Le Raj Indian Restaurant in Newport

Went as a couple on valentines day, and when we arrived we were the only people in the restaurant (and had a booking) however the waitress directed us to sit on a sofa before we could go to our table, this was just an indicator of how the night was going to go... I'll start with the positives, the food was hot and tasty, and there was a good selection of vegetarian options, I definitely suggest the paneer chilli masala! My vegetable vindaloo was not spicy at all however, which was disappointing. Not the best indian food I have ever eaten, but not the worst... Unfortunately the negatives far outweighed the positives. The service was slow and odd, to say the least. The waitress took our drinks order then proceeded to go and wrap cutlery instead of fetching the drinks, eventually they arrived, followed by our popadoms. Our dirty plates from the popadoms were left with us whilst we ate our starters. A long wait later our main courses arrived. Once we had nearly finished the main courses, the smoke alarm went off. No apologies from any of the staff, and no indication that it was going to be turned off. We asked for the bill, and the only other table asked for their food to takeaway, as there was no indication the deafening noise was going to end. We were then informed there was no card machine, so I had to sit listening to the smoke alarm for ten minutes whilst my partner found a cash point. A little advance warning if this would go a long way! As we walked round to the taxi rank we could still hear the alarm sounding. Overall a weird experience, made worse by the constant alarms and chirping from the bar area, and the deafening smoke alarm at the end! A lack of music in a completely empty restaurant makes for a very uncomfortable experience. If this hadnt been chosen and booked as a valentines treat by my partner I doubt I would have visited, and I cant say that I will visit again, as the food quality did not outweigh the issues listed above.

I would advise anyone to avoid this place like the plague.Having asked for a special biriany I was served what was obviously a reheated meal.It was a soggy mess.When management asked if I enjoyed the meal they walked out of the door when I complained. I have been eating curry for over 50 years and honestly this is the worst ever.When I left no waiter was in sight. Please please stay away from.this awful restaurant.

First of all ask for spicy food not at all like snicker bar no taste at all spouse to be lamb korahi was something else and red color was in food like had a free truck curry was test funny like gone off No never again no recommend

First time of eating here. We are both vegetarian and main curry’s really nice. Slightly let down by rice and condiments the mint sauce was bright green and watered down the mango chutney also watered down. Rice a bit dry, garlic mushroom starter was dry but ok onion bargies were nice. Cost of meal was really good. It’s a shame that they are not upping their game other restaurants like Hatti and Shoboraj are certainly much better

Not only did the owner bring my son home in a taxi last week when drunk when no one else would he remembered he owed us £5 food tonight was great as always thank you very much

Went to this place with the hubby on the way back from shopping in town centre. Food was very nice but the decor seemed a little shabby. The staff were nice enough, location not ideal as there is no place to park unless you park in the car park which is quite distant

Looking for a Monday night feast we found this delightful little Indian restaurant. My partner and I were the only two people in. After trying the food I bet they get ridiculously busy later in the week. I had a delicious vegetable jalfrezzi, mushroom rice Bombay potatoes and pashwari naan. Everyone was hot and flavoursome. The gentleman working there was very attentive and a very likeable chap. I look forward to my next visit there.

Had our evening meal here while staying in Newport for work. We had no idea which one of the indian restaurants was the best, but we now believe we found out. The staff were very good, the food very very good. We all agreed we made a GREAT CHOICE.

Called in with friends, never been in the La Raj before, but will definitely be calling back again, the staff were very friendly and helpful explaining the menu, our meals were very nice, thankyou again for a warm welcome and a lovely meal.

Been here a few times for a take away and sat inside with friends when it opened the very first time. Meals were very nice with a lot flavour. Had a chicken biryani even though I asked for a chicken tikka biryani so weren’t too pleased. Anyhow the biryani itself was delicious with lots of flavour but the chicken in it wasn’t nice. (That’s my opinion though). Place is very clean and staff seem polite.

These most delightful and tasty currys I have ever tasted, I tried different one each time and they are all different, unlike some placed, you wont be disappointed if you like Curry.
