Washingtons Fish & Chips in Mid Sussex

I hardly ever get take away especially fish and chips , but due to , I’m decorating and being busy time factor ect , I went to Washington's about 3 weeks ago and was very impressed , today , still decorating same room, and no time, daughter coming to dinner, I used online order and pick up. Fabulous cannot fault it ! My daughter had a regular cid and chips. She could no way nearly eat it all. I had a cheeseburger and you can customise it, in a way I’ve never seen from any other place, ( ordering in advance) and it was gawjus, it really was , him indoors had cheesy chips and two saveloys, and had to leave a savoy as it was too much. The chips are the best chip shop chips ever. Well done and thankyou so much to your team.

Best fish and chip shop we’ve been to, staff are lovely definitely recommend!! Good prices and portion sizes too, has been a life saver while decorating our flat with no kitchen equipment 🤣

burgers are nicely done but i would say they would be a bit more cooked. Still good though, brilliant texture

Always difficult to start a new business or pick up the reins after an old owner has departed but these guys are off to a reasonable start. I have been three times now and sampled cod and chips and Savaloy and chips. My first sample of Cod and chips was OK but the batter was not crispy enough and strangely the Cod was a little dry, the chips although soft seemed under cooked and we're not at all chrisp. Subsequent purchases of Savaloy and Chips were again OK , you cannot really spoil a Savaloy can you ? And the chips were OK but again not crisp, perhaps its a personal preference, they weren't soggy just no crispness. There is a website for online orders I believe and price wise they are about average. I will be going again to this Chippie as it's close to me but my preferred chip shop by a long way is still at Worlds End BH !

Great cod and chips, freshly cooked, flaky white cod, crispy batter, tasty chips. A large portion is enough for two!

We had fish and chip from here last night. It was amazing this is my go to place from now on. The chips were perfect not at all greasy.bfish was masive and so fresh. Well done best iv had for years

Tried Washington’s after it came under new ownership. We placed a large order online and it was ready so quickly for collection. The food was great and good value for money. Friendly service and nice team in there. We will definitely be having fish and chips from Washington’s again! :-)

Fish cooked to order, great service. I do prefer my chips slightly fatter and I had quite a few ends/ small pieces of chips. All in all taste great. Haddock and regular chips £11.90

Chips were perfect. The staff were lovely.

Viv was a massive asset to this community and now its changed hands not all changes have been welcomed. The chips are good and the added cheesy chips are nice. The other items I have eaten from here have been nice. They have now included the gluten free side so the whole family can eat here. The food is quite good so we're happy.

First time trying Washington Fish and Chips and it won’t be the last!! Absolutely DELICIOUS!! Our regulars are Mr. Chippy and Sam’s but they’re both closed on a Sunday, so glad they were as Washington is truly phenomenal. The fish was moist, batter crispy and the chips were perfectly cooked. I hope they stay open on Sundays. Highly recommend!!

Credit where credit is due. We live locally but haven't been for a long time as the food had been sub-par... however, they must have new owners, we only ordered a large portion of chips and they were the best I've had..... crispy, fresh, fluffy inside, and not a single drop of oil on the outside... really, really good. That was our test, we will be back to try a full meal next time.

New owners, cod tonight was a good size perfecly cooked and crisp batter. Chunky chips were crispy. Service is quick. A great takeaway.

Friendly staff, great fish and chips and other foods, and less expensive than some of the other chippies in town! Also, free parking outside so easy to pick up your fish and chips. Highly recommended!

Had a terrible customer experience here. This is definitely one of those places where you need to be on first name terms with the owner to get served. You can stand there for a good 15 to 20 minutes while you're ignored over her first name terms regulars who can jump the queue order and get served before you even get to place an order. So you end up just giving up and walking out. I can understand if I've ever been rude or grumpy, but I've always been polite and friendly. Maybe that's the problem? The time spent waiting for your moment to be served gives you plenty of time to find the next nearest chippy on Google. It wouldn't be so bad if the food was worth the wait, but it just isn't. The chips are often soggy and brown and the fish half cooked and soggy. The battered sausages taste reheated. From my own personal experience I won't be coming back. I'd rather drive into town to another chippy who values all of their customers.

I have been here lots of times because it is close to home. Chips are more expensive for what you get than other places in town and I feel the food sometimes tastes old (or sat unsold under heat lamps for a very long time)

Very strange experience, being met at the door and being asked, "have you ordered?" Answer "no" next question, "what do you want?". Not the best fish ans chips I have ever had, in fact probably on my not to visit again list, chips were slightly under cooked with eyes and bits of peel still attached, the fish was over cooked and very dry. The thing that will stop me going again is the guy blocking the door and asking what I wanted, even before I had seen the menu. Out of 10, I would be pushed to give it a 2.

Well it may be a fish and chips shop but the battered sausage and burgers are the best. Always freshly cooked.. We don't really eat fish but can also recommend the scampi too.. Ohh and of course the chips.. So come on.. Support our local businesses and give this place a try.

Unfortunately we had a very bad meal. Having ordered fish and chips, both items very greasy and soggy. Chips felt like they had been reheated a few times in the microwave and a very dark colour. Such a shame used to be a very good place to go with the food tasting fresh. I doult I will order again.

Very disappointed on this visit chips not cooked properly ,very greasy and half the chips were black( old or on the turn potatoes) chicken very dry ended up throwing half our dinner away! Only redeeming thing was the jumbo sausage my son had.Very surprised as only three orders including ours.Doubt we will return

I could not write a new review so going to add to this one. I don't even have to get out of my car now. Viv sees me and I get the thumbs up. I nip off and walk the dog around the park and just perfect like the food, it's ready for me. Amazing. If I could give 100 starts I would. THIS IS THE BEST CHIP SHOP IN HAYWARDS HEATH. Now, I've eaten a lot of fish & chips in my lifetime so I am pretty sure I know what I'm talking about and Viv is an Angel !!!!

My wife and I had cod and chips this evening first time since lockdown it was a meal fit for a king absolutely fantastic thanks so much.

Excellent. It's not quite my local so over last 25 years only tended to go only when our very fine closer chippy was closed. Went a few times during 1st lockdown. They took it all seriously, very responsible to staff & customers. Their cod & chips was perfect, really good. Very fine chippy with excellent staff & definitely take hygiene, staff & customer wellbeing very seriously. Liked it all a lot.

I always ask for my fish to be skinned and their are not many fish and chip shops that will do that for you.

Soggy chips at lunch, very small amount of salt and vinegar in the wrapped meals, no credit/debit card machine. Cod roe and pickled eggs were satisfactory

Good staff and service but unfortunately the fish was not fresh and did not taste good. Chips were satisfactory but not much to write home about. I could not recommend

Really lovely fish & chips. Have bought from here often. Always freshly cooked, light, crispy & tasty batter. nice chips.....sausage in batter isn't bad - but their fish is really worth the trip for..... nearly always queues here. Highly recommended

Personally think these are the best fish & chips in the area. However 2 Friday evenings recently we've driven over only to see they're shut, despite opening times online stating they're open until 9pm. Starting to not want to bother making the journey next time in case they're just randomly shut again, and find somewhere more reliable...

A proper chippy. A little gem of a find

This fish & chip shop is the nearest to our home unfortunately next time we will go a little further afield. The fish didn't look or taste like cod and the chips were metallic tasting. I realise the chips are all fried but these were swimming in grease. Children's portions were tiny and overall for our large order was over priced which lacked quantity and quality.

Viv and her team have come up trumps again to cater for our camp food request. 33 portions all served hot, ready in trays and boxed for our collection at the assigned time. We won't hesitate to use them for future camps nearby. the smaller portions of cod and chips were ideal for our younger members. thanks Anne

Best Chippy in Haywards Heath period

We ordered our fish n chips, plus some kids meals and got home to eat them. Opened the parcels up and were really annoyed and disappointed to find the chips were not cooked. They looked pale and when I tried one, it was hard and waxy. We didn't even try the fish. My husband drove back to the shop and explained to the server that the chips were not cooked. There was no apology, and the lady was extremely rude. If we hadn't have been so hungry we wouldn't have waited for more to be cooked. When they gave my husband the new meals, the server made a big show of embarrassing my husband in front of other customers, insisting that he try the chips. Our meals were very average. The fish was ok but still the chips weren't very nice, but at least they were cooked this time. Won't be going back, which is a shame as it's our local chippy. Very disappointed with not just the food, but also the rude service.

Popped in for a quick snack of sausage (battered) and chips. Food was hot and tasty, although the sausage lacked much meat - think they are the value type sausages!

Hemos ido a ciudades y eran muy pegado a nuestro local "fish and chips", así que estábamos un poco reservados tratando uno nuevo.Pedimos nuestro habitual (pescado y patatas fritas, aros de cebolla y algunas savaloy) y realmente lo disfruté.El savaloy y aros de cebolla estaban llenos de sabor. El pescado era el amor y la pasta era muy ligera.

I don't think I have seen GF fish and chips since living in the UK. My better half has a friend who is also a celiac and she said the one thing she misses is fish and chips. Not any longer. Well done ladies!!!

Very nice , fish was lovely , chips nice and big, had mushy peas and gravy, staff very friendly, had a laugh with them because I asked for a "cob " and they didn't know wat it was, all in all very good
