Towngate Fisheries in Bradford

Great fish and chips. Tight squeeze in and out, but excellent and fast service. There is a reason this place always has a queue, it's worth it!

Need to speed up their service.

I bought four portions of fish and chips from Towngate as my brother was visiting from Australia and we all commented on how tasty the chips were - like home-made and not greasy at all. The fish too was chunky and the portions were generous. What I really liked was the fact biodegradable boxes are used which means food can be eaten straight from their instead of trying to separate several fish from each other and sharing chips out equally if they were wrapped in paper! Well done Towngate!

Definitely gone down hill fish and chips was dry and blunt was disappointed years last time i been here was very nice food but but not now shame

Back from a family holiday in Spain and straight to Towngate fisheries. The food was very tasty and good value for money, ( we took advantage of the lunchtime offers) and received a loyalty card for future visits. The shop had a high volume of customers and we were very impressed with how efficiently the friendly staff managed to serve everyone in a timely manner. We will most definitely be returning in the near future.

Having had three fish and chip shops I feel that what I am going to say is true. The product left a greasy taste in your mouth.The chips were scrappy and had been in dry white(either in full Potato or after being chipped.) The place was clean,the staff were good, A bit on the expensive side.Would not have won best chippy award based on Saturday's performance.Sorry but that's my reason why I won't be going again.

Yesterday I ordered fish and chips and my daughter had found hair in her food nearly eating it. I was very disgusted to hear this as I had seen it myself. We have been buying from this fishery for a while now and never in my life has this shop not impressed me. I did not ask for a refund as mistakes can happen but for something to happen like this is unacceptable. I will try again next Friday to see what happens.

Best fish and chips by far. Taste just like they used to do. We travel past many other shops to get to this one...simply the best A++++

How this place has won awards is beyond me! Poor quality food, scrappy chips, small portions and expensive for what you get. Very disappointing.

My sister and niece visited me from Sheffield yesterday and whenever they come we have fish and chips for lunch from Towngate. We all really look forward to our meal and are never disappointed.

Very nice fish & chips but a tad expensive

Myself and a couple of work colleagues bought fish and chips today on my recommendation as i use this fish shop at least once a week and have never had a complaint until today… the fish were so small and tasteless and the chips were lukewarm at best, the tea cakes were a cheap brand and fell apart when you picked them up, the curry sauce tasted of curry powder and the portions were so small I was embarrassed I recommended this fish shop especially when my colleagues were going to use another one nearby, we definitely did not get value for money…. The meals were terrible

Had two fish one chips and a curry sauce.fish was very small for price and was dry like it had been under the heater for too long. chips looked like it was all they had left and couldnt be bothered making fresh.curry sauce was lovely only they have reduced portion size.used to be best around but me and wife said we would not go back after today. Oh and i asked if they had any cakes to be told 15 mins and it was only 12.45.need to get back on track

I've visited Towngate Fisheries in Idle on several occasions, and I am reminded of why this place stands out each time. Opting for their haddock and chips with lashings of salt & vinegar has repeatedly proven to be a delightful choice. The fish is always perfectly cooked. The chips complement the fish wonderfully, achieving that coveted balance of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Their curry sauce and homemade mushy peas are not to be overlooked. The curry sauce adds a nice kick, while the mushy peas are a comforting touch of home. The staff at Towngate Fisheries deserve a special mention. They are well-trained and genuinely pleasant, contributing significantly to the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Their efficiency and friendliness make the dining experience even more enjoyable, ensuring that every visit is pleasant.

A Bradfordian living in Norfolk for the past 18 years, I love visiting my family in Yorkshire and always try to have my "fix" of Bradford fish and chips. I have tried many of the local chippies but have found Towngate to be the friendliest in the local area. Most importantly though, I believe they also serve the best fish and chips too. I have also discovered that, having recently been tested and found to have slightly raised cholesterol, I have been able to check the nutritional values of Towngate's food on the West Yorkshire Analytical Services website. So I can now enjoy my fish and chips but still keep my saturated fats down It's a win win for me. Well done Towngate Fisheries.

Visited a couple of weeks ago, my first impressions were good! Spotlessly clean and the food looked great BUT when I tasted the fish & chips I found them very bland almost like the dripping they’d been cooked in had been completely neutralised of flavour? Certainly not the depth of flavour I’ve become accustomed to when visiting PROPER Yorkshire chippies. Vastly overpriced in my opinion, if you want superior quality and value for money get thi sen to the Jolly fryer in Huddersfield youl struggle to find better!

Great food & great deals too. The staff are lovely, have been going to this Fish & Chips since a toddler. But have not been for years. Now will be my goto pick up when visiting the parents in Yorkshire. Other counties need to start asking people if they would like scraps(crispy batter) with there Fish & Chips. Yum😋👍

Sorry to say now moved from idle village and I will miss my favourite fish shop , luckily come back to Bradford nearly every wk will still get my favourite special haddock and chips. Unbeatable in the area , don't trust my review call and see.

Excellent quality traditional fish and chips. It’s worth knowing that Summer evenings are ideal for eating food from Towngate Fisheries at the adjacent New Inn

This used to be an excellent chippy. I've used this chippy for over 10 years, but recently the standard of the food and portion size has fallen. The recent visits the fish was tiny, including the special (large fish), which was not too dissimilar to a regular fish and the chips were just a light sprinkle. After several poor experiences I've use another local chippy now, who offer better quality, portion size and value.

I happened across Towngate Fisheries by accident while visiting Idle on business. What a little gem. I haven’t had better fish and chips and look forward to visiting Idle and this chippy once again.

Went in at lunchtime and got the sausage meal deal. The sausage was perfectly battered and tasted nice. The chips were pale and underdone, very chewy. Curry sauce was disgusting and tasted nothing like it does at other fish shops - very dark colour.

Great fish and chips. Used click and collect for prompt service.

We live in Wakefield, and found this shop whilst working in Bradford, we now come over once a month not only is the food lovely but the two young girls on a lunchtime are very friendly and chatty

Excellent local chippy as always. The new Southern Fried Chicken range is a must-try too. I'd recommend ordering online for a pick up slot on busy nights like Friday and Saturday as you can just go and get your order straightaway instead of waiting in the super long queues! Fish and chips cooked in beef dripping and done to perfection.

Towngate fish and chips are absolutely the best I have had anywhere and I have visited a lot of fish and chip shops. They are freshly cooked to perfection and delicious. We have bought from them for years and would thoroughly recommend them.

Great service, lovely F&C.... Today £7.80 pp. But compared to a curry elsewhere £15 was a real nice thing.

I tried the fish & chips here for the first time this week as a friend recommended them telling me they were the best ever - boy were they right! The fish was white and chunky, the batter crisp and crunchy and the chips although looking pale in colour tasted just how I like them (my friend says it’s because they fry the traditional way in beef dripping). Although they cost more than sone other places they were well worth it and I’ll definitely be back

I had family come to visit over the holidays and they insisted we got fish & chips from here as there’s nothing like it where they live. The food was delicious as always and good value for money. I have the lite bite as it’s just enough for me and the family shared 2 of their “meal for two” offers. We have a loyalty card even though I no longer get to go as often as I used to which saves us money too

My wife and I had fish and chips today, and they were absolute rubbish, the Fish was so small it was like eating batter only, also we paid for haddock, and it was pollock, we will never go again.

Expensive but the food is of the highest quality

Been going here for over 20 years now. It's what I consider my "local chippy". In my opinion, it's never dipped in quality but has gotten pricier. However what isn't going up in price nowadays. Well worth a try if you haven't been.

Called in for a fish butty after a couple of early evening drinks. It was quite busy, but the 2 young girls behind the counter were well organised and doing a sterling job. The fish was superb, really fresh and lovely crispy batter. Great value....

Fish and chips is a monthly treat from Towngate . . .they are consistently good! Tonight, however, the batter was completely amazing!! If you want great quality, taste, and service then you can't go wrong!

The fish was superb being expertly cooked and the battered sausage was my wife's favourite. Much better than our last slightly disappointing takeaway.

Revisited to check out the relatively new click and collect service. Very speedy service and the food was excellent as always. Loved how fresh the fish and chips are. I was surprised to find out the mushy peas was half price today, which was excellent and impressed with the cooking oil they use for the fish and chips. The oil they use has satisfying after taste and definitely does not taste greasy.

CLICK AND COLLECT has been a great during lockdown for a chippy tea before we could eat out. In fact we are still using it even though you can queue to buy. Prefer collection as its less hassle always. Friendly staff an ajways enjoyable.

Towngate Fisheries in Idle is the Best in the whole area.. we live 3 miles away and know all of the Fish n Chip Shops. The Quality is 5 Star not Greasy with Best Haddock in crispy Batter and Top quantity potatoes and fry Golden Brown.Not to be missed. Brian and Jenny

The new click and collect service during lockdown has been great. The fish and chips are always tasty, and the option of a light bite also helps, although even that is a full plate full!

Was a fan of this shop, until tonight, ordered fish n chips three times, two fine..I presume, but my portion was two thin pieces of fish battered one atop the other, and one didn't taste too good either. Both had a lot of grey protein of which should've been cut off, obviously they couldn't as there wouldn't have been any fish left. Had it been possible to take back I would've done...but then what, either my money back, or a portion to eat on my own.....doubt I'll be going back....

This is the first time I have used this fish and chip shop and the Click and Collect worked perfectly. The Special fish with chips and mushy peas with mint on were one of the best i have had for a very long time.WELL DONE to all.
