Fish average, chips indifferent, scampi lukewarm and not crispy! Not a meal that means I’ll go back there, but better than hartlands or the frying machine! In fact fish and chips in Thorpe just aren’t very good, and expensive! It’s not rocket science but fish and chips are pretty basic, and not that difficult to get right, but no-one seems to be able to do it! Hartlands used to be good, but a change of ownership meant the meals went downhill! I do know what good fish and chips should taste like, sadly none of the chip shops impress around here!

Delicious fish and chips. Fish cooked to order. Piping hot 20 minutes later after when to a supermarket after. Good value for money. Really friendly staff and quick service.

First time I've used this chippy. Staff were friendly. Cod and chips were good. Banging pot of curry sauce. Offer gluten free batter option. Only accepts cash which I've no problem with.

Absolutely revolting. Used to be a regular here and it was a decent, quality chippy. Went in tonight and the food was appalling, no wonder the place was empty. Never again, go to Jason’s in Rackheath, it’s 1,000 times better. Binned the food, what a total waste. As previously pointed out its cash only too.

Oh my god Thorpe chippy is totally Wentworth with chips like cardboard and fish so disgusting 🫣 you will be ill so don't bother I hate this place!

Mega busy Chippy but everything ran like clockwork and was well organised, we didn't have to wait too long. Food was hot and portion sizes were very good. The chips needed more seasoning and I think that they were a bit tight on the salt and vinegar but overall it was very good.

Great food and friendly service

We always come here, even though it's not our closest chip shop, because they fry in vegetable oil. The team are also great - efficient and friendly.

Gluten free option which is great . We live other side of Norwich but worth the travel . Staff were so friendly .

Avoid. I’m not sure which is the worst bit, the scarecrow they use to police their parking spaces, the overpriced mediocre food or the fact they don’t take card payments, cash only, for obvious reasons. I won’t be contributing to a business that won’t contribute back. Throw in the megaphone the owner uses to shout anyone mistakenly parking in any of the spaces they never need and you’re far better off at the nearby alternative for numerous reasons.

Food is not as good as it was a few years ago. Ordered large haddock, and it came in 2 bits, and one was overcooked. Homemade curry rolls were good though.

Really good East Asian run place. Quickly served, nice food and the staff are very friendly. Really cute fish tank too! Parking might be an issue at peak times. Will likely come again if I'm peckish and in the area.

High octane service and one of the best fish and chip shops in Norwich

Really good fish and chips and especially so if you're gluten free like I am, they good in a separate frier in potato starch. Absolute godsend for coeliacs like me! I thought I'd never have fish and chips again!

It has no atmosphere being a fish and chip shop but the food is always top quality. Parking can be a pain

I have bought fish & chips on many occasions from Thorpe Fish Bar & have felt the standard to be very high. There have been a very few times when they haven’t been so good, however, today they were at their worst. The chips were good but the two medium plaice were awful. The fish were flat. The skin batter were chewy. We couldn’t finish it & ended up giving it to the dog. I wouldn’t even have complained but when I phoned the shop to tell the girl who answered, I felt she didn’t really care.

We bought a regular chips and large chips with a battered sausage, all made in good time. Saw they did curry spring rolls (99p each) so had to try. Chips were delicious and they curry spring rolls...absolutely beautiful! Would go again just for those! Lovely service and atmosphere too. Reasonably priced, cheaper than some in surrounding area. Very nice all round!

This is our favourite local fish and chip shop. Food is always freshly cooked and delicious and you don't have to wait long to be served even though it is usually busy and popular. Staff are lovely and friendly, pleased to see you and always give efficient personal service. Often hear them asking people how they are and listen to customers woes with polite concern. It is always a pleasure to visit and the quality of food is excellent. Thank you for such great service. We love you and your food.

Found this place 3 months ago and never looked back. Staff are amazingly welcoming with a fantastic novelty shout out when your order is ready from the fish and chips chef. Great portions here you'll never go hungry fingerlicking good. Some places get fish and chips so wrong, these guys get it so right. Try for yourself I promise you'll love the experience and most importantly you'll love your fish and chip supper.

Having lived in Norfolk for over 20 years I’ve tried so many fish & chip shops. The best in my opinion is Thorpe Fish Bar If i am lucky to be working locally or travelling from a meeting i just have to call for my favourite Cod & Chips Food is always so nice Staff are always so nice Great portion sizes Highly recommended

Great service and fantastic fried chicken. The best in the city and better then KFC. I go there one a week and just can’t get enough of their chicken. Great chips and also great battered sausages and a surprisingly good cheese burger that was better than I expected.

Just wanted to make a review on my visit this evening. 1st... called up to place a (ready to collect order) under (Dexter) at 7.45pm. which was very easy to do and the staff skills are so on point. From the moment I stepped in they ALL greeted me with my name & made me feel so welcome. The manager took the time to come out to speak to me and to greet me. The service is like no other. I've been to many 'fancy' restaurants and not even received this type of service.... The food, well... another level again. Its so on point its unreal it perfect. Quality is just 100% packed, served & cooked! Curry sauce.. its not runny, its not lumpy its not over thick.. its so on point. The cod- you can tell the oil is good and fresh as of the the look and taste. Worth every penny! By bar the best fish and chip bar in NORFOLK

Wow friendly owner not. Greeted with a sarcy what do you want! Tried to talk over me everytime i spoke and didnt listen because he was busy with a empty car park. Your fish could be the best sir but your attitude is less than standard you wont last very long id rather find somewhere else

Great food, cheerful staff, NB cash only

Visited yesterday, spent almost £40, 4 pieces of ‘regular size’ cod, 2 small sausages, 3xsmall chips, 1 small tub of peas and 1 curry sauce, and 2 ‘buttered’ rolls which look liked they’d been ‘buttered’ days previous! Took them back to my family we were visiting, unwrapped them. All 3 portions of chips were disgusting, looked like they had been reheated from lunchtime. also looked like the fat/oil needed changing in the pans, therefore the majority of the chips went in the bin. Fish was passable but very expensive considering the size of it, worked out £8.50 for a regular cod and chips. Rather pricey for a takeaway. Wouldn’t mind if it was all edible. There’s no way I would visit this shop again.

One of the very few fish and chips open tonight 03.01.2022! Slightly pricier than others but worth it. Very efficient and quick service. Lots of customers coming to collect telephone orders - always a good sign. Cod was very fresh and not over cooked. Chips were slightly over cooked. Would return if I was in the area. Daughter had chicken nuggets (x8) which were freshly cooked.

Two of my friends work here they work for a pitiful wage and never get to do anything or their inconsistent times. The foods pretty good tho

The best curry sauce in Norwich

It’s a bank holiday Monday and my usual “Frying Machine” was closed, so tried this as I had heard good things. I’m not sure if this overall star rating is before a change of ownership, or people have lost their taste buds. I’m assuming the former. The fish was swimming in grease, awfully so. It welded to the paper and I had a job getting it out of the paper. It didn’t taste especially fresh either. The batter is heavy and just absorbs all the fat/oil. *edit* After going into the fish it is clear this has also been recooked. The end of the tail is grey and smells funny. I feel sick. It’s inedible. The chips had been massively overcooked, at a guess I would say recooked. My daughter has a sausage and I can tell it’s a cheap sausage, again with very heavy batter, greasy. Disappointed and won’t be going back. Hope this review helps others avoid the same disappointment I am feeling now. They also don’t take card, cash only, which in this day and age just strikes me as extremely odd. Go to “Frying Machine” on Furze Road if you want decent fish and chips, avoid Thorpe Fish Bar.

We were looking for something to take back to our hotel tonight and came across this. Found the Staff very friend and helpful and it didn't take long before our food was ready. My partner was talking to a lady who said this was the best fish and chips in the area, even though she had come from a few miles away not locally.

We all had haddock and chips, was very nice, loads of chips. Mushy peas and curry sauce are worth an investment.

The chips i had were overcooked, dry, hard and had a dirty brown colour, they also had an old stale greasey smell, they tasted horrendous and at a cost of £2.70 i was extremely pis..d off, this was my third visit and i have no idea why i went back a second or third time, and although the staff are friendly enough thats not going to satisfy my hunger is it, the owners claim to have been there for 30 years is very hard to believe because he has no idea how to cook chips, and i believe he insults a customers intelligence by serving up reheated leftover chips from the previous day. . .i wont be going back.

Very disappointed as we had been recommended this fish & chip shop Fish was eatable but lacked taste or flavour don’t know what they did to it, chips were small to large scraggy bits soggy not crispy at all also they only take cash really! With covid going on! We ordered Three large haddock & chips as it was produced fairly quickly which makes me think it was re heated! Very poor will never go back ever, don’t go there! Friendly staff and nice portions of food, however, this is the second time that I have been and both the chips and batter are dry…they have basically been re-heated! I thought it might have been a one off the first time but it wasn’t. Secondly for the second time running I have had a belly ache since eating them and feel like being sick, I’m not sure it’s it’s the oil they use that makes me like this or if it’s the fact they have more than obviously re-heated there food.

£20 for 2 cod and chips with 2 cans very expensive The chips were hard the fish was ok but not great They don’t take card payments? So obviously on the tax fiddle will not use them again !

An excellent chippy with friendly service and food that always tastes fresh and hot. There is a small amount of inside seating and some temporary parking spaces outside.
