Heaney’s in Cardiff

Consistently great food. The taster included cheese and onion tart (which tasted much better than it sounds!), Hen of the Wood, hake, fallow deer... all really really good. Thoroughly recommend. They have white lighting though. I would switch to a warmer colour. But apart from that, it really is as good as (or better) than the Michelin star restaurants I've been to.

My friends and I had our first visit this evening . We had a fabulous evening, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was great. Can't wait for our next visit.

Wow what a find! We had full taster menu and wine pairing, the whole experience is exceptional, food outstanding, service 1st class. We will definitely be back. How this place doesn't have a Michelin star is beyond me.

Four of us went for Sunday lunch. Food was lovely except the beef for 2 of us was exceedingly fatty, so half the meat was wasted. Which made the meal quite expensive.

We dined in for the tasting menu. Incredible food, with really well thought out flavours. Service was attentive, friendly and not at all stuffy. Thoroughly reccomend.

A sea trout and baked potato course arrived as a wafer-thin tartlet topped with a froth of, conceivably, spume. It was light and “er, interesting.” Our first course was a bowlful of broth with a side of super-thin slivers of duck – a quackscuttio, if you will. “There’s no right or wrong way to eat this,” said our waiter, which was good to know, especially as we’d not been given any cutlery. Dumping the duck in the broth and downing in one seemed to be the sensible approach, and it was good and meaty. As was its follow-up, the oxtail and anchovy chunklets: all gone ­without hitting the sides.

We recently enjoyed a delightful Sunday lunch at Heanys. For starters, we savoured the fishcake in coconut Thai sauce, bursting with flavour. Moving on to the main course, the succulent and tender lamb dinner had delightful hints of barbecue and garlic. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

Heaneys Restaurant is a Michelin recommended restaurant in Cardiff. There is different menu variations throughout the week, including tasting menu. Went there for Sunday lunch and had the set menu. The interior is modern and simplistic, very nice. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Our waiter was Grant, he was extremely attentive and anticipated the needs of the guests. Absolute star! The food is absolutely amazing. The aged beef was so flavourful and rich, all the trimmings of the Sunday roast were perfect, had a massive Yorkshire pudding. The vegetarian sunflower seed pithivier was perfect too! The desserts were exceptional! The chocolate choux is perfection! Overall, amazing experience! Definitely recommend visiting! Firstly what a warm friendly greeting from the team. We'd rang to say we may be a little late as uber after uber had let us down. We turned up 20min late which we never do i get stressed. However the lady on the phone assured me it would be alright not to worry. Once we arrived we were shown a lovely round table by the window. One of the team brought us water and explained the menu. We went for the short taster with wine for each course. Oh my what a journey! Each dish so different and delicious. Each dish a master piece. Each dish explained to us. One of the best spots in Cardiff without a doubt, amazing flavours and innovative dishes. The taster menu is a must, great experience overall.

Excellent food and service! Particularly liked the marmite butter with bread and the trout.

Lovely restaurant. Great for a special occasion or just a nice meal out. We ate a la carte rather than tasting menu so didn’t get the full experience this time but everything we ordered was delicious. A particular highlight was the warm service too.

Came here for our 1st wedding anniversary. Excellent restaurant with Michelin star quality food and service. We had the long tasting menu and each course was delicious. My wife is lactose intolerant and they accommodated to her needs with no issues. It is pricey but that is to be expected for the quality of food. Courses were weighted towards fish so non fish lovers would struggle with the tasting menu. But having said that I'm not a huge fan of fish but I enjoyed every course. Would definitely return again for a special occasion. I would expect this restaurant to be awarded a Michelin star in the near future.

The baked custard Christmas desert was divine and worth 10/10. The wild sea bass main was also full marks. The trout starter was lacking a little je ne sais quoi so only gets 7/10. But overall it's a great meal out.

The waitress does not know her job. Doesn't understand anything on the menu, gives random and irresponsible suggestion, have to ask kitchen/bar staff for all questions I have. Give wrong information and is impatient throughout. Tricked me into ordering more than I could eat. Food is ok. Good wine.

This was an unforgettable evening with the most delicious tasting menu and superb wine pairings. The food was phenomenal, the front of house staff were great and gave an insightful summary of the wine pairings. The tuna tartar, oysters, and mushrooms were simply outstanding and my firm favourites. Thank you Chef Tommy Heaney and the team - it was incredible!

As an original crowd funder and a regular customer since then, I feel I must comment on the lack of Customer Service. My wife lost her locket and chain to which she had a great sentimental attachment. I phoned the restaurant the morning after our dinner and asked if they had found it, I was told they had not, but would check with the staff and look through their camera footage and get back to me, they did not. I then emailed them with the same request, but again no response. I emailed them a second time, again no response. What an absolute disgrace that they did not have the common decency to reply. Suffice to say, I will not be returning. Philip Denton.

I completely understand why this is one of the top places in Cardiff. Every course was delightful, the staff were lovely and the vibe was good. Our favourite courses were the bbq lamb (that gravy!) and the sea bass was so well seasoned and crispy. The ginger and vanilla parfait were a fab way to end the meal. All flavour combinations were spot on and overall as a menu it was perfectly balanced. I’ll be back, for sure.

We went for a family birthday celebration. Firstly, we tried to submit a pre-order and weren’t actually provided with a correct menu until a day or two before, which made coordinating for 15 people pretty chaotic. Then on arrival, we found our larger group had been split into three separate tables, one big and two small, which made it impossible for us to interact as one family group. The service started well but the waitress looking after us was rude and had an unnecessarily sassy air about her the entire time. It was almost impossible to get the attention of the staff and drinks orders were forgotten more than once. The food was pretty good but far from exceptional. At the end they forgot to bring my coffee - by the time I managed to get the waitress’s attention, everyone else had nearly finished theirs and my uncle had just settled the bill. Rather than just bring my very delayed coffee over with apologies, the waitress arrived with the coffee and a card machine to charge me the extra £2.80!! I refused to pay it and she responded “whatever” before slamming the coffee in front of me and storming off. To add insult to injury, they charged us an extra £40 because my sister in law was ill, so she and my brother weren’t able to make it. I can understand a deposit system for no-shows, but given we still had a 13 people spending a significant sum on a three course meal with drinks and wine, this felt like a really cheap move. Unfortunately the better-than-average food is severely let down by the passive aggressive service and cheap low-blows like charging us because two of our party of 15 couldn’t make it! We definitely won’t be back.

After a lot of recommendations, drove 4 hours to meet up with my son and try this place out for his birthday- food was on point, staff where friendly however, if one orders sides and they are not available - the customer should be informed an offered options, if ones payment method isn't accepted, one shouldn't be told its old fashion, just asked for another, one maybe over 50 but wasn't the oldest customer of the day!

This place is a gastronomical delight. I highly suggest the ‘long’ tasting menu - even though it was 10 courses, they are all lovely and small and manage to offer completely different flavour experiences. Of particular note was the incredible mackerel dish - it was a flavour explosion! Special shout-out to our server, who recommended a Georgian wine that was sublime! He also taught us (very patiently) how to say phrases in Welsh, and really went above and beyond!

Excellent all round. Food was perfectly cooked, great quality and without fault. Service was exceptional, our server, Ben, was informative on the food and attentive. All staff were friendly and welcoming. We eat out often, including Michelin restaurants and can confidently say Heaney’s is among the top restaurants we’ve visited for food, service and atmosphere. Prices are very reasonable. We’ll definitely be back.

Simply brilliant. Great food, excellent service. No complaints!

Although been to Heaney’s many times this was our first for a Sunday lunch: family of 3. As always the service was outstanding and particular attention paid to our 6 year old. The main beef course was superb as were accompanying veggies. Choice of desserts we also very good. Once again Heaney’s proves itself to be at the top end of restaurants in the city.

I was so looking forward to having a great birthday meal with my husband but sadly was very underwhelmed and came away feeling rather cheated. The taster menus (7 or 8 courses, 9 if you pay extra for the oyster) included sourdough bread with butter marmite whip as one course and also a sorbet which was refreshing but not really a course. The ‘mains’ ( duck and fish) were very rich and the fish too salty and they both lacked any carbohydrate (the only carbohydrate throughout the meal was one piece of bread as a starter and the cheese tart). We had the paired wines which was ridiculously expensive for what it was. The portion size for each wine can’t have been much more than 100mls. Also the waiter when describing each wine was constantly putting his thumb over the opening of the bottle. During our meal we had 5 white wines and 1 red, then the last ‘wine’ was not really a wine as it was only 5% alcohol and tasted like a bad Asti Spumante. I had hope for a delicious dessert wine considering the cost of the pairing. We did give some feed back during our meal but it felt like we weren’t taken seriously. Looking back on previous reviews Heaneys seem to have cut back on the more costly ingredients in the tasting menu without reducing the price. Sad as clearly the menu involves a lot of culinary skill.

We had to cancel our table for 4 on the morning of our reservation due to some unforeseen circumstances (2nd July) - we were then charged £80 on the 3rd July - very very disappointed & would like to forewarn everyone of this policy - will definitely remember this unfortunate occurrence- it has left a very sour taste in our mouths - not very customer friendly at all

How can they make things taste so good. The little cheese pie fills your mouth with a flavour explosion. The oysters WOW amazing full of taste and excellent. The quality of the food is outstanding and when you get a glimpse in the kitchen and see how many people are working to make this food it all makes sense. They do offer a number of price options which helps and means we can eat here more often as we don’t need to go all out. The staff are attentive but not too much. Can not wait for our next visit which is booked for next week, the new menu is due out so looking forward to new tastes. Great place to visit.

Holy Moly. Overpriced. Will never return. Firstly, I have no issues with paying well for really good food. It was good food - tasty. But felt completely ripped off. 100pounds [one non alcoholic beer and tap water] for a bowl of olives, one starter, two small plates and a main. One of the small plates which included half a tomato cut into quarters [no exaggeration], thin strip of courgette and a small other bit of fanciness was 12 pounds. Husband had a main of beef which included two strips of beef 7x2x2cm; 20% of which was a thick layer of fat. This was 30pounds. Some notions.

We could only book a table for 5pm, which was a bit early for our liking. However, when we arrived they were able to seat us outside, as it was nice warm evening. The service was excellent. We ordered the long tasting menu with wine pairing, every course was really great, and the wines, whilst not spectacular, complemented nicely. The bill for six people was £1,000, whilst two people did not have the wine pairing. I found this to be rather expensive. We really enjoyed our evening, the food flavours were really great, but did not consider this to be great value, we could have eaten a bit more. I would recommend this culinary experience as a treat, but make sure you are not massively hungry beforehand.

Visited for lunch and we both decided to have the short tasting menu. We have been many times but this choice proved to be very special. Megan who served us was absolutely top drawer. We plan to book Sunday lunch next !

We went for the NYE tasting menu and it didn’t disappoint, delicious food! Yes it isn’t cheap but totally worth it and value for money given how full we were! We don’t eat meat (only fish) and they amended the menu seamlessly. We will be back soon!

The wine was excellent and genuine, but the restaurant committed a serious mistake in not opening it in front of us. 2. We ordered beef but no steak knife was provided to cut the thick slice of meat and we struggled to cut it. 3. The cheese plate was extremely stingy - three tiny pieces and that’s all. It was good though. 4. Service overall was good. Attentive without being intrusive. 5. Lunch for two was £110. These are London prices and Heaneys just doesn’t make the grade.

A lovely place staff and atmosphere .
