10/10 - absolutely brilliant restaurant! Exceptional local food, brilliant wine offering and the staff are some of the best I’ve seen. This is a must visit if you are in Cardiff! Parking can be a bit tricky so leave the car and get the wine paring, you won’t regret it!

One of the best meals we have ever had. The service was brilliant and the food outstanding. We loved the fact that everything was locally sourced and prepared to the best standards. Stand out dishes were the mushroom croquettes, celeriac veloutte and lamb ❤️

We went for the three course set lunch on a Friday in October. Cardiff has a food scene dominated by chain burgers and pizzas joints, alongside a heathy range of family Italians and coffee shops. As such fine dining options are limited. To find them you need to drift out of the centre and into the suburbs. Canton/Pontcanna is the best of these with several options establishing themselves in recent years - of which Thomas' is a prime example. This lunch was our second visit since it opened pre-Covid and I can't recommend it enough. Having eaten in several one and two Michelin Star restaurants over the years I would say Thomas' is easily worthy of a Star rating. All the dishes were extremely well designed and executed. With a new menu each month there is little point reviewing specific dishes so I'll simply say that everything we had was excellent. The same goes for the service which was both attentive and non-invasive. When I compare this to other Fine Dining options in Cardiff this is clearly at the top and I would strongly recommend it. Yes it is expensive for the evening menu, but these set lunches are pitched correctly and well worth trying out. The closest local comparison was the now closed James Sommerin Restaurant on Penarth Seafront. Sadly the Home concept has yet to live up to what was achieved there, but at least we have this delivering the same quality and price point.

Food excellent but unfortunately management seems to lack confidence in it's own product; staff wierdly whispering as though we were taking part in religious ceremony, one member of staff actually made a rude comment to another member of staff, assuming we wouldn't understand. Accept that children in a restaurant not necessarily a crowd pleaser but just one child (of two) being slightly eccentric with table arrangements but no shoutiness or bad behaviour; chose lunch because with children but restaurants should bear in mind that they (kids) are potential customers too.

Amazing family dinner on a Saturday evening. I emailed them a day before going inquiring about a kids menu and they promptly responded attaching the PDF which had perfect options even for a fussy 5 year old eater. We had whipped roe with extra caviar, Fish of the day, lamb, peanut parfait and chocolate cake for dessert and everything was perfect. Lovely atmosphere (although music could have been a tad quieter at 6pm) - service was beyond excellent. Highly recommended and the highlight of our visit to Cardiff

We were seated upstairs, where all the tables were occupied, while the downstairs area was notably empty, which was disappointing. The menu offered an appealing selection, and each of us chose a different dish. We opted for the cheapest wine on the menu, priced at £32, which was satisfactory but nothing exceptional. After a 20-minute wait, our starters arrived. The soup, priced at £10, was served without bread, and the bowl was only half full. When we requested bread, it came with an additional charge of £4. The other starters depicted in the accompanying photos, also left much to be desired - the smoked haddock £18!!!!! Forty minutes later, our main courses were served. By that time, (60 minutes) we had finished our initial bottle of wine and ordered another. The portion sizes were disappointing: only six roast potatoes for three people and a single serving of cabbage and broccoli to share. The visual representation of the lamb (cost £26) speaks for itself. While the food we had was enjoyable, except for the Yorkshire pudding, which was quite hard, the overall experience felt like a poor value. To make matters worse, the bill included a 12.5% service charge. In comparison, nearby establishments like Heanys offer complimentary bread and butter at the table and provide more generous portions, all while maintaining similar or superior quality. Overall, it was a disappointing experience costing a total of £213.75 - as I said - what a rip off

We were greeted with a very warm welcome by Clara and given a lovely table in the window. Our coats were efficiently taken away too. A velvet side stool was promptly brought for our handbags, which was a lovely touch. The food, as usual, was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the parmesan waffle, which accompanied the celeriac velouté. Stunning! We requested Gin & Tonic’s and were offered a variety, including an orange or lemon infused version, which we happily tried and found both very refreshing. Service throughout was attentive, friendly but not overbearing. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxing. We also liked the trendy wooden panelling and overall decor very much. We had lunch on this occasion but it’s worth noting, it’s also fun to pop in and enjoy a champagne or cocktail and delicious snack at the bar, perched on their comfortable velvet bar stools, whilst the lovely mixologist, James, is able to create any cocktail you fancy. Bliss! I highly recommend you try Thomas.

I cannot fault the food or the service at Thomas. The staff were friendly, welcoming and pretty efficient. The food was, however, good rather than great. I agree with other reviews regarding the portion sizes. As a small person, weighing just over 48 kg, I would have been happier with double the portion size. The flavours were lovely, not absolutely delicious or in any way moreish. Possibly because we have just returned from 10 days in Belgium and the Netherlands where we spent a lot less for mouth-wateringly delicious food, Thomas does not come up to scratch. I will happily spend money but feel I wasted money on a dinner that did not merit the cost.

Visited with a number of university mates for a reunion. First plus was impeccable service , really hospitable and as it’s a bit out of town slightly less frantic than most Cardiff restaurants . Very good food , I had salmon , beef Wellington And raspberry tartlet . All well cooked and presented , a wide range of starters ,mains and desserts . What I particularly liked was there was no feeling of pressure , we were able to sit and chat long into the night. Very good wines , which we sampled with vigour and throughly ! It was a great evening and the food wine and venue all contributed heavily to that .

Fabulous evening enjoying Tasting menu with wine pairing. We visited the restaurant on a Thursday evening it is in a residential location with no other bars or restaurants which we could see close at hand. We had a drink in the bar as we were early for our table. It was very busy but relaxed friendly atmosphere. The barman was extremely busy and single handedly managed the vast array or cocktails and drinks. We were taken to our table by Carla who was delightful throughout the service. We opted for the Tasting Menu with Wine pairing. The food was delicious and the wines were perfect for each course. I think the cost was very reasonable for the standard of cuisine and pairing. We have been to 3 Michelin star restaurants which have not been as well presented or the food of the same high standard. It’s a pity we live a 6 hour drive away or this would be a regular haunt for us. If you are in the Cardiff area please visit this establishment you will not be disappointed. Front the front of house to the kitchen staff all are passionate about a great experience. If Billy Joel does another visit then we would be there in a moment. Hoping for another reason to visit Wales.

Never again... Worst Michelin recommended restaurant I ever visited. We had the tasting menu, for £85 which consisted in 7 dishes, this is if you pay an extra £16 otherwise is a 6 dishes menu. What's the point for this? It can't be in case someone doesn't want to eat too much as the portions are minuscules, Why don't you just increase the price? nonsense. They brought the dishes out and no one explained what the dishes were about(especially the snacks, as you can't check on the menu). The other pointless action they did was that when they brought a dish they just served the sauce to one of us and the rest of the table had to serve the sauce themselves... Luckily this wasn't our first Michelin recommended restaurant we visited as if this would have been the case I'm sure none of us would even consider to visit another Michelin related restaurant. We left the restaurant feeling that we've just been robbed, very disappointing experience. Never again

This was one of the best meals we had on our UK trip! The service was fantastic, and the food was even better! We got the Lamb and Fillet. Both fantastic and surprisingly filling despite how they looked on the plate. We also got their chips, which is apparently one of the signature dishes and MY GOD. Can’t recommend enough. Probably the best chip I’ve ever had. We also got the mac and cheese which was rich and creamy. The dessert didn’t disappoint and we left stuffed and happy, and already planning our trip back to Cardiff just for this!

Why is it that some restaurants feel that they can get away with serving small potions of food and charge the earth for it. None of our meals filled a quarter of our plates even with spoonfuls of the tiny side dishes we ordered. The dessert was £11 and consisted of a 2" sized tartlet. Yes the food was tasty and presented well but certainly not worth the money. We all left the restaurant hungry and had to pick up something to eat on the way home.

It's taken me while to get round to writing this. My wife and I went there for dinner on Valentines' Day, which happens to be my wife's birthday. We had a booking for 1730, as all the later bookings were taken. It was our second visit there. The first time we were very pleased which is why we decided to go there again on my wife's birthday. We went with my wife's sister and her husband who are from out of town. The food was top notch, as expected, and the service was decent. There's a good wine list, if you have deep-enough pockets. Two minor criticisms though; the music was too loud so we had to ask for it to be turned down and I found the seats too low relative to the table (we were in a booth with benches). The experience was marred by one thing though; my brother in law found a wooden splinter in his starter. It was about 2 cm long and looked like part of toothpick only a bit thicker. Fortunately, my brother in law found it before he swallowed, left in on the side of his plate, and very carefully finished his starter which, apparently, was delicious. When the waiter came to clear the plates, we discretely told him of the problem and he looked alarmed. He made all the right noises about notifying the kitchen immediately, etc., but strangely, we heard no more about it. Nobody came back with an explanation or apology and when we later asked about it, it was as if nothing had happened. I can only assume that the establishment did not believe us and thought that we had perhaps planted the item in the food in an attempt to secure some kind of discount. We did not refuse to pay for the starter or even the service charge, as the service was otherwise ok. An acknowledgement of a mistake and an apology would have been sufficient. Their complaints-handling procedure has left a bad impression and is an area for improvement.

Popped in for food, asked the waiter if we were alright having a table outside because we had a dog, he said yes and then brought out a menu. He told us the menu was 'reduced' because it was Sunday (didn't realise how reduced this would be...). Ordered two soft drinks and when he brought them out we said we were ready to order food. He looked confused and then asked if we had a booking, he then said food was only being served with bookings. Not sure why he never said any of this before sitting us down and giving us a food menu!! He didn't apologise for not explaining this and ran back inside. We then waited 40 minutes to pay for our oh so elaborate cokes, for which we had to force his attention. Oh and to top it all off we later found out dogs are allowed in the bar area, another detail he did not intend to pass on! No apology no level of service at all, did not seem to want to engage or explain anything. Still, best coke I've ever had

My husband and I went on Sunday to celebrate Mothers’ Day - admittedly without the kids. Thomas was no place to offer a bit of a treat, however. This year, Mothers’ Day clashed with the Six Nations, and the restaurant andbar were filled with supporters having the noisy time of their lives. Filled to the brim with half-cut rugby fans in the bar, we were told to wait for our table. Which we did. For ages. No offer of a drink or a menu to look at. Stuck practically in the middle of a scrum. We waited for about 20-25 minutes for someone to take our drinks order and when the waitress finally turned up, we were told the staff would be prioritising the rugby crowd, as they had a match to get to. No mention of this when it was booked. By now, we’d been waiting nearly an hour, and the volume was increasing as the rugby crowd got more interested in the booze than being respectful of others. Plenty of time to take in the ambience… unfortunately. The colour scheme (green/red/salmon pink) was hideous, the toilets fairly grubby and tatty. I’m all for unpretentious dining, but this was just cheap and unwelcoming. There was terrible glare from the windows as there was no shading, and the noise levels were almost unbearable. I wanted to leave, but my husband had paid a hefty deposit, so we stayed. The food - which should have been amazing was totally ‘meh’. £18 for a small egg-cup sized lemon gin cocktail was frankly taking the piss. The crab cocktail was a sloppy circle of watery sauce with crab bits on what appeared to be uncooked leek and tiny bits of apple, texturally uninviting. I would have asked the waiting staff what was in it, but it was pretty clear we’d been forgotten by this point. The beef that eventually followed was ok. I don’t mind mine pink, but this could have been reanimated by a decent vet. There were only two accompanying veg; swede/carrot and braised red cabbage, both were too sweet. There was also a flavourless tiny spoonful of white stuff I assumed was supposed to contain horseradish, but it was too bland to tell. The roasties had clearly been deep fried, but were nice enough. My poor husband had a sad, meagre bit of pork with a teaspoon of what he assumed to be apple sauce. We’ll never know as we’d ceased to exist at all by this point. The desserts were ok - sticky toffee pudding was microwaved and the chocolate torte was unremarkable. For a place which clearly coasts on its reputation, we had nothing that was in any way outstanding. It was all edible; just very ordinary - dare I say boring? The prices are ridiculous for what we had. Fine dining? Nope. But the crowds of fans quaffing huge quantities of overpriced vin rouge, seemed to enjoy it. We won’t be back.

Thomas is one of the few places in Cardiff to offer close to a fine dining experience. Unpretentious in its style it offers a warm and welcoming service on arrival through to table service. The menu changes regularly depending on the season. We liked the leaflet of the map of their suppliers to show the food’s provenance. The food is a good balance of top quality ingredients, and mouth watering sauces without being too heavy, We enjoyed grilled oysters, lobster tart, turbot with champagne and caviar sauce, beef fillet, passion fruit sorbet, tonka bean custard. There is also a cheese trolley with an interesting cheese menu organised by soft/hard mild/strong. For next time 😊

We were lucky enough to grab a fairly last minute table here on Friday night (booked a week ago). A lovely cosy restaurant in a smart suburb of Cardiff (less than 10 mins in a taxi from Cardiff castle). The restaurant was very busy when we arrived (at the time of our booking) and we were seated at the bar for about 30 mins before our table was ready. It then took almost another 30 minutes for our food order to be taken, so we’d worked up quite an appetite by then - fortunately the drinks kept us going. The waitress did apologise for the delay though which we appreciated. The food was all lovely, delicious and well presented. We chose al la carte and particularly enjoyed the mushroom parfait, oysters, day boat fish (turbot) and carrot side dish. I also thought the wine selection available by the glass was very good. We’d like to return and try out the tasting menu!

Been wanting to try here for a while……it was worth the wait ! We arrived late Wednesday lunch and were pleased we were able to get a table at the end of service. Great lunch, beautifully cooked, presented and served. Better than some of the Michelin restaurants we have tried. We can’t wait to come back to try the taster menu ( ps the truffle mash was exceptional ! )

High quality food and service and an affordable wine list which really complemented the food. Had the fish and chips which are recommended for first timers and it did not disappoint. Really enjoyable.

Excellent set lunch menu. Even better with 50% discount offer and a Christmas gift voucher present! Food and the service was excellent. Only gripe is that no vegetables were included with the mains. A dish of seasonal vegetables included would have been a bonus. However at full price it would have made for a very expensive lunch including a bottle of wine.

Had a great meal here. Visiting my son In Cardiff. The service was excellent & food delicious. We had bread & croquettes “for the table” one of each between the 4 of us - enough for the 4 of us to taste (3 croquettes). I had smoked haddock scotch egg starter - nicely tasting of the smoked haddock. Main course Beef - cooked perfectly for me. & dessert miso caramel sticky toffee pudding- light & tasty. Courses were reasonable size (starters smaller) so not stuffed.

A beautiful meal, in a beautiful restaurant. My girlfriend and I ate here last night before catching a show in the new theatre. We don’t use phones at the table so I will do my best to breakdown the meal without the use of photos. Every course, every side was cooked masterfully. The fried chicken starter was light, crispy, painfully moorish. The Oysters with caviar were in a delicious buttery sauce. We had a chateaubriand as it was on special, seasoned beautifully, paired with a thick and rich beef and red wine gravy, baked carrots which had (I think) pumpkin seeds and purée and a wonderful creamy mash potato. I almost felt like I was eating a take on a Sunday lunch, it was brilliant. I had to try the mac and cheese side which had truffle shavings and mushrooms puree. It was just perfect. Desert. Peanut butter parfait with banana ice cream. All I can say about that is next time my partner can get her own because I will not be sharing it again!! The plates were empty and we were both so happy. We have eaten in a lot of very nice places over the last few months. A few weekends ago we had a similar pre show meal (in terms of size and plates/drinks ordered) in London and the bill was over double what I paid last night. Thomas is priced very very well for food of this quality. A very very special mention in this review was the outstanding cocktails. I wish I had asked the lads name so I could mention him personally. I had 4 beautiful cocktails. The ice cubes are stamped with their logo, a brilliant detail. Stone Sour - a ginger and apricot, fresh fragrant, Very hard to take your time with as it’s that good. Psy-coconut - sweet and tasty. it would make a wonderful desert cocktail as well. Old fashioned - best old fashioned in Cardiff. The final cocktail - sadly I can’t remember the name of it as I asked the mixologist to send out his best, which he delivered himself - Another beautiful whiskey cocktail, a hint of floral. Very strong, sooo tasty - a 10/10 mix and the best cocktail of the night. I challenge anyone to come to this restaurant and leave unhappy. Thank you for a stunning meal, served by lovely staff. We will be back very soon. PS - if you guys see this review, it would be great to know the name of your mixologist so next time I book in I can make sure he’s working! Thanks.

Good set lunch menu, Jan sale made it very good value. Lamb loin, and sticky toffee pick of the courses. Couple of slight disappointments though (potato shards in particular), especially given how much this place is usually bigged up.

Me and my partner had an amazing experience here on Friday evening. We chose to dine from the Al a carte menu, the food was excellent and the restaurant was beautiful. The service was so attentive. We cannot wait to dine again, and experience the best quality food and service in the area again. Huge thank you to Tom, Adam and Carla, and all the team for such an enjoyable time.

This is our second visit and we opted for the four course set lunch menu which is such good value for money for the food we were treated to. Enough choice and we both shared each part of the meal as there was so much to enjoy. The cod and lamb for mains were outstanding and we both loved the sticky toffee dessert. We couldn’t wait to eat to take photos: it’s that good. £38 per person for a four course menu is an absolute steal for the flavours, dishes and service you’re treated to. We will be back again…and again. Cannot fault anything.

Wow. The best restaurant in wales, by far. Absolutely fantastic… we had between us all the dishes and every single one was special. This is a very special place and it’ll be a staple every time I’m in Cardiff. Well done team!

Excellent food and friendly efficient service, but this quality comes at a price. It’s very expensive a La carte for quite small portions. Next time I will do the tasting menu which seems good value in comparison.

Surely the best restaurant in Cardiff? The menu doesn't do the food justice, simple sounding dishes elevated to a completely other level. The mushroom butter with the bread was the best flavoured butter I've had, the mushroom croquettes were delicious, the 'Fish and chips' is probably my favourite fish dish in Cardiff, the 'chips' are extraordinary I still drool over the pictures from my last visit. Every dish we had from the nibbles to dessert just blew us away It's not cheap so definitely more of a place for a special occasion, still worth every penny

Absolutely fantastic! The staff were all very professional and courteous and were happy explaining the menu and the specials to me and my family. The food itself was outstanding and all four of us agreed it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had. When making the reservation it was noted it was one of our birthdays and they had a hand written birthday card and brought out a small treat at the end of the meal making the whole experience all the more special. The whole experience was 10/10 and we’re looking forward to going back to try the tasting menu!

Had high expectations for a lovely evening, food was good, however seated 45 mins late for an 8:15 booking, very noisy dining room with a large work Christmas party booking and slow service let the evening down and nothing like you would expect for a £75 tasting menu. Much better experiences had else where unfortunately

The food was as good as on our previous visit. However, sharing a dining room with a group (celebrating Christmas?) meant it was a bit noisy.

We went here for my birthday and having eaten at many Michelin restaurants over the years this was absolutely superb , shows that stars aren’t necessarily the be all and end all There was no course in the taster menu that had any faults . The cooked oysters ( which were extra ) were amazing , full of flavour and absolutely delicious , the chicken parfait was possibly one of the nicest I’ve eaten , the brill course was again perfect as was the scallop dish , perfectly cooked and the accompaniment was amazing . The lamb was easily one of the best I’ve had , and the “ chips “ unbelievable, could have had a plate of those . Desserts were great, service was excellent , friendly , not over the top . This was a fantastic experience , will definitely return

What an incredible venue! I booked Thomas for my boyfriends birthday, and we opted for the tasting menu - something neither of us have ever done before. Each dish was so well put together and the flavours so delicately complimented each other, it was the best meal either of us have had. We couldn’t have asked for more from our server, Adam. From the start we felt welcomed and really cared for, each course was perfectly explained to us along with why the wine pairing was selected, and the attention to detail was outstanding. Thank you so much for making our night, I would highly recommend this to anybody, and we will definitely be back! Thank you again Adam, you were the icing on the cake for the perfect evening!

Food was very good, excellent value for money, wine was expensive- no option for house wine, felt service could have been better. Emailed the day before in relation to our daughter being 21, wanted a little something with a candle in it, seemed like it was an effort for staff, an inconvenience. Bit disappointing- that said cannot fault the every thing else.
