Arrived to order.older woman in apron and hat was outside door smoking. She went in In front of me.As I was about to order I noticed that she went straight back in the kitchen(in full view as open kitchen)and started working. I asked staff member taking orders why she had not washed her hands. She said she was not preparing food!!!!. She was working in food area. I have worked in catering for many years . The first think you do when you return to working in ANY area of kitchen is WASH YOUR HANDS also she had not removed her apron.. If don't even do this what else. Think needs inspection DID NOT PLACE ORDER

We have been ordering from top chef since it opened, food is always delicious and hot, have never had any problems in all those years,

I cannot understand the negative reviews as the food we had last night was delicious. We have been ordering from here for years and have never had anything other than great food and service. The food was delivered in around 30 minutes and was fresh and hot. There was a free bag of prawn crackers and some mini spring rolls too-which were very tasty! Our order was a delicious quarter aromatic crispy duck which comes with 6 pancakes and all the trimmings in very generous portions. We also enjoyed sweet and sour prawn balls -again a generous portion. We had boiled rice on the side and the whole meal was £24 odd. This is a great local take away that delivers excellent Chinese meals in Oakwood ( for a small fee).

have been coming here over 10 years and has been excellent, i think they have been sold to new owners as you can see different staff etc and straight away things have changed. the taste and flavour is totally different. if you cant make a sweet and sour chicken balls and sauce then you cant do something special. wont be coming again which is sad.

Top chef getting very tight.!! Appears to be a change of staff yet again Im a regular and little things like free bag of prawn crackers goes down well but the tight people there now dont give any for free if you order what is a meal for one! Me and my partner have been to Top Chef for years and never had a problem, the staff have always been really friendly and the food lovely. I had a chow mien tonight and a few bites in I found a black hair in my noodles (neither me, nor my partner, have black hair) and had to pull this out of my mouth which completely put me off my dinner. I threw the hair down and chucked the rest of my plate away as I felt nauseous from it. We went in an hour later to politely complain and ask for a refund on the dish, the lady on reception was very rude and said because we didn’t bring the chow mien and the hair (???) back in we couldn’t have a refund. We said we didn’t bring it back in as it completely put us off and just wanted a refund on the one dish. She refused and said too many people have been trying to get refunds and freebies recently and that we could have 10% off next time. I said we won’t be returning. Poor customer service and maybe if the hygiene was up to standard and the customer service from the receptionist was better, people wouldn’t complain.

Really good food, friendly staff. Cash only but there's is a cash point at the co-op right next door so not a massive problem. They deliver too !

I will never from again to has gone soooo down hill they said to me on phone it will be 45 minutes waited an hour rang then they are really busy it's going to be another 20 minutes fine I rang 45 minutes later and they said voting to be another 20 minutes it better ve it turns up 2hrs 20 minutes I waited in total and I opened my food up and it was freezing cold I rang them again and said I want my Money back and by this point I thrown it in the bin as I don't want to reheat and send it someone else who has been waiting probably been wait 2 hours as well and she refused to give me my money back so me and wife went to the shop and my wife makes me wait the car and she went in and another 20 minutes later and finally got my money back by this point we have past it

Great food as always, fast delivery, hot food tastes delicious. Friendly and hard working staff. Every week excellent.

Been going here for years but ordered some food tonight for delivery and when it arrived it was not normal standard I'm used to getting from my local Chinese. The chips were hard the curry sauce was really thick and all the food was just luke warm. Very poor did not enjoy

Food and service gone right down hill and the last few months. Terrible at the moment, even the chips are undercooked!!!

We ordered food for our family tonight. My husband placed the order and it was read back to him. We were missing an item when it was delivered and we phoned the takeaway. The person denied we had asked for the item and insisted we didn't. We will not be using this place on principle. They could have saved custom but chose not to. Our order was substantial.

As name suggests absolutely top Chinese . But it is cash only

Been coming here for years and never had to complain. I received the wrong food recently and they refused to replace it. The new lady behind the counter is a serious problem for this place. Absolutely shocking

Been a regular customer over 10 years but will not be coming here again. Prices going up every 4 weeks and now a total rip off, rice tastes recycled, chicken quality poor, duck hard as rock and portions shrunk by half whilst prices have doubled. Better off getting a supermarket ready meal now.

Disappointed!! Ordered a takeaway, was charged £4 over what the takeaway menu in front of us said and when the food arrived it was wrong we got prawn toast instead of sweet n sour chicken balls ( they sent the sauce though ) Rang up to tell them and we overheard someone in the background accusing us of lying, they did send us some chicken balls and it was the same driver, he had the original delivery order ticket which clearly stated chicken balls and no prawn toast which we showed him we had! The food overall was nice, but really not happy being accused of lying or being over charged !!!

Visited here to try a new chinese. Wish i hadnt. Rice tasted horrible, chicken tasted overcooked and service was questionable.

We are a long standing customer having when ordering a delivery tonight we were told it would be less than 45 mins. When that time past and I called back I was told it would be another 20mins. When I challenged this the person on the phone lied to me about what time I rang even though my phone proved it and then said “do you want it or not”. Shameful attitude to customer. Considering when we ordered a year ago they gave us a bag of twigs to my wife’s horror when I got home. They really . don’t care about your custom, only nice when it goes well but when they are at fault they don’t care about your business. Appalling attitude Cancelled order and lost an hour and had to order food elsewhere. Will go back to our original Chinese Peony or the one in Chester Green

Have been going to top chef for years and has never once been a bad experience. The lady taking the order is always polite and friendly. The portions are good size and it's always clean inside.

Excellent food and service. My fave is the chicken chow mein (no veg). Our family loves a good chicken ball, hehe. Would rec to all my friends and family. YUM!

Just ordered 3 meals for the family. The price came £27.70, on closer inspection and looking at the menu we priced it at £24.70. We rang back and asked them to give us the latest menu, so we could ensure the price was right. The latest menu came and the curries had been hand changed to state an additional £1.50 for rice or chips, instead of the stated £0.50. While not a big increase, basically Kim (not the owner) is pocketing the difference! Not the first time but caught out in the shop! Lovely meal, but feel totally ripped off and now looking elsewhere for future orders. Check what you are paying for, before you part with your money.

Got the price over the phone £27.7 for 3 meals, instantly thought we have menu in front of us that’s not priced right. £24.7 was what it calculated up to, we then phoned back just to say “not same price but not sure if have old menu so please can you send a new one with our order”. Food delivered and on this “new” menu, everything was exact same price as the one we already had, to which delivery driver confirmed it was the same & also couldn’t understand the extra. Kim had hand written on the menu, crossing out a price stated and added on the extra. It was very apparent that she was pocketing the extra from the order. Absolutely disgusting, we had the same issue few months and challenged her and she becomes very defensive & now this. We always assumed she was the owner, until tonight when delivery driver confirmed she actually is not the owner at all & also witnessed this numerous times. Such a shame as food always nice but this “Kim” needs to be sacked, iv walked into shop to hear her scream at staff before it makes you feel so uncomfortable. I hope this gets back to the genuine owner so the relevant action can be taken.

Regular for this restaurant but feel very let down as become apparent “Kim” had been pocketing money. Ordered a family meal which come to £24.7 but over phone got quoted £27.7, we queried price and wondered ok we probably just have an old menu so please send new one with meal. Meal arrived and checked “new” menu to find Kim had hand written over it to make up the additional £3 she had charged. We queried with delivery driver who also couldn’t understand it, who rang Kim who was still arguing the additional charge. The only hand written information was over our meal which made no sense or no additional else where on menu. We are only this cautious from here as we have had issue in the past when collecting we clocked that we had been again over charged. Always assumed Kim was owner with the way she speaks to staff and makes feel very uncomfortable in the shop, until tonight the delivery driver actually informed us that he will take to manager cause Kim is NOT the owner at all. Lovely food but something needs to change with management, we will not order again as feel robbed!

For delivery or take out. Friendly helpful service, busy atmosphere, hot tasty food, consistantly really good quality.

I'm blessed that I live close to the best Chinese takeaway in Derby. If I ever order from elsewhere, I'm left unimpressed whereas Top Chef always hits the mark. Consistently super-tasty food and sometimes delivered spookily quickly. I would give six stars out of five if I could.

This used to be excellent but after ordering on a Thursday, it's not edible. Chicken curry too hot (spicy) to eat and singapour chow me in too spicy, absolutely ruined it. Really cheap chicken in curry. Really disappointed as this was the best.

We always have a curry with chips and sesame prawn toast.i ordered my usual 2 chicken curry 1 portion of chips prawn toast.meal came no chips curry cold so phoned complained brought chips eventually but had eaten curry chips weren't that nice after paying nearly 18 pounds wont be in a rush to have again after being a good customer very dissappointed

After 16 months of lockdown rule I decided to give this takeaway a try. I attempted to speak to a lady member of staff to gain some advice regarding the menu. Having seen her deliver an order to the table at the door I thought she may have popped out from behind the counter and offer help. How wrong I was, clearly fixed to the counter she repeatedly shouted " you wanna place an order?" To cut a long story short it was like the scene in "Dude where's my car?". I had to leave the informant and impolite lady and get better service from a girl at Peony House. Perfect service and advice on the menu and excellent food. What a difference. Buyer beware!!!!!!!!!!!

Decided to have a change from nine constant months of Saturday takeaway Indian meals and really not at all regretting the decision. Very nice, promptly delivered and the extensive menu will keep us going back for many months to come.

Our local Chinese takeaway never lets us down. The food was delivered in 45 minutes on a Sunday evening and arrived nice and hot. The portions are large and at £15 for a large meal for two it is good value. The delivery charge is £2. All of the food was delicious.

Ordered over the phone for collection only, pre-arranged time, wait at the door and pay cash, quick service from Top Chef, plenty of tasty food, one full happy evening meal later will be ordering again over lockdown.

We have had several deliveries from here during the lockdown - very easy ordering , delivery procedure explained - the result has been excellent food delivered to our door - they couldn't have done any better food was excellent.

First Class Takeaway food cooked fresh to order and right in front of your eyes. The best takeaway in Derby without a doubt.

On a busy Xmas Eve, checked to make sure they were open (unlike a few others) placed the order then went and collected, quality large portions Kung Po chicken tasty, ready for another soon.

A very busy takeaway restaurant. Lovely food. Reasonable portion sizes and tasty. Looks clean and tidy in kitchen area.

All cooked fresh in front of you in woks. No microwaves, just hard work and good food. Some dishes can be improved, but as a foodie - I like higher quality restaurants and I’m in love with world cuisine - it’s consistently good. Especially now I know which dishes to order that are great. The odd dish has challenged me, but you can expect that from most places. Like it.

Very nice best Chinese I've had in a very long get time

We have used this place many times over the years as we live locally, though this is my first review of it. We had a meal delivered this Friday evening and it was delivered in 30 minutes even though they said 45. The meal included gratis prawn crackers, mini rolls and wonton. We had chicken satay skewers, sweet and sour king prawn balls chicken and cashew nut and one portion of fried rice. This was more than enough food for the 2 of us and all was delicious. Total cost, including delivery was £18.60. The only downside is that they only take cash-no cards.

Really lovely people and food is always tasty. Plus they will make little changes to the dishes if you ask.

There are quite a few Chinese takeaways near to us but always use Top Chef as the food tastes great, the service is fast and the price is right.

Really nice Chinese and not bad for your money. The lady who works here is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to allergies! I'm allergic to gluten AND dairy and she always advises me on what I can/can't have. Would highly recommend.

Used to be good then changed owner. Really really awful now. Chips are re cooked. The rest isn't any good either and I'm not usually picky. Do not waste your time or money here. I live about 2 streets away and am willing to travel to a spondon to avoid using this takeaway.

We have been using this takeaway for a number of years but.....I think now enough is enough!!!! Their Beef curry is OVERLOADED with onion!!!! I picked it all out and it filled my side plate (just wish I took a photo of this). I understand that onion is part of the filling but this amount is taking it to the exstream, I'm sure there just bulking it out with lots and lots of onion. I would say I'm not going to go back there again but I will just so i can take a photo of the ridiculous out of onion in there curry. I also think the cooks have different ways of cooking because there either to watery or to thick. The prawn crackers are always stail and not fresh. The Chinese lady who serves you has always an attitude and rude. Like I said I will order 1 more time ONLY to get a photo of the amount of onion in their curry to show people, after all this is what you are paying for because it's not the meat because there is so little of it. Find somewhere else because there is better Chinese takeaways than this!!!!!!!!.

When i have a chinese takeaway i always go to top chef, it is very local to me and the food is pretty good for a take away.

Looking for a good takeaway with excellent food. This is a great place to start. Friendly staff, and a wide range of cuisine. Good home delivery service. This is only a takeaway, cannot eat in.

Pasó por aquí el sábado por la tarde como en ningún otro sitio, llegamos a la casa estaba abierta a uno de los mejores dulces una agria pollo estilo Hong Kong que he tenido en mucho tiempo! Masa luz preciosa y un delicioso sabor y el pollo estaba jugoso y suculento. Yo también tenía arroz frito de huevo que estaba muy bien hecho y unas patatas fritas y salsa barbacoa, todo muy sabroso y demasiado justo para mí!

Decidimos hacer una comparación entre este y el llevar otra cerca. Absolutamente no comparación, Top Chef gana sin esfuerzo. Excelente sabor, buena calidad y cantidad. Piezas de buen tamaño real de pollo, ternera o cerdo. Buena selección de verduras y huevo frito muy sabroso arroz. Felicidades al personal de Top Chef.

No estoy seguro de si ha habido un cambio de dirección, sin embargo, nuevos chefs recetas o me he convertido en muy decepcionado en la calidad de la comida del pasado año. Mi familia y yo hemos usado top chef por más de 10 años, solía ser sabroso y lleno de sabor. El cambio de comida ha sido realmente decepcionante hasta el punto de que ahora vaya a otro lugar aunque este es mi local. El pollo es más duros y malos, las salsas son tan grasosa y salada y en color que me pregunto si ellos han cambiado de tarro salsas?

Food item missing on delivery I then phoned up and found that they weren't interested,That being the case I will not be using them again. The food was much below par.Otherwords CRAP!

We normally use another local Chinese but they have put their prices up so thought we'd tried different ones in the area. I must say I was initially sceptical but was greeted with a smile and they served our "usual" food, which however in my opinion tasted much better. The food is cooked in front of you at record speed and we also got given some spring rolls and prawn crackers for free. I'm really impressed and would use again. The food tasted really fresh and not greasy, the rice and noodles were cooked perfectly not stodgy. We had crispy beef in peking sauce, s+s chicken hong king style, veg chow mein and egg fried rice which we shared between two. We couldn't finish it as the portions were huge and it was cheaper than our usual Chinese takeaway.

Telephone manner is disgusting their attitude towards customers stinks! All food is pre cooked and bland.

After trying a few different Chinese takeaways this is our favourite. Ignore the review someone has put about its being rubbish and their pizza being terrible they don't even sell pizza- clearly they are reviewing the wrong takeaway!Lots of choice always hot and big portions.They do delivery only downside is they only do cash only if you do go in and collect its not an issue there is a cash machine at the shops :)

Star rating I put is wrong. Shud have been one star. 1.5hrs and still not arrived. We are five minutes walk away and had they said there were issues with delivery we could have picked up.wont use them again and will recommend freinds don't.

Firstly, reading the other reviews, the guy who complained about pizza has got the wrong place- they only do Chinese food. Delicious barbecue ribs, smoked chicken starter great. Food is always very quickly delivered and the chips are great!

Myself and a couple of friends went here to get a pizza, the staff were horrendous. I would not speak to my dog how they spoke to us. No please, thank you or manners whatsoever and barked the price out to us. Let me move onto the pizza itself. The only words that describe it are "utter crap". We ordered a meat feast, but I think we were expected to use the power of our imaginations for the meat. It was a disaster. Sloppy tomato sauce on an undercooked base - the cheese must have been thrown on from three miles away.Somebody needs to show them how to make a proper pizza and teach them some manners whilst they are at it. Disgusting. Would never go back here. Terrible is being kind. Complete waste of money. Avoid.

Large selection of Chinese Take Away food which is cooked on order or whilst you wait. They also provide a home delivery service for a minimal charge. Just be aware that they deal in cash only. Parking is available outside this establishment.
