Visited as I was gifted a voucher, but will definitely be back. What a treat. The food was superb, but what really shone out was the service from Abi: thank you. She is an absolute asset, and made our evening. From realising that the group next door were quite loud and offering to pull the door across, to balancing professionalism and humour perfectly. We both thoroughly enjoyed our food (although I'm annoyed he refused to participate in dessert, I wanted to try both!) The lemon choux was absolute perfection.

Service is impeccable. Food was delicious. 2 menus to choose from. The a la carte and the tasting menu. The only downside is the parking, NOT the restaurants fault. All on street parking and as we came on a Saturday evening. Parking spaces were sparse.

Overpriced and would not recommend. Considering the price point there were multiple things which made me feel the need to leave a review. The table: 2 glued together (rather than 1 big table) which had a step where they were glued together (not flush). No table cloth Benches could have been wider, the table had an overhang so either the table is ‘too wide’ or the benches are too short. Food: very average for this price point to the point i would say disappointing to then take the trouble to come to this restaurant rather than another Drink: reasonable Service: primary waiter came across as a bit distant and unfriendly (velvet jacket) Paying £15 for a course to be added onto the tasting menu rather than it being included (even if it means an (obvious) increase in cost to the tasting menu’s cost) felt very nickel and dime. Optioning truffles for a dish that obviously benefits from it, very nickel and dime (again) I think it was laughable a service charge was included on the bill but i wasnt the event organiser to challenge it so let it be. I would rather leave no review than a negative review generally, but this place really took the biscuit with being so much below the expected standard for its price point .

This place is mega. I had the vegetarian tasting menu and every dish was banging. Highly recommend!

EXCELLENT food! But the service did not live up to the same level as the cooking. Not as attentive as they should have and not a fan of server not informing you on certain charges. Asked for some still water and they brought a whole bottle and there is a $4 charged on my check.

What a fabulous evening spent at this wonderful venue. Service and staff are exceptional, food is absolutely outstanding. Flavours and menu so well thought out. Cocktails moreish and so unusual. The ambience and deco so stylish and welcoming. We literally stayed all evening at the bar after dinner. 10/10 highly recommended.

Incredible food. Simply outstanding.

I was thrilled to be able to bring my family last night to the Thomas experience. It's my favourite restaurant and it didn't disappoint at all. The food, the service and ambience were incredible. The mushroom croquettes are always a firm favourite for me. The staff are so attentive and so professional. Thank you for making a poignant evening celebrating my late husband's life so special.

Dined for lunch on Wednesday . Thomas by Tom Simmons boasts a beautifully designed interior, featuring warm wooden floors and a stylish bar area with seating at the entrance. The main dining space, located in the next room, is elegantly compartmentalized with just five tables and two additional tables furnished with mid-century green chairs. White and green wood-paneled walls create a refined yet cozy atmosphere, complemented by wooden tables and globe pendant lights that add a soft, inviting glow. The new Colombian rum cocktail with blood orange, lime, and sparkling wine was disappointing, lacking depth and balance. In contrast, the Negroni was well-executed, delivering the bold and bittersweet flavors expected from the classic cocktail. For starters, the seared bread with caramelized truffle Marmite butter offered a delightful contrast of rich, umami flavors with a hint of sweetness. The chicken liver parfait, served with brioche, was beautifully balanced, featuring a fine jelly layer and a vibrant blood orange segment that added freshness. However, the plate used for this dish was unstable, tilting when cutting the brioche, which made for a slightly frustrating dining experience. The trout was expertly cooked and elegantly presented on a bed of leek cream sauce, with delicate pearls adding texture. The broccoli gratin was another highlight with the crispy and golden with a rich, creamy interior, though it was slightly on the salty side. Dessert did not disappoint. The white chocolate with rhubarb was excellent, striking the right balance between sweetness and tartness. Service was attentive and professional, and the lunch menu overall provided great value, both satisfying and well-priced. A solid dining experience with some truly standout dishes, though minor details, such as the plating and certain flavour imbalances, could be refined further.

We visited for Sunday lunch as a group of four. The atmosphere was delightful, and the service was attentive, but the food didn’t quite meet expectations, particularly given the price. While some of us enjoyed certain aspects of the meal, it didn’t stand out as a top choice for a fancy Sunday lunch. It might be worth visiting on another weekday instead.

One of my favourite places in Cardiff. I have had several taster menus through the seasons here and they have all been superb. They also have an excellent selection of wines and very attentive staff. I would highly recommend for a birthday or any special occasion.

No allowances for travel disruptions. I had booked a table for 2 in advance. I understood (and agreed to) the t&c’s which is not in dispute. I confirmed the booking the previous day, however my travel plans were disrupted on the day of the booking , and en route from North Wales the train was delayed. This meant that I wouldn’t have made the booking time (5.30pm) , and to arrive later wasn’t possible because we had an event to attend at 8.30pm. I called the restaurant as soon as I realised we wouldn’t make it to Pontcanna at the planned time , and couldn’t make the booked slot. The person who answered the phone showed no understanding, simple told me the t&c’s I had agreed to stated there would be a £20pp charge applied for late cancellations. I tried explaining my train was delayed and I was stranded in Chester, but he wasn’t interested. I have eaten here before and have recommended to others attending nearby Sophia Gardens for events , but never again. The lack of understanding or of taking into account individual circumstances was astounding, and extremely disappointing. There are many other places to eat in and around this area, so next time I won’t be using here or recommending to others again. Awful customer service that cost me £40 for precisely nothing.

We came for my birthday dinner and the service was excellent from the start. I had a happy birthday card with a drawing of the restaurant on and all the team had signed it! Such a nice little touch. They even brought out a little chocolate dessert with a candle in too! So lovely. Food was absolutely delicious but every time we come here we are not disappointed. Consistently great food, the festive set menu was incredible value and the whole experience was lovely. We will for sure be back!

We visited as a group of four for the tasting menu advertised at £85 per person. Quickly found out that one course was not included without a £32 supplement, and you could add e.g Caviar for £15 to the fish course. Total bill including three bottles of wine was £660 / £330 per couple. Was it nice? Yes. Visit again? No For us we have had as good as / better food at other places, frankly for less than £165 per person. £83 service charge was excessive.

Small portions but good food, very attentive service

We had a fantastic experience with you last night for our 6th wedding anniversary. Every member of staff we met were amazing, so pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable. Particular thanks to the lovely gentleman who gave us the wine and other drinks, and the gentleman we met on arrival who also sorted out some vouchers we bought for family. The restaurant itself is just perfect, inside and out, especially with all the Christmas decorations and lights. We have already booked to come back. Our new favourite place ❤️ xx

Every meal we've had has been excellent, whether takeaway, or eating in. Would highly recommend. It is a regular place for us and we'll always keep going back whenever possible

El personal es amable pero profesional, la comida es simplemente excelente, y el ambiente y el ambiente justo como debería ser (y hecho particularmente especial en esta época del año con los restaurantes decoraciones navideñas que son encantadoras) . ¡Si viviéramos más cerca, nos visitarían cada semana! Fuimos por el almuerzo de tres platos un viernes de octubre. Cardiff tiene una escena gastronómica dominada por hamburguesas de cadena y pizzerías, junto a una gama calurosa de italianos familiares y cafeterías. Como tales, las opciones gastronómicas son limitadas. Para encontrarlos es necesario salir del centro y adentrarse en los suburbios. Cantón/Pontcanna es el mejor de ellos con varias opciones estableciéndose en los últimos años, de los cuales Thomas es un buen ejemplo. Este almuerzo fue nuestra segunda visita desde que abrió antes del Covid y no puedo recomendarlo lo suficiente. Después de haber comido en varios restaurantes de una y dos estrellas Michelin a lo largo de los años diría que Thomas es fácilmente digno de una clasificación por estrellas. Todos los platos estaban muy bien diseñados y ejecutados. Con un nuevo menú cada mes no tiene mucho sentido revisar platos específicos, así que simplemente diré que todo lo que tuvimos fue excelente. Lo mismo sucede con el servicio que fue atento y no invasivo. Cuando comparo esto con otras opciones de Fine Dining en Cardiff esto está claramente en la parte superior y lo recomendaría encarecidamente. Sí, es caro para el menú de la noche, pero estos almuerzos establecidos se preparan correctamente y vale la pena probarlos. La comparación local más cercana fue el restaurante James Sommerin ahora cerrado en Penarth Seafront. Lamentablemente, el concepto Home aún no está a la altura de lo que se logró allí, pero al menos tenemos esto entregando la misma calidad y precio.

Food excellent but unfortunately management seems to lack confidence in it's own product; staff wierdly whispering as though we were taking part in religious ceremony, one member of staff actually made a rude comment to another member of staff, assuming we wouldn't understand. Accept that children in a restaurant not necessarily a crowd pleaser but just one child (of two) being slightly eccentric with table arrangements but no shoutiness or bad behaviour; chose lunch because with children but restaurants should bear in mind that they (kids) are potential customers too.

Best restaurant in Cardiff by a county mile. Stunning food, beautifully presented. Expect to pay £125-150pp for a full meal, but it's worth it - high end stuff. Super friendly staff also.

We have been meaning to visit Thomas for a while now and I can safely say they live up to their reputation. The food, cocktails, deserts, and atmosphere was top tier. The Pembrokeshire oysters in particular were incredible. Our server Abby was also very charming to myself and my partner and made sure we had a lovely time.

Been spoiled there last night with the fantastic tasting menu and wine. The food is at top level and service is matching of what magic you would find on your plate. I don't think you would need another 5* reviews, but to anyone who's still hesitating - this is honest top class experience.

Amazing family dinner on a Saturday evening. I emailed them a day before going inquiring about a kids menu and they promptly responded attaching the PDF which had perfect options even for a fussy 5 year old eater. We had whipped roe with extra caviar, Fish of the day, lamb, peanut parfait and chocolate cake for dessert and everything was perfect. Lovely atmosphere (although music could have been a tad quieter at 6pm) - service was beyond excellent. Highly recommended and the highlight of our visit to Cardiff

We were seated upstairs, where all the tables were occupied, while the downstairs area was notably empty, which was disappointing. The menu offered an appealing selection, and each of us chose a different dish. We opted for the cheapest wine on the menu, priced at £32, which was satisfactory but nothing exceptional. After a 20-minute wait, our starters arrived. The soup, priced at £10, was served without bread, and the bowl was only half full. When we requested bread, it came with an additional charge of £4. The other starters depicted in the accompanying photos, also left much to be desired - the smoked haddock £18!!!!! Forty minutes later, our main courses were served. By that time, (60 minutes) we had finished our initial bottle of wine and ordered another. The portion sizes were disappointing: only six roast potatoes for three people and a single serving of cabbage and broccoli to share. The visual representation of the lamb (cost £26) speaks for itself. While the food we had was enjoyable, except for the Yorkshire pudding, which was quite hard, the overall experience felt like a poor value. To make matters worse, the bill included a 12.5% service charge. In comparison, nearby establishments like Heanys offer complimentary bread and butter at the table and provide more generous portions, all while maintaining similar or superior quality. Overall, it was a disappointing experience costing a total of £213.75 - as I said - what a rip off

We were greeted with a very warm welcome by Clara and given a lovely table in the window. Our coats were efficiently taken away too. A velvet side stool was promptly brought for our handbags, which was a lovely touch. The food, as usual, was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the parmesan waffle, which accompanied the celeriac velouté. Stunning! We requested Gin & Tonic’s and were offered a variety, including an orange or lemon infused version, which we happily tried and found both very refreshing. Service throughout was attentive, friendly but not overbearing. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxing. We also liked the trendy wooden panelling and overall decor very much. We had lunch on this occasion but it’s worth noting, it’s also fun to pop in and enjoy a champagne or cocktail and delicious snack at the bar, perched on their comfortable velvet bar stools, whilst the lovely mixologist, James, is able to create any cocktail you fancy. Bliss! I highly recommend you try Thomas.

Exceptional food! Every single thing on every plate was delicious. Can’t wait to go again

I cannot fault the food or the service at Thomas. The staff were friendly, welcoming and pretty efficient. The food was, however, good rather than great. I agree with other reviews regarding the portion sizes. As a small person, weighing just over 48 kg, I would have been happier with double the portion size. The flavours were lovely, not absolutely delicious or in any way moreish. Possibly because we have just returned from 10 days in Belgium and the Netherlands where we spent a lot less for mouth-wateringly delicious food, Thomas does not come up to scratch. I will happily spend money but feel I wasted money on a dinner that did not merit the cost.

Best restaurant in Cardiff right now

Visited with a number of university mates for a reunion. First plus was impeccable service , really hospitable and as it’s a bit out of town slightly less frantic than most Cardiff restaurants . Very good food , I had salmon , beef Wellington And raspberry tartlet . All well cooked and presented , a wide range of starters ,mains and desserts . What I particularly liked was there was no feeling of pressure , we were able to sit and chat long into the night. Very good wines , which we sampled with vigour and throughly ! It was a great evening and the food wine and venue all contributed heavily to that .

We had a truly exceptional meal here last week. Both Abi and Lewis made up feel very welcome and relaxed. The food was truly magnificent. Go for the leek butter alone. We struggled to decide on a top dish, but the top three were the onion tartlet (with the beef), my caramelized white chocolate ice cream, and the fried chicken.

Fabulous evening enjoying Tasting menu with wine pairing. We visited the restaurant on a Thursday evening it is in a residential location with no other bars or restaurants which we could see close at hand. We had a drink in the bar as we were early for our table. It was very busy but relaxed friendly atmosphere. The barman was extremely busy and single handedly managed the vast array or cocktails and drinks. We were taken to our table by Carla who was delightful throughout the service. We opted for the Tasting Menu with Wine pairing. The food was delicious and the wines were perfect for each course. I think the cost was very reasonable for the standard of cuisine and pairing. We have been to 3 Michelin star restaurants which have not been as well presented or the food of the same high standard. It’s a pity we live a 6 hour drive away or this would be a regular haunt for us. If you are in the Cardiff area please visit this establishment you will not be disappointed. Front the front of house to the kitchen staff all are passionate about a great experience. If Billy Joel does another visit then we would be there in a moment. Hoping for another reason to visit Wales.

Amazing tasting menu and they were very hospitable to adapting for lactose intolerance and pregnancy.

Very over priced. They forgot our order so we waited over an hour for our starters. I had the fish with crab ravioli and I experienced sickness over night. I did ring the restaurant the next day but they only said that it had been made fresh that day.

We have been meaning to try this restaurant for some time, however it was disappointing, The food was largely good, particularly the steak, but overall the service was slow, with a slightly disinterested waiter.

Never again... Worst Michelin recommended restaurant I ever visited. We had the tasting menu, for £85 which consisted in 7 dishes, this is if you pay an extra £16 otherwise is a 6 dishes menu. What's the point for this? It can't be in case someone doesn't want to eat too much as the portions are minuscules, Why don't you just increase the price? nonsense. They brought the dishes out and no one explained what the dishes were about(especially the snacks, as you can't check on the menu). The other pointless action they did was that when they brought a dish they just served the sauce to one of us and the rest of the table had to serve the sauce themselves... Luckily this wasn't our first Michelin recommended restaurant we visited as if this would have been the case I'm sure none of us would even consider to visit another Michelin related restaurant. We left the restaurant feeling that we've just been robbed, very disappointing experience. Never again

This was one of the best meals we had on our UK trip! The service was fantastic, and the food was even better! We got the Lamb and Fillet. Both fantastic and surprisingly filling despite how they looked on the plate. We also got their chips, which is apparently one of the signature dishes and MY GOD. Can’t recommend enough. Probably the best chip I’ve ever had. We also got the mac and cheese which was rich and creamy. The dessert didn’t disappoint and we left stuffed and happy, and already planning our trip back to Cardiff just for this!

We received a very warm welcome and shown to an upstairs table. There was a good choice of wine. We had a set lunch menu. Leek Volute with smoked salmon & poached (firm) egg. Delicious. Chicken parfait also delicious. Fish and lamb for main with fantastic delicate hassle back potatoes. Delicious. Banoffee pie… amazing, best ever. Raspberry pannacotta bursting with flavour. Bread & butters very tasty. Excellent service. Portions are definitely on the small side but loved what we ate.

Absolutely wonderful dinner at Thomas. I organised a corporate dinner which is never easy but the restaurant has been brilliant in the run up (Thank you Rosina) and on the night (Thank you Abbie). Having had a few of those, this experience was considerably better than some of the big names in the city centre. Lastly, food was incredible and on another level. Will certainly be back!

Delicious food from start to finish. Friendly service, welcoming, helpful, the team advise on dishes or queries. Great interior & music played. Celebrating birthday the team go the extra mile & gave a birthday card and chocolate delight with a candle at the end of the meal. Highly recommend a visit to Thomas’ !!

Why is it that some restaurants feel that they can get away with serving small potions of food and charge the earth for it. None of our meals filled a quarter of our plates even with spoonfuls of the tiny side dishes we ordered. The dessert was £11 and consisted of a 2" sized tartlet. Yes the food was tasty and presented well but certainly not worth the money. We all left the restaurant hungry and had to pick up something to eat on the way home.

Food was excellent we went for three courses and had a nice wine pairing The staff were friendly but it did feel a little unorganised. We had a booking and were still asked to wait in the little bar area for over 30 minutes and had a long wait for drinks Although the food was very good it was expensive £££ at that price I was kind of expecting more professionalism

If I may just rave about this place. It is spendy but worth it. From the warm sourdough bread and the butter, the delectable and beautifully seasoned beef fillet, chips and, my friend’s favourite, the cheese n Mac. Outstanding. Thanks especially to Kat who served us. Charming, professional, a credit to Thomas.

I had an exceptional meal here on Friday evening. The food & wine were incredible however the service was outstanding. Our server was called Abi and her natural warmth and humour is something I rarely find when I eat out these days. She was knowledgable about the food / wine and the large group of us all left in awe of how well she looked after us. It was the perfect start to our weekend visiting Cardiff. I thoroughly recommend eating at Thomas - the sides are a must (especially their layered chips and spinach!)

The food is wonderful, fabulous flavours great service and excellent presentation. This was my 7 or 8th visit and each time the same terrific food and great service. One criticism this visit was the back ground music was so loud I was unable to make conversation with my guests. I asked twice for the music to be turned down and this was done but it was turned it up again. Very disappointed and would think twice about going again.

It's taken me while to get round to writing this. My wife and I went there for dinner on Valentines' Day, which happens to be my wife's birthday. We had a booking for 1730, as all the later bookings were taken. It was our second visit there. The first time we were very pleased which is why we decided to go there again on my wife's birthday. We went with my wife's sister and her husband who are from out of town. The food was top notch, as expected, and the service was decent. There's a good wine list, if you have deep-enough pockets. Two minor criticisms though; the music was too loud so we had to ask for it to be turned down and I found the seats too low relative to the table (we were in a booth with benches). The experience was marred by one thing though; my brother in law found a wooden splinter in his starter. It was about 2 cm long and looked like part of toothpick only a bit thicker. Fortunately, my brother in law found it before he swallowed, left in on the side of his plate, and very carefully finished his starter which, apparently, was delicious. When the waiter came to clear the plates, we discretely told him of the problem and he looked alarmed. Nobody came back with an explanation or apology and when we later asked about it, it was as if nothing had happened. I can only assume that the establishment did not believe us and thought that we had perhaps planted the item in the food in an attempt to secure some kind of discount. We did not refuse to pay for the starter or even the service charge, as the service was otherwise ok. An acknowledgement of a mistake and an apology would have been sufficient. Their complaints-handling procedure has left a bad impression and is an area for improvement.

It's taken me while to get round to writing this. My wife and I went there for dinner on Valentines' Day, which happens to be my wife's birthday. We had a booking for 1730, as all the later bookings were taken. It was our second visit there. The first time we were very pleased which is why we decided to go there again on my wife's birthday. We went with my wife's sister and her husband who are from out of town. The food was top notch, as expected, and the service was decent. There's a good wine list, if you have deep-enough pockets. Two minor criticisms though; the music was too loud so we had to ask for it to be turned down and I found the seats too low relative to the table (we were in a booth with benches). The experience was marred by one thing though; my brother in law found a wooden splinter in his starter. It was about 2 cm long and looked like part of toothpick only a bit thicker. Fortunately, my brother in law found it before he swallowed, left in on the side of his plate, and very carefully finished his starter which, apparently, was delicious. When the waiter came to clear the plates, we discretely told him of the problem and he looked alarmed. Popped in for food, asked the waiter if we were alright having a table outside because we had a dog, he said yes and then brought out a menu. He told us the menu was 'reduced' because it was Sunday (didn't realise how reduced this would be...). Ordered two soft drinks and when he brought them out we said we were ready to order food. He looked confused and then asked if we had a booking, he then said food was only being served with bookings. Not sure why he never said any of this before sitting us down and giving us a food menu!! He didn't apologise for not explaining this and ran back inside. We then waited 40 minutes to pay for our oh so elaborate cokes, for which we had to force his attention. Oh and to top it all off we later found out dogs are allowed in the bar area, another detail he did not intend to pass on! No apology no level of service at all, did not seem to want to engage or explain anything. Still, best coke I've ever had

Stunning meal and cocktails, fantastic service and the set lunch menu is great value for money. Definitely recommend.

Went for the lunch set menu through their January deal. Unquestionably one of the best meals I’ve tasted, and at the deal of £19pp (!!!) for 4 courses (which I still can’t believe). Would happily pay full price. Often go for a late evening cocktail, great atmosphere in a beautiful setting

Absolutely fantastic fine dining experience, tasting menu was amazing, food was packed with amazing taste, have to say the chefs who come up with these ideas of putting food together to taste the way it does is a work of art. Highly recommended

I called ahead as my partner has a disability and honestly, the care and help offered went beyond any expectation….:thank you ! Once seated we had the Taster menu with the addition of some oysters. Every dish was full of flavour and expertly cooked. A great lunch and we will return

Another wonderful evening at Thomas. We had been a few weeks earlier, and chose this venue to host a business colleague. 2 shared the wellie Wednesday, which we had had a few weeks earlier. The beef on both occasions was cooked to perfection. The service was great. We had the joy of a lovely waitress who was really good, chatty and helpful. She was the young lady who had just graduated from music college.....she is a credit to you all!!! Our guest stated it was one of his top 3 meals ever!!!! We have visited a few times over the years, and it is consistently excellent. The leek butter was delicious, the chips are always next level, and my fish was cooked beautifully. We will definitely return again and again
