Thyme Bar & Grill in Cherwell

I came here a year ago and was blown away by the presentation, creativity and taste of the cocktails. Since then it’s become progressively worse, with the menu becoming ineligible the second time with a rude server, and third time (last night) the menu becoming actually legible but with more standard cocktails. The cocktails were still good but not worth the elevated price. Alex the bartender is great however. Mixed feelings given this place seems to have moved away from the direction of focusing less on the presentation of drinks, which is what I felt made this place really memorable and appealing in the first place.

I was obsessed with Thyme Bar the first time I came here. There were drinks that were suspended from the ceiling, a variety of cool glasses that showed a level of creativity and thought for each drink that I hadn't seen anywhere else for cocktails in the city. Some drinks were okay, while others were amazing. But then I came back, and the entire menu had changed. The bartender admitted they were understaffed, and we felt it. The drinks were now plain and like any other cocktail bar. Is it still a decent place to grab drinks in the area? Definitely. Especially given the area is known for more kitschy bars with zero elbow room, Thyme Bar's quiet dark interior one level below ground is a decent choice. But I wish they'd bring back some of the uniqueness that made this place so great a year ago!

Lovely bar with great unique cocktails and a superior menu. A great date night place. Ambience service food and drinks are just at an elevated level. Our server Ariel was a delight and her recommendations were delicious!

We had an absolutely incredible time at Thyme for my girlfriend’s 30th birthday!!! The food, drinks, and service were all out of this world! We had a mushroom dish that was topped with 3d printed truffle cotton candy (need i say more?!) oysters inspired by the last bite of southern brunch by the genius Chef Leaha and decadently creative cocktails made by Alex. One of which was crafted to remind you of your first kiss and evoking a feeling. The GM Erin is a rockstar who is incredibly in tune with her team and the space is perfect for an intimate experience . Could not recommend coming here to Thyme more!!!

I went here for my birthday eve back in december and had an incredible time. When we got in, they welcomed me with a champagne toast to start the evening. Alex made us incredible cocktails, that honestly are better described as art. Between the taste and description of the drinks to the way he made them, it was absolutely a performance! We loved every drink he made. We absolutely loved the blinis, ribs, and oysters. The 3D printed soy sauce cotton candy was incredible and brought such an incredible experience. And the oysters were divine, the chef told us this was designed to be a reminiscent of a last bite of eggs and biscuits. And they did not disappoint! In general, we had an incredible experience and can’t wait to come back the next time we’re in the city!

Cody is the sweetest most helpful guy! Alex the head bartender is hands down Manhattan’s drink wizard. The drinks here are innovative and insane, just make sure to find the entrance since its disguised as a closed coffee shop.

I was a huge fan of Thyme, they had wonderful drinks presented in a creative way. Drinks were clearly described on the menu with pictures/images. It was a 5 star place. Lately, they changed "the concept". The new cocktail menu is a mess, the cocktails aren't as creative anymore. The martini with sherry was fine, but so many other bars in the neighborhood serve more creative ones... This is not a 2 star place. It just was a 5 star place that turned mediocre for some reason... I hope to visit again if Thyme Bar decides to go back to the previous winning concept, as it was my neighborhood favorite...

Alexander, the bartender is the man. He knows his drinks and knows how to have a good time. Highly recommend!

Favorite cocktail lounge in NYC! Alexander is a master of his craft! He prepared off the menu drinks and combined ingredients that had a magical effect on us! DELICIOUS and unforgettable experience!

Really fun cocktail bar with a nice speakeasy vibe below a pastry shop. The bartenders were incredibly skilled, the music was perfect, and the champagne ice cream was special. Great spot to grab a drink before or after dinner.

Went for my partner && I's anniversary, we had an AMAZING time! I cannot speak for the food, but I feel like our experience varied greatly from some of the negative reviews on here. The drinks were COMPLEX, had depth, and tasted vastly different from a regular bar. Alexander was a DREAM to watch behind the bar, very focused, meticulous, and dedicated to his craft of making delicious cocktails. Another couple we met there, were also blown away (we ordered a couple different drinks, chatted about the ingredients, and they made non-menu drinks, on the spot I might add, for us too TYSM!). It's not easy to take patrons palate requests on the fly && make something impeccable, they also could swap ingredients or modify if asked for CERTAIN drinks, so unsure why some ratings complained about that...realistically they spend time prepping for menu items so it's not always doable but they likely try their best. Overall I'd come back for sure definitely for the drinks. Cody, was GREAT at suggesting drinks && super attentive, chill to chat with && Alex, like mentioned previously, didn't disappoint either. Thank you for the drinks!!

This place USED to be a must-see. The whole change of concept is such a waste. The three drinks we ordered tasted so boring. Not worth the price at all. Oddly, all three TASTED boring compared to previous drinks I've had there that made me melt in my seat. The worse quality compared to previous visits was highlighted by our poor waiters tired lines about now being "taste-forward" instead of "presentation-forward" or whatever he said. This was a mistake to change what you were doing. I tell so many people about Thyme. We left after one drink. I guess the most fun part of my final Thyme experience was texting like five friends a disappointing photo of our three milquetoast tasting drinks and letting them know not to come back because it isn't a good place any more. Everyone's response was "oh no!"

Strange menu, the drinks and food are very unorthodox, imagine taping a half eaten banana on the wall and calling it art. That’s what’s up. That’s said, a sure sign of inexperienced staff is the inability to alter drinks. They couldn’t switch a single ingredient, the spirit of one drink on the menu. That wouldn’t be an issue if they could tell you that upfront but instead they said they could but that it would taste like a classic drink despite the signature drink containing many other ingredients, upon questioning it appears they wouldn’t make what I asked but make me the classic drink. So I suppose the answer was no, they couldn’t swap the ingredient. Why they couldn’t just say that is beyond me. A place that fashions itself a high end cocktail bar shouldn’t serve premade drinks let alone not know how to change anything or admit it won’t up front.

Disappointing. I discovered this bar on social media a long time ago and wanted to try it since then. The staff were friendly, but we ordered four drinks, and all of the cocktails were mediocre. We tried to order based on photos of interesting-looking cocktails we found in Google reviews, but the bartender told us they don’t serve those fancy cocktails anymore. It’s not worth the trip if you’re visiting from another town; it’s just a neighborhood cocktail bar with higher prices.

What a place! First of all - if you want the CLOUD cocktail - you will be disappointed as they don’t sell them any more. I only say this as we heard 4 people ask for it and were all disappointed but don’t let that put you off there’s so many amazing looking and tasting drinks here - mine was made in front of me using a red hot poker iron! Like everyone else we whitenessed we walked straight past the entrance. When your maps tell you you have arrived and you see the screen saying “use other door” simply look on the floor and follow the carpet! Sounds simple but everyone walked past the door. I’ll be honest the menu is very confusing but the bar staff know this and are more than happy to help you find the drink you will like and if it’s not on the menu they will make you a personalised drink. I recommend sitting at the bar - we were treated so well and the incredible barmen was so fascinating to watch he lived and breathed cocktails and was so happy to educate us and show us the homemade perfumes he makes to infuse the spirits it was an a amazing experience. My wife chose a cocktail that wasn’t to her taste and they were more than happy to make her a new one the drinks are great and the theatrics are amazing!

Went for the NYE tasting event (prix fixe menu) and to ring in the new year. Normally these events tend to favor the restaurant. However, this was an embarrassing and insulting amount of minimal food received for what we paid- even by NYC standards. The marquee course was three small slivers, and I mean slivers, of prime rib eye for TWO people. Unacceptable. The next day we went to a proper steakhouse and ate over 40 ounces of ribeye for less than what we paid for this prix fixe event. Please stay aways, this place is the ultimate scam.

Original cocktails from a year or two ago were far more interesting than this current state, but still tasty. I’m sad to see the content has shifted so much, but the bar is still great.

This place is the biggest scam I’ve ever seen in New York. They will pretend to have something called a ‘tasting menu’ with pretentious size portions but still charge you as if it’s a wholesome tasting set. They started us off with warm caviar. Absolutely nasty and primarily a health hazard. Lacked flavor and felt slapped on. We proceeded to receiving Toro And Uni which was just fine. The uni was again- warm. Which is completely unacceptable. Only point to this fiasco of a serving was for the Hing Crab. Coming to the rib eye cap- it felt very silly to receive 3 slivers for two people. The best joke for last- they call it a champagne of beers granita and olive oil with oranges for dessert?No. This felt like ice shavings from the back of the freezer along with unpeeled warm orange slices swamping around in a bowl. GROSS.

A hidden gem in NYC. Perfect intimate setting for a date. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.

I loveeee this place I’ve been going every time I visit NY since 2022. They’ve changed the menu since my first visit but I’ve had a lot of awesome bespoke (off-menu) cocktails based on my favorite liquor (mezcal!!), flavor profiles, mood, etc. If you are lucky enough to sit next to Alex, the head bartender, you will be in for a show as he crafts his art in front of you - it’s seriously such an experience - my friend and I were only going to stay for one drink and ended up staying until last call and inviting others to come join us. We had so much fun and every drink was a hit. Coming from LA, I don’t always get to have a nice craft cocktail (esp. now that everyone is batching everything) and always look forward to visiting when I’m here! This is by far the most creative and experience-centric bar I’ve ever been to anywhere.

The people here make the experience. Our bartender Vibe was incredible, he was informative, poised, and made us feel comfortable. You literally can’t go wrong with any order, and will learn all that you need to know about it in the process. Will be back soon!

I had high expectations for Thyme but my experience fell flat. Thyme Bar is located below the Chanson coffee shop. There is no elevator and the staircase is required to enter. The host tonight was doing the work of 3 people - he was the host, clearing plates and also pouring water. Because of this, we waited a bit to get seated. The host has to go up and down the stairs to seat everyone, in addition to the other activities he was doing. We had a reservation which I recommend because the space is pretty tiny. There is one bathroom available. We sat at the bar, and were served promptly. The most disappointing aspects of this experience were the menu choices. The food options are very limiting, especially if you're a vegetarian. There was mostly seafood based food. We shared house tots and the sunchoke- the only two veggie options available. They were pretty good. The sunchoke had cherry on it which was overpowering. 3 seasonal desserts - we had the chocolate mousse with cherries. The mousse part was ok but overpowered by the tart cherries again. The menu currently online does not match what is being offered in person. I had a drink similar to a White Russian. It was ok but didn't stand out. Overall, I thought the food and drink options were lackluster here. I didn't feel excited by the menu. The graphic design of the menu is busy and kind of distracting to look at. The food section is located in the middle of the menu and that was a bit confusing. Service was good though and the bartenders were happy to offer recommendations. I would consider coming back if the menu was better, but since they don't update the website, it would be hard to know.

Thyme Bar is an absolute gem in NYC! From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is cozy and stylish, perfect for a night out. The cocktails are amazing—so creative and delicious, and they look incredible, too. The staff is super friendly and passionate about their craft. It’s a great place for a date night or just hanging out with friends. Definitely a must-visit bar!

We really enjoyed the entire experience. Alex and Martin are wonderful people and great bartenders. Alex is mesmerizing to watch. Coming from Florida, we frequent NYC and have yet to find our “place”. But, tonight we’ve made a life long connection here. We will be back many, many more times. Thank you!

A speakeasy hiding on the basement, it’s pretty dark and cozy. The seating is a bit strange if you have a larger group. The service was a bit odd, maybe our waiter was too much in the character. There are some interesting options for drinks. We are a party of three all got different drinks, so I tried three, personally I didn’t like any of them. The drinks looks very fun, with fun decor and dry ice. But they don’t actually taste good and the portion is a bit small for the price tag.

One of the best nights I have ever had in NYC. Bartenders Martin, Alex and Vibe are the most creative bartenders. We asked for customized drinks by giving them stories, flavors and the choice of alcohols. Turned out, the drinks were made to perfection. From the ingredients, to the flavor and to the presentation, everything amazed me. Definitely worth the experience. We were bar hopping and decided to end our night in the Thyme bar. The best decision! It’s also my first time giving out such big amount of tips. See you guys in 2 weeks!!

Honestly, it was much better with the old tasting menu when you were able to pick 2 cocktails, a small dish and a dessert. I can see what the place was going for with the new tasting menu, but 1) timing was all over the place (we had to wait for too long multiple times, even when waitress was saying she’ll be back with the next round in 2 minutes) 2) food is luxurious, but since you can’t pick anymore - it will be a matter of taste, and some combinations are unusual but not pleasant for everyone 3) 2 out of 3 cocktails were unique which is good but the 007 was not as inspiring 4) starter with non-alcoholic beverages is lackluster in comparison to previous Prosecco clams We also ordered a drink each (4 people) after the tasting menu, and they were just not as unique and interesting as before. This place was great, I’ve been here 3 times before, but unfortunately if it continues in this direction I don’t think I’ll be drawn to come back.

Pretentious bar. Over priced cocktails. When asked what cocktail the bartender would recommend, he rudely said “I don’t know you, I don’t know what you like, read the menu”. He clearly didn’t even know the menu himself because he was reading an ingredient list when making our cocktails. There are way better bars in the city.

Elevated cuisine, and unique cocktails 🍸

Management should really consider hiring a new hostess. I had a very bad experience here. Came with a friend and we sat in the larger sofa area because we were expecting one more person. When our other friend came, the hostess with long braids walked up to me & raised her voice in front of other guests at the bar saying “Do you know that it’s illegal for you to overstep my boundary and bring in any guests without my approval first?! Who do you think you are” I said “this is the other guest we’ve been expecting” and she said that the place was too crowded and it was already last call. I looked around and said “there are many open tables available, nobody else has even walked in since we got here, and our server told us already that last call wasn’t for another 40 more minutes” She continued to have an attitude with me saying that extra guests are not welcome unless she approves first, and that I am not welcome back to Thyme again, all while in front of other customers. That is no way to speak to a patron. Also, for the remainder of our time there, no other guests walked in taking up any of the seats or tables, and the bar sure enough kept taking drink orders for another 40 minutes. Management, please consider either training your hostess, or hiring someone who has experience in hospitality and how to speak to customers.

These people play games. The staff is not knowledgeable. They served me prosecco when I ordered a cava. When we confronted the waiter he said cava and Prosecco are the same thing, they make cave in Italy as well. This is clearly not true. You do not need to be a sommelier to know this information. So they were going to charge me $18 for a cava but poured me a $6 prosecco. Will not return.

I ordered Raventos cava and the guy pours me some cheap Prosecco. I asked him why and he casually tells me that they’re out of Raventos and told me it’s cava. I pointed out that the bottle clearly says Prosecco and he proceeds to tell me “it says Prosecco but it’s really cava.” I told him, “proseccco is Italian, cava is Spanish. It is not the same.” Guy lies to my face and won’t back down. He then tells me, “oh yeah, cava is Spanish but they make them in Italy too!” And then the just walks away. My husband is a certified level 2 sommelier and we were just dumbfounded. The waiter decides to randomly serve me something other than what I ordered, lies about it and when I confronted him, he doubles down?? This is fraudulent and dishonest. Naturally, I refused to drink the Prosecco and sent it back. We told him that cava can only made in Spain just like champagne can only be from the champagne region in France. He then just laughs it off and say his boss lied to him. Zero accountability, no apology. This really makes me wonder how often does this establishment serve customers the wrong drink and get away with it?? The desserts sucks and he also opened a can or beer at our table just to immediately realize it’s the wrong one and then switch it back. I don’t know what is going on at this place, but I will never return.

Don’t waste your time…. They didn’t have half of the drinks in stock. The grill was broken so you also couldn’t order some of the menu. We wanted to order some glasses of wine at the end, but also out of stock. Sounds like they are in trouble . (Also side note, we ordered the white lady which comes in a bust form glass. We received one, and the table directly next to us ordered the same and it was twice the size. Such a strange experience.)

Horrible service, waited 40min and didn’t get a drink! bartender never gave us water, but gave water to others, we moved seats and got snappy because we DIDNT TELL HIME WE MOVED!! we just moved one seat away from the chair we were sitting, took our orders and never gave us our drinks, too busy flirting with the girls. So we left… maybe if we were white he would’ve made our drinks!!

Beyond how cool this place is and how fascinating the drinks are the crew working this place are amazing. I got to chat with Cody a little bit while waiting for the rest of my party and he was so nice and funny! I can’t remember my waiters name but he was also amazing and so friendly and even joined in on some interesting conversations with us. I will definitely be back. They were super accommodating for one of our guests who does not drink which was really nice. Definitely visit if you’re ever in the area.

This is the place I take my out of town friends when they visit. Alexander is my fav bartender in NYC. Drinks are pricey and there’s a wait to get them, but well worth it. Make sure to ask for the custom made shots

Great intimate bar! The quality of the cocktails are superb. I had the BEST espresso martini ever! Alexander and Vibe are truly masters of their craft. Everyone working here was friendly and attentive. I’ll definitely return to try more drinks on the menu.

AMAZING!!!! Vive and Alexander are the best bartenders!! The drinks are all amazing with great presentation, perfectly balanced cocktails done with ARTISTRY, and just overall a 100. One of the best bars I’ve been to in my life. Would totally come back!!

Pork belly on the BLT made it terrific! I wish it was different bread, but otherwise best ever. Mischa was a great bartender and introduced the "cranberry-soda" member of our party to some great nonalcoholic options that they have. We definitely enjoyed.

This place feels like a little escape from NYCs reality. The mixologist and owner has created a full on immersive experience. From the taste, the look/ presentation & the smell - ALL your senses will be tingling and craving for more. 10000% recommend coming here. Jameson is theee man. I went here for a work celebration/ dinner and the drinks were phenomenal and his recommendations were perfect & spot on. We did the prefix menu which gives you a lot of bang for your buck. I LOVED the drinks & dessert and my favorite bite was the truffle fries. The team does an amazing job at dietary restrictions too. My only recommendation to the team is to serve enough chip/olive/bite with the drinks that come with them. It's hard to have 1 chip last an entire drink - nobody's got that kind of self control.

Intimate speakeasy hidden underneath a coffee shop. We almost missed it looking at the storefronts but found our way by following their carpet. The drinks were quite elaborate in terms of presentation. I had the Agrabah and thought it was good.

This is simply the best cocktail experience I have had in New York City. The service is impeccable and the artists (not bartenders) are insanely talented at what they do. I'm so glad I picked this place for our anniversary.

After dinner, we went to Thyme Bar for cocktails. Reservations are recommended but we were lucky to walk in and get a table for 4. All the drinks we ordered were very creative and delicious. The bar itself has a nice sexy speakeasy vibe. Hands down we agreed that Agrabah was the BEST.

Just a place for taking pictures which that I wasn’t looking for from a fancy place like this. The food was bad, don’t get the crispy chicken(I can't remember the full name of the dish but it was swimming in the oil and tasteless) and the cocktails were not as great as their presentation.

What can I say, their atmosphere is great,,, but the true hero is their cocktails. They got so much choices but made sure that each drinks are special and fantastic!

Overall the vibe and service was amazing. The cocktails were really good and had great presentation. The food was presented well but I do think it could have been more flavorful. I tried the tasting menu which was 2 cocktails, an entree, and a dessert. I had the shrimp. The portion was small and could’ve used more spice but the pork belly blt was so good!

The big girl host for tonight was super rude. Retraining needed.

Just incredible! A delightful little speakeasy with the kind of decor that could go either toward the conservative or the decadent, the food and drinks land firmly in the decadent without being that much more expensive than cocktails anywhere else in the area.

Cocktails are always great!! I’ve been here twice and they had a different menu every time. I’d highly recommend you visit thyme for a cute little date or to get good/innovative cocktails in general.

I was lucky enough to walk in without reservations on Tuesday night. Last time I tried my luck on a Thursday evening and was told that the wait is over 2 hrs. Service is friendly and warm, which is rare in a NYC speakeasy to be honest. The manager was knowledgeable and introduced their famous cocktail to me. I ordered 🌟Agrabah: really not to my taste. Heavy hint of mint and I hardly taste pistachio. 🌟🌟🌟Corpse reviver: in my opinion, this is a citrusy gin with a hint of chamomile and the absinthe made it stronger. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Noir: my favorite. If you don't like scotch, please skip this one. Their drink presentation is nice and beautiful. Bartenders look very experienced! I'll revisit if they invent new cocktails!

Trust me you would not get drunk here.

Amazing & Def worth a try! Very original cocktails (e.g, with Oud)

Visiting from Miami, and decided to check out Thyme Bar. It was a very cool experience. You come in to lobby where there's someone who will take you down to the ground floor where there is a bar . The lighting was pretty and dim out the reflections of the lighting of the bar, and space was beautiful. Drinks were pretty, and the presentation of it was cool.

A speakeasy, reservation recommended, really cool date place, really fun cocktails that are works of art. Bunch of fun shaped glasses, some hanging from the ceiling, some with smoke just gorgeous and delicious. Also the foods are fantastic!

Their young hostess is so so so unprofessional and rude. She can’t be the face of a place like this!

All drinks have fun presentation and experienced bar tenders. I asked them to make a custom drink with ube syrup and it was the best cocktail I had. We call it Uber Moto

Such a Awsome place for drinks or date. The drinks are delicious and not even joking. Codie was awesome and recommended the greatest drinks without even looking at the menu.

Drinks were very expensive, even for NYC ($25+). The bar itself is underneath a bakery, and is pretty cool - the kind that’s instagrammable with drinks that hang from ceilings and get served in plant pots. Mixologists were on point, I just think the cost is pretty high - especially with lots of amazing cocktail bars around the city charging slightly less.

The staff here are INCREDIBLY kind and generous. You truly feel like a guest. Great ambiance. Creative drinks.

Thyme Bar is a classy speakeasy located at 20 W 23rd St, Cellar, New York, NY 10010, they got the most unique innovative cocktails with creative & fancy presentation, developed and directed by Jeremy Le Blanche. I have been to Thyme bar many times, their fancy cocktails always surprises me, never disappointed. I went with group of photographers and influencers, they have updated their cocktails once a while, the amazing taste and presentation made me in love with this spot. We always got the friendly welcoming experience with the bartenders and staff. Hope to see you there. Note: Suggest make reservations before going there, space and seating are limited.

For $100 including tip, you too can have 3-4 mediocre tasting cocktails. I struggle rating these types of places because I don’t know if I should be reading them on my lived experience or if maybe I’m supposed to know going in that it’s all just for looks and I shouldn’t have expected the cocktails to be tasty.

Was here on Sat 3/23 around 8PM and, generally, everything was great. Host was friendly and bartender/mixologist was personable and entertaining. But the female server who seemed incredibly over it and wholly reluctant to help or provide recommendations, and who ended up ignoring us for the remainder of the evening (thankfully), really put us off and made what would've been an overall fun experience into a pretty sour one. The male server who ended up coming around to us seemed much friendlier, but at that point, we were ready to leave after our first and only drink. Disappointing because we were looking forward to trying this place for a while and we left so disheartened. :(

We all need more Thyme 🌿 All thyme is now, all space is here. One drink at this bar brings a much needed change in perspective.

The drinks are very pricey. Drinks are good but more of a show a speak easy mood.

What a wild find this was. Honestly such a great idea by the owners to turn their basement into a speakeasy during the evening because the space is quiet beautiful

hostess looked miserable, very tired, didnt want to talk. not great for business, 1/27/23, 0/10. one of the waiters pushed my seat while i was sitting to move my chair. ABSOLUTELY WILD.

What an amazing experience! Our bartender Chris, he is an artist in his own rights! The drinks where fantastic, the delivery inspiring and the atmosphere quaint.

We came here around 10pm on a Tuesday and were able to get seated without having to wait. The place was at about 60% capacity when we got there, but it filled up to 100% by the time we finished our drinks around 11:30pm. When I originally looked up this place it said there was a cocktail tasting menu, but they had a normal a-la-carte menu that we ordered from. The cocktails were good and I loved the presentation!

Once you actually see bartenders doing the amazing work you will know why the cocktails are so expensive here

Cocktails are strong 4/5. You can certainly find better tasting cocktails in the city. Presentation 4.5/5. I like the atmosphere here, although noisy. Bartender was appropriately aloof. Not very personal. Playing it a little too cool to be relatable, but we still had a really nice time.
