Just been into the Toby Carvery (also known as The Britannia) located in Cleadon Village. This place is well worth a visit as the carvery is really delicious and it has plenty of choice, there are also vegetarian and vegan options. I think it was all really good value for money. I will highly recommend this venue. For anyone who hasn't tried it, it is worth giving it a go, I think you will be very impressed. Their Tuesday quiz night was also really good, it was varied, fun and internet proof enough to make it virtually impossible to cheat.

On a recent visit to South Shields, my husband and I decided to have breakfast at the Britannia Cleadon Village. Being a Toby Carvery the food should be fairly consistent, not the case. We had to rifle through many plates to find a reasonably clean one, bacon was barely cooked, the hash consisted of burnt bacon and potatoes, no cheese or onion!! There was no jam or marmalade. Not a good experience, we won't be visiting again.

I went to Toby Carvery for breakfast this morning. The food tasted nice, especially the sausages and the handmade hash. The staff were friendly and approachable. I've tried their carvery before and really liked it. Toby Carvery is good value for money and I would highly recommend it.

Nice pub. Friendly crowd and top quizmaster. Why not pop in on a Thursday night and find out for yourself?

I went to Life of Riley on Sunday/Monday morning 4th/5th August 2024. We used to call it Spiker Riley as in the past we have had attempts to spike our drinks. The other night we were there till 02:30 and the security in there were absolutely fantastic. One guy inside spotting any trouble and two guys on the door responding. The guys were professional polite and strong when required. My wife and myself felt totally safe as there is the usual mix of Bumpers on Hairy Mikers night. Excellent work guys.

My wife and I went to this pub/restaurant for a belated valentine meal on Saturday the 15th of February. It is a nice and cosy pub with log fires and a warm atmosphere. We arrived early so we could have a drink in the bar before our 7.30 dinner slot. A portion of the bar was reserved for bottomless brunches, so finding a seat was difficult. We eventually found one near the log fire and I went to the bar for drinks. It then began. The staff behind the bar were on average about 18 years old and in my opinion didn't have a clue what they were doing. I ordered 2 cocktails from the 2 for 1 menu and a lager. The guy serving me didn't look like he knew what went in the cocktail and couldn't find the ingredients, but after about 10 minutes he got there. We went to the restaurant part for dinner to find that we were the only couple put in the back area with a huge family with a lot of unruly children who were running all over the place across ever seat and table and the adults did nothing to deal with this behaviour. We eventually asked to be moved elsewhere and were relocated to avoid an argument. We sat and sat for 20 minutes until someone came to take our order at which point we were told there would be a little wait for food as they had a big group in which was the family in the back area. I ordered food and waited. They had ran out of a certain item so we had to choose something different but that wasn't a big deal. 55 minutes past before my belly pork starter arrived which was nothing but fat. We then sat and waited and waited for the main course until I eventually asked the waiting staff how long it was going to be, at this point she said that I was told there was a 2 hour wait for food which of course was not true, they said a little wait. I told her that if I had been told 2 hours I would have gone somewhere else at which point the supervisor who had originally spoken to us came over and I told him I was going to pay for what I had and leave but he assured me he was going to push our order through and that the 4 guys in the kitchen on a not so busy Saturday night were doing their best. However there was another table of 4 people who had waited as much time as we had yet others were coming in after us and had gotten their meals before us. Eventually the food came which I enjoyed but my wife thought was mearly passable, they offered us a free drink, which I declined so our desserts which were quite nice were given free for our inconvenience. I was also not charged for the fatty pork starter. The waiting staff were really nice but on a whole if you go when there is a larger family in or they are moderately busy, good luck getting food within 2 hours because the kitchen staff can't cope, and the bar staff are a bunch of kids that don't know what they are doing.
