I visited on a Sunday lunchtime when the pub was busy. A vintage bus dropped me off nearby and two locals recommended the pub for real cider. The bar staff were very friendly and helpful, and even offered to rustle up a gluten free Sunday roast, though sadly I did not have time for that. I did have time to chat to some of the locals while I enjoyed the cider. Perhaps another day I can stay for longer.

I had heard nothing but good things about the roast dinner here & im so glad I finally tried it! There were 10 of us & everyone enjoyed their meal which says a lot. There is a good selection of meat & they even have chicken which a lot of places don’t, this was a real a bonus for me. The portions are plentiful & the meat & veg are sooo tasty, there is nothing I would change. The staff are all very friendly & accommodating, if anything extra is needed they will make sure this is taken care of, highly recommend

Stopped overnight at the Thorverton arms on route to Cornwall. We had the best night. Great meal, all the staff were both welcoming and efficient. Happened to be their Second anniversary and they had a pub Olympics to celebrate. The owners went above and beyond tonight and everybody in the pub really enjoyed the night. We will 100% be returning. We especially liked to 100m relay to the neighbouring pub where there was a Baileys shot waiting (or water for the drivers / children) before a dash back. Rooms are lovely and super clean. Brilliant start to our holiday - thank you !!

Returned today for their renowned Sunday Roast. We were not disappointed! Beef for me and turkey for my wife. Great selection of vegetables, gravy really full of flavour and potatoes cooked just right. Yorkshire pudding is nice and crispy too. It's really good value and their selection of THREE real ales on tap goes down well too. Their service is fast and efficient, you won't be hanging around waiting for long either. Can't recommend this place enough! Book now!

we have a regular village lunch every 2 months and this time we went to the Thorverton Arms. There were 33 of us and we had a really good meal of several varieties. The present owners have only been there for 2 years but have transformed the place. We are going to sample their Sunday lunch which is supposed to be just as good as a home cooked one. Good luck to them.

A little hidden gem. We met up with friends for lunch and the owners Mandy and Steve welcomed us with open arms, also made our springers very welcome. The garden is fit for drinks or dinning which is a great addition to lot of space inside. Small menu on offer, freshly home cooked food, Asia noodles, lasagna, fish and chips, pie and chips etc. Would recommend and will definitely be back .

I’ve just come back from staying a couple of days at The Thorverton Arms having taken myself off to go fishing for salmon on the nearby River Exe. Whilst I returned with my fishing basket empty, I much enjoyed staying at this pub. It evidently is at the centre of village life: very buzzy with hearty food and a hearty welcome, just how a country pub should be. Much credit has to go to the landlord and landlady, Steve and Mandy who run a very good ship…thank you!

Steve and Mandy are amazing hosts. We met with group for a Christmas party, the food was plentiful, tasty and well presented. The cheese with honey as recommended by Steve was a hit for a few. All of the team had time to chat and make sure everyone was happy all evening. Steve even remembered my wife’s strange breakfast request, the gravy on the side was a touch. Will be back soon. Very disappointed this time round. We stayed last year and the customer service was good, as was the atmosphere. This year, under new management, we found zero customer service. My parents were feeling unwell 2 days into our 3 night stay so we had to leave a night early. On departure I was not asked if everything was ok. Just took the keys and said bye, not even safe journey or hope to see you again soon or, how was your stay/your room etc. Also, the towels, tea, coffee, milk was not replenished in the rooms, nor were the beds made during our 2 out of 3-night stay. The rooms were so noisy, as we were near a door that smokers were going in and out of, so it was constant banging of that door day and night. At the very least they need to put some rubber stoppers on that door as it's in constant use until late in the night and makes a terrible banging noise for the rooms. We will not return to this B&B under its current management with total lack of customer service in our experience.

We spent one night in the Thorverton Arms enroute to Cornwall, and to visit Killerton House and gardens which are about 15 minutes away by car.Thorverton is an attractive small village and well worth a short visit. Unfortunately the Thorverton Arms did not meet our expectations. The whole hotel is very tired both inside and out, with lots of very old furniture and fittings. Our bedroom (room 2) was small, with beds that left a lot to be desired with very soft mattresses that left us with back aches etc, in the morning; sleep quality was poor, The bathroom was OK, needed refurbishment but worked reasonably well, though the shower cubicle was small and leaked onto the floor. On the plus side the room was clean, and the linen and towels spotless. The TV was very small and did not work well. The hotel wifi was fine for emails etc.Our dinner in the restaurant was good, better than you would find in many similar pubs with rooms, though the restaurant decor is frankly very dated and dirty.Breakfast was a little unusual in that there was no printed menu and the choice was limited to variations on a full English breakfast. No cereal, fruit or fruit juice were offered. Quality and quantity were OK, though not exceptional, and food not very hot when served. My wife had a boiled egg, but the hotel had no egg cups! Our room including breakfast cost a little under £100, rather poor value overall I thought. Dinner was though pretty good value, and beer and wine good and sensibly priced,The staff were all friendly and helpful. The hotel is in new ownership, and I am sure the new owners have improvement plans.Presently however I am unable to recommend this hotel to others.

The kitchen was being refurbished but nothing deterred our brilliant breakfasts which entirely met our choices from day to day. Our room and ensuite were spotless. Brian and Debbie had only been in the pub for 3 weeks and the plans they have sound great The inn itself is over 200 years old and the atmosphere reflects the hospitality and history of the inn. We are so looking forward to returning and feeling a part of village life again.

Our own admin error meant we were in Devon a day early for our cottage holiday, but it was only late in the afternoon that we realised this and sought to find somewhere for three adults and one dog for one night. From the moment the phone was answered to the moment we left, it seemed nothing was too much trouble and this was despite their own challenges. A new owner took over earlier that week and several things had already gone wrong. The kitchen was closed for main meals but Jay sorted out a table for us at the nearby Exeter Arms. The twin and double rooms were very clean with nice bedding and great towels (proper sized sheets, not a tiny excuse of a towel!) The decor and carpets were a bit dated but the rooms had been freshly painted and the showers were great. There was also plenty of tea/coffee making facilities in the room. But the very best aspect was the friendliness and helpfulness of Jay and the owner and despite wearing face coverings they kept smiling! They were also able to cook us a fantastic breakfast before leaving. The owner can see the potential in the place and we’re sure it will go from strength to strength; places like this deserve our support so if you’re looking to stay in the area do give this place a chance to show you their fantastic customer service.

I wrote a review about the Thorverton Arms a month ago and was very pleased with our meal. Having eaten there again this week, I have some suggestions. For locals to eat regularly the menu will have to be changed more frequently, or add specials. The vegetarian option seems to be an afterthought. And the vegetarian option of the salad with warm chicken and bacon being just the salad really doesn’t count. When serving condiments please pretend that they are made on the premises. Putting a plastic bottle with the label on it on the table is more resemblant of a greasy spoon than a restaurant. Having said that, the service was good and the food was OK. But unless it ups it’s game the Thorverton Arms is yet again going to lose the good will of the locals.

We had lunch there yesterday. Decent moules and sweet/sour pork, but we never took our coats off, the place was so chilly. Service was great. Drinks were so-so. Being where it is, you’d expect local cider (Sandford) but only Thatchers or Scandinavian, which is odd for a mid-devon pub. We left well fed but chilly, and warmed up in the car on the way home.

Well under new management,,,again.I’ve been eating in The Thorverton Arms for 24 years. At first it was brilliant, The management was very professional. The days of Robert and Tina. Wonderful.Since they left the place it has slowly spiralled downhill.Well meaning locals tried to revive the business,So 6 of us visited the TA last week as we heard that a new chef had been appointed. The meal was OK. My cod loin was very tasty. Limited menu which I have no issue with but thought expensive. Plastic ham egg and chips at £12.00 ! and three scopes of ice cream at £6.75 !!! We all want this place to be is a success. Get a decent pub menu together, Watch what other people in the area charge.Put some life in the restaurant. When we went we were the only people eating yet we were placed at the far end of the restaurant area, Please TA get yourself set up and advertise yourself. A pizza sign outside is not what it’s about. Decent pub grub is what we want.Good luck

We revisited The Thorverton Arms for Sunday lunch today. The meal was excellent, good, tasty beef and very nicely cooked vegetables. The service was friendly , prompt and polite. Really good value... and the small roast was absolutely sufficient for me!

My family enjoyed a very tasty dinner here and were really impressed by the welcome and enthusiasm of Stephen and Alison. They are so enthusiastic about their ideas to be a village focal point!! Good luck for the café etc!!!!

We often drop in to the Thorverton Arms for lunch after a walk on the stunning Raddon Hills. Lots of vegan options, plenty of toys and great service from our waiter and barman, Tim. At this time of year the ancient Wisteria smells simply amazing. Lots of ales and ciders which are very reasonably priced. Characterful and spacious. Beer garden. Delightful village setting.

Staying in the village just a few minutes walk away, we came to the Thorverton Arms upon recommendation from our host. The kitchen was closed on the Monday night we first attempted to visit, but we came along on the Wednesday night to a warm welcome. Take a seat when it's offered; you get a table service, but you settle up at the bar on your way out.It was quite busy on our visit as there was a birthday party occupying most of the dining area, and so all the menus were in use requiring us to wait. The staff were very quick to inform us of what was going on, so we didn't mind to much, and the same happened when it came to ordering (obviously with a large party to cater for, the kitchen was quite busy and pressed to push out all those orders first so they would arrive together). In all, we waited about 30-35 minutes for the food from seeing the menu, but let this not be a reflection of the usual waiting time - and if you ever have to wait as long as we did, we can assure you the food was worth it!Wednesday night is Steak Night, and as prices go, £9.95 gets you a beautifully cooked 8oz rump steak or a rather large salmon fillet, with options of potatoes, creamy mashed potatoes, vegetables, and/or salad. All food on the menu is locally sourced and lovingly prepared and the portion sizes are hearty but not excessive. The bar and waiting staff were very attentive and fairly soon after we'd finished our meals, somebody came to clear our plates and offer the dessert menu. Desserts again are made from locally sourced ingredients, ranging between £5-6... And very yummy. A cheese board of local West Country cheeses is also available for those of you who would prefer that to something sweet.Honest and local pub grub in a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

I stayed B & B in the Thorveton. I was not at all keen on the room as it wasn't up to much at all so I wasn't expecting much of the food.I was pleasantly surprised. There was a good choice, it was very well presented, cooked perfectly and really tasty. The lady behind the bar was very attentive and everything about the food and service was great.Breakfast the next morning was more of the same.I would definitely eat there again if I lived locally but unfortunately I wouldn't stay there again. As I live across the other side of the country, its a long trek just for the excellent food !!

We visited the Thorveton Arms one evening this week. We phoned in advance to book a table and asked what meals could be provided gluten free. We were very impressed to find, upon arrival, that Alison (the landlady) had taken the time and trouble to mark up a copy of that evening’s menu to indicate which meals either were or could be cooked gluten free. And the food itself ? Good wide range of options on that evening’s menu plus specials with the accent very much on dishes that are much much more than “pub grub.” Perfectly cooked food, beautifully presented (it looked like the type of dishes you see photos of in up market magazines) and full of flavour. Service was very good although there was quite a long wait for dessert. We received a very warm welcome upon arrival and a very pleasant “ goodbye” when we were leaving. Another important issue for us, as one of us is a wheelchair user, is that it is a good location for us as they have adequate level parking at the rear and there was completely level access from the rear of the property right to our table. Also there are not a lot of eating places with a Disabled toilet in this area so The Thorverton Arms scores highly here as well.We will certainly be coming back for more meals here – the quality is far superior to anything else in this area that we have tried and it is a mystery to us as to why there are not more reviews of the Thorveton Arms on Trip Advisor. If you enjoy eating good quality meals we can highly recommend a visit to here

On 18th February three of us decided to drive over to the Thorverton Arms for an early evening dinner and a few drinks. We didn't expect too much but the new young chef there presented us with a very good selection of meals. For the first time I tried a lamb burger and it was tasty and moreish. The menu was limited as you would expect for a small village pub but the quality and style of the food is worth seeking out especially if you live in and around Exeter in Devon.

Really attentive service in this beautiful, spacious country pub. The new chef came up with a vegan dish at one hours notice on a Sunday. Inexpensive, good coffee and a good selection of wine and beer! Recommended!

The team at the Thorverton Arms cater for vegans very well and also produce good "traditional" food. After explaining we were a mixed family party of vegans and meat eaters with 4 children under 6 the team were very well prepared. Excellent food, great service, a lovely location in a beautiful village. Also a great selection of beers, ciders and wines on offer. We will no doubt be back!

Had last minute saturday lunch here sat in pretty pub garden in the sun. Good home cooked food which was well priced (home made burger and chips £6.95). Although not premium quality, for the price we could not fault it and was really tasty.

We ate here shortly before Christmas purely by chance and were pleasantly surprised by the standard of cooking. The sunday lunch was extremely good and the service excellent and I would have given it a higher rating apart from the other dishes ordered which were not quite as good. We shall certainly be returning again to give the lunch another try.

We popped in here after a family day at Crealy, good location and plenty of parking. Staff were brilliant very quick helpful and polite, carvery was really good plenty of meat and lots of veg options. Only thing that let the place down was the toilets were vile I mean disgusting and the place it's self isn't that clean, really gross carpets and dated.

Love this pub - we are locals and come here relatively often for drinks. Great location and the staff are great. Went for dinner on a Friday afternoon at 5pm. Pub quite busy but not overly. We were sat in the bottom room which seemed set up for food but there was a table of workmen next to us who had clearly just knocked off and were VERY excited for the weekend f-ing and blinding and getting more and more rowdy - it became a bit too much. Maybe separate the diners from the drinkers? Starters - shell-on king prawns - gorgeous but no finger bowl should’ve asked really but thought I’d get some abuse from the workmen for being posh (they commented on every plate that came out) - wife’s breaded chicken was somehow slimey?? Mains - sirloin steak ordered medium - was over cooked - wife’s steak pie was nice but the mashed potatoes were sooooo salty I couldn’t feel my teeth after trying them! All veggies and salads were lovely and fresh and service was great. Disappointing food experience but we do love the pub….
