Toll Bar Fish & Chip Shop in Derbyshire Dales

Let’s be clear. This is the best chip shop that is not on the coast we go regularly and never any problems. Really enjoy it. Friendly staff. It’s busy, really popular. And can’t fault it usually. However if you go anywhere near closing time then they won’t warm up any pies so you get what you get. Is sort of understandable However they’ve changed pies, now have teeny thick dry pastry pies, with dry ‘filling’ fairly tasty, presumably some ‘premium’ brand that have got it all wrong. Now I’m sure the defence will be high quality meat etc locally reared but if the pastry is too thick and the sauce inside all but gone then it doesn’t really do the quality of the meat any favours. And I don’t care about cost. I didn’t even notice if the price had gone up. I just don’t want to drive home and then be disappointed when I open what is normally an excellent takeaway. I’ll come again but back to the fish for me

We love this place never fails to please best fish and chips we’ve had. Been 3/4 times and every time the fish and chip have been on point. Curry sauce is great also. Cooked fresh

Worth travelling to compared to various other places in the Peak District I tried. Very light, crispy, non-greasy - in fact, best fish and chips I've had for a while. Generous portions. Ketchup on the counter to help yourself to rather than having to buy tiny sachets. Not at all pretentious either - good food done well. Generally puts a lot of other fish and chip shops to shame. If they can do it, why can't others? Parking takes a few attempts up and down the road but if you are lucky there may be some spaces in the small car park opposite. Don't let that put you off though - it's definitely worth it!

This chippie used to be a favourite when we lived in the High Peaks 25-years ago so we were delighted to find out it is still excellent. My wife was over the moon to get a traditional fish cake which was always her first choice from childhood plus sixty years. There is a small car park opposite to get off the busy main road.

I finally got round to visiting and my wife and I both ordered mini fish, chips and peas. They were fantastic and I can honestly say that I have never tasted better. We are already looking for to going again.

Found this place today while waiting for our son to come back from a caving trip. It's one of the best chippy's we have ever been to, The food was amazing, we will defo visit again when we are back in the area 😋

Well it has always been a case of the best fish & chips either the toll bar or alports in pwllheli, well the decision has now now been made . It’s the toll bar🤗🤗🤗 loverly & fresh & pleasant staff. Would suggest if you not bothered don’t go Fridays unless you really have to go it’s always very busy.

opened the wrong door to get in greeted rather tersely by a guy in a red t-shirt one let it go realising it was that time of the month poor chap HINT don't put an OPEN sign on the back door. Correct entrance, greeted by a very young lad obviously learning the trade very Elizabeth Gaskell/Charles Dickens poor lad anyways ordered the food got the food was very very good the curry sauce was excellent fish moist & hot and the chips fantastic but wait he says one asked for two cans not toucans and both were missing having been affirmed they were in "in the bag" make sure next time is the motto on the whole it was a good effort though and just to be polite to the guy in the t-shirt two neurofen & water or get an hysterectomy ya grumpy ****

Lovely Fresh Fish Goujons and Chips! I have driven past this quaint little place hundreds of times, but tonight was the first time that I stopped. I ordered the fish goujons and had seven of them that were freshly cooked and tasted absolutely delicious. I also ordered the soft and fluffy chips, but a regular portion was too much (unusual for me as I have a big appetite). I will definitely be stopping more regularly on my trips to Manchester. Really excellent quality food and every order is cooked fresh.

Visited this place today and wow delicious haddock & chips, friendly staff. Will definitely go again when in the area. Wish you were our local chippy.

I’d like to start by saying that Harry, AJ, and Peter are absolutely wonderful people and I’ve never felt so welcome just wandering in to my village chippy! We moved to the village about a year ago, and a visit to the Toll Bar is an essential part of our week! We all love it, the chips are always perfect and so is everything else! The fish is sublime, and if you haven’t tried the battered pigs in blankets, or the Yorkshire Fishcake, then you are missing out! Also, the beer is ace!

I cannot remember having fish n chips as good as these. Fresh, fried to order, haddock was sublime and flaked beautifully, chips were cooked to perfection, mushy peas were really tasty (and traditional tasting too - so many chippies have lost the art of a good mushy pea) and portion sizes were perfect. Add to that, staff were really friendly. Not too expensive either. Same price as my local chippy. Wonderful and thank you to the staff at the Toll Bar.

Absolutely beautiful take away food and amazingly friendly service. Cooked to order while you wait so piping hot and delicious.

We was Looking forward to trying the Toll Bar as it had come highly recommended but it was quite disappointing. The fish was lovely but badly let down by the rest of the meal, the chips were very very dry ( not fresh at all) peas were a little hard and bland, and the gravy was extremely watery and tasteless. Such a shame as the fish was super!

It is just the best, we travel 15 miles once a week to go there. Always spot on,fish is cooked to order. At busy times prepare to wait but it's busy because its good!

Blimey, what a find… A quick google search of fish and chips near Foolow resulted in us finding the Toll Bar fish & chips shop. Two of us had mini fish & chips (still a very good sized portion) with curry sauce and it was lush. The staff were really friendly and happy and couldn’t have been more helpful. Special shout out to Melissa! There’s a lovely little brook next to the shop to sit and eat too so everything is freshly cooked and piping hot.

This place is great, superb staff and food. I came here a while ago and got the chicken nuggets and chips. They were amazing.

Outstanding! On a wet, dreary, summer Saturday afternoon this was the perfect treat! We drove just over an hour to check out if this place was as good as we had heard - OH YES IT WAS!!! Incredible, the best fish and chips I think I’ve ever had. Chips were nicely cooked, firm but gorgeously stodgy, the fish was delicious, batter wasn’t too much, crispy and golden. We will definitely be back, shame about the weather this time as would’ve liked to hang around longer. I can 100% see what the fuss is about, will be recommending to everyone.

Now sell gluten free sausage and batter which made my year when I visited on Thursday. It tasted delicious and will definitely be back for more. Finally a chip shop that sells gluten free products. Thank you

Great food, great location, great price! We learnt of the Toll Bar Fish and Chip shop as it was mentioned as the starting point for a national trust walk from Stoney Middleton to Eyam. So we had food before the walk - it is in a lovely location, there is a small green area next to a stream just by the Toll Bar; benches and seats available. Food was cooked to order and of good quality. Highly recommended!

Oh my goodness the amount of times over the years we have drove past here and never thought about getting a takeaway…Well we have a lot of catching up to do.We called in here on Saturday evening after a few hours out with the dog & before driving back to Stockport. Great service & Covid-19 safe, the fish was chunky white flakes & massive & the batter was so light & crispy the chips were not greasy at all and they make a good cup of tea which is always a bonus with myself being a big fan of a good cuppa.We drove up to Eyam and sat in a small park on a lovely evening and thoroughly enjoyed our food.Great work guys and we will look forward to returning again & again. Also we will spread the word to friends & family.

I've hated fish and chips for the first 46 years of my life, that is until I found the Toll Bar back in March (was starving, had no other option.) Today I travelled all the way from Cheadle in Stockport to once again sample their delights, and was not disappointed, so top marks for consistency; the fish is sublime, crispy batter and flaky, meaty cod, and the chips are just as lovely, not at all greasy. Thanks to Harry and Vanessa for being so kind, and I will of course be back again very soon. Our very best regards, Matt & Finn.

Best fish & chips everWe are staying nearby & wanted good fish & chips. Read the reviews and were not disappointed. Good friendly service. The fish & chips were seriously the best we have ever had. Good sized portions, tasty fish, light crispy batter, good classic fish shop chips and generous portion of mushy peas. Excellent. Just wished I wasn’t 200 miles away as it would be a regular. Will be back when next holiday in the Peak District

The food here is OUSTANDING..as well as the cleanliness and the friendliness!!! Its a 'must' visit as you won't be disappointed. The portions are huge aswell and the food.. so tasty ! Such a lovely family run chippy. AMAZING .

Been 4 times in the last 6 weeks, 80mile round trip. usually enough to save some for 2nd meal later. In the sun a great place to seat and eat in a small walled garden area

Called today, first time since start of the recent lockdown, it's a 50 mile round trip for me. Fish & chips superb, good as ever. Sat in the back garden on me own, it was a tad nippy in that wind today but the food was piping hot, warmed me up, with a hot brew to finish off. Friendly service as always.

I was in the area with work and could not pass up the opportunity to call in. The two young men working were very pleasant and polite. I ordered fish, chips and gravy. Northern boys love gravy! The food was cooked fresh to order and my word it was fantastic! The fish was massive, I reckon I could have sailed across the Atlantic on its back! The chips were fresh and the gravy just topped it off. Really happy customer. Quality is worth waiting and paying for! We called by at Stoney as we hadn't had fish and chips from the Toll Bar for a number of years and it was a glorious day to sit and eat them in the little village garden next to the shop. They are still top class, the fish are huge and the batter is wonderful. The portions are also big. Excellent service as well. Only trouble is the parking. If youre lucky enough to get parked close by then fine but its on a corner of the busy main A623 road with no parking as the village is very narrow and tightly spread out along the limestone dale.

Food is great but they do bang it out as they are very popular and often get your order wrong, happened to me a few times now. Nothing more disappointing than waiting in the cold for 30 minutes and going home just to find that mini fish and chips you paid for is just a small portion of chips. Get them to read back the order you have them and be sure to check your order before you leave and everything should be fine.

Yesterday, We were welcomed by a young gentleman and lady, who were very polite and provided excellent service. I ordered chips to be slightly crispy and chicken bites. The chips were cooked just as requested and were great and the chicken bites were phenomenal, no fault in the slightest. Will be returning on many occasions, im certain.

Visited today at lunchtime. Covid safe; order in the shop and wait outside at the back for the food to be prepared. Good portions, food looked and tasted excellent. Would go as far as saying it’s probably the best fish and chips in the area!

Been frequenting this Fish & Chip shop since the mid-70's. Has always been a great chippy and pleased to report nothing has changed. Quality fresh fish and just cooked chips. No frozen rubbish here. Yes, parking is a bit difficult at times but worth it.

Called in today for fish cake butties after a soaking dog walk....never occurred to me to check for bones in a fishcake but I should have . 3 of them over an inch long, my throat is still sore and scratched. Quite nice though up until the point I stopped being able to breathe

Just stopped off to have some lunch while we're making our way up to the Lake District. The Toll Bar Chop Shop was recommended to us by a local in Bakwell. So glad we took their advice, this place is is in my top 3 chip shops of all time. Freshly cooked to order so everything piping hot, friendly staff. When we're staying near Bakewell again will definitely be going back here.

The Toll Bar fish and chips are truly second to none. The battered fish is superb, crispy coating, succulent fish and is so tasty. The chips are crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. A fantastic culinary experience.

Seriously impressed with the fish and chips (and mushy peas). The best I’ve ever had! Great portion sizes - I had small and my boyfriend had large which was plenty! Fish was extremely fresh tasting and not greasy & the chips were lovely. Really impressed with the social distancing measures too (having been shielding since March this was really important for me!). I can’t wait for next time!

Logistical nightmare!Yes good fish & chips, certainly on the right side of posh F&C, lots of places do them these days and this would be among them. Nice building and service, price fair.Why no mention of?A long wait for food and woeful, in fact dangerous parking options.There isn’t any outdoor eating area as described, we just saw two small benches both occupied and we didn’t want to stand and eat on the very busy road side.No facilities so anyone travelling or struggles with disability like my partner to plan wisely.Would be happy if it was my local chippy otherwise it’s challenging, maybe a bit more honesty in the marketing approach in order to help folk know what to expect.

Decided to take my motorcycle out for a ride into the beautiful Peak District. Riding through the village of Stoney Middleton I spotted a small fish and chip shop with an unusual design. Discovered it to be the only Grade 2 listed chippy in the UK.I asked for a Yorkshire fish cake buttie but they had ran out so opted for fish and chips with curry sauce, I am pleased I did. They were amongst the best I have tasted, beautifully cooked and the curry sauce was fantastic.Very helpful and polite staff, even let me use their toilet!. Great food, great staff, lovely location, I will be back with the misses, thanks, a nice surprise.

I am from a seaside resort and these fish and chips are hands down better than anything I have tasted. They are so good that in a 7 day holiday break we visited twice!!

The Mini parked outside attracted me to this lovely Chip Shop housed in an old Toll House. The Chips were wonderful, hot, crispy and tasty. Great place.

Was here on holiday and called in on 24/7/20. It's not often you can say that was one of the best fish I've ever tasted or that was some of the best chips I have ever tasted. I had to write a review! I know it’s a fish and chip shop, but it isn’t just an ordinary fish and chip shop you find between home bargains and Asda in your local town... it’s situated beautifully and I felt so fancy going in there! We were having dinner somewhere else but we had to go in , we had a fish cake which was the best dam fish cake I ever had! £1.60 is all we spent there what a treat! You must go!

Went to butchers in Stoney Middleton for one of their amazing pork pies and whilst there decided to try Toll Bar fish and chips. On moving to Belper from the East coast 10 years ago I have failed to find any decent fish and chips. This has now changed! The quality of the food here is excellent. The young couple (brother & sister) working on the day I visited showed how to deliver excellent customer service. They are a credit to their father who owns the shop. They advised a little wait as oil had been changed but kept us entertained with conversation. The wait passed very quickly and was well worth it. This is a must visit fish and chip shop for anyone in the area.

Not been in since last March. I called today for fish & chips, the chips were really good & the fish was cooked to perfection, beautiful moist & tasty flakes with crispy thin batter, best I've had in a long, long time. I shall be calling regular again. The two young fella's were very good, helpful & sociable, while also keeping the current Covid-19 distancing in place. Top chippy again, thanks lads. Worth the 50 mile round trip.

We discovered this place whilst on holiday. Being from Norfolk (near the coast) we aren’t short of good quality Fish & Chips, but this superseded. Staff were friendly, food packaged well & overall good value. Fish was fresh, batter unbelievable & chips crispy and fluffy. Very impressed!!!

We have travelled length and breadth of the country in search of the best Fish & Chips, and we found it here; certainly the best in England! Fish was really tasty, crisp and fresh and the chips were great better than homemade chips. Staff is very friendly, had a great chat with them. We would definitely visit again.

We had heard so much about this place and last week finally found the time to go and try it for ourselves... what a waste of time money and energy! The fish was totally bland and tasteless and so where the chips . The peas where just acceptable. I smothered mine with lots of vinegar but the vinegar was so weak I couldn’t taste it . The portion size was good but what’s the point if everything tastes so bland .. our local chippy in Tupton would knock the spots off this one .. people don’t believe the hype it’s poor.

I only stumbled on this fish and chip shop on my Google news feed stating it was one of the best in the country and with it being within a fairly short distance I thought it would be a good idea to try it out.

Drove an hour to try this fish shop, after seeing they’d won awards online. Wow it was so worth it. We had fish, chips and mushy peas. Everything cooked to perfection. Staff very friendly. We will be back!

Thoroughly enjoyed the massive piece of beautifully cooked fish tonight along with a very good sized portion of chips. When I first saw the price board, I thought it was a bit expensive, but when I saw the portion sizes I realised what good value it was. Not only good value and fantastic fish we even got a lindor chocolate while it was being cooked.

I came in tonight ( Thursday night) and had a lovely warm welcoming, me and my partner had fish and chips and it was the nicest I’ve had, the portion size was huge and the fish was lovely and white, with lovely light batter. As well as the amazing food whilst waiting we got asked if we’d like a gin and tonic, with a choice of gins and also a Lindt chocolate on the house. The 2 servers, which I believe are brother and sister we’re very talkative and lovely to chat. A lovely family run business who couldn’t do more for you if they tried. The owners should be very proud parents!

Moving to the area in the spring so thought I would check out the local chip shop while visiting over Xmas period. Reviews were good so I was looking forward to trying the food. It did not disappoint!! Staff were friendly, offered myself and another customer mulled wine...nice touch. Fish cooked to order and was perfect, crispy and light, lovely chips as well. Loved the curry sauce too......proper chip shop style and portions were big. Look forward to this being my local chip shop.

Having driven past this chip shop before, my girlfriend and I finally decided to pop in and order some food. To say we were impressed doesn’t do it justice - we have never tasted fish and chips that were so tasty and well presented. The service was exceptional with polite staff members. It is safe to say we won’t be going to any other chip shop again!!

I’d have never thought I could enjoy queueing quite as much as I did this evening. The owners and staff welcomed all its customers with such warmth and bonhomie that we were all sorry to leave. And, most importantly, the cooking really is best in class. Absolutely wonderful fish and chips... I had a long drive from London and this place was a short walk from the Cottage we were staying in... The gentlemen was about to close the shop, but he put some fresh fish in for us... The girls behind the till were also great... Thanks guys!

The fish and chips are better than Rick Steins in Padstow. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this fish and chip shop. Definitely the best fish, and service I've ever had in the UK.

I phone and made a order for £16 and when I arrived I was given a lame excuse . I just wish they had told me they were busy and I would have respected them for being honest. But no I got a lame excuse.

The Fish and Chips here are absolutely knockout. Not had better anywhere. The owner is also super friendly and lovely to have a chat with (if it’s not busy ). We stopped off here on a journey and we wish it was closer! So so so so so good. Keep up the amazing work

We got a large chips and two sausages and curry sauce to have between two people but it could have definitely fed three. The chip portion was huge, they tasted great and there was crunchy bits. Definitely cooked to perfection. Sausages were delicious as was the curry sauce. The service was speedy and it’s so nice to see that they use cardboard cartons for the sauces instead of the polystyrene you usually get. And it was all for a total of around £6.50. What’s not to like!! Can’t wait to come again. Keep up the good work.

really good fish and chips - good ordering system - your food is cooked to order which you do when you join the queue. Fish is traceable back to a specific boat, and the chips are proper chips - chunky and tasty. There is even an off-licence with Tollbar branded beer form a local brewery!

Every couple of weeks time allowing we drive the 40 mins from Mansfield as we love the Toll Bar Food & area. Today as always the food was bang on. Thanks & see you soon.

Visited based on reviews on here, as a former chippy owner I was underwhelmed by the produce on offer. The chips were brown and dry, I was surprised they were happy to serve them. They were inedible. Fish was ok. Not a good experience

Visited toll bar last week for the first time in about 8 years.wanted to see if it was as good now as back then. Standard cod chips and peas,the fish was huge but to be fair I don’t look for the big fish I’d rather have quality but this was both.top quality fish and chips and perfect mush peas.my reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 is the fact they don’t use beef dripping.it has to be beef dripping for me or it ruins the fish.no denying the quality of the food though.the fish was of great quality.

Lovely little spot which is very popular. All our food was cooked fresh as we ordered it which made it taste a lot better and remained hot whilst we ate. In a great location with seating around a stream and a lovely little village. The food was perfect and couldn’t be faulted, and the staff were fantastic and friendly and couldn’t do more for us, we will definitely be returning! Thank you all!

The leaflet says, Enter and strangers, leave as friends and by God it's true to its word. The fish was fantastic, white, fluffy and mild, "not too fishy" I cant stand "fishy fish" tastes off to me. haha. Chips were chunky and brown with perfect mushy peas. Eaten while sat in the sun by the stream.... Bonus is that they use, wooden "proper" forks and eco friendly packaging. Perfect!

Stopped by on Saturday lunchtime and can honestly say that they were the best fish and chips we've eaten for a very long time. Cooked fresh to order, large piece of fish beautifully cooked with a nice crisp batter, not greasy. Chips were fantastic and again not greasy. Excellent service with a smile. We'll be back!

We are from Kent but were up in Peak District on holiday saw the good reviews on trip advisor so thought we should pay a visit as we are fish n chip conoisseurs ! Glad we did as this would be in our top 5 best fish n chips ever. Fish was lovely white & tasty amazing chips with friendly service. Huge portions biggest I have ever seen. Shame its just a takeaway but they did give us a booklet with local info which had a suggested place to drive too which had a good view we were too greedy & just eat them in the car but we will know for next time......We need to go back.....so good.
