I cannot recommend this place enough, it is spotlessly clean. Served by excellent staff and the food is delicious, presented well and reasonably priced. The general ambiance was relaxed and although I’m not keen on tv screens, they weren’t over bearing. I would definitely revisit as they allowed our pooches in. If their bedrooms are as clean and as good as their food is - it would be a great place to stay!

The Thornhill Inn would appear to be a side business for the adjoining restaurant. Situated in the centre of the very attractive village of Thornhill it is no doubt a fine place drink or dine. When we visited on a Monday evening however the signs on the restaurant door advised that they were closed for the first few days of the week, and the locked doors of the pub suggest that the same applies there. Indeed, we were advised later by the landlord at the nearby (and excellent) Farmer’s Arms that the Thornhill Inn only opens for two or three days a week. So if you come when it’s closed, and you only want a drink, I highly recommend a short stroll along the road to the Farmer’s, which is a fine example of a traditional Scottish pub that stays open.

Visiting the area from within Dumfries and Galloway, I was expecting a warm welcome as a visitor. Unfortunately, apparently I should have booked ahead. The ‘restaurant’ (bar with tables) had one table occupied with four guests. In a larger room it appears that the local Rotary Club were in, it’s a regular thing, but because of this another two people couldn’t be accommodated, obviously they hadn’t anticipated additional guests! This is all despite, or maybe because of, the prices being significantly above what you might expect for the area. If they can afford to turn folk away, when they aren’t especially busy, best of luck to them

Went in for evening meal with my wife ,ordered main course each. Waited 40 minutes for it to arrive. Deary me I got the battered fish and my wife got curry. If farm foods done restaurants then this is it. So bland and greasy I got what was called Tiger chips. Sweet potato and normal potato combined. Cold and greasy and uneadable. £14**and £13 eachI did complain but met with silence. Expensive lesson learned

The Thornhill Inn is in the center if Thornhill, a fairly quiet Scottish town. We came to have dinner with friends and family following a sad event. For us that fact that the pub was quiet (I think that our table was the only one in there) was perfect. It meant that we could all catch up and was almost akin to private dining. The staff did well accommodating the various order requests (children’s, starters, mains etc) for a party of 10 so that it all arrived hot and in time. The food was good (my salmon was lovely and cooked correctly). The children’s look great and the other food delicious. The staff left us alone, which was great but can when we rang the bell. For us it was perfect, but perhaps not the venue for a rorcous night out.

Visited tonight as part of a family gathering. Walked in to be greeted by “Your tables there!” With a nod of direction by the member of staffs head. Service was extremely slow & at times rude! Almost like staff couldn’t be bothered with the effort. Took over 2hrs from start of our meal to the bill was paid. But a group who were staying in the hotel seemed to get served a lot more promptly. Would hate to have seen if the place was busy. Food was ok/average. Service god awful!! 2 stars is being generous.

We were staying in nearby Sanquhar and a local recommended this place. The waitress could not have been more attentive and accommodating. We had specialist dietary needs but menu offered considerable choice (gf: fish and chips...hurrah!) and food was scoffed by all. 3 lots of fish and chips, the fish curry and sea bass, all very tasty but actually it was the really lovely service that made the difference.. They had a big group in their suite too and still attentive. Simple pub nosh served well, would def recommend.

Paid £30 for 2 meals - 3 if you count the fact they brought out the wrong choice of haddock first - and an orange squash and diet coke. Quality was like a 2 meals for a tenner type pub. Haddock was bland, prawns were cheap and cold, potatoes had no salt or butter on them, and the sauce was out of a bottle. Really disappointing and way overpriced for what we got! AVOID!!!

Went here recently for a group meal for 10 people. The food, very good although the menu hasn't changed much in recent times. The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was for a Friday evening. It should have been at least quarter full. It became apparent that the waitress service was lacking any kind of training. One member of our group was repeatedly invisible to the waitress. Not bringing the starter (not writing it down to begin with) so they were eating when most were finished. Not taking the plate away, on several occasions. Charging us for three bottles of wine instead of three glasses! Generally very slow. Seemed they could only carry two plates at a time, so clearing a table of 10 three times took forever. I am now certain that it is because of the painful service that the establishment is not busy. The local hotel just a few doors down is extremely busy so it cannot be lack of trade. I may try it again in a few months time and see if it has improved. If you are reading this Thornhill Inn, please train your waiting staff!! On the plus side, the food was very nice.

We stayed at the Thornhill Inn recently to attend a family wedding. First impressions were quite good, the room was large and my partner was very happy to discover we had a bath. Closer inspection and it was a different story. Our double bed was two singles pushed together with a three inch gap between the mattresses due to the bed frames. No double quilt either, we were given two small singles instead. After a restless night, my partner got up to have a bath only to find the taps had been removed. We headed downstairs hoping for a hearty pre wedding breakfast. There was a small selection of cereal to choose from and we both ordered a full Scottish breakfast from the menu. What came back was possibly the meanest plate of food we've ever had. One of each of bacon, sausage and egg, half a tomato, a mushroom in the singular and an egg cup full sized portion of haggis. At least we had a rack of toast to share. To double up your items is an extra £5 per person, when you're paying £85 a night for a below average room I believe the least you should expect is a good breakfast. We also discovered check out was at ten the next day, not ideal. We won't be rushing back.

We live just outside of Thornhill and were in a party of 11 to celebrate a birthday. Not that many people in at 18:30 so we were quickly served drinks and orders taken for starters & mains etc - No complaints there, problems started when more covers arrived. We had to wait the best part of an hour for our main, all might I add, when they eventually arrived, were excellent quality albeit rather pricey for small portions, £27.00 for a fillet steak and a few chips is, in my opinion, overcharging. After our mains, we were totally forgotten about, a member of the party had to go to the bar to order more drinks. After 1 hour 10 minutes, we came to the conclusion that nobody was coming back to ask if we wanted desserts, so decided to call it a night and make our own desert back home. The Thornhill Inn lost out on at least another £100.00 (as we were all going to order desserts, coffees and shorts to celebrate the birthday) all because the waiting staff were too busy chatting behind the bar and not paying attention to their customers. I have to work damn hard for my money and totally begrudge giving it away on such POOR SERVICE. I managed to speak to the owner, whilst she was mildly apologetic, I felt it just fell on deaf ears and were offered no compensation or even an explanation. As a local to the area, I and most of the party I was with will not be returning - bad news travels fast in these parts, so I think a major retraining program is required for the un-attentive staff. Not good enough. To summarize, if you have hours to waste for nice food and have lots of disposable cash then fine, otherwise try somewhere else as you will be disappointed here.

We live in thornhill and have visited a few times with the kids. No longer! We ordered kids meals first and were quickly delivered and as always they enjoyed them all. Shame adults meals aren't consistent. My meal was ok not as I would say medium rare more medium. My partners first choice wasn't available after waiting ages to be told this. She ordered same as me as was delivered at the same time. Now her lamb was way way over cooked she ordered medium rare got more well done. We complained and was told that they came off the same cut. Not a valid excuse. This is a shame. The cheesy potatoes and gravy is lovely tinned carrots can be excused but isn't hard to get carrots and do it yourself. We then ordered coffee two lattes which on arrival were boiling hot and milk curdled they took them off the bill but left the lamb dish and wouldn't even remove it upon paying we not once were offered fresh lamb cooked right just to cook them more......not the issue. The kids meals are perfect id suggest only ever having a kids meal as an adult serving. Also no kids desserts!? Only option is a huge adult serving. We shall never go again due to the inability to take criticism the manager is sheepish when confronted about things and just basically says people like the lamb. You don't care about this when your lamb is not right.

Have been here for a meal 3 times now, every time its utterly delish! The only reason I put a 'but' and knocked a star off is the portion size when ordering the sea bass either for starters or mains. Now its the tastiest dish but the 1st time my mum ordered this as a mains and the fillet was really small. On the 2nd visit I ordered as a starter and got the same size fillet as she had as a main! and on the 3rd visit I ordered it again as was so tasty and the fillet was cut in half! so was a really small portion! So my only gripe is don't mess with your portion sizes as the sea bass with stir fried veg is amazing but I wouldnt order again for fear of getting the crappy sized cut in half fillet (or a starter size fillet for a mains) as it isnt cheap (but if you get the full fillet well worth it!)Apart from that the food here is utterly AMAZING!!!!! Better than some 5 star places I have eaten! well worth a visit. The lamb and duck are a winner and the cheesey potatoes are to DIE FOR. We ate here on a Monday evening as its right across the road from the Kelton B&B where we stayed. The place wasn't extremely busy, but enough people in to make it comfortable. The barmaid came to your table to take your orders and you could have your drinks put on the bill rather than having to pay separately like at other places. My husband had the gammon at £9.90 and I had the Steak Pie, also £9.90. They arrived piping hot, and extremely tasty. Very large helpings too with proper veg, not just peas.I had read that some people had waited quite a while for their food to be brought, but I think we didn't have long to wait before it was delivered to our table. With two meals, a garlic bread for starter, 1/2 pint cider, pint of lager, cup of tea and a whisky the total bill was £31.90. We would definitely eat her again and would highly recommend it.

Had a great meal at the thornhill inn. The food was lovely, portions are a very good size and the prices are very reasonable. The staff are all very friendly. Very easy to relax and enjoy a long meal, don't feel like you are being rushed to finish. Not the most modern décor but cosy and welcoming. Would definitely return!

A real mixed bag here. We waited 45 mins for our main course to arrive. When it did both our meals were delicious. We then ordered cheese and oatcakes. After 30 mins a waitress told us she would chase it up. I am sure she tried to. After another 15 - 20 mins we decided enough was enough and asked for the bill. Yes by this time the place was busy but how hard is it to put cheese on a plate?. The waiting on staff were lovely and were very apologetic. On the plus side - what we ate was good and everything coming out of the kitchen looked equally good. Down sides - the waiting time. If going ask for a table not close to the bar as ours was. At one point we were surrounded, literally, by people waiting to be told which table they had been allocated. The ladies toilet looked clean but smelt terribly of stale urine. I am told the gents was absolutely fine. Maybe we just got unlucky.

This is our second visit to the Thornhill Inn this year, we are on holiday again in this part of the country, lovely variety of food on the menu, someone made a comment about having to wait a while on their food, I don't think waiting 30mins when the bar and restaurant is busy and our food was piping hot, thoroughly enjoyed it didn't have a sweet as our main meal was filling enough. Very friendly staff, will be back again.

I have eaten in this Inn before, about 20 years ago, when it was a good pub with standard fare. It still is a good pub, with helpful bar staff and decent beer to surprise southerners, Flying Horse by Sulwath of Castle Douglas. The food now is far from standard. It is superbly cooked and presented, very tasty, and despite this is reasonably priced. If you want to explore Dumfries, B&B at Gillbank in Thornhill and eat here.

Just returned home from ameal here tonight and am so so angry, I just had to say what I thought. Arrived at 7pm, ordered at 7.05pm, meal arrived 7.50pm (couple at another table arrived after us, ordered, were served and near to paying by the time our meal arrived. So my prime roast beef in yorkshire pud arrived (man who served it called it steak pie and he was so right), chumks of vbeef and ale which was in the bar menu. My meal, cold. very nice waitress took mine away to reheat. My husbands, cold also. An old lady, wait for this, actually put her hand in my husbands meal and felt the veg to see if they were indeed cold. My husand said just leave it please but in mid fork she whisked it away from under his nose. My dessert, described as hot choc and hazelnut sundaue arrived. Squirty cream by the bucketload, fudge sauce and chopped up nuts. Unreal! £46.00! No apology for the delay or quality of meals. I go to Lochside House, Cumnock Dumfries Arms and Railway Inn Auchinleck regularly, have never paid £46.00 for a meal and never had a bad meal. And each of these places know what a sundae is - its a tall glass filled with ice cream etc and usually isnt £4.75 for half a bowl of squirty cream. Lastly, my husband is in the hiospitality trade and he said he would never ever let customers leave so upset or disappointed in their meals. They made us pay the full price and didnt even give us so much as a coffee free. I wont be back and when asked tomorrow how I enjoyed my meal, I will be truthful and sau it was the worse experience in a hotel I have had in years. Enjoy the £46.00 you got from us tonight, you certainly earn your money easy and definately DO NOT give value for money

I have eaten at the Thornhill Inn on many occasions, and I have never been disappointed. The service is always efficient and friendly, the background noise is low, and the food has never failed to please. I especially like the duck and sticky toffee pudding. A great place to eat if you are in Thornhill.

Photo of bedroom at the thorn hill in does not reflect what you get. Stayed for three nights and rooms very basic, the bath taps and plug had been removed as you are not allowed to have a bath. Breakfast very poor and inadequate.Evening meals were very good. Hotel needs to update the photos on the website to reflect the rooms you will be getting. Would not recommend anyone to stay, will never book there again

Stayed a night in Thornhill on way back from family visit in Kintyre to home in Worcs. and ate here. Not a gourmet establishment but good food well presented and served. Good varied menu (I has venison followed by cheesecake) and fairly wide choice of wine. A pleasant friendly atmosphere and the place was quite crowded on a Friday evening.

Been here a few times and love the place, food and service are very good. Wide selection of food to suit everyone, from mince and tatties, fish and chips (with a posher discription) to more fancy pasta and game dishes. Its the kind of place you can go dressed to the nines for a romantic date, family gathering or a bussiness dinner etc or jeans and shirt do just as well. It feels posh but with out the associated snobbery and high prices. It is a comfortable and relaxing place to eat and have a few quiet drinks, where the main bar is next door seperate from the restaurant. My only personal complaint is that they need to bring back the brie wedges on the starter, as they were removed after the menu change. But the garlic mushrooms go down just as well. We keep going back for birthdays and anniversaries as it so nice. we havnt been anywhere different for 5 years now.

We ate here and finished our meal, the waitress cleared away and we decided we'd have another round of drinks before leaving. We waited 5, 10 minutes and the waitress never came back. I went in search of someone but couldn't find our waitress. I didn't like to open the doors to the kitchen. We waited another 5 minutes and my wife said 'this is ridiculous' and went off in pursuit. She found our waitress in the bar (was she watching TV, did she fancy the barman?) and asked if we could get some service. The waitress said 'the restaurant is closed', as if we were being unreasonable in expecting to be served a round of drinks. No, the restaurant isn't closed if you've still got people sitting at a table you're serving and you haven't asked them if they want a dessert or offered them the bill but simply buggered off. So we said OK, can we just pay the bill. Which we did, and obviously didn't leave tip. We won't be going back.

This restaurant is part of Smiths hotel at Gretna Green. We were in the final days of our holiday in Scotland and wanted to have a special meal. We were staying at the hotel and saw this had good reviews. Well it didn’t disappoint. It was good that you could pick and mix from the a la carte menu and the bar menu. Every course was very good. Because we had courses from both menus I didn’t think it was too expensive. The service was good although it was very busy with other events going on. The staff were kept busy but were still attentive to our needs. Would recommend if you want something special or just for an evening meal.

A super bed and breakfast with a lovely vegan curry and home baked ecclefechan tart in the bar which had an open fire. Steve and Mary looked after us like a mum and a big brother. Could not do enough for us including a very welcome lift to and from hoddom Bridge as we were walking the annandale way. And a packed lunch to order. Will recommend to all, especially walkers.

We had a day out yesterday and ended up here for coffee. The sign at the entrance said the cafe was open until 4.30. As it was just before 4 when we parked round the back we thought we had plenty of time. However when we entered the cafe I approached the counter to order I was told in no uncertain terms that they were shut. When I pointed out that their sign had said it was open until 4.30 the rude assistant pointed to the sign on the counter which said last orders 4. I said it was 4 and we only wanted coffees she said 'well we're shut'. You would think that after 2 years of pandemic that businesses would be grateful for any money they could get, well that's not the case in this cafe. We had been going to buy some plants but left empty handed and on the way out told the assistant in the shop that we wouldn't be back. Their loss is someone else's gain
