100% this is the worst service I've ever experienced in Japanese restaurants. The tall guy oftent standing in the till seems like to throw salmon dish and the bill in our faces. Never gonna back!

My go to place 6 years ago when I was a student, Im so glad this place survived COVID and is still here today. Delicious Japanese fare, for meat eaters, vegetarian and vegans. The service is top notch and prices are resonable. Honestly, I could eat here daily and be happy 😂

Came here for a quick lunch. Lovely to find simple and unpretentious traditional Japanese diner here in London - it instantly made me remember my visits to Tokyo. I had the curry soba and it was delicious, the spices were mild but just right. Prices are typical for central London but with no expectation of a service charge you’ll end up paying less than you expect.

It was mediocre. The salmon sashimi was good. The rest of our food lacked flavor. The service was adequate not great. We won't be coming back.

I'm ashamed to say I've been going to Chinatown regularly for 10 years but have never been to Tokyo diner - what a mistake! As soon as you go inside, you're transported to a japanese cafe. They bring you a cup of hot tea and dried snacks when you sit down. I had the bento box, which came with sashimi and great pickled salads. They have a commitment to sustainability, so they don't serve tuna out of principle. They also believe in staying true to their Japanese roots and don't allow tips or service charge, which is a nice change!

Authentic Japanese food and it is tasty. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and location

Food is mediocre at best. Anyone who can cook Japanese family meals can do better. But location and service are good.

Lovely traditional Japanese restaurant in the heart of London! Very nice atmosphere and friendly staff. The food was delicious and serving was very quick. When we sat and before we ordered they served us green tea and treats on the house. Prices were normal and we didn’t wait too long for a table. It’s first come first serve but people usually finish their meal and go so tables are available fairly quickly. Highly recommend if you want to try something different with original tastes.

We went without a reservation on sunday night and we were able to get a table for four. We had the best katsu curry! We love that they had tofu katsu curry as well which our vegetarian friend loved.

I've been going to Tokyo Diner for over twenty years now, and it's always a treat. They do proper Japanese food, and everything is always delicious. Don't forget to try the tsukemono!

came here once on the suggestion that it is a very authentic Japanese restaurant and have been back 5 times in the space of a couple months! affordable, delicious and quick whilst remaining a healthy option - what more could you want?? ごちそうさま!

White rice with egg was excellent. Miso aubergine also great. We arrived at 6.10 on on a week day and there was no queue but 10 min later there were at least 5 groups. Service is very quick!

The Katsu pork cutlet curry was so dry and chewy. I am surprised with all the good reviews. Service was quick. The restaurant was too small and the table we were given was too cramped.

A hidden gem in the middle of London. The food here is so delicious and they serve big portions at a very reasonable price. When you come in, you will feel the coziness of the venue, and you will be greeted with free warm tea and little snacks. The staff members are also very polite, and food is served quickly. I cannot recommend this place more!

The atmosphere is great, looks like it's run by a Japanese family. They offer free tea and free rice. Hope no-one is taking more then they need. Extremely warm people working there. We need more of such places in the world. Also, it is cheap compared to other places in London.

Not the best Japanese food I’ve ever had but ok for the price. The ambiance was very nice. There were some times that it felt like I was in Tokyo and would forget I’m in London. The ambiance is authentic, the food was authentic but not the service(?) Although the servers were Japanese, there was no omotenashi. As my friend and I came in, a member of staff looked at us and said “two? There” pointing at a table. I was expecting they would also keep the Japanese service style as even the cheapest restaurants in Tokyo, such as Saizeriya or any izakaya, do. My friend and I paid £15.50 each.

I think I witnessed what the other reviewer mentioned today, and I was also one of the customers said to have queued up 'wrongly' after a long time of waiting. I also noticed that a staff member in fact led a few customers in from our 'wrong' side, before putting us at the back of the other queue. I also felt very weird, but still chose to eat here as my friend insisted. The food was just okay, not appealing though. Not as good as the other two nearby Japanese restaurants. Perhaps because my mood was strongly affected already.

Please don't even try!!! A totally ridiculous and racially discriminating place!!! Have been waiting under freezing cold for 30 minutes but a rude staff claimed that a total of almost 10 of us queued wrongly, and forcefully combined us by putting us at the back of the queue on another side of the door entrance. The staff refused to explain nor help clarify but just directly said that 'our side' was queuing wrongly. Not a single human being can explain nor accept this sort of uncivilised 'customer service'!!!!

Uhhh I thought I was in Japan. The food was so authentic. It's small, the menu isn't very substantial, but it's mega traditional and authentic. Really. I recommend 1000 times

Excellent traditional Japanese food. The stuff was very helpful and fast working. The atmosphere felt like we were in a restaurant in Japan. A bit pricey for our Greek standards, but good food and service quality make up for it by a lot. Great work!

This is a brilliant place for an enjoyable dinner. The staff were so welcoming and offered complimentary green tea and smiles. The chicken katsu don was delicious. Food intolerances were immediately taken into account. Highly recommend!

Not sure how Tokyo gets 5 star reviews. Bang in the centre of town. Their food should be great. Saying that my worst meal ever was in Chinatown. The staff were very nice if a bit tired after the Chinese new year day. I’ve had many many superior bento boxes. Also the place really needs a revamp. It’s looking very tired. I like the printed eco tuna ethics etc but that’s not enough. I won’t be back there’s too much good competition for japanese near by.

Went for dinner here, the atmosphere was cosy and the service good, the food was good but I thought the rice could have been better, it was a little dry, overall lovely experience. Good spot for a casual meal.

I came here to try out their Gyudon and its probably the best Gyudon I have tried in London. They offer large portion size free of charge (Regular size and Large Size are the same prices). Unlike other Gyudons I tried in London, every pieces of beef in the Gyudon here are delicious and not over-chewy, the Gyudon here is not too wet too, which is good, hence 5 star for the food. The restaurant itself is built with a Japanese wooden construction theme, which stands out well in the middle of London, scoring 5/5 for atmosphere of the restaurant. Furthermore, they don't take tips or add service charge to the bill, thus 5 star for the service. They only open after 5pm on most of the weekdays and their website says they dont take online reservation, but their restaurant is quite big and I had no trouble getting a table walking in for dinner.

Good food quality, delightful sushi, friendly staff, and tipping is discouraged. We will definitely come back.

The food and interior are very authentic. We visited Tokyo Diner in 2020 and 2022, both times it was amazing. The staff is very polite.

Very good for gluten allergies, as they have a guide of gluten contents of the dishes in the back of the menu. Also very attentive staff and quick service. Rice is very nice.

I had a chicken Katsu curry &rice, However, it was very cold. I can not understand. I can still understand if it is lukewarm. WHY COLD? And even though they say “We do not take any tips”, their food is expensive. I mean their price is like included tips. I've never been to Japan so I can't comment on authenticity, but this is the best Japanese restaurant I've ever tried. Every dish I have tried so far has been splendid and I keep going back to the salmon nigiri. The staff is friendly and they all speak Japanese. It is very tight inside but food comes fairly quickly so you're never waiting for too long.

This place is wonderful. It's been open for years and years and it has good food in generous portions. Although I regret the absence of the onion don (gone for years now) it still has lots of good stuff, friendly staff and doesn't allow tipping. I heartily recommend it.

Lovely food, staff and experience! We had the tofu katsu, chicken katsu and the udon ramen. We are everything! The service was quick and everyone was so polite. I would definitely eat here again! 👌🏾

We had super high hopes for this place as it has super good reviews. The food was alright though. We had several bento boxes, the Udon soup and the tofu curry and it was all just very average.

Small, Japanese diner - it has a very cosy, warm atmosphere. The service was great - free Japanese green tea + refills. The waiter was very kind and helpful with the orders, we had specific dietary requirements which he tried his best to meet. The food was okay value for money, would recommend to try out. They also offer free larger portions of rice.

日本の方へ向けて 2階席は日本料理店のように静かな雰囲気でした。 海外なのにこれでいいのか！？と思うほどですが、こちらとしては落ち着いて食べられる空間だったかと思います。 ちなみに1階席はにぎわっていました。 日本の居酒屋より少し静かなレベルです。 ざるそばと親子丼を食べました。 親子丼は絶品です！ 安定の美味しさでまるで日本でご飯を食べているかのようでした。 ざるそばはコシもう少しあってほしい、つゆがあと少し濃かったらなと感じましたがイギリスでこれだけ美味しくあれば最高です。

Food was good, tastes like many Japanese restaurant I've been to in London but the atmosphere is the best - reminded me of when I was in Japan! The decor and the seats were totally authentic as the staff are mainly Japanese/ can all speak Japanese :)

Love coming here for lunch for sushi and udon noodles. Conveniently located near Leicester Square tube station. Small yet quaint and romantic. The toilet is upstairs.

La Chinatown di Londra è sicuramente uno dei quartieri che nonostante la sua popolarità tra i turisti regala ancora alcune chicche di cucina asiatica veramente autentica. Questo è il caso di questo ristorante giapponese che si trova proprio in uno degli incroci principali del quartiere. Abbiamo mangiato qui con alcuni amici appena tornati da un viaggio in Giappone e hanno confermato i sapori assolutamente autentici dei piatti. Atmosfera da locanda giapponese e piatti abbondanti e caldi. Sul menù si trovano principalmente portate non esattamente convenzionali per gli standard europei che la cotoletta Tonkatsu, i soba freddi e il curry di carne giapponese. Prezzi assolutamente nella media per essere a Londra(oserei dire quasi economici). La fila fuori e d'obbligo:)

I love this place and their food. I always have the chicken katsu curry (its so tasty- the best i have ever had), my partner always has the chicken teriyaki bento box (also amazing) and we also recently tried the chicken don katsu curry which did not disappoint, SO tasty!! They don't take reservations but you do not have to wait that long - even if you have to wait though, it is really worth it. We have been dining in this place for a very long time and i recommend it to everyone.

A small place with a line at the door, no reservations accepted. Not a very comfortable place, tables are too close to each other, it is said that the best chicken katsu in London is here, which I disagree with. It is ok and fair, just that. One thing I don't like here though is that they charge the gratuity and to me to be charged that the service should be at least amazing

Nice to discover an amazing authentic Japanese restaurant in the heart of Soho! Using Japanese ingredients to make delicious dishes with a very varied and appetising menu on offer. My favourite was 揚げ出し豆腐。The broth was incredible, just like I was back in Japan 🥹 No wait time needed for a table, and staff were very organised and quick with taking orders. Will definitely be visiting here again! 🫶🏻

Pretty authentic and delicious Japanese food. Somehow did not have the same footfall like some other places even though it is in a very busy Touristy area . Service was attentive and courteous. We had a bento box and a curry udon for mains and shared an appetizer of chicken karaage. Everything was fresh and scrumptious. The karaage chicken was very crunchy and delicious. They also don't add the optional service charge like other places in London. Would visit again if I return to the area.
