of eating in Italian mammas front room, you'll love it. The quick wit and charm of Umberto adds to the occasion as does the service offered by the whole team. Altogether a very enjoyable, good value for money experience was had by all. Definitely planning to return.

Fuimos a cenar el martes 4 de septiembre, teníamos un cupón de groupon (18.00 para dos cursos) nos recibió Umberto, el propietario, y tuvimos una charla muy agradable con él, ¡su hijo ahora hace toda la cocina! Los entrantes de sopa minestrone y whitebait eran encantadores, las comidas principales de pollo y pasta estaban recién hechas y de alta calidad. En conclusión, gran descubrimiento! ! Regresaríamos, definitivamente, de hecho, estuvimos reservando durante tres semanas antes de irnos.

Esto fue un viernes por la noche con amigos. Nuestro grupo de edad va de 58 a 92. Nos gusta explorar diferentes restaurantes y este fue recomendado a nuestros amigos. A pesar de que salen mucho, no habían estado en este restaurante ni habían oído hablar de él. Realmente es una pequeña joya escondida de un lugar. Propiedad y dirigido por Umberto, su esposa y su hijo son los chefs, con el mejor amigo de la esposa, Pat, al frente de la casa (camarera / bebidas / café). Umberto también está al frente de la casa, con su ingenio, sus historias y sus modales muy acogedores y traviesos. Un sentido del humor, diversión, diversión y amabilidad recorre el restaurante.

Humberto era muy entretenido durante la noche y decidimos volver con algunos amigos 3 días más tarde. De nuevo otra noche encantador y la comida es muy muy buena. A beautiful brilliant italian with such a homely feel to. Then food to the service was excellent. As a family run place u really get thr feel of italy, if u closed your eyes relaxed listened to the bank ground music for a few moments your in in Italy. Celebramos el 70 cumpleaños de mi esposo de aquí en una noche de sábado muy concurrida. La comida era deliciosa, el ambiente genial y el servicio era excelente. Dos de nosotros en nuestro grupo de 15 tenía alergias y intolerancias alimentarias, pero los dos estábamos alojados y toda la comida recién hecha que sabrosa que contiene sólo los ingredientes que podíamos comer. Todos en nuestro grupo tenía una noche estupenda con una comida excelente y el personal era muy acogedor y amable, nada era demasiada molestia. Algunos que vivieron localmente nunca ha estado allí antes, pero dijo que sin duda volveremos. Una excelente noche - Gracias Gian, Umberto, Monica y Pat.

Normalmente tienen una cerveza para empezar y luego disfrute de la excelente carta de vinos de la casa. Una característica de este restaurante es que cuando alguien está celebrando una ocasión especial, la mayoría de esos en el restaurante parece a participar en la celebración en el final de la comida. Quizás no es excepcional, pero un menú straightfoward y servicio amable significa que está bien para una cena agradable. Vino de la casa (rojo) es bastante bueno también.

Small family run Trattoria. First visit and will be going back. Went on a Thursday and took advantage of their 3 courses from set menu for £15. The food was very good and would warrant a return visit.

Second time we have visited here. 6 chaps off to the NEC car show the next day. What a lovely evening. Warm, friendly, great food and amazing value.We will be back next year

A hidden gem, went here on Friday 28 th, which happened to be music night. What an amazing time we had from being greeted to leaving we were well looked after, food was great and the house red wine is just fantastic! Eight of us altogether all different ages, we never stopped laughing all night the hosts and servers couldn't do enough for us so helpful music was great we danced the night away, it was like being at a family party, the atmosphere was great, can't say enough about this place WONDERFUL definitely going again. We have been regular diners at Gian Carlo's since they opened. Always a warm welcome from Umberto Monica and Pat. Great food and wine selection.

Myself and my partner visited here on Saturday night and were greeted by the very friendly and welcoming father of the chef. Authentic Italian family run restaurant. We were quickly seated and served garlic bread while we had a look through the menu. my partner ordered the fillet Montanara and I had ravioli Giancarlo. Both of which were freshly prepared and cooked perfectly. I had a glass of house white and my partner had a glass of house red both wines were excellent. We will definitely be back in the near future as we live nearby. Fantastic food at very reasonable prices.

Took my Beautiful Companion on a trip back to where she was born whilst going to the Moseley Folk Festival. Needed to refuel so chose the nearest Italian. First sight the restaurant looked a bit basic and wasn't very big. But that's a plus in some ways because it means the waiting staff don't get overloaded. The tables and chairs although simple were perfectly serviceable. Menu was limited, and the food was not too bad and fair value. We were regaled by (I assume) the proprietor, but he did seem to forget that he'd already spoken to us and repeated his tales at least 3 times. I'll be charitable and put it down the fact that he'd flown from Italy and gone straight into work. Probably wouldn't return if I'm honest.

Have Eaten here a few times ad it just gets better. Great food, great host, great value. Highly recommend, it is a hidden gem!

Surprise 30th birthday came down from Nottingham,very small inside but the food was top class,nice big portions and plated well,had the steak for a main,melt in the mouth job... Entertainment was very good too.. A must visit if you live in this area.

what a lovely little Italian restaurant ran by father and son such a friendly man, you can park outside on the road but no private car park as its next to shops this place should be somewhere else on a busy high street like harborne as it needs to be recognised for its lovely food and hospitality, we had been recommended to go by friends otherwise we wouldn't have known about it.most definitely go again

What a wonderful little find. Celebrated my 50th birthday with family here. Lovely food, although a set menu as there was entertainment. Would imagine the food is even better off the menu. Fabulous hosts, very welcoming and fun. Thoroughly enjoyable experience. I didn't get chance to say thank you as I was a little tipsy so thank you Umberto and staff for a lovely evening.

Very good food and friendly staff. I've just had the tastiest prawn linguini ever. I felt lucky to get in as we had the last spare table. You may have to wait a little bit it is well worth the wait.

What a lovely little find. We were first in the restaurant and were greeted with a warm welcome. The manager was lovely, making us laugh and being very attentive. The king prawn starter was to die for, and my Mom had the garlic bread with cheese which was a sizeable portion, but also very tasty.I had the monkfish from the specials board and Mom had the chicken, both of which were lovely. But what really made this night special was the personal attention and service we received from the staff. I've been searching for a while now for a restaurant that has it all and I think I found it. We will definitely be visiting here again.

Tried this restaurant for the first time by sampling their '3 courses for £15'. Lovely food, good value and relaxing atmosphere - quite quiet tonight (mid-week) but will definitely be returning to eat off the full menu and see what the atmosphere is like at the weekend.

Wonderful little family run Italian in Hall Green. The staff are friendly and the food is delicious. For 3 courses for £15 you get amazing value for money including even Sea Bass on the menu! We had a private party on a Sunday and it was perfect. Would definitely recommend this place and will be going back again soon.

On Friday 5th of June, my wife and I, and two friends of ours, went to Trattoria Gian Carlo's for another fantastic night. The Trattoria was packed with very happy customers, there were couple of Birthday parties in one long table of 15 and we all celebrated them singing and cheering! The meals were absolutely top,as always, we had a succulent steak with blue cheese and white wine sauce, to die for,and chicken cacciatora , cooked in a delicate tomato sauce,full of flavour and freshness! People, if you want to have an authentic Italian meal cooked by a good chef, served by a top professional staff, at a very modest price, then, take yourself and your family to this Trattoria and try it..... You will not be disappointed! Ciao e Buon Appetito!

I recently went to this hidden treasure trove in Hall Green. This restaurant is understated from the outside. I made a reservation and on entering I was warmly welcomed by Umberto, the owner. I was not rushed to make a selection nor was I constantly bombarded by staff asking if I wanted a drink. On choosing my meal I was assisted by the staff in order to get the right selection. Furthermore I noticed that the prices were reasonable. I was assured that the quantity of food would be sufficient. I was informed that the food was fresh and would take some time to prepare. The menu selection was not plentiful but this made me feel good about the freshness of the product. When the started arrived it was hot and tasty. The main course was the same and upon finishing my meal I enjoyed a dessert. If you are looking for a contemporary restaurant with multiple lights and cosy chairs this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a clean restaurant with fine staff where the owner is on the premises. Where the customers appear to be regulars who knew the staff. Where the quantities are filling and the food is to be eaten not photographed, this is the place. This restaurant filled up fairly quickly and I would recommend that a booking be made. I will definitely return to this restaurant.

My family and me have been regular visitors to Gian Carlos for a number of years, we love the friendly atmosphere provided by Umberto,Gian Carlo,Monica and Pat. We love the authentic Italian dishes cooked freshly to order by Gian Carlo, we have sampled most dishes on the menu over the years and have never been disappointed. The 3 course meals for £15 Tues to Thursday are great value and weekends are good with addition of seasonal specials. The wine's not bad either! After you have eaten there is always plenty of time to have a chat with Umberto who will always share a laugh and a joke with you.If you prefer the taste of Dolmio Sauce that's up to you but we prefer the real thing!

Whenever I am in the Midlands myself and my family visit this lovely little restaurant,if we lived closer we would eat there every week!I am horrified by the nasty comments of a recent review.The food is always freshly cooked to order, and is full of flavour,the staff are always friendly and welcoming, and the place itself is simple and traditionally authentic....so do not be put off by the nasty untrue comments of that nasty review..

A very nice simple Italian restaurant just off Stratford Road in Hall Green. Welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Umberto and his staff are very friendly and look after you very well, with a good understanding of the menu and the daily specials. The aribata starter is a little bland. However the mains are very good. 3 of us had the steaks with different sauces and all were perfeclty cooked and very flavoursome. The pork special was also very good. Excellent value as well as I usually find Italian restaurants quite expensive, but this seems to be very reasonably priced.Compliments to Umbertos Son who is the chef. We will return. Thank you

A very pleasant and authentic restaurant which is licensed and has a good menu range ; pasta dishes, classics like porc alla Romano and antipasto etc. it's not a big place but is well and simply laid out.

Gian Carlo's is a lovely, small family restaurant. Our waitress was very pleasant and attentive from start to finish, and was happy to leave us chatting when we declined dessert (all too full!) The owner is incredibly friendly and kept coming to our table and checking everything was okay and chatting to us. I had the tomato bruschetta to start which was lovely, and a very generous portion size. The ravioli Gian Carlo for my main was equally tasty and the sauce very flavoursome. All the others in my group also said their food had been really good. We had a very nice evening, friendly atmosphere despite being relatively quiet. I would recommend and definitely return to support this small, local family run restaurant.

I went to this beautiful restaurant in October with my boyfriends family, for some pre-wedding celebrations. My partners extended family are regular visitors to this restaurant and we were all welcomed with open arms and smiles by the owner. The food was truly delicious, we had the three courses for £15 and we're not left disappointed. There were a lot of us dining in the small restaurant and not one complaint was uttered about the food, drink or service and rightly so as it was all superb. A wonderful evening was had by all,with singing a plenty to the wonderful live music. Can't wait to come back here when back in Birmingham visiting the partners family. This restaurant is a must if you are looking for amazing service, beautiful home cooked food and a lovely atmosphere.

Gian Carlos cooking is wonderful, and the way that Umberto and Monica greet their customers is a joy to behold. It's a pleasure to go there, the fillet steak Rossini and the Chicken cacciatore is to die for and the wine list is awesome. Gian Carlos pasta dishes are sublime and I could eat the Lasagne 7 days a week. The prices are very very reasonable and for that special family occasion you really can't beat it. Wouldn't go anywhere else for Italian food. Was shocked by the revue from NS1984 don't now what they expected but have never had a bad experience here.

Came here with my partner as we have recently moved to the area. The restaurant itself is really rather pleasant within with tasteful decor and great ambiance. The music does get a little irritating after a while. We encountered the proprietor who also acts as waiter, a genuine Italian man. He is very attentive and pleasant, though sometimes a little bit too friendly. We decided to scrap the three course table d’hôte menu for £15.00 as I wanted to have all the menu available. The prices are indeed very reasonable and portions are generous, but the food itself lacked character. My starter was Calamari Italiano. This dish was literally swimming in a sauce that to be honest was rather bland. As a whole it was not an unpleasant dish, but neither was it anything I couldn't buy in a supermarket. For mains I had Linguine Marinara. The seafood was rather overcooked and tasteless and the dish came swimming in exactly the same sauce as the started did.As a whole, the night was not a negative experience, but I wouldn't choose this place for a "night out".

Clearly the most recent review with the shocking comments has a hidden agenda so treat it with the contempt it deserves.This is a family restaurant and one of the most friendly places I know. The food is all fully prepared and cooked by the owners and put simply its gorgeous. The king prawns in garlic starter and the fillet steak montanaro were just amazing.So in summery, don't let someone's clear personal grudge (the recent review, unless Trip Advisor have removed it) put you off, this place is a hidden gem.

Have been to this little Italian restaurant to celebrate special occasions, for the last two years or so, and as yet we have not been disappointed. The decor is probably 3 star but the food is positively 5 star. Our last visit was on Friday 7th February for a wedding anniversary. The small, but cosy, restaurant was full with a couple of birthday parties in full swing. This time a solo guitarist/vocalist added to the atmosphere. As previously stated we have used this place several times, but have been mid week where the food is always good, but lacking in number of diners and therefore, I guess, maybe a little too quiet for some people.This time an excellent 3 course meal was enjoyed (you must try the steak!) with a litre and half of house red wine for a cost of just over £70. The manager was also celebrating his birthday which added to the occasion and was even better when glasses of bubbly were distributed to all the diners to ensure all the celebrations were enjoyed.

We dine fairly regularly at Gian Carlo in Hall Green, Birmingham, as we live nearby. We're more than happy to take friends there, as the food is of a good standard and, above all, is tasty and of consistent quality.It's a family Trattoria, and the owners give it a homely feel with warm welcomes and good humour.The menu is not large but it has a reasonable selection. Better to have a small menu with all dishes cooked well than a large menu with your dish cooked badly. They do a 3-course table d'hote menu Tuesday to Thursday which is really good value, and there are usually "specials" on to supplement the menu.Wines are not expensive- the house wine is very drinkable (maybe too much so!) and is priced well. It is a small Trattoria, and they regularly cater for large parties, so best to enquire first before just turning up.If you're looking for an authentic Italian family restaurant you could do a lot worse than visit Gian Carlo's.

Family went again to this lovely resturant on Mothers Day, had a good time ,but would have liked a little more variety on the menu i.e. steak, garlic bread and cheese and bic. the little one on our table wanted garlic bread ,told none on menu, but noticed they had some on another table.also cheese and bics would have gone down well, then glasses of port would have been par- taken, Apart from that it is a place with plenty ot atmosphere.and the service and friendlyness is excellent. It was very very busy this year.

I eat here often with my partner and have done since I moved to the area in 2007. It is charming, serves authentic Italian food, and has a friendly atmosphere you would expect from any good family-run Trattoria in Italy... What makes it so inviting, not only is the food excellent, but the owner is also completely charming. Please try this restaurant if you love Italian food!

If it is a fabulous, independent Italian restaurant in south Birmingham that you're looking for, then Gian Carlo's it. Located just by the Waitrose in Hall Green, this lovely little place is well worth a visit. The restaurant is quite small, but can accommodate large parties; both times I have been there has been a table for 10+ people in the centre of the room. Gingham table cloths and linen napkins propel us back to a time when that was what you needed to make an Italian restaurant in the UK 'authentic' but the real charm comes from the owner himself. Originally from Roma, he knows everything about Italian food of the different regions, and he delivers this information in a passion-filled way that makes you want to immediately book flights to go over there yourself...The food is absolutely delicious and both that and the drinks are reasonably priced. Complimentary garlic bread arrives on the table while you check out the menu. We ordered half a carafe of house red which was lovely, and most definitely Italian. The food itself is the best bit. We ordered an antipasti to share, which came with dressed salad and olives. I ordered lasagne which was served in a bowl, surrounded by delicious sauce and smothered in extra parmesan - which accompanied the main meals to the table. My partner ordered the Tortelloni with  mushrooms and bacon, this is what i had the first time we wet. It is absolutely amazing. Hugely filling, this is the most sumptuous dish of pasta either of us have ever eaten. It's worth going there for this alone. It's probably worth noting that they do non-pasta main meals too but no pizzas...We finished the meal with a panacotta and a serving of incredible ice-cream.  The whole thing had come to £41 and we could hardly walk out to the car, we were so full.I would recommend Gian Carlo's to anyone who loves Italian food. The service is fabulous, the owner doubles-up as the waiter and his son does the cooking. The family's obvious love of food make this a great choice.

I was in Birmingham for the national wedding show this weekend with my mum,sister and future mother in law, we decided to go out for a meal on the Saturday night checked trip advisor for a local Italian and decided to try here we were not sure what to expect but we were so pleased we decided to go to Gian Carlos the atmosphere, food and staff were fantastic loved the napkin tricks!! There was a lovely menu with a great selection off dishes and drinks all reasonably priced we would defiantly go again if we are ever in the area again

This is another establishment which we visit quite frequently - we have also been with various family members and friends, and they have all enjoyed the experience.The food is not standard Italian fare - no pizza, and although there is quite a wide range of pasta dishes you can also choose from slightly more unusual fare. They generally offer fresh fish (usually sea bass, but often other seafood as well), steak and a number of chicken dishes. Most meals come with a nice plate of fresh vegetables and you can also order a freshly prepared side salad. The restaurant has quite an authentic Italian atmosphere - not least because of the music.This is very much a family run business - Gian Carlo is the chef, his father Umberto does the serving assisted by other family members and friends - and before long you'll feel like one of the family too.

the food at this resturant is excellent and the staff are so friendly nothing is too much trouble for them. Went on Mother's day in March, and there were five mothers at our table all of us got a box of chocolates which we all thought was a lovely touch. My husband and I also went with two friends in June again had a wonderful meal.

Garlic bread was particularly nice. Of note, there were no Pizza's on the menu which depending on your preference is either a good or bad thing.Service 5/5They immdiately apologied for being understaffed the night we visited, which was very honest and appreciated. In essence, they were much busier than expected which tells you a bit about the local reputation this place must have established. The ‘main-man’ was very funny (in a good way) and provided us with laughs throughout the evening.Atmosphere 5/5Décor is typical of local family run Italian (see pics). As stated, the place was pretty busy (couples and families) and everyone seemed to be having a good time.Toilets (Unable to comment)Value 4/5Felt the cost was reasonable.Overall 3.5/5Definitely worth a try, if just for the service and atmosphere. Food may not be upto everyone’s standard.

This restaurant is absolutely amazing, the food is beautiful, the detail in looking after the guests is second to none!

Umberto and his son Gian Carlo (the chef) create delicious food and serve it simply. We've had some lovely meals here in the last few years. This trip was no exception. Delighted to support a family restaurant. Great atmosphere, great italian style food, great service, great wine, can't wait to go again! Can recommend the stuffed mushrooms, the lamb shank and the sea bass, and to drink the white prosecco and the primitivo!
