Tom Browns Brasserie in Newark and Sherwood

We had lunch here at Gunthorpe and was very disappointed. My mother and my wife had steak pie with a sauce that tasted like disinfectant. I had the fish and chips. The fish looked grey and also tasted funny. We mentioned this to our waitress and she apologised and offered us a free dessert or drinks. We ordered coffees. Not the waitresses fault she was very nice and did her best. This was the last meal I had with my mother before she passed and thank the chef for making it memorable for the wrong reason. Dont think I will go back.

We regularly eat out at Tom Browns it’s our favourite restaurant and we heard it was closing after Saturday 31st August. So we decided to visit even though I was recovering from very recent knee replacement surgery. We were a little disappointed the meal was not up to the usual standard . Our starter parfait ( pate) was extremely mousse like and the brioche was cut too thick. 3 doorstep slices. No choice of scallops or prawns was disappointing. Then to be told there were no fillet steaks we felt we’d perhaps wasted a visit as we always chose this option. So my husband chose a lamb pie which he said was filling but the supplied gravy was too runny. I chose the chicken dish but asked for potato bravas and Tenderstem broccoli with a jus. I was given a mix of green vegetables and a thick gravy not a jus. I then chose a dark chocolate fondant with a clotted cream ice cream and peanut brittle. The fondant was perfect but the peanut brittle was very crumbly and more like a butter tablet not a brittle. To top it all the bulb in the main chandelier in our dining room exploded showering glass all over the floor and the diners table next to ours. Luckily our food was not affected but the drama interrupted our meal and caused chaos in the dining room whilst the shards of glass were swept up from all over the floor. Not quite the romantic quiet meal we had planned.

Came up to Nottingham for a weekend away with my wife... Popped in for lunch on the Friday... Food and service was bang on.. Went in for a beer on Saturday and got chatting with a few locals and manager Adam.. felt very welcome.. off the back of that we booked Sunday lunch, we'll we wasn't disappointed, the belly pork bites are to die for... Fantastic venue, lovely staff, top notch manager... they close tonight for a refurb but if I'm ever back this way in the future this is definitely a place I would revisit.. Absolutely banging.....

The food here is always excellent as it was today - The place was incredibly quiet - I understand the restaurant is getting a refurbishment perhaps that’s the reason . Quite exceptional service from young Ryan. Friendly ; knowledgeable; good on conversation ; professional and brought out a desert treat for my wife’s birthday- thank you young man. Overall this restaurant delivers and I look forward to seeing the makeover . Thank you

We booked for afternoon tea and the service was exceptional. We were greeted with a massive platter of succulent sandwiches and rich desserts. Unlimited drinks were included in the plan and both the coffee and the orange juice were delicious. I will note, however, there were a flew flies around our table and the whole establishment is not very accessible, with many various steps and different levels around the building. Overall, though, it was a top-notch meal.

Once again we were not disappointed with this restaurant. The food was absolutely superb! We both chose the fillet steak and it was delicious. It was one of the best steaks I have ever had! The service was also excellent, friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and it was a great way to celebrate my birthday. Thank you to all of the staff for making this evening special. I can't wait to book again.

Absolutely wonderful meal. Met by the very attentive brasserie waiter who was informative and knowledgeable, treated us like guests not customers. Food was outstanding, not rushed and very tasty, best meal out we’ve had for a long time. Will certainly visit again. Great value for money too. Highly recommended.

Amazing food and pleasant service

We were a bit disappointed with our recent visit. I have been going to Tom Brown's for years and have had some wonderful meals there. This time, we left early due to a few reasons. •Our drinks (Aperol Spritz) were a bit watery compared to others we've had. •The staff seemed a bit inexperienced. •My steak came out well done on one end and rare on the other. The steak had a lot of salt on it, to the point of it not being a matter of opinion, It must have been seasoned 4-5 times. •The truffle fries were just regular fries (also very salty) with truffle mayo. I would expect more from a £5 bowl of chips. I ate the food because I was hungry and didn't think the replacement would be much better. We had planned to spend the night there but after the issues we had experienced up to this point. We decided to cut our losses and move elsewhere for the night.

Great venue with great live music!

We used to visit Tom Brown’s quite frequently and looked forward, after a long gap, to returning. The service was pleasant and professional but when our order arrived, the vegetables were seriously undercooked to the extent that our knives couldn’t cope with the broccoli florets and green beans. We mentioned this to our server who passed the message to the kitchen and we were told the coffee we ordered would not be added to the bill. This was some redress but how much better our meal could have been.

Tom Browns provided us with the perfect dinner after our Wedding Ceremony. They gave us options and helped us choose which area of the restaurant to sit in and how to best lay out the seating, and it was easy to pre-order our food (and add-on extra desserts on the day). It was a great atmosphere and the service was great - we loved the attention to detail of the team and the food was excellent as always. We love going to Tom Browns and this special occasion did not disappoint!

This establishment has it all! A warm welcome Whether you are dining, or just fancy a drink. Excellent beer and a good choice of wine. Food is superb. Marry this all together and add in the always smiling staff results in a place you want to return to.

Just read reviews, just wonder if we were at the same restaurant. The service was appalling. Only 2 staff and one was her first week. Ate outside. Floor had used napkins and generally scruffy. Asked for condiments we didn’t get and cancelled desert after long wait. Had taken visitors, so was all a bit embarrassing.

Relaxing atmosphere, friendly staff, great food.

I had cod loin main course, it was slightly undercooked and tasteless. I will not be rushing back, definitely gone downhill versus previous visits.

Excellent food and beautifully presented. The chef Tom is obviously highly skilled. What we thought was going to be a pretty average local pub food was cooked and presented in a manner that would be expected in a high class restsurant. Prices were fair, service good. Nowhere else to compare in the area for us.

Been to Tom Browns before, years ago now, but had good memories and decided to revisit to celebrate my husbands birthday. Unfortunately I have to say that I left this time completely underwhelmed and will probably not be returning. What was once a venue that felt a bit like a special treat is now essentially just another gastro pub. It wasn't one bad thing, but just lots of little disappointments that left a rather 'meh' feeling - being presented with a different menu to my partner, the steak I ordered rare coming out med/ well done, the triple cooked chunky chips that come with the meal coming out as a bowl of fries, the red wine jus being soooo salty I couldn't eat it, the pie being a shallow ramakin with a puff pastry lid, the general décor being tired (ripped wallpaper) and the WIFI down so paying was done by keying in all my details into a machine against an email to confirm the booking. Like I say none are massive issues that couldn't be solved...but enough to make me leave this review and suggest anyone with a memory of how it was, to lower your expectations.

I came with my boyfriend and we had the best time!! we met adam and he was truly wonderful, really professional and lovely service. we were served by a lovely young lady (can’t remember her name) and she was super. defo back again!!

Went for my daughters birthday, the food was delicious and the staff were brilliant and all our cheeky requests were no problem for them and it made our evening very special , Thank you to the kitchen and front of house for a wonderful evening!

Visited recently with a group of friends, food was fantastic and the service was one of the best i’ve received in a long time. Super attentive, quick and friendly service from a lovely young lady, would highly recommend. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area, will be returning in the future.

Ah what can I say about the Tom Browns roast. One of the best pub roasts you'll get anywhere and I've tried a few. Piles of uber flavoursome meats, roast potatoes so good it'd make your granny sweat excellent gravy and of course te faultlessly polite and helpful staff. You guys are the roast for me 🤩

Very clean inside and out. Food is delicious and there is a great range of drinks. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Great atmosphere. There is a quiz every other Wednesday which is lots of fun. Highly recommend a visit!

Went for lunch. Lovely outdoors seating area, looks quite fancy. The food price was very reasonable for a menu that on the surface looks fancy. I would have given the food a 5 due to value for money but it lacked any seasoning and frankly, taste. Due to the price, I'm not expecting fine dining seasoning but could they have spared some salt and pepper? There was none. The real problem I had was the service. The staff were lovely, but the service was slow. We sat for a while waiting to get even a menu before deciding we would go and get one ourselves. I ordered some beer and water when I ordered the food, but 25 min later, the food came and no drinks. A further 20 min in when we had finished the food, our drinks arrived. I saw other customers getting frustrated too. Some people had the orders quicker than others.

A fine location to see cricket and enjoy the atmosphere

Came in for lunch on Friday lunch time, it was quite quiet but we couldn’t fault the food. The sea bass was excellent and my friend had the fillet steak. He said it was one of the best steaks he’s ever eaten. Will definitely be coming back soon.

I have been coming to Tom Browns on and off for over 20 years. I took my children yesterday and was very surprised at the service but also the quality of food. I had roast pork. Food was cold, potatoes soggy and carrots undercooked, Yorkshire pudding hard and burnt on edges. My daughter had sea bass that smelt rather fishy, overcooked. I don’t know if the chef has changed but this definitely wasn’t the standard of this place I remember… very very disappointing

I visited Tom brown on Friday the 5th of April with family for an evening meal, to our delight there was a wonderful singer to accompany our meal. The food was so good too, I had one of the best fillet steaks I’ve ever had cooked to perfection. We’ll 100% be returning soon!!

We came here for the Mothers day Brunch. Despite the atmosphere being great with live music. Unfortunatly the service was very slow and the food was not worth the cost at all. Sandwiches were very bland and the bread had started to go stale. We were sat waiting for a while before anyone came over to offer us some drinks. There was one memeber of staff who seemed very on it, all credit to him! However, the rest seemed to lack personable skills. Overall, the worst experience I have had at Tom Browns- it appears it has gone very downhill since I last visited over a year ago.

First time visit not disappointed. Had the Sunday Roast (beef), came pink and melted in your mouth. Lovely food, good service.

A bit of a disappointment. The steak wasn't great as it hadn't been seared so wasn't great, it was as if it had been cooked on a really low heat. The water was warm. We swapped to a bottle of sparkling water, which was also warm. The table was also very sticky.

Great food, starter was good, sauce a little too salty but that's just something that was a minor observation... Steak was perfect, fillet, medium rare... Peppercorn sause great balance, rocket with a hint of parmesan..... Waiter Tom attentiveness and service 5 star..... Overall a great night.. With well cooked food.... Overall would visit again....

Went for my mother and father in laws 50 wedding anniversary. The food was fantastic, especially the steak. Staff were very busy as the restaurant was full.

Looked in, and was too expensive so we left. Place looked clean and nice and the staff was nice too. It was still empty when we called in.

We had reserved a table for 4 at 7.30pm on 16/8/23 to celebrate my brother's 30th birthday, which we had disclosed when booking. We were seated promptly and the restaurant had 7 tables (including us) occupied. Drinks orders were not taken for at least 30 minutes. Food order was placed as soon as we managed to order drinks as we had made our decisions in this time. Our starters (2 plates) did not arrive until 9.15pm and our main dishes did not arrive until 9.30pm. Bearing in mind we had arrived for our reservations at 7.30pm. We quickly noticed that there was only 2 people on the shop floor, the floor manager and the waiter/barman - who appeared to be running tirelessly to attend to everyone's needs. There was no other staff on the restaurant/bar at all. We realised that all other tables were receiving slow service also and many complained and expressed their frustration. We had brought cake for the birthday milestone occasion, which appeared to have not been stored appropriately (despite asking to do so on arrival due to fresh cream involved) and it was basically half melted by the time we came round to it - which we needed to prompt to receive as by the time we finished dinner (we ate everything in 20 minutes as we were starving - I am 9 months pregnant and my mother who is in her 60s was also famished). I prompted that we required to wrap up soon because my brother is not from the region and needs to travel an extra hour to get home - this was why I booked an appropriate dinner time. Food was good but the service was very slow indeed. There appeared to have been a management issue as this surely could have been anticipated? Also, it would have been nice to have our extremely long wait acknowledged (by being more attentive, asking if we needed more drinks - especially since it was a very warm summer's evening), particularly as we were celebrating an occasion and the jovial mood rapidly evaporated as hunger and frustration took over. The hot summer evening meant that all doors were open, and flies became somewhat of a problem. Dishes were not cleared up promptly when groups left as there was no staff. This did not help with the already soured ambiance. Overall we spent 2.5 hours in the restaurant and we spent 35 minutes of that eating and the rest waiting. It was a real disappointment to celebrate a nice occasion. I'm sure this is not the standard but it has truly tainted our first impression of Tom Browns and I don't think that we will want to visit again for a long time.

Visited on the 29th of July. What can I say, the place is lovely along with all staff that served us. The food was out of this world. So fresh & there was definitely no complaints from our party. We do live in Leicester but we will sure to visist again when we visit family in Nottingham. Thank you all again for the fabulous service.

Booked the brasserie for a lunch party for my sisters 30th. The setting is beautiful right next to the canal. The staff were so helpful with all of the booking, sorting high chairs in advance and taking our meal order. On the day, the food and drinks were great but again the service was exceptional, from the manager to our waitress. We had a cake delivered which was no problem and the waitress managed our table with no trouble at all even though it was boiling hot and we weren’t the easiest party as we had a few kids! Thanks so much to all for making it a special day.

Sadly dreadful. Sat at table 19:15, waited a while for drinks order, yet more time for food order. 19:40 starters arrived. 20 minutes later wave repeatedly to ask for another drink. Gave up waiting for main course at 20:55 and went home. Used to be such a great place.

Booked for Sunday lunch and had to wait for our table 20 minutes with a half empty restaurant and a small toddler .. beautifully cooked lunch but ordered 5 desserts and after an half hour wait asked if they were coming to he told they had forgotten to put the order through.. service is very slow which is odd as there are many staff looking for something to do... 😳

We needed a quick bite on Mother's day and everything was booked up. This venue let us have a table at short notice (prior to the booking turning up) where the one next door didn't (even though there was no one in there yet). Really friendly place and staff. Lovely food and service.

A lovely place with great food and friendly and helpful staff. Well worth a visit. Food was presented beautifully and was very tasty. The only downside was that we were repeatedly asked whether we wanted more drinks which became a little invasive. We all received a tiny bottle of gin, as we were all mum's on Mother's Day, and a 20% voucher off another meal before middle of May. What's not to like?! I hope to use my voucher soon 🥰

Had an excellent evening at Tom Brown's Japanese Evening. Excellent food, great service. Would be nice to have a comments sheet to give a proper review and make the evening interesting. The beef and. sashimi ware excellent. The pork cheek was lovely would have preferred the same wasabi coleslaw as with the beef. The coconut cake was delicious. Greatest evening can’t wait to see what’s next. Wine pairing lovely, would definitely paid more. Totally recommend this restaurant

Hi, Been there twice in two weeks now [for Sunday lunch] the food is excellent, really tasty, but the service is so disjointed, the staff are really friendly and helpful, and the main courses are delivered in good time but if you want a drink or anything after that i suggest you go to the bar, seems there are too many staff and no organisation, we would return though.

The starter of Korean fried cauliflower was excellent- the rest less than average. The roast chicken was unpleasant - microwaved veg - raw broccoli & generic gravy. Cherry Bakewell dessert was a slice of vanilla sponge with some cherry drizzle sauce and one cherry- not impressive. Won’t be rushing back

Went to Tom Browns today for my daughters birthday. Booked via website. We were allocated a nice table and drinks orders came reasonably quickly. Ordered starters within 15 minutes, which arrived after prompting after 30 minutes. 45 minutes after we arrived. The place wasnt busy....
