The food at this establishment was undeniably delicious, showcasing a delightful range of flavors that truly impressed. However, the service experience fell short due to a noticeable lack of staff. With only one person managing the customer flow, wait times became excessively long, detracting from the overall enjoyment of the meal, which was also quite frustrating. While I understand that managing a busy restaurant can be challenging, it's clear that additional staff would significantly enhance the customer experience. I would highly recommend this place for the food, but I hope they consider expanding their team to better accommodate their patrons in the future.

Had a groupon deal, 2 meals £21.95. Starters both had the butterflied prawns with very spicy chilli sauce which was lovely. I had chicken biriani with curry sauce, very mild flavour but rice was as light as a cloud (couldn't finish it all so they gave me a doggy bag to take home) other meal was chicken jalfrezi (paid extra for chips & poppodoms). Couldn't fault the food, service or atmosphere. Will defo go back

Been there twice now, each time wonderful food. Some food can be spicy but you taste the food, as opposed to be blown away by the spice's. The heat last for a very short time... But all you taste is the food.

Absolutely sublime. We had a range of dishes to share and all of them were packed with layers of flavour and aroma. The gentleman who served us was attentive without hovering and the food arrived extremely quickly. Fairly priced. 10/10 recommend.

Mattancherry Canton is an absolute gem in Cardiff! The restaurant offers an incredible dining experience with authentic South Indian and Keralan cuisine. We went with family and tried chicken lollipops, cheese dosa, porotta beef curry and Alappey fish curry and roasted momos ,and All were awesome And like soda stood out.. If you’re looking for a taste of Kerala in Cardiff, Mattancherry Canton is a must-visit. Highly recommend it to anyone who loves exploring vibrant and rich flavors. Can’t wait to come back!

I recently visited an Indian restaurant that truly impressed me with its seafood offerings. The menu featured a variety of fresh and flavorful dishes, Tawa Fish <3 is a must , each dish is prepared with authentic spices that brought out the best . What really set this place apart was the atmosphere. It felt incredibly homely, with warm lighting and comfortable seating that made you feel right at home. The staff and Manager Mr Ram is were warm and welcoming, friendly and attentive, adding to the welcoming vibe of the restaurant. Overall, if you're a seafood lover looking for a cozy dining experience, this Indian restaurant is definitely worth a visit!One of the Best place to have authentic Indian food with great Taste and service .

Delicious, warm food, served on time even in bad weather.

5 stars isn’t enough for this place, had a wowcher for our meal so was already unbelievable value, the food was incredible each course was the best Indian food I’d ever had, the service was like any other I had received: incredibly friendly and attentive! I had mentioned on the booking that it was my partners birthday and they came out at the end with an entire birthday cake and sparkler that I hadn’t even requested! Couldn’t recommend this lovely little corner of perfection enough!!

We love this place, we get good chicken briyani and Chilli chicken, We love the chicken briyani, we get very good amount of briyani, 2 people can share it, definitely one cannot finish the full box. Recently noticed the Chilli chicken quantity is very less for the price and it's too sweet. Can be improved.

I had a fantastic experience at Mattancherry Canton. The waiter suggested a perfect combination of dishes and took great care in making sure everything was just right. This restaurant exceeded all expectations! The waiter was so friendly and helpful, recommending dishes that turned out to be absolutely perfect. The food was outstanding! We ordered the chicken jhalfrezi curry which was rich, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. Our other dish, chicken biryani, was aromatic and delicious. Everything tasted fresh and authentic. Ordered a takeaway, but food arrived 40 mins late. I called after 25 mins and they said it would be another 5mins when in fact it was 15. No surprise the food was stone cold on arrival. Food was tasty but the starters and potota probably didn’t fare well after having to be microwaved. Shame as I had high expectations.

Disappointed doesn’t sum up my experience unfortunately, after reading all the great reviews I placed an order for delivery, this turned up 50 minutes late, with a missing dish of chicken korma, tried ringing restaurant, call kept getting diverted. Will not order again

Had a very nice meal. Had samosa chat and chicken lollipop for starters, would give that a 5 and a 4 respectively. The Syrian beef curry was a 4.5 and the prawn Manga curry a 5. Kerela parrota was a 4 and so was the masala dosa. Will definitely visit again

1st time here Saturday, Can't wait to return. The tastiest Indian food I have had in a long time. Great choice of the usual authentic dishes like biryiani etc but I loved the Thali and fusion dishes for something a little different. The most lovely, friendly staff make this place a hidden gem. Staff was really helpful and friendly. I gave only 4 stars as there was nothing on the menu for people who do not eat spicy food. I asked for a recommendation of which dish was not spicy and the one chosen still made my eyes water. I normally don't eat spicy food and usually there is at least a couple of dishes in Indian restaurants that I can eat.

This was our 2nd visit and it did not disappoint. Food was delicious. Lots of flavours and portion size is just right. Host offered us to try a different take on the starter looked deli and was very tasty. Not my personal choice but still pretty and tasty. Reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend this little gem in Canton

I don't usually leave reviews but they deserve one! The host is fantastic. He's always bubbly and talkative and kind. He gives recommendations for what would give with each dish and the food is always really good. We've been a couple times, had different dishes, and really enjoyed it. Good vegetarian and gluten free options.

From the moment we walked in we were warmly welcomed and given a tour of the restaurant and the garden dining area. Mattancherry did not disappoint, we opted to share starters so ordered 4 between 4 of us, Lollipop Chicken - wow, idli Chaat simply delicious, we fancied a Bhaji Basket but Ram recommended a Masala Dosa, superb and a Samosa Ragada Chaat. Sharing the starters made the whole experience so much more social, plus we all got to taste such a great variety of food. The flavours made our mouths “zing” we could pick out cardamoms, Cinamon, cumin, coconut, lime, mango a meadley of flavours that really complimented each other. I opted for a Nadan Chicken Curry, I said I really enjoyed spicy flavoursome food, Ram suggested I had ordered the wrong dish and the Syrian Beef Curry would be a better option, it was stunning. We will definitely be making a return visit. A rustic authentic Indian restaurant offering great value for money

Went as we were aiming to go for the Korean restaurant across the road but that was closed for holidays so thought we would give Mattancherry a try. Glad we did. Food was really good, as was the service. Food was so full of flavour and tater really authentic like I’ve had in India. Will certainly go back.

Much better than your standard curry house, with traditional Indian dishes that you don't find in mainstream restaurants. Some amazing flavours and textures in the dishes that we had, I would happily go here again and again! Indeed, now been nearly a dozen times just this year! One of the worst biryanis I’ve ever had as a Mallu. They claimed their biryani is the best, but when I tried it, it was just juicy rice with an overpowering taste of coriander. The prices are much higher than any other restaurant in Cardiff. I don’t understand why they have so many positive reviews on their page. We also had a Kerala parotta and beef, which wasn’t bad. If the food were good, we wouldn’t have an issue with the price, but both are unacceptable. Horrible!!

We looked for a nice and quiet Saturday night dinner on a 2-nights-trip to Cardiff and ended up in the Mattancherry Canton. The food was delicious, quite spicy (- you have to ask the staff about it! They called our meal "mild"), but we loved it. The staff is very friendly, forthcoming and interested in the guests' opinion. The atmosphere is relaxing. We reserved a table for the 2nd night and went there again. I wish we had such a restaurant at home - I'd go there once a week. 😍

What incredible food! The tawa fish in particular stole the show. Amazingly cooked and the perfect blend of spices made it the best dish I tasted here. The dosa was good too. My husband and I enjoyed the food so much that we decided to take take-aways as well. My husband had the non-veg thali which was also delicious. Bonus points for having Kingfisher beer😁. Definitely the best Indian food we have had in the UK hands down. The owner is such a nice man, very polite and courteous. We thoroughly enjoyed the food.

There’s a main dining area, a small corridor for couples dining and a backyard garden. On summers, they also have got outdoor seating. The lighting and furnishing are vibrant. The South Indian music subtly played in the background adds to the mood. This restaurant is located in Cowbridge road, right beside the first bus stop if you’re travelling from Cardiff. It’s easily accessible. Food, drinks, desserts: A huge menu with a wide variety of options to pick from. The quantity is decent and worth the money. The Taunton outlet might have more variety in their menu if you’re looking for Authentic Kerala options, but the menu here is amazing anyway - with the dishes all being exotic and yummy.

The hospitality was outstanding, and the food was excellent. We enjoyed Amritsari fish and chicken biryani. The ambiance and old Malayalam songs provided a wonderful homely feeling.

A hidden gem in Canton, though close to the city centre. The menu is perfectly simple and effective. There's something for everyone. The biriyani, paneer and dosa are particularly good. The owner and staff are sweet and welcoming, and the ambiance is just right. Highly recommend if you're craving the good stuff.

This is my number one restaurant in Cardiff. We go for every significant event, and plenty of insignificant ones too. The food is good value and incredible, plus the staff remember you and look after you. Make sure you book, it gets busy!

The only South Indian about this restaurant is the name Mattancherry.I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone from Kerala. Food is awful I’m afraid! Such a disappointing experience 👎
