The place wasn’t as clean as one would hope to find it, and the food on both visits was utterly awful: tasteless, overpriced, very clearly microwaved, haphazard, thoughtless etc etc. A bacon bap or sausage roll from Spar is significantly more tasty, filling and worthwhile.

We received a very friendly welcome especially my friend's bull dog and she even got given a few treats. The service was excellent as was the food. It was all homemade and my friends had the small fish and chips which be assured was an ample portion. Good atmosphere, comfortable seating and the decor was fantastic. It's difficult to understand the negative reviews on here! We'd definitely return and so would the bulldog.

My mum was over from South Africa and had heard of this pub from someone over there. We were spending the weekend in Devon and decided to go out of our way to visit the pub only to find it closed at 17:00. The staff were cleaning inside and didn’t even acknowledge my family and I outside. If the pub wants to preserve an international reputation, it should perhaps be open a bit more often.

We were travelling between Christmas and New Year and lots of places were closed, but we came across The Hound of the Baskervilles and decided to give it a try. It was very busy, but the staff were great and after a very short wait they found us a table. It’s a quirky place with lots of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia, so plenty to look at while we waited for our meals. We didn’t have to wait for too long, and the food was very good and portions are on the large side (a good thing!) We both had crab which was excellent. Would definitely go back if we were in the area.

Once a busy pub in a Devon market town, the Hound of the baskervilles has aspirations to be a restaurant/eatery. Space has been filled with tables and one had to wait to be shown where to sit. First choice of lunch was not available,so we settled for soup. This took so long that we wondered if we had been forgotten. When it arrived it was thin, tasteless and gritty. Inedible. Won't be going back!

Went to this pub not once, but twice on our trip. Very impressed with the food and service. First trip for lunch , our server Sean ( from California!) was delightful. Really delicious curry. Second trip we arrived late on a Sunday, but Chris and Lette were gracious enough to let us order anyway and we shut the place down! (4pm) they work very hard to make sure everything is right. Decor is fun - movie posters and Sherlock Holmes memorabilia. Cozy space, good food.

Only sorry we couldn't try more dishes. It's not the smartest place but the food is great and we would definitely stop here again if we're passing. Only just off the A38 Devon Expressway so an easy way to break the journey south. Ashburton is a nice little town too, with lots of independent shops.

Wasn’t going to put this post on initially. But the more I think about it the more annoyed I become. So here it is. First visit was for lunch. Staff friendly, food good, beer excellent. Went in the evening this week - for the beer which is excellent. I was so shocked by the attitude of the staff member in bright trainers (manager?) who referred to a customer as ‘the fat ginger one’. We called in here for a drink last weekend. First of all, being greeted by a landlord in shorts, luminescent trainers, and greasy hair wasn't the best start. We were ushered into the back bar away from the other customers because we only wanted a drink. That meant we were sat on our own. We felt a bit uncomfortable there, as if we were in the management’s private space and not really welcome because we weren’t eating. The beer was good though, which was a pleasant surprise. We had one drink and left.

I was looking forward to a big breakfast. I’d finished my first cup of tea while waiting an age for food to arrive. I then tried for 20 minutes to catch the waiter and waitress’s eyes to order another tea. I even got up to plead for more drinks. They said they’d be right over. We finished breakfast and had to search for staff to pay the bill... still didn’t get that cup of tea. The food was ok. Better with a drink to wash it down.

The lentil curry was very nice and the chutney and naan bread (which you have to buy as an extra) was also nice. The vegetarian burger was very tasty, and the chips were lovely (my daughter had stilton on it which is also something you have to buy as an extra). My partner and I visited while on holiday in Dartmoor. We loved the quirky decor of the place, all things Sherlock Holmes and even the lamp shades have deerstalker hats! We were served by a nice young friendly chap and I had the haddock fishcakes and my partner had steak and kidney pie, both dishes we agreed were delicious and nicely presented. We fancied dessert so we waited for someone to come and take away our empty plates and take our order and waited... and waited. Nobody came near or by. We had to go then as our ticket for car park was running out. As we paid our bill I told the woman behind the counter what had happened. We didn't even get an apology. In fact she could not have been less interested. Spoilt what started out as a good meal.

Ashburton is a quiet village, and as i've been to the cookery school for many courses, am aware choice is limited. However, this could be a good hearty local restaurant. I went there on a friday evening, expecting some other diners, but i was the only one. Service was very haphazard and lacklustre. Food was OK, nothing exciting. I had a burger, and the bacon had a very thick and inedible rind that should have been removed prior to cooking. Don't think i'll return, as the silent whistle, which is a local pub, actually does better food.

Went for lunch in this former pub turned licensed theme cafe. The contrived atmosphere betrays the food, which was not good. The fish pie was described as being loaded with all kinds of seafood, topped with cheese mash. Sounded good but this was all mash and no seafood. Complained to the disinterested barman, who was - well - not interested. Proprietor was too busy telling advertising contact at next table all about the Dartmoor theme and murals to care. Out to relieve foreign tourists of their money by the sounds of it, but i wont be returning. So contrived but not for real moor trekkers.

The pub is fitted out with the Sherlock Holmes Hound of Baskervilles theme, which is a bit odd. The Sunday lunch menu is rather simplistic and very 1980s - a "roast with all the trimmings", offered as small or large - take the small it is plenty big enough. It was reasonable price but rather uninspiring - they seemed to have tried to cram every possible vegetable associated with a roast dinner onto every plate - min had 2 types of potato, carrot, swede, parsnip, peas, sprouts, leeks and yorkshire pud with roast lamb. Good value for quantity, less so for quality.

Had a great meal here last year and it’s the same crew with the same locals. The ploughman was lovely, huge chucks of Stilton and cheddar and warm crusty bread. The burger was a mistake (and that’s my fault for ordering it as I’ve been disappointed by burgers before). I suspect it had been deep fried as the outside was hard and black and then inside it was a little mushy and had that old fashioned taste of hamburgers from the past.

Our experience didn't concur with the majority of reviews unfortunately. Staff were friendly and helpful but the food was slow coming (about half an hour) and the quality didn't reflect the prices; for example the cod and asparagus fish cakes (special @ £12.50) were small and dry with no mixed veg available (only peas). The steak and ale pie (special @ £12) was a similar disappointment with watery mash (reconstituted?) and minimal short-crust pastry that was a bit hard rather than being nicely crumbly like home-made pies should be. Definitely not gastro I'm genuinely sorry to say because the staff were lovely.

Interesting pub themed on Sherlock Holmes. Comfortable with good choice of home cooked, reasonably priced food on the menu. Steak and Ale pies were lovely, served with skinny chips and a choice of six vegs. Very nice coffee to follow. Dog friendly. Some may be put off by the TV which was on throughout our visit, but when mentioned to the landlady, she kindly explained that the locals liked the TV on. Well that's fine, these are the people who keep the pub going, not casual visitors like us. There is a quiet spot behind the main bar if the tv was intrusive. One other minor point, many pubs seem to be serving skinny chips, just a thoughtful, but owners may wish to offer patrons a choice of skinny chips or traditional pub chips, happy to pay extra for chunky chips.

I noticed the last reviews and I love how people feel the need to lie and be nasty, funny how these people have never reviewed anywhere else ever but our Pub trip advisor is there to help people and business owners to improve were needed and see what kind of place they might like to go but trip advisor has turned into a place we’re people seem to want to be as horrible and nasty as they possibly can be. I don’t under stand why 1. People don’t speak to people why they are there you might be amazed at what might happen and why if one thing goes wrong ( we are only human ) that rather than saying this went wrong, anything and everything went wrong. I never take any notice of bad reviews on any trip advisor as working in hospitality 99.9 of the time it’s a lie. So just for you all to seen here are the hounds toilets which are never cleaned and no soap

We stopped here for lunch and it is a very old looking building but very unusual inside. Menus on the tables with a special board too. It had front and rear seating area and an outside court too. Prices were reasonable however we did order paninis but got baguettes. When I queried the waitress she insisted they were paninis. I also asked and paid for a pint of coke but received half a pint, and I asked for a hazy cider but got a normal one! The food was nice though and I got a nice big salad with it. The menu is very varied with light bites as well as bigger meals. Not sure if I would revisit given the amount of mistakes as the staff were not overly friendly.

My family and I visit Devon each year and have always been a little disappointed with the local establishments...This is no longer the case. Following our first visit we lunched and had a second evening meal there. The food was very tasty and portions really plentiful. The service was really friendly and our littles were referred to by name. The slightly quirky layout really added to the visit and we will most definately return upon our next Devon. We highly recommend this lovely, friendly pub!

I have been eating and drinking and recommending this pub to my clients since it opened over a year ago. It has the highest standards of cleanliness. The food is good and fantastic value. The owners and staff are genuine and lovely helpful people. Have always been highly satisfied!

The worst pub I have been in for years. The staff were unclean but polite. They engaged in loud conversation and the waiter/ barman and chef were both smoking outside. Hair on my plate. Beef average. Won't be back.

The 'Hound' is a mix of a tea room and a pub, with a Sherlock Holmes theme. It has a front room/bar with ample seating, plus a back room. The food and drink was good, as was the service. Recommended.

Well we came back, and had food and couple of drinks and then the most delicious ice cream I had the fish pie, and my wife had the vegan chilli, they were both delicious, good value for money.

Came here for a roast lunch with my dogs, the menu stated that they did a vegan roast.... ok great I'm vegan and hungry so obviously expecting a roast dinner with roast potatoes etc .... nope - we got frozen veg, and a 'pie' that wasn't really a pie... it was two different kinds of mash with some veg in and crusty stuff at the bottom.

My partner and I plus my parents came here for dinner and the food was delicious. You literally get what you pay for, and the service is really friendly. The decor is exactly how you would expect a pub called "The Hound of the Baskervilles" to look. I had the pulled pork burger which was so yummy. Prices are slightly higher than average for that area but as I said before, you get what you pay for. I'd definitely come back!

Looking for a quick bite to eat we came across the Hound of the Baskervilles. It’s themed, fun and with staff that make you feel really welcome. We had fish and chips which was more than ample but chased it down with a couple of scoops of the delicious ice cream that is on offer (we didn’t need it I might add!). All in all, reasonably priced food, offering good value for money served by friendly staff - what’s not to like. We also took our Labrador and they made such a fuss of him which made us feel at ease. Thanks again Hound of the Baskervilles we will be back.

A great find. We were looking for somewhere that welcomed dogs and could cater for a vegetarian who is also gluten free.

My husband and I ate here one evening earlier on in the week and it was just what we were looking for. Great selection for drinks and a fantastic menu. This place prides itself on local produce and home-cooking and you can tell! It's great value for money, I had the small fish and chips and rhubarb crumble for dessert and it was just delicious. Service was friendly and my husband got a choice of local ice-cream (numerous flavours) to go with his dessert. The decor and theme of the restaurant is just charming, there's so much Sherlock Holmes memorabilia to look at! It's very fun! I would recommend booking in advance as can get busy.

We liked this place so much during a recent holiday in the area that we visited three times for a very tasty breakfast and delicious coffee. Our dog was made very welcome, the staff and locals were friendly, chatty and welcoming. By coincidence we had recently been enjoying reruns of a Sherlock Holmes tv series with Jeremy Brett and Nigel Hawthorne so really enjoyed talking to the Manager who is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable on the films and books. I came home with one of their mugs which they sell! Looking forward to our next visit in October.

Visited here last night and really enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere! The pub is really random but it just works! Loads of cool and quirky ornaments and dogs around. We had nachos to share and then pies - the pies were huge! Homemade and tasty with loads of veg - we really wanted to finish but couldn’t. Lovely staff, friendly funny and will be returning next time we are in Ashburton.

We love this place so much that we booked a table for 3 consecutive nights during our recent stay at Cofton holiday cottages. We enjoyed every night, the food is great, the beer selection is good and the wine list is also good. Probably my favourite pub

Pass by the chain coffee shops and pop in here. Based in the market. Serves great local coffee and all the cakes and lunches are homemade. Family run business. Great friendly staff.

This is a regular for us, however I’m becoming increasingly fed up with the managers attitude. Once again we were over charged recently, asked the female manager to resolve….. no apology, just a feeling we were bothering her. This manager really does need to sort her customer service out please.

Usually a good bet to seek a café or restaurant away from the centre of town and waterfront. Modern interior, excellent coffee and sandwiches. A hearty soup of the day. Friendly crew and doggy friendly. Supported by locals. 🇬🇧🇳🇿
