On behalf of a relative who visited yesterday. Small fish, really greasy. Trading under Thompson’s name but nowhere near the quality. Cash only which is an inconvenience. Won’t be returning.

I left a bad review a couple of years ago, that's after having wonderful fish and chips for years from here. Today I tried again as they are very local to me, wish I hadn't. Very thin, overcooked fish (thinner than a fish finger), the chips were hard, 'scrappy' and luke warm. I'm sure they were left from last night as they had only been open 10 minutes, although I can't be sure. If you want good fish and chips, go 5 minutes further onto the A64 to Thompson's (not connected) or Miller's in Haxby, both wonderful!

This is our local chippy. We called in tonight at 19.55 and was told abruptly that they were closing in 5 mins but if we join the end of a 4 person queue we could possibly have what scraps were left. It’s not as if fish and chips are cheap in Stamford bridge. We certainly will not be going back, we are in the next village towards York and York will be getting our business in the future

We live close by and this place just can’t get it right! Is it so difficult to get fish and chips takeaway with a decent sized fish and chips that’s aren’t overcooked, warm at best and very thin! Is this really the same place as the one on the A64? It would be nice to have service with a smile as well, but then again it appears to be staffed by 16 year olds who probably haven’t been trained!

I live locally and when you time it right (ie they have just come out of the fryer) the fish and chips can be great, go a bit later and it’s a different story - soggy small fish stuck to the batter so very chewy and also soggy chips. This isn’t the first time this has happened to me . Perhaps if you get there and there’s only 2 fish left request they cook you a fresh one!!! Not great value for money when served the way I got them this evening !

After returning to live in the area, we were so excited about this little chip shop as we always remembered it as an excellent serving of Fish & Chips. Not any more, the fish was dry (overcooked), the batter tasteless and the portion of chips was very small. The service usually by teenage girls is often rude and slow, but to be fair I don't think they have good leadership. Tonight we will be purchasing our Fish & Chips elsewhere. The heart has gone from this one brilliant chip shop. Suggest avoiding.

Great, local chippy. Products are cooked in beef dripping, so veggies / vegans may need to avoid. Saying that, I only know of one chippy in York that uses vegetable oil. Child are nicely chunky, but not overly thick. Fish is fresh, with a light and crisp batter. The menu is quite extensive, so definitely more than a one trick pony. Being ultra critical, the size of the fish (haddock) and quantity of chips could be larger, and it does seem to depend on who is serving as to the amount of scoops of chips you get.

My husband went for fish and chips to take out. He asked for cod and chips twice with mushy peas and breadcakes. He is a clear speaker but the woman serving got him haddock so she had to redo the order. She then wrapped both pieces of cod together in the same wrapping and wrapped the two sets of chips separately. When he got home which wasn't far the two pieces of cod were stuck together and the batter was soft and mushy and not at all pleasant. Then we found one breadcake was buttered and the other was not. We were expecting both to be buttered. Perhaps the woman serving was new or she was having a bad day, but he got the impression she didn't know what she was doing. As fish and chips are no longer a cheap meal this was disappointing -we tend to have them asa treat rather than the norm

Popped in here looking forward to sitting at one of the many lovely tables outside surrounded by the beautiful baskets of flowers and enjoying the sun. For some reason they were all empty. Needed to sit outside to keep our pup happy too. Unfortunately on asking, it transpires waitered service isn't available outside, so the only option was the takeaway which was disappointing as I was hoping to use a knife, fork, glass and crockery, rather than polystyrene, a plastic fork and a cola from a can. Heyho, too far from where we were staying to order and take it back. Fish was cod, cooked to order and the portion sizes are large and very reasonably priced. Batter was light, fish OK. Lots of choice on takeaway menu, from haddock and cod, through to pies, burgers and fishcakes breaded and Yorkshire battered (unusual for a Southerner). All the accompaniments, mushy peas, gravy, curry sauce.

My daughter and son in law came to visit us whilst we were staying in our caravan. We had said how nice it was and suggested having fish and chips from there again. But, the fish was tough and the piece of fish my daughter had was such a skinny portion it was all batter and no fish. The chips were very dry and endy it was like they had been reheated such a shame.

After having fish & chips from here for over 10/12 years, something has changed, gone wrong, gone bad. They were always piping hot, fresh out the fryer and moist and crispy in the right areas. We went in yesterday, after noticing on the last two visits that they weren't quite as good as they used to be and oh my! The chips were luke warm and must have seen the deep fat fryer a few hours earlier and the fish, well we could barely eat it. Hard fish, brittle, cold batter, it really did take some swallowing. That's it, we certainly won't be back, we'll travel the other way to Thompson's on the A64, they are a little bit more expensive, but we won't feel like we have been ripped off.

This place use to be exceptional! What have you done? You have an easy foot flow, low rates, no need to advertise, a great village to be proud of and this is how you reward the community by the following:-1. Employing ill trained children who clearly don't know what they are doing in servings and cooking the fish and chips, with no sign of any adult supervision;2. Employing children who in front of customers are more interested in talking amongst themselves about their night time activities. Do customers really need to know all the details of who fancies who and what x got to up to with fake ID and underage drinking?3. Employing children who are just rude;4. Servicing Cold to Warm at best food!5. Serving ridiculously small portions!6. Serving stale/reheated food!7. Charging City Centre Prices!Surely operating in this manor breaches some sort or H&S at work legislation?I have just been in here today and ordered some Fish & Chips to take away for the family, the portions were so small and prices so high, I even queried the portion size and price with the child serving and just got told "No thats it"! £1.70 for a bag of chips, look at the picture!!!!As Yoda says "Do or Do Not, There is No Try", come on Stamford Bridge Community deserves to get the old Fish & Chip shop back!Interestingly other reviews are similar to this!

... or so it would seem with so many Trip Advisor reviews. You can please some of the people all the time, all of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. All I can do is share my view from a recent visit....And I'm firmly in the "this place does very good fish and chips" camp. The fish is nicely done, lovely and flaky, and the chips are pretty decent, too. Both in plentiful portions. I was told by locals that the standard fish and chips used to be £4.70 but it's now £5.10. It's still very good value for this (there are pricier places in the country which don't serve something as good as this).Service was pleasant enough and very efficient. I'd happily recommend it, whether staying in the village or passing through. Take care when crossing the road through the village - it's very busy at times and the chippie is next to the pub on the hill (on your left if entering from the east coast side, just up the hill after you come around the S-bend corner past the shops if arriving from York side). There is very limited parking opposite, plus options by the shops and near the bridge (turn off just before/after the bridge, depending which way you are arriving).I think it's worth a visit. Some clearly do not. You decide.

It looks like some Tripadvisor reports are confusing Thompson's of Stamford Bridge with Thompson's on the A64 near York. They are two separate businesses.I live in Thornton le Dale, a long way from Stamford Bridge but today I chose to drive to Thompson's for a fish and chip lunch. I have been there before and had several take aways. The fish and chips are excellent and I was prompted to head for their cafe, rather than sit in my car or stand out in the cold October air. When I arrived it was just before closing but I managed to get a seat in the cafe area and was served almost immediately. What is so good about fish and chips is the level of expectation. There is nothing better than the very moment that the fish and chips arrive and the salt and vinegar is showered onto the chips, the lemon squeezed onto the fish. Only today there was no lemon and the top fell off the vinegar container giving me more vinegar than I actually wanted. However, there was no taking anything away from this fish and chip experience. The portion size was twice what I would usually eat; I anticipated not eating for the whole following weekend. The fish was twelve inches and there was a shovel full of chips. This was all accompanied by a very large mushy peas, bread and butter and a pot of tea and all for £8.80 Half way through this meal I knew that I was not going to finish. The fish was beautifully cooked with a crispy batter and the chips expertly prepared. I enjoyed the meal but didn't quite get there, I left about six chips, half the peas and a piece of bread. What a lunch! Will I be back ? Too right!

Thompsons on the A64 heading out of York. Forget the starter as you need all the space available for the main course. So far we've tried the take-away a couple of times, the fish is huge and the wife particularly recommends the Spam Fritter. So we had to try the main restaurant and so have been through the salad, rack of ribs, fish pie, burgers, steak, hunters chicken, buts that's all so far this week!So don't just sit there, for under £12 each these could all be in your belly too.

Staying on a campsite nearby so decided to try this place out. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Fish and chips portions were good and nicely cooked. The place was clean and the staff cleared away quickly. The only downside to coming here was the A64 trying to get out was a nightmare. The traffic was never ending. But even with the traffic it well worth a visit. I will be visiting again.

Nice decor , very busy so it is popular but I found the huge portion lacked flavour & the fish in batter cooked perfectly didn't taste of anything & if blindfolded I couldn't have guessed it was haddock or even fish . Service excellent staff very nice thought it over priced slightly

Went here with work. Ordered three scampi and chips. We did wait awhile for the food but to know it was freshly cooked was great. The portions were enormous! Couldn't finish a whole plate full! Great service, a mix of mature and young ladies who served us. Also used the takeaway before and the service was friendly and super speedy! Will visit again soon!!!

Best fish and chips around. Been out of the area for a while, but they are still the best, now we're back!

Small & friendly. Food was fine but could have done with more chips! Clean and tidy however the hand drier was rubbish. The tables are small but everything else was fine.

Three of us had the best seller, amazing! Dad wants to come back again to try a pie. Also amazing burger for the non-fish fan... Great service, great food. Enjoy on your way to or from the seaside!

We called in here on our way to Thornton le dale for lunch, it was beautiful food, couldn't believe the price, there was 4 of us and it came to £17 with drinks, we sat outside in the glorious sunshine and it was lovely, the exterior was very pretty and the staff were great, we've passed numerous times and never called in. So glad we did. Thank you!

We went on a quiet Sunday afternoon out of season because the previous review said they allowed the dog to go inside. I asked if we could take the pup in and sit out of the way in the corner. The lady said no sorry I don’t allow dogs in at all.

This cafe is now called Miss Bs pantry. Very friendly ladies and delicious food. As a coeliac myself I have to have gluten free. This is very well catered for here so my partner and I have visited on numerous occasions.Various selection of savoury dishes and cakes. Lovely latte too. Well worth a visit.

We had lunch at The Potting Shed with family. This was a return visit, and we think it’s the best garden centre restaurant in the area. Soup was carrot and coriander (delicious, could’ve eaten more!), sandwiches were very fresh, and the haddock and chips were delicious. Restaurant is very clean and well laid out, tables not too close together. I’m sure we’ll be back!

Niño amable, acogedor. Siempre una excelente pinta y un montón de ofertas de bebidas disponibles. Jardín de cerveza que es seguro y cerrado para los niños para jugar.

One tip - AVOID! Frozen overwhelmingly fishy fish 🤮 unacceptable and the tables were grim! We wiped the tables with baby wipes (after ordering) and they were black. Wouldn’t have ordered if we knew this then the food was just awful!
