Tickled Trout Newport in Newport

I'd been hanging out to visit this venue and had high hopes but left feeling not just disappointed but quite upset. Firstly, the waitress got our food order wrong and brought sea food instead of patatas bravas which could have been dangerous due to my seafood allergy. She promised to take it off the bill then didn't so had to chase that up. The frozen margarita was so bitter it was inedible. The dirty chicken wings were anemic looking and flavourless and the goats cheese croquettes were grey balls of meh... utterly bland. I thought I'd cheer myself up with some dessert so opted for churros after checking with the same waitress that the chocolate sauce was milk, not dark, as I can't tolerate dark chocolate. She assured me it was but it was dark when she brought it out and the churros were stale and lacking flavour. When I pointed this out, she became aggressive, went to the kitchen and thrust the bottle of chocolate in my face, insisting it was milk chocolate. I pointed out there was no signage on the bottle stating 'milk' but she continued to argue with me which completely ruined our evening, obviously putting a huge dampner on a birthday celebration. Oh, and the food took an hour to arrive. Never again...

It was our first evening meal with our baby and we were a little nervous but the staff here were incredible. The doorman helped us in with the pram and made sure we got in okay. Marcus was so amazing, didn’t rush us with our choices and made sure we had an everything we needed. It really took the stress away. The food was amazing the quesadillas were stunning. The restaurant had lush decor. Suitable for all types of groups, we saw friends, couples and families. Thanks for making it easy on us first time parents!

12 of us on a Sunday afternoon, for a birthday. We were so well looked after by Marcus and the team. The Chef was checking in with us before the orders giving advice and help. The food was superb. The service was so friendly and nothing was a task. We could not find a fault all day. Newports finest.

Service was EXCELLENT 👍 the waitress was attentive, funny and all round great human. Food was just ok. The taster of steak was delicious. Bao buns we didn’t like. As a huge bao bun fan I would say make them fresh or not at all. The menu is quite random but there was enough to please everyone. They allow you to roll a dice after the meal and if you roll a 6 you get 50% off the meal. While a fun gesture this seems awful business sense. People expect to pay for their meal. Maybe do 10% off instead?!

First time here and I thoroughly enjoyed it, just could not find fault food was fabulous, service was the best. Will diffenaly be going back. Oh and cocktails 🍸 😜 2 for 12 pound and tasted lush

First time here went with friends from work, made to feel very welcome when we arrived. Food was amazing served by very attentive staff. A must visit if you’re in the area .

Took advantage of the 3 tapas for £16 on a quiet Wednesday afternoon. This offer is available Sunday to Wednesday 12-5pm. Well worth the visit, had squid,prawns,bao buns,ribs,chorizo and dirty fries. The best tapas locally, outdoing Los Reyes in Caerleon and The Ruperra in Bassaleg. The chorizo was the real deal,as would have been served in an authentic Spanish tapas bar, none of your slices from a chorizo sausage. Of course we had to follow the lunch with churros and dark rich chocolate sauce. These were cooked perfectly crunchy on the outside with a soft doughnut centre, definatly not frozen from specials week at the supermarket. Drinks were reasonably priced, staff and customers were very pleasant and chatty. Special thanks to Keri,and Charlie the chef.

We visited for Mother's Day (8 of us) and once again received great service from the whole team. Hot, tasty food and the cocktail of the day, a baileys espresso martini was divine.

Amazing food, amazing service and amazing atmosphere. Lovely and clean and very comfortable. Nothing was to much trouble. A big thank you to Jimelle and Kerry for the outstanding food and service. Made my birthday treat even better. 100% go there again . One word AMAZING !!!!

Attended a friends bottomless brunch, everything was amazing, food drinks the staff, Kerry was amazing. Then all went down hill when th owners husband turned up- rude arrogant like he was doing me a favour- he forgets that i am the customer paying his salary. His wife Wendy is excellent he has issues. I would recommend to go when he is not around thinking he owns the world. Otherwise if he is there walk out.

Very poor this time which is a shock as we have been regulars, how has it gone down hill so far since my last visit? The last time was welcoming and a really great vibe for Newport, so I’ve supported and recommended. This time the blonde lady who served me was disinterested, did the basics (no actual greeting just “what can I get you”) I had a drink and ordered some food. It came quickly and was ok, but clearly not as well made/cooked as previously. She actually laughed at me when I asked for ketchup for my fries and said “we don’t have ketchup here!” Which was very odd. Mayonnaise is ok though apparently. Asked me if I wanted a plate for my Tapas, which obviously I did. No other interaction with either of the staff during my visit, disinterested at best despite the place being near empty, they just talked amongst themselves. This is a real pity as when the restaurant first opened it really did present itself as something different, welcoming and a much needed place for someone looking for something better than average in Newport to visit. Similar feedback from someone I recommended the Tickled Trout to last week. Sadly we won’t be able to keep supporting the restaurant, we thought we’d found a little gem, needs to get back to where is was a few weeks ago and quickly.

Walking past on the off chance was impressed by the look of it so popped in for a drink. We liked the look of the tapas menu so returned later. Really enjoyed the whole experience. Ceri was welcoming and gave us good advice. Food was delicious and good value. Jamal the chef was friendly also. We left with a loyalty card we fully intend to use regularly.

Went last night with a group of work friends. We were treated really well, very polite service and made to feel welcome. Some of the stuff we ordered was out of stock but it was explained they’d had a really busy weekend (this was a Monday) and stocks hadn’t yet come in. We were given other bits or duplicates of dishes we ordered to make up for it and were not charged for some. The food was a decent quality and not a bad price, the venue clean and pleasant and staff were lovely. Only thing we all commented on is that it would have been nice to have had some vegetable dishes just to balance it out a little. Other than that, would recommend giving it a try.

We went as a couple for a belated valentines meal but this place is good for any occasion. Good food, good sized portions and friendly staff.

We had booked a meal in a different restaurant for my wife's birthday, but when we got there they told us we didn't have a booking so we thought we would try this one, so glad we did the food and the service was amazing, Ceri and James made us feel at home, we had a great night, will definitely be back for another meal.

We visited last night with a group of friends, there were 8 of us. The staff were so welcoming, especially Ceri the manager who looked after us all night. Food was absolutely outstanding and very reasonable. We all had a great night and can’t wait to book again.

Had to try this new venue in Newport and was not disappointed. Kerry took great care of us and we loved the Tapas portions. Great food and a lovely ambience. Have got a loyalty card and will return!

Absolutely beautiful venue and lovely ambience when you walk in. Excellent service from Kerry and Ruby, who were both welcoming, fun and friendly. Ky provided fabulous service behind the bar. Food was so tasty, great size portions and definitely looking forward to another visit.

Our first visit was on a Saturday evening. Great atmosphere- lively and busy. Good choice on the menu and dishes priced £6-£7 each. Unfortunately, a few items we ordered were not available. We all enjoyed our food - good portion sizes (apart from garlic mushrooms which was tiny!) Great drinks menu and the cocktails were fab too. This place is a great addition to Newport and we’ll definitely come back

Sub standard experience from the heavy on the door to the abysmal frozen food at £8/9 a pop… just a rip off. Only go for a drink if you’re desperate, there are much better places to eat at Newport market, Tiny rebel or in friars walk etc.

Staff were great, looked after us all evening making sure we had everything we needed. Food was top notch. I enjoy tapas and have tried it in numerous restaurants in the area. This was by far the best quality and between the 7 of us, we sampled most of the menu, every dish was delicious.

Superb food and service with a nice wine list and a great veggie selection …I had halloumi in chilli jam, tortilla and the garlic ciabatta with a glass of Prosecco. 10/10 and I will be back

The food was very nice. There was five of us so we tried the complete menu from the front and back. Was a little disappointed that there was no bread served with the meal. My booking was for 20:00 hrs and didn’t realise the cut off point was 21:00 because although we tried the menu some wanted to order more but couldn’t. Over all the restaurant is very clean and have lovely staff. Will definitely return.

Lovely venue. Excellent choice of tapas dishes. Food was served quickly and absolutely delicious. Bit of a wait to pay the bill, but it was extremely busy. Lovely staff too. Will go back.

I met with a few old friends and tried this restaurant for the first time. It was a good choice! Great food, lovely staff and reasonably priced.

Food was excellent and there was a good choice of dishes, the staff were nice and accomadating and the ambience of the place overall is very nice. Already planning on going back.

Based on our first visit to this new spot we will definitely return. There were highs and lows in our experience. We arrived for our 8pm reservation not only was our table ready there was a nice touch of a hand written chalk sign at the reserved table with my name on. We were asked pretty quickly about drinks and we ordered a bottle of wine which we thought was reasonably marked up. Then we waited a while ( the place has about 40+ covers and was full) to place our order. We selected 6 plates to share between the two of us when the waitress eventually came to take our order 4 of the six items we had selected were no longer available. This was both annoying and surprising as there had been no communication that anything was off the menu. We reselected and placed our order then we waited and waited. One hour and five minutes after sitting down our food arrived. No big deal really as it was a date night but once again there was no communication that the wait would be a long one . As there is an open kitchen it was plain to see that there is only one chef and one aide in the small kitchen also we were told that the usual chef was sick and the replacement chef was getting familiar with things. The food when it came was pretty good without being spectacular the space is very nice especially for Newport. I wouldn’t order the meat balls again but the other dishes were way better than okay. We’ll be back with reset expectation and perhaps an earlier reservation. One last thought although it’s a tapas bar (style) the plates we ordered all arrived at once which we found odd and of course added to wait,

First visit to the Tickled Trout, lovely addition to the options for food and drinks in Newport. Cosy bar and a good tapas and wine menu. So we had teriyaki beef, meatballs, chicken thighs, calamari, and patatas bravas, all tasted great, really good tapas, priced around £5 - £7 and well worth it. For people in the city that enjoyed the Secret Garden for tapas and drinks, you’ll also find Michelle managing the venue; speaking from experience a perfect host; definitely worth a visit and enjoy!
