Town fish and chips in Mid Sussex

This was our 'go to' fish and chip shop but it went downhill so we stopped using it. We gave it another chance as the other shops were closed this evening and I'm pleased to say that the fish and chips were back on form!

Something to celebrate. Town Fish & Chips was great two and three years ago, then in the last year took a bit of a dip in form - though was still good. Perhaps the now long-term absence of the friendly lady owner has had an effect, but anyway, on tonight's evidence they are now back on top. We had the huge haddock chips and peas (this was for my birthday celebration!) and you could tell from the minute they came out of the fryer that a treat was in store. Once again, highly recommended.

Had fish and chips and fish cake and curry sauce last night for dinner and it was alright till I got home at 10:30 and throw it back up did not sit well in my stomach

Came to the area on abit of an exploring trip. We decided to use town fish and chips because we was told the chippy represented the town, it was awful. The woman who served us was nothing but rude. She moaned at us for ordering more food after we said what we wanted (still hadnt paid so it shoudnt of been a problem) all we wanted was to add it on our order but she moaned about having to walk back and forth to grab the sauce. Unfortunately what she doesnt realise obviously is thats what she paid to do, her childish and bitter behaviour made us feel so uncomfortable we chose to wait outside in the rain. Not only that but we said to her on 3 different occasions that we wanted fish and sausage and chips in a tray 3 TIMES SHE WAS TOLD and she still forgot the fish, i also ordered steak pie and chips no sauce and she woudnt listen and kept trying to give me mushy peas. So yeah overpriced for the lack of things they actually cook (very limited) and dont get what you paid for anyway and its done with by a person with proper crap customer service skills. Dont recommend unless you want to feel LIKE a burden for paying for and ordering their food from a fish and chips takeaway LOOOOL! If this place really does represent the town then yeah i think well pass on exploring the rest 👍

Lovely food this place was a life saver. After having a bad experience at the local Beefeater in Burgess hill after it had to close early due to overwhelmed staff. We were almost left high & dry with no food & with 40 mins left before it shut Towns Fish & Chip shop saved the day. Thank you for being so nice & not turning us away & going the extra mile. You should be so proud of your great buisness. Would definitely recommend

No welcome here. We gave order and we never even got a thank you from the man serving. The fish was a very small portion and the chips were undercooked. After paying we decided, we wouldn't go back hete again.

Visited a few times now. Good size portions and fish isn't greasy like some other places. Good value. Between this place and Jupps for best in the town!

Friday night treat for my Nan and I, rung up and ordered for 5pm and was a couple of minutes early and it was already there and waiting. Service was friendly from the ladies behind the counter, my Nan had a kids cod and chips which was a perfect size, and I had a regular cod and chips and it was more than sufficient. Will be back again and always recommend!

I purchased cod and chips for lunch, but there was so much oil on it, it was sweeping out of the box, it was so greasy I couldn’t eat much of it, total waste of money. The service was awful, the person serving me needs to learn some manners, and clearly has never heard of the words please or thank you.

I will never go there again. I went there for lunch on 4 December 2020. Never again. The service was terrible and rude. The fish was dripping in oil, the chips were undercooked. Horrible.

The proprietor is in need of a hospitality lesson, for I found him seriously lacking in this are. Wanted to leave but had paid for my fish & chips which were average and certainly nothing to write home about. Best Fish batter anywhere. Best chips ever. Great freshly cooked and piping hot food. You can phone in advance to order and then the waiting times is lessened. Just such a treat. You can eat inside and outside in the summer.

Stopped here for nice fish, chips, sausage & jalopeno bites. Fish was good but get bigger portions elsewhere, chips could have been crispier but jalopeno bites were really good.

Simply quality fish and chips. Good selection of other foods for a fair price. Not too clemy to eat inside.

Great, traditional fish and chips... Freshly cooked, good portions, good price (kids and pensioners options as well)... Would have liked a smile included in the price but they might have been having a bad day, as all the other reviews say the service is with a smile!

I love buying my fish and mushy peas from this great fish and chip shop. Always served with a smile, hot and freshly prepared, and very tasty. I come about once a week.

My grandsons and I often eat in at Town Fish and Chips, after we have had a day out. The food is always top quality and value for money. Today, the batter was just the best ever - light, crispy and tasty. We cannot recommend this place highly enough!

Some of the old kings of Fish and Chips in Burgess Hill are in decline, thankfully Towns is here to save the day. Generous portions and good fish that isn't too greasy.

Visited yesterday and had 1/4 chicken and chips within the building. The food quality was excellent and the service was very friendly and courteous. When next in Burgess Hill, I will certainly visit again. An extremely pleasant experience.

We visited for Fish & Chips, and can 100% Guarantee, they are the best in town. In fact I would say the best for miles. Highly recommended. Will be back soon

We’ve been getting our fish and chips here for quite a while now, portions are always a good size. However the last couple of times the fish (COD) has been very hard and chewy... beyond eatable

We have used Town Fish and Chips since they first opened, and generally have had no complaints until now. The price of a large sausage in better was £1.40 until about 6 weeks ago. Then the price rose to £1.60, so I was very disappointed to be charged £1.80 for the same item last week. If the rise is indicative of their other dishes, then they will be losing any further custom from me.

Town fish and chips always offer the best meal every time. The freshly cooked fish is a nice thick piece with perfect flakes and the chips are always nicely cooked and not lots of horrible bits.

The Cod and chips were lovely, not greasy at all and the regular was more than big enough for 1. Recently refurbished the place is modern and can now seat customers at a breakfast bar type seat. Wouldn’t recommend for a family to eat there and you need to be prepared to wait for your food as it is all cooked fresh and can therefore take a short while (but would rather that than have food sitting there getting dry). Excellent value for money and a good selection on the menu. Staff are friendly and efficient.

If you want excellent fish and chips in Burgess Hill this is the place to go. All food is freshly cooked which may involve a short wait, but it's worth it! Very tasty and good value too.

I have really liked Town Fish and Chips for a long time but what I saw today as I went in to order my takeaway turned my stomach! Of the four people serving behind the counter was a young man whom I haven’t seen before. He was wearing rather grubby ‘whites’ which is bad enough, but just as I ordered my meals he ran the full length of his left arm and hand under his nose, checked his performance and repeated the act. He then went out back and within 20 seconds had returned with raw battered fish in a bucket which he removed with his bare hands to pit in the fryer. Two minutes later he repeated the nose-wiping act and cleaned his hand on his jacket. Exit quick right on my part and may be a long time before I return.

We've used this fish and chip shop twice now and each time the food was excellent. Delicious fresh fish and chips and a decent portion. Good value and quality.

We came across this by accident when the place we tried was closed. Been back three times now and great fish and chips every time. We missed them last week and tried another place in town and it was not even in the same league.

We had to get fish and chips for a youth group. With this we had to pay with lose change but they were amazing. I would recommend it to anyone

Wow the fish and chips served here are amazing, been here more than once and the food really is great, cod and chips it has to be and cooked freshly to order, the portions are of a good size too, try it out, well worth a takeaway visit !!!!!

I had a quick lunch today from Town Fish and Chips. Small chips (plenty of them) and jumbo sausage in batter £3.40 very good value and tasted very nice.

Now my regular Fish & Chip shop. Very friendly, never runs out of certain choices, (like others in the town). Will not use anywhere else!

Used Town Fish and Chips for the first time last week. The chaps in there were really friendly and cooked our large order quickly. The portions were great and we felt we had really good value for money. We'll definitely use them again and would recommend them to others.

Decided to give this place a go, looked lovely from the outside although a very small shop. Ordered a saveloy and chips and mushy peas to take home. The chips were lovely, but I cannot say the same for the mushy peas or saveloy which had a strange smell and taste to it. Threw in the bin, will not be using again, very disappointed.

In the middle of town. Had better and worse in other places.They do a senior special Monday to Wednesday, but I wish they would change it from OAP special to Senior special.Many pensioners find this disrespectful. I had the special cod and chips once but it did not look like cod,to me.

Called into this chippy for first time at the end of the month and what a great little fish bar, piping hot fresh fish with great batter and chips that could feed an army, well done love the place, even made sitting in the car to eat a great evening.

The best fish and chips in Burgess Hill and surrounding. I live in Hurstpierpoint and always make the effort to frequent here. Cod and chips come in a box which is a nice touch when eating in the go. Children's meals are generous and we often eat in (they have 2 tables) The owners are really lovely people who always have a chit chat whilst waiting. Food is spot on.

Best fish and chips in 10 miles . We got a fish and chip shop less then 5 mins walk from our house , but we would rather go to town fish and chips, freshly cooked and worth thd wait . If your in Burgess Hill town give it a try , very nice .

This chippy opened a few years ago in Burgess Hill and I wold not go anywhere else around here for my fish and chips 'fix'. If you are ordering fish then be prepared for a ten minute wait as it is always cooked fresh. Chip shops are not cheap places any more and TF&C is no exception but you do get generous portions. I am sure that they use fresh fat as there is never a smell of stale cooking - so reminicent of days gone by and the batter is always crispy and a golden brown. There is a very small seating area but quite frankly I don't get that. As far as I am concerned this is primarily a take away product. The shop always looks relatively clean and you can phone and book your food in advance if you are in that much of a hurry.

Always a queue here so we phoned in advance to place our order. 15 minutes later we collected and we jumped the queue to collect. Good portion sizes and piping hot, reasonable prices. Small area for eat in.

Chips were terrible, under cooked, service was poor, man was indifferent about the whole service he provided me with. Won't go again.

If your prepared to wait while the friendly staff cook , then you wont be disappointed , lovely batter and extremely good fish , plenty of chips too , highly recommended , only down side charge for sachets of ketchup , but hey they dont come cheap so understand !

Impulsive desire to eat some fish and chips this cold May Sunday afternoon. Thinking that nowhere would be open, I remember some rave reviews about this place on Facebooks' Hassocks Uncovered Group. Despite an empty town, it was open (at 5.00 pm) and I was able to buy cod and chips. Relaxed in a comfortable chair while I waited and magazines to read. Not that I had to wait long - even though they were clearly freshly cooked they didn't hang around. I brought them home and shared with my partner (who had said he didn't want any when I phoned him... why do that do that?). They were absolutely delicious. The fish fresh as a daisy, white and flaky and the batter crisp and not drowning on oil. Yummy chips also crisp, hot and not greasy. These are the best fish and chips I have had since moving to Hurst. Wish I had found Town earlier. Hat's off all round. Highly recommended

first and last time I get fish and chips from this place.bloody awful!,chef doesn't have a clue how to cook prper fish n chips.totally soggy and undercooked basically.you still have to know how to cook decent fish at right temperature at correct timing......never again!

This is one of the best chippies we've ever tried! The fish we had from our last visit was huge with large succulent flakes and very fresh. It would put many of the more famous coastal chippies to shame. The food is never greasy, unlike, unfortunately, many fish and chips places we've tried. We have never been disappointed and have visited repeatedly. We've tried most of the chippies in the area, but this one is always our favourite for consistently good food.

Open on a Sunday when everywhere else is closed - result! Lovely food too, and not greasy. Will definitely return! Only gripe would be chap behind the counter didn't seem very happy.

I have been buying from this establishment since they opened and feel this is certainly the best in town and possibly within at least 25 miles or so BUT tonight they failed for the first time. Yes they were extremely busy, the busiest I have ever seen with a wait of 20 minutes even though we had ordered by telephone and certainly had taken their eye off the Ball as they say. The fish was undercooked and the chips were luke warm as was the sausage so we returned- they were certainly unhappy that we complained however the replacements were back to the high quality and standards one would expect. Come on guys, even when you are busy you must keep to the high standards that we are accustomed to otherwise you will get a bad reputation like some of the others have had in the area and when someone does complain do not take the attitude you took this evening - we all make mistakes but learn from them and yes we will continue supporting you as Town Fish and Chips is still the best in town!

This is a very good fish and chip shop. Be prepared to wait for your food, it will be worth it. Superb fish and more than enough chips without excess oil/grease..Sometimes small places get a bad rap but honestly if you live within 20 minutes of here it's well worth it..

Having had a long day and done the supermarket weekly shop, it was getting late so we decided to try this fish and chip shop as I'd heard such good reports about it. I was told, when I placed my order, that it would take about 20 minutes and given the option to wait or to cancel. I decided to wait, even though I could see there were quite a few customers already waiting. I'm so glad I did! Everything is cooked to order(no left over fish from lunch time sitting in the hot cabinet!) I can honestly say it was well worth the wait! The haddock was delicious and the chips were the best chip shop chips I've ever tasted without even a hint of grease or oil! The whole family agreed too! Daughter loved her fish cakes and the garlic mushrooms also went down a treat. The restaurant was beautifully clean, in fact, everything was clean and tidy and the food, it was .....just......WOW!

Their batter is so good. Non greasy, crispy and very tasty. The boxes for the fish are a good size and does not squash the contents. The fish is so succulent and wonderful. Love the place.

I don't often shop in Burgess Hill and had forgotten about this fish and chip shop until reminded by a relative the other day. As we were a bit short of time and it was mid-day, fish and chips was suggested and in we went as it was so near. Someone else was paying (my reward for being chauffeur!) so I don't know what the cost was but I gather it was what one would expect for a fish and chips takeaway around here. The chips were very nice but the fish was very good. Nicely cooked with good consistency and taste. Probably the best bit of fish I've tasted in a local chippy for some time.
