Town Street Fryer in Stockport

Oh dear, after reading all the rave reviews we decided to try this chippie. We ordered Chips, pie and two sausages and curry sauce & Peas. The chip portions were average, verging on the small side. The chips looked like they had been triple cooked, and some where actually burnt to a crisp. The chips were opened promptly and put on plates, but were cold, but worse of all they had little potato in them. (The ones in the photo are what I could pick out of a portion) Were we unlucky, apparently these were freshly cooked!? Not for us, and not a patch on Whitakers in Marple, proper portions and chips with potato in them.

Fish probably best I've ever had, batter superb but chips, probably some of the worse I've had. I've live in Scotland, chips there are rubbish, I relish decent English chips when I get home - but obviously not from here.

Exceptional fish and chips are only surpassed by the amazing freshly made pies. Quite simply the best fish and chip shop I have visited in years.

My partner and I had two poor experiences here, and had given up. But seeing it do very well in the National Awards, decided to give it another go. Unfortunately, the experience was exactly the same all three times. Luke warm chips that tasted stale and very dry, on all three visits. To top it off, we both were on the toilet a lot after eating them on the 3rd visit, which wasn't pleasant. We really want to support our local chippy, but cannot understand the awards as the chips have been bad every time, which is such a shame.

After reading all of the positive reviews and living locally thought I've got to try the fish and chips. Well they more than lived up to it probably one of the best fish I have ever tasted and as previous reviews have said it is all about the light batter. Chips too were excellent and I will most definitely be back to try a home made pie!

What a great place! Home made pies of the highest quality, made on the premesis by hand. This is an unusual chippy where the best ingredients are put together thoughtfully. The curry sauce comes in regular or spicy choices. The mushy peas are not dyed bright green and are delicious. The owner is very personable and pleasant. His ideas for the development of his business are creative. He thinks carefully about what he produces. A truly great chippy. And just down the road from where we live. Thanks for a lovely meal.

We live a few miles away so it’s not too local but I’m very pleased I made the effort to call here on the way through. The choice was great (especially for a Tuesday) and the home-made pies looked amazing. That’ll be for next time as I went for fish and chips tonight. Beautifully cooked and the batter was deliciously light and crisp. Richard and his staff were very friendly and the place was spotless. As everything is cooked to order, I even had time for a small beer across the road in the Royal Scot while the fish were in the fryer. Will definitely see you again very soon!

Genuinely the best fish and chips I’ve had in the UK. If you are a curry sauce fan, do not leave without ordering some.

The most amazing cheese and onion pie, and fish cooked in the lightest possible batter. Perfect We have had the beef pie on a previous visit and must say that these home-made pies are truly delicious

A friend of mine brought over a party of Australians on a walking tour. We made this a half way stop for fish and chips, glad we did!!!! Service was great (14 people in total) food was tasty and fresh can't recommend highly enough.

Came across this gem while working in the area. The food is of exceptional quality, especially the homemade pies, the service from the staff is also exceptional, seating available over the road outside of the pub wjere you can sit with a drink and they will let you know when your food is ready and will even bring it over to you if not too busy, would highly recommend and I'll definitely be back

This is the first time we have been since the new owners took over and I was bitterly disappointed with the chips. They were as dry as a bone and tasted like they have been re-heated. I did not enjoy them at all. I will go again as I want to try the pies but I hope the chips are better and this just a one off. Please please do not re-heat cold chips. If I pay £2.50 for a portion of chips I expect them to be fresh.

Visited today. Bought homemade cheese & onion and steak & ale pies. Mine was the cheese and onion. It is one of the best I have ever had, and believe me I like pies. I had a mouthful of the steak and ale pie and was blown away by the flavour. The fact you can buy a pie of this quality at a chip shop is amazing. Your life will be incomplete if you never try one!! P.S. The chips were really good too

Richard is a great, chatty bloke. Place is spotless, the food is just perfect - fish is fresh, meaty and tasty. Batter is crisp and not oily. It kept my mum going through lockdown and now I’m over from Spain - I’ve been three times in 5 days! Oh, and long live their steak and kidney puddings!

These guys are fab - they opened especially for us on a Sunday (by pre-arrangement) as the order was 41 take away meals. It is hard enough to find a chippie open on a Sunday, let alone a bank hols! The food was delish and all our gang were the envy of the campsite! The portions were generous (Fish / Sausage / Chips / Pies) and the homemade veggie sausage was described as 'out of the world'. Deffo going back when we're next their way. Thanks again for a super service and meal that hit the hunger spot for our crowd of 41 !!!!

Harder and harder to find a decent chippy these days - genuinely wasn’t expecting to find such a good one in the local village . Fish was really good - and the curry sauce was delicious.

Richard and the team are not only lovely people but they make the most delicious pies ever!! Tried the made in store cheese and onion today and my mum said its the best cheese and onion pie she's ever had! We had to agree and phone Richard to say we need to order more and try some new ones next week! Highly recommended! Richard is passionate about his produce and this is reflected in the superior taste of his wares!

Top notch compared with others in the area. Chips and artisan pies are scrumptious. The fish I had was succulent with a nice level of batter. The vegan gravy was as good as gravy my mummy use to make.

Unnecessarily convoluted system for ordering food for some of the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Overpriced, small portions served by a guy with a prickly attitude, with a chip on his shoulder 😉😆

We got a takeaway and it came really quickly and the quality was very good, good portion sizes and it was delicious !!!

Had order of 5 x fish & chips delivered in middle of lockdown. Arrived right on time and hot. Ignore some earlier comments about reduction in quality which followed change of ownership, they’ve certainly got it right now, smiles all round!

We have not been to Town Street Fryers for sometime. It used to be listed in top 3 in Stockport. Steve and Julie always produced superb fish and chips. Tonight was a real disappointment the fish was dry and chips were shrivelled and cold

The dilemma of easy, good quality, good priced and hassle free catering for 40+ girls at their annual Xmas party has finally been solved! We’ve had various options in the past but this is by far the easiest and yummiest. Richard was very helpful in working it all out for us. We offered all the players a choice of fish and chips, sausage and chips or Vegan sausage and chips. We’d checked date and time with Richard previously and sent him the full order two weeks before the party. When we went to collect the order it was all ready for us, still piping hot when we got it back and absolutely delicious! Good sized portions too. Each player’s meal was in its own carton and all were labelled with the relevant team name and the contents - anyone who has had to hand out food to very hungry girls in the middle of a very noisy party will know how helpful that is! We’ve four teams and the players food for each team was also grouped together in their own big box - it took no time to hand them out. No mess either and really quick to clear up afterwards. Chips and curry sauce for the organisers too - well we couldn’t resist! Can very much recommend if you need to cater for a group.

This review sadly does not match my previous review back in 2018. We had a chippy tea on 14/11/19 as we have not had one for months, as always we have visited Town Street Fryer as we have always been more than happy with the quality of the food. Unfortunately this has not been the case on this occasion the food was actually cold & inedible.We have since found out that it has had a change of owners a few months ago & that explains everything. We wondered if it was a one off with inadequate food but since finding this out we will not be returning as they clearly can not meet the standards of the previous owner.We very rarely have take aways and wish we had not bothered at all & also wasting money & food as we have had to cook in the end.Oh & to top it off my husband accidentally dropped his phone and smashed the screen in the shop so a very expensive meal that went in the bin.Please do not waste your money this chippy is not what it used to be.

Lightly battered fish, chips with crispy bits and best mushy peas ever. Great food, friendly service - can’t ask for more! Lucky to have such a great chippy on our doorstep and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Fish soft and succulent, peas tasty and chips crisp. Service with a smile. Given up previously with fish and chip shops as they are so disappointing, soggy chips, overbatterred fish. However will be visiting again so I guess that says it all!

After 15 days eating out at lovely restaurants in Portugal it was good to end the holiday when we got back home with good old Fish & Chips with a side of mushy peas and spicy curry sauce!! Delicious!! Our village chippy is so welcoming, (apart from Richard) he is a bit cheeky! But we love him. The staff are always smiling, happy to see us and the food is the icing on the cake, finished our holiday off very nicely. Piping hot, freshly cooked, what more could we ask for.

Absolutely fantastic fresh fish and chips it had everything you look for in a good chippy we were all certainly impressed as we think it has extremely friendly staff and excellent service. I would highly recommend to all !!!!!!

Fantastic fish and chips. I am hard to please - nothing worse than soggy batter and overcooked chips, but the fish was fresh and the batter light and crispy. Chips cooked perfectly. Have been a few times since it changed hands, (the new owner is really friendly), and the fish and chips have always been consistently good. Definitely recommend.

Went to town street Fryer for a Friday night treat for the family and met the new owner Richard (very friendly chap) the Fish and Chips were fantastic and the service is great, everything is really fresh and very well cooked, wouldn't hesitate to go again and would recommend to anyone.

Coming from the coast, I’m used to pretty good fish and chips and a visit to here did not disappoint. The fish was fried to perfection with a thin crispy batter, chips perfect and the staff were super friendly and only too pleased to help.

Town Street Fryer has always been an excellent local chippy. It changed hands recently and sadly the standard of the food has nosedived. The fish was satisfactory, the mushy peas awful and the chips were just inedible. All 4 adults having the same meal were unhappy with the quality of the food. Walked passed the shop, when closed, a day or two later and was overwhelmed by the smell of rotting fish. Such a great shame as this used to be 5 star, now only 1.

I have been to town street fryer many times and have always had fantastic food, it is good quality and very tasty! Would highly recommend.

Friendly staff, good portions and the food looked and tasted delicious. Fair price and varied menu. All in all good value for money, highly recommended. Only downside is parking is difficult as it's on a small village main street with a lot of through traffic. Had to park about 400m away in a residential area. But worth it!

The Town Street Fryer is the best chippy in the area. We have never been disappointed here, the fish is fresh with a light batter and lcvely fresh chips and none of them are greasy. Great food and service.

With me being a vegetarian I have found it hard to find a genuine ‘chippy' that still does the traditional food assosiated with a british fish and chips takeaway to a high standard that doesn't resort to methods like using beef dripping.

There is always a warm welcome at this great chip shop. All the staff are friendly particularly the husband & wife team. The food is always really good & great portions too. There is a fab lunch time offer on too. Enjoy, we do.

It does the best fish and chips in the area. There's not much more to say really - the fish is cooked to order and so is always fresh, the chips are cooked in small batches and are not greasy. Friendly service, decent prices. Recommended.

We are only occasional visitors as we live 50 miles away but we do try to call in when we can. This friendly family fish and chip shop is just plain lovely. Been coming to the town fryer for a few years now for a friday treat, I alway get the same, chips, jumbo sausage with spicy curry with a can of fizzy vimto.The chips are always perfect, not greasy or soggy in anyway and the spicy curry is great if you prefer things spicy.Yes it's a little dear but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.The only downside is that I've still not got my mouth around his 12" Big Foot sausage, he's never got any in.

Always freshly cooked fish and chips lovely friendly staff and spotlessly clean. Choice of unusual and traditional pies makes this the best fish and chip shop in the locality.

I love the TSF - best chippy for miles around. What's best is that the quality of the food is always top rate - unlike most chippies which have an off night or batch, the fish and chips are always really high quality. Just wish it was open more often!

This is a really good fish and chip shop. The chips are really good, as is the fish. I usually have fish cakes and chips and this is suberb. We sometimes just get chips to eat with something else done at home. I can't think of anything they could do better.

Friendly atmosphere as it is run by the family, they always make you feel welcome and like you are their friends. The fish and chips are the best in the Marple area, crispy and not greasy. A traditional English chippy that has no faults.

This is a traditional British chippy. The owners are friendly and welcoming and always have a smile to meet you as you enter. The food will not disappoint nor will the portions. If you fancy a good old fashioned chippy tea then this is the place. We will be going back again and again. Lovely grub so treat yourself.

The Fish is crispy and well cooked,the chips were crispy and crunchy, the portion size is huge. Hope you can handle it.

Whilst driving home after a stressful day, I decided I didn't want to cook. As luck would have it I stopped just outside this chip shop and thought it looks nice, I was greeted with a smiling face and I ordered. I was absolutely amazed how clean it was inside. The chips were wrapped in a lovely bag and I took them home. I can only say that they were the nicest chips I've ever had, they come in a box which means they are not sweaty and stuck together they are perfect chips and the gravy was lush. My husband was very impressed. We will be back.

I occasionally pass here whilst going to the chemist next door and grab a bag of chips if they are open. Well worth you doing the same.

A very good quality chippy this one, with a good selection of fish and mains, lovely fried chips, my haddock was very tasty cooked in a lovely batter, decent spicy(Ish) curry sauce, pleasant staff, good service, clean place. Even the cartoon the fish and chips was served in was able to be recycled.

We spend a lot of time at our caravan in north wales. Before Town Street Fryer was established, we used to treat ourselves to seaside fish and chips when at the caravan. Not any more. Town Street Fryer beats the seaside fish and chips hands down. Fantastic friendly service, delicious food that isn't greasy, absolutely spotless premises. Highly recommended and a real credit to Marple Bridge.
