I have been coming here for a few years now with my wife, we haven’t been for a little time due family bereavements and all that goes with it. So last Sunday we came back again and were a bit disappointed that the menu had changed,no longer was there a small breakfast with toast and jam and complementary cup of tea for about £9.50 each. Instead a set menu of large breakfast for £12.75 minus tea and toast, so a large breakfast consisted of 1 extra sausage and bacon. The black puddings were half the size as they were. The manager advised 2 pots of tea at £3.50 each. The pots came with 4 cups of tea in each so only needed one. I told the manager about my issues and he just shrugged his shoulders and said it’s a new menu I’m sorry you don’t like. So from paying less than £20 for both breakfasts a year ago we paid £32.50. I think they will miss their local business on those cold damp winter mornings in front of that lovely crackling fire in colder months.

A disappointing Sunday lunch. My roast chicken lunch was the poorest such lunch I have had the misfortune to have. There was nothing of quality. The lumps of chicken lacked the flavour to be expected, and there was no skin, the cauliflower chese was insufficiently cooked and lacked a good white sauce and the gravy was thin. All in all a disaster, in an echoing, acoustically terrible venue.

Visiting Devon, we came here with my Mother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law, and her 3 dogs! Whilst well behaved they did bark a few times at folk passing by, but we weren't made to feel they were a nuisance which was much appreciated (they are dog-friendly so we were told they're used to it!). We all had different options from the Brunch menu, and all were very good. My hubby and I had the scotch pancakes (one with bacon/maple syrup, and one with berries/creme fraiche) which were delicious. The eggs benedict was declared really tasty, as were the additional skinny fries ordered by two of our party. The staff were all very friendly and it's a nice cosy spot in a good location, just down from Haytor. A much enjoyed lunch.

We regularly come here as an escape and it is amazing! It is one of the most relaxing and comfortable places for a spot of lunch or just a coffee and cake. The staff are very friendly and the food is always excellent. I have to say the pie is my favourite! I would recommend to everyone!

Food ok what a shame about the disrespectful parents. I was astounded at the mess that parents of young children left, food all over the floor, rubbish over the tables one group actually thought it was a good idea to change the babies nappy at the table and then put the nappy bag with dirty nappy on the table !! Not what I want to experience whilst trying to eat. Staff were pleasant although it wasn't until I had left that I realised we both had exactly the same main dish but were charged different amounts !

Came here for dinner as a birthday treat - we both had the vegan burgers which were fantastic - it is so easy to get this wrong but we both really enjoyed them. The staff were pleasant and the food came out in sensible time. It was a shame that our burgers only came with fries - we were expecting a salad garnish of some kind, maybe even a bit of coleslaw. The cheeseboard was a little lacklustre. Would come back though, nice enough and a pleasant experience.

Myself and some friends have had breakfast here several times over the last few months as a treat after a night camping. As usual I booked a table ‘for breakfast’, today we arrived, the place was empty and no staff in sight. When someone finally arrived she gave us a brunch menu. We asked for the breakfast menu and was told it was for residents only. We left and won’t return. A shame as this was our go to place locally for breakfasts, lunch after walking on the moor and family meals in the evening

Ok we came here for a few days to explore Dartmoor. We had a light night for lunch, sandwiches, coleslaw and salad which was very good. Decided to eat here for dinner but that’s when it went downhill. No atmosphere in the restaurant, very few people which is a tell tale sign, menu very limited so ordered the roast pork. Actually very tasty but Luke warm. It’s not terrible but not great either, Staff were pleasant, friendly and professional. 3 stars as it really is average, won’t be back tomorrow night, going to try some where else.

Booked 6 months ago for a special family occasion. Were asked to pay £10 a head deposit. In January. 2 days before the date, we were contacted and asked to pre-order all of out 15 meals. Bit of a red flag at this time of year. Always wary of this as some food can be plated up and could have been sitting since Friday. Menu was poor and expensive. 3 small sticks of halloumi for £6, tiny slice of spinach tart for £8, falafel "salad" for £13. I work in hospitality so understand the current struggles. But this was verging on ridiculous. Despite pre-ordering, one meal was totally forgotten. There was then a really long wait between mains and deserts (also pre-ordered). In the end it took 2 of us asking where deserts were on two different occasions for them to arrive. We purposefully booked the table for early in lunch time service as half the party had long drives home but service was really very slow. Only asked if we wanted drinks once about 20 minutes after we were sitting down. They did bring out the cake I'd bought in earlier and didn't mind some decorations. Staff aren't rude, just slow and unorganised. Additionally there are deposit and bill issues we are raising privately. Also be aware a 10% is added to your bill automatically. We won't be back anytime soon despite being local. Disappointed that we paid so much for such slow, poor (albeit friendly) service.

Popped in for dinner on Monday night and left without eating. They have changed the menu and it’s dreadful. We should have guessed it had gone down hill when we were the only ones in there. The man who gave us the menus said it was the ‘new’ menu and was ‘typical pub grub as no one wants burgers and pies anymore’ I beg to differ as it only had about 10 dishes on it and included a £25 steak, Peas a la francaise(!) And a salt and pepper squid bun…no me neither. What a shame. We’ve been going there for years but won’t be back. Other people may not vote with their feet the first time they go but I doubt many will return. We went to the packed Claycutters on the way home and had fish pie and a chicken burger…it was delicious and proper pub grub!

We had to eat here as it was the only place open on a Sunday night locally. We disliked the youth hostel style boxy extension with view of car park and would have left ordinarily without eating. The service was ok but the food was poor, clearly a frozen burger, tough and a soggy low quality brioche bun (they still advertise as a gastro pub, this definitely wasn’t). The menu choices were really poor. At breakfast in the rock inn the next morning we all had a good laugh about how dreadful it was. The waiter was ok, bar was unstaffed, I believe there is a nice terrace but we didn’t have access to it.

Sunday night dinner: Having read the reviews we had high hopes of an impressive meal. Very disappointed. Menu limited to roast dinner, burger or fish& chips. Opted for the burger which was acceptable but not memorable. Restaurant ambience was reminiscent of a youth hostel. Service was pleasant and helpful and there were a good number of customers - probably because there are not many other options on a Sunday evening in the area, as we discovered. Won’t be rushing back.

Very disappointing Sunday roast lunch. The meat was OK, the yorkshire was indedible, the roast potatoes were slightly undercooked and not at all crispy, cauliflower cheese tasteless, cabbage undercooked and carrots either frozen or tinned. Sauces not offered, brought out when requested, but insufficient for the table. Service delivered in the style of a man who had been dragged in on a sunny Sunday that was supposed to be his day off. This review very similar to one somebody posted last September - clearly the venue did not take that one to heart. To be completely fair, people that did NOT have the roast and chose from the menu enjoyed their meals.

Being a tad harsh giving 3 stars. Tin, Pickle & Rum (part of the hotel) is usually a great place to eat though the service can be a bit slow. But good food, great surroundings, good value. But.... we breakfasted there today and someone please tell the chef how to cook scrambled eggs, cos mine was dry, rubbery, and basically the life had been cooked out of it. Pretty dreadful, to be honest. I know it's personal taste, but scrambled egg should be just a little bit sloppy to bring out the richness. And use real butter. If the hotel is worried about undercooking eggs (I understand why) maybe ask "How do you want them cooked?" On the whole, I'd give it 4 stars but I'm fussy about my scrambled eggs. As you probably guessed!!

My husband, myself, plus golden retriever, lunched here yesterday one day after Devon had some horrendous weather. What a tonic, we now feel warm and cosy, and well-fed too. Every member of staff was smiley and welcoming, and the service was superb. Couldn’t be any better. Our meals were delivered promptly, even though they seemed to be very busy, and again nothing could have been improved on. Our only slight hiccup occurred after we left and walked the dog through to the Visitor Centre, and were in need of a poo-bin. (Sorry to mar this review with distasteful detail!). Having failed to find one in the front garden of the Moorland, a most kind gentleman plus companion directed us to the necessary receptacle in the back garden. Turns out it was Mr Steve Furness, Mr Big! How special is that, the top man taking the trouble to keep customers happy. I guess that’s why this place works so well.

This hotel has a fantastic position on the edge of Dartmoor and with its internal furnishing rates a star before you even consider our meal. The staff are excellent and the service they provide is worth another star. So they have 2 stars before you have even eaten a morsel. My wife had Beef Bourguignon which was excellent and good value for money. Unfortunately I chose the Cannon of Lamb on mash potato with vegetables. The serving portions were very small, which made this poor value at £21. However what really let it down was the quality of the lamb. I was suspicious when the meal arrived minutes after placing the order. The lamb was slightly pink and looked perfectly cooked its texture was great but it lacked juices and taste. We had no sweet but as I was still hungry I had cheese and biscuits. A good choice of cheeses and biscuit although a slight mix up meant a soft cheese was supplied instead of a hard cheese. My wife had Irish Coffee and I had an Americano which were both excellent.

We ate here last Saturday, having researched the area in advance for a good dog-friendly pub conveniently located for Haytor. We were staying in (relatively) nearby Chagford and my daughter and her husband came over from Exeter so that we could all enjoy a pre-lunch walk up to the rocks. The Tinpickle and Rhum - within The Moorland Hotel - is literally just down the road from the Haytor Visitor Centre car park. The food was reasonably-priced and perfectly acceptable, the four of us all selecting different menu-options. The staff were friendly and efficient. It was pretty busy when we ate (12.30) so it was important that we had booked ahead. Recommended as an unpretentious eatery in the heart of Dartmoor.

What a waste of money! Very limited vegetarian and vegan options - only one vegan. It was a curry that tasted like it was straight out of a Sharwoods packet and the rice it was served with was definitely microwaveable packet rice! They served what they called naan breads with the curry but on asking them to check if they were vegan guess what, they contained dairy. One of the vegans in our group is dairy intolerant so if we hadn't asked it could have been a big problem, maybe even fatal. After asking four different waiters for our olives that we ordered for starters, they eventually turned up half way through our main course. This is supposed to be a four star hotel, it's a shame it has a one star restaurant and one star waiting staff

I also ordered a salad and somehow ended up with a sandwich, it was very tasty though (I didn't want to send it back and wait for a salad to arrive as we were out with a young child and family) Would still recommend to eat here and would visit again but perhaps more staffing to offer a better customer service would be good.

We have been to Tin Pickle And Rhum in the past and enjoyed the experience. Now that we are going out we wanted to return. I wish I had read the reviews beforehand We had the same experience as a number of your previous reviewers. The service was mediocre. To have one round of drinks, a one course lunch and tea/coffee and one ice cream took 2 hours 30 minutes. The last straw was when we asked someone who appeared to be in charge of the shift, for the bill, we never saw him again nor anyone else with the bill! Eventually, we went to the bar where we obtained the bill and paid it in a few momentsAs far as the food was concerned, we had two small fish and chips, one large and one ham, egg and chips. I think that my fish and chips had been standing for some time. There was a skin on the top of the mushy peas and the tartare sauce was warm! The fish had been standing on top of the chips so they were soggy. All in all, not the most enjoyable visit.

I've always loved this venue for its setting and great customer service. Most recently i have been let down. I had grit in my goats cheese salad which I tried to ignore until I felt like a bit onto a bit of stone. When reporting this to the waitress, she responded by telling me that they had already had a complaint about the salad, this begs the question as to why the salad was not washed after the first complaint. After closer inspection, a week later I realised that my back tooth had been cracked. I reported this to the venue, never to get a response... I'm sure the owner of this venue would be saddened that standards have slipped. Hopefully they will wash the salad from now on however, teeth beware.

We are a group of local dads who love camaraderie, having a laugh and putting the world to rights.......... over breakfast in the local cafes around Bovey Tracey, particularly Tinpickle and Ullacombe Farm. Last Friday (11th June), we had a table booking for breakfast and arrived at 9am. We asked reception if we could sit outside (the sun was just about poking its head through clouds). Reception said this was not a problem. However, we were then told by a waitress that we couldn't have a table outside, as these would not be available for use until 11am (if they had been busy - understandable). I felt this was a bit petty (as reception had said we could) and asked another waitress who said that this wouldn't be a problem! However, the original waitress then returned and said that we could sit outside but said 'it could take a while to take our order'!! We did sit outside for 5-10 minutes and sure enough, no-one came to take our order, which at this point, we decided to drive off to Ullacombe Farm, where you get a warm/friendly welcome and the best breakfast locally. Tinpickle need to sort their customer service out - it is currently appalling (poor communication). It is a fantastic venue in the summer to sit outside. Unfortunately, word gets around quickly locally and come the winter (when hotel guests dwindle in numbers) they will be grateful to have local people coming in for breakfast and lunch..............sadly, a group like ours (up to 8 paying adults) will be sitting in front of the log burner at Ullacombe!

We are regulars at Tinpickle and it has always served one of the best breakfasts in a fabulous setting. The setting is still wonderful - eating in the garden - and the service is top notch but the quality of the breakfast has dropped since pre lockdown. Specifically the bacon and hash browns were very overcooked - not crispy just rock hard - and the quality of the sausages seemed more 'economy' . Also the price is now £10 plus tea/coffee. It used to be under £10 including a drink. That would be OK if the quality had been maintained but unfortunately that wasn't the case on this occasion.Tinpickle's local rival - Ullacombe down the hill - is now much better for breakfast albeit in a farm shop setting rather than a hotel. We hope this is just a post lockdown blip and we will return

We visited in the summer for breakfast. It was absolute shambles then ( see my other review) . We thought we would give them another chance as the location is handy .How wrong we were !!Yet again no service , left waiting and very mediocre food.I am sure it was not like this 3 years ago ? New restaurant manager? So that will be our final trip .Save your money and time and go somewhere that values your custom.

Ended up at this place by accident - the lady in the local Visitors' Centre recommended it as it was 5 minutes walk down the road. We arrived about 2.30pm and there was only one other table occupied but the log fire was still going strong. Can't fault the food, or the service by our friendly waitress. Highly recommended stop off in Dartmoor. We will be back!

We decided to treat ourselves to a nice lunch out before second lockdown began, and were delighted the hotel were still open to serve a delicious late lunch for us at 3pm in the afternoon! We both had the lamb shank - oh my goodness, so tender and tasty, and the starters were delicious too. We were seated in an area where there were beautiful views over the moors. Lovely attentive and helpful staff. We hope to be back when lockdown is over.

This little gem of a restaurant forms part of The Moorland Hotel. A light and open plan interior with a very cosy atmosphere is ideal for lunch tea or dinner after a brisk walk upto Haytor Rock or a more extensive walk on the moor. Covid regulations are taken very seriously. Service is friendly and efficient and the food is excellent. Starters are around £6 and mains £10-£15. Good sized portions and beautifully presented. The hotel looked nice but we were not staying so cannot comment.

We have used this venue many times as its a good place to sit outside with a nice view, and the service is usually pretty slow but Sat hit an all time low and can only be described as appalling. We received half of our parties drinks quite promptly and the rest failed to appear , apparently they had 'not gone on to the till'. They turned up eventually. After about 45 mins no food arrived, when I mentioned this they assured me that we had in fact already received it! We were getting ready to just leave when I managed to speak to a manager who said that the food was 'almost ready' and because we were so fed up there would be no charge. This was some consolation. The outside tables were dirtyand had a lot of left over food on them, plates and cups etc and they had clearly not be cleaned let alone sanitised for some time. Its a shame but we will not be back.

A group of 6 people visited here for my best friends baby shower. We opted for the afternoon tea and it was absolutely delicious. The staff were extremely helpful and polite and my friend was even presented with the extra surprise of a desert plate, decorated in chocolate sauce saying 'Happy Baby Shower'-this was a very special and unexpected treat. This was my second visit here and both times did not disappoint. I look forward to my return. Many thanks

Wow, I am amazed to read any negative posts. I am a childminder and we have used this wonderful place many times. I often go with 3 children in tow and nothing is too much trouble for the staff to accommodate us. It is important for children to learn good social skills and here I feel they can while having fun. The staff bend over backwards to make sure we have high chairs etc and help me move them into the garden too. The staff always go above and beyond their duties. We love coming. Thank you. Fantastic team work in very difficult times.

Went up to Haytor to visit the Tinpickle and Rhum. What can I say..... lovely atmosphere, great decor, the staff were really good and attentive and the mussels were delicious. Couldnt fault it. If you've not tried you must go, it's great place to end up after working up an appetite.

Three of us enjoyed some lunchtime sandwiches, scones and drinks here this week. It wasn't busy, and the sandwiches were filled very generously, and came with salad and chips, lovely! Drinks were hot, and the place wasn't too busy. We appeared to have two different waiters/waitresses who seemed to get a bit mixed up as to which one had taken which order - if at all - but I'd rather be asked too many times than not at all. A nice lunch.

We wanted to take our son out before he returns to University next week. Although this restaurant is just 20 minutes from our home, we had never tried it. If I had read some of the recent reviews it might have put us off going- which would have been a massive shame. The brasserie is a lovely room, all COVID compliant- and so relaxing and immaculately clean. The bar has a good selection of drinks and is again, immaculate- you get the idea- even the toilets are spotless! We ordered a small portion of fish and chips, my son had pasta and I had the halloumi and mushroom burger. Well the small fish and chips were no small portion- more than enough for my wife- and beautifully cooked. The pasta was a little on the small side for our lad but again perfectly cooked. My burger was great with a big bit of halloumi- unlike the usual thin slice I have been used to elsewhere. I wish it was served with the same chips as my wife’s fish and chips- they were outstanding. We had just enough room for ice cream for dessert. The staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. Our waitress was lovely as was the chap who brought the coffees. The young ladies who greeted us were excellent. As for value for money, you couldn’t fault it. Two courses, drinks and coffees for three at less than £60, given the quality, location and service...amazing.Thanks for a lovely, leisurely lunch. We will definitely be back.

We live locally and had been here a few times pre-Covid so was looking forward to returning for a Sunday lunch with my partner for my birthday. I just wish I had read the recent reviews! On booking they asked if we wanted the conservatory or the Tinpickle. We should have picked the conservatory as we were shoved in a dark corner next to a shut blind which was a shame. Drinks were a little slow but not worth moaning about. We both chose the roast (beef and pork), the waiter wasn't sure what vegetables came but no problem. The food came out quickly. The beef was a tasty but tiny portion with quite a bit of fat, would have expected more for the price. The pork was nice. Nice vegetable selection in a separate bowl. The roast potatoes were as if they had been sat under a heat lamp for a long time- hard to cut and shriveled. Each plate contained a tiny bit of gravy. The meals were missing the Yorkshire and crackling advertised on the menu and I had to go up to the bar to ask as no one came to check up on the meal one delivered. When they turned up the Yorkshire was very dry which wasn't helped by the fact that there was hardly any gravy.Overall it was OK but for the best part of £30 for 2 roasts plus drinks extra I would have wanted better really. A shame as it has been lovely in the past and this was supposed to be a birthday treat.

We stopped by for dinner here after a day on Hay and Hound Tors. We booked in advance, as wanted to make sure we had a spot for food given Covid-19.The room was well spaced and everyone was adhering to social distancing, although given how many empty tables there were I wish we weren’t asked to sit directly next to the toilet. Which smelled pretty bad.The staff were friendly and the service was fine, but the food is the worst I have eaten in a restaurant in recent memory. The pictures on the website are nothing like what you get - the burger was disgusting, akin to a school dinner and of the consistency of rubber. It reminded me of cheap frozen burgers from thirty years ago. We couldn’t finish our meals. Both of us felt very unwell in the evening afterwards, although we weren’t sick.

We visited for afternoon tea after hearing good things about this place. Unfortunately I hadn't read the latest reviews. What you actually get for a Afternoon tea priced at £17.50 is 4 small finger sandwiches, 2 containing just cucumber 1 salmon and one ham, 2 scones with a small pot of jam and clotted cream, 3 pieces of very small victoria sponge and 2 micro pieces of chocolate brownie which were of extremely average quality. If the quality and value of the food wasn't bad enough the service faired no better. Not enough cups and no teaspoons delivered with our order and it took a further 10 minutes after the tea was served to receive the teaspoons. We had finished our tea by the time the food was delivered some 40 minutes later. There were dirty dishes and glasses piled up on tables behind us and there were plenty of staff and It wasn't particularly busy. I will not be going back.

We went here for lunch last Sunday, we had not booked. The staff were very nice, and we were given a table outside. We went to the bar to order. A male member of staff pulled down his mask, coughed liberally into his hands, pulled his mask back up and didn't wash his hands. He then went straight on to make someones coffee! On top of this, as a walk in they did not take ANY details for Track and Trace. AS far as we could see, NO Covid rules were adhered to. The food was very nice, but there is a huge wasp problem. Every table was suffering, we had at least 10 wasps attacking us and our food at one point. Not sure what can be done, but it did ruin the experience unfortunately.

We first went here at a busy time over the new year holidays about 18 months ago with friends, we were suitably happy and decided to recently take my parents for a coffee after showing them haytor. Sadly this time around it was disorganised chaos. They do not have a handle on COVID measures, on entering there is a bottle neck at the entrance with people trying to enter and leave with no hope of keeping 2m distance. There were only 4 tables occupied when we were there with three tables stacked high with dishes despite there being more staff than occupied tables. We waited 10 mins to order and then a further 35 mins waiting for drinks, we eventually gave up and left. Unfortunately I would not recommend, service needs to be improved, hygiene and COVID measures need to be approved.

We booked for lunch on a warm, sunny day. The outside tables were fairly full, so we opted for inside, which was quiet. It took a long time to be acknowledged and then shown to a table. Another long wait for menus, and likewise for our order to be taken. The staff member was unable to answer questions about the menu items, and I had to repeat 3 times the dish I had chosen, but when it arrived it was wrong. So hungry by this stage that I just accepted it. The food quality in general was good. It was very concerning that some of the Covid 19 regulations weren't being implemented. We (and others) weren't asked for our details for 'Track & Trace'. I noticed that when a family finished at their table, nothing at all was wiped or sanitised before another group was shown to that table. I would not eat here again or recommend to friends.

Had a pleasant early evening meal here. We sat in the more informal pub side of the restaurant which was fairly quiet at 6.30pm. As the carvery was not available we ordered roast dinners, turkey and beef, served at the table. Food was well presented and served with a separate selection of vegetables, all very good. Service was friendly and reasonably efficient as we weren't in a hurry. Thought prices were reasonable and would go there again. Through the bar area is a more formal conservatory style eating area overlooking the garden with some outside tables.

After a dubious start, when our reservation seemed to have been lost, we were seated outside at a large table for the three of us, with very comfy chairs. Excellent for distancing as no other tables close by. Sadly there was another problem with the order for my food being lost, but this was remedied and when it arrived the food was delicious (Hake). Thank you to Olivia for sorting out the mix up and getting me a drink whilst I waited.A lovely place to sit out in the sunshine. We enjoyed our afternoon very much .

Visited for a Sunday roast with the family, twelve of us in total. Great setting and nice atmosphere, very relaxed. The service was fantastic with lots of staff members. The carvery was okay. A good selection of meat, and a good serving however, only three Vegetables on offer and they had ran out of gravy in which we had to wait ten minutes for more to come out after we had already plated our dinner. Overall good, few floors.

The place wasn’t as clean as one would hope to find it, and the food on both visits was utterly awful: tasteless, overpriced, very clearly microwaved, haphazard, thoughtless etc etc. A bacon bap or sausage roll from Spar is significantly more tasty, filling and worthwhile.

Previously impressed with this take away & decided to return whilst in the area. Had sent them a message about opening hours and the food which was not responded to. We were disappointed by the homity pie which was tasteless & the Thai pie was ok. The star of the show was the steak and Stilton pie. So the morale of the story is some things are excellent others are mediocre.
