I recently stayed at this hotel and was extremely disappointed with the service and accommodations. From the moment we checked in, the problems started. Our bathroom had used towels hanging on the rack, the dustbin hadn’t been cleared, and the toilet was dirty and clearly not cleaned. This made us seriously question the overall cleanliness and hygiene of the entire room. We had booked two double-bed rooms, but upon arrival, we were given one double-bed room and one twin-bed room. The receptionist informed us that there were no other rooms available, which was incredibly frustrating since we had specifically booked and paid for two double beds. The room itself lacked even basic amenities. There wasn’t a single bottle of water provided, and during the night, there were no staff members available to assist us with getting any. To make matters worse, there was no phone in the room to contact hotel staff, leaving us completely stranded. The TV in the room also didn’t work as it had no connection, adding to the long list of issues. Security was another major concern. The door lock from the inside was broken, and in one room, we couldn’t lock the window because it was also broken. This left us feeling very unsafe throughout our stay. To top it all off, we paid £180 in advance for two rooms for just one night, and the payment was non-refundable. For this price, and with no food included, the experience was completely unacceptable. I expected much better for the amount we paid. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and will definitely not be returning.

Stayed in the hotel for a week. The room was spacious and pretty clean. Bed was very comfortable. The staff were very friendly especially Elliot who was absolutely amazing nothing was too much bother and was excellent with my little 2 year old son. The hotel is very reasonably priced though be aware there is a reason you’re paying less than other hotels so adjust your expectations accordingly. We will definitely be staying here again when we visit the area. The only reason I have not given 5 stars is the lack of food, there was no chef soon lunch or evening meals available. Breakfast was offered but we decided to go elsewhere. Apparently due to ownership change there is currently no chef. However this aside it is a wonderful place to stay. Thank you very much .

Unfortunately the owners have not invested in this hotel and it’s tired and run down, however the reception we got from John was first class, he did everything possible to make our stay as comfortable and safe as possible. My wife uses a wheelchair and it’s the only time we have been asked how we would evaluate in the event of an emergency, something that other hotels we have stayed at have never asked. We see that as real attention and care. Hope to see you again soon.

You don't get much for over £100 a night. No soap/shower gel in the bathroom. Flaking paint on the bathroom ceiling. Cobwebs everywhere and bedside tables not cleaned behind. Only 1 pillow each and had to ask 3 times for extra pillows. Not a disabled friendly hotel, no lift, steps everywhere. Unfriendly staff, no uniform. Breakfast was nothing like the pictures dotted around the hotel, very disappointing. If you book in at the Travelodge, it's next to The New Stepney Hungry Horse pub which is also close to Aldi and The York Palace Weatherspoons is also nearby. There have to be a lot better hotels than this one.

However around midnight what sounded like a generator started above us which went on for hours. Overall a clean hotel but desperately in need of refurbishment I visited the male ground floor toilet This was in a right mess ..no lock on the toilet door. Foul language scrawled onto the notice board whuch was damaged . A large soap dispenser with its back off was in the corner ..none of this looked recent.. There was no advice in the room about what time breakfast was served or any sign of a wi fi ..The breakfast was delightful and the staff were most helpful.

All the guests we spoke to said the same thing. Need to emphasis the staff were very helpful and friendly but under so much pressure that it made our stay an extremely bad experience plus we were up for a funeral. What you would expect from a Hotel on a 2 night stay didn't materialise at all and if you are not aware what is happening to your guests then you shouldn't be in this business. From to start to the end of the stay we were extremely disappointed with just about all the following.. Arrived at property to a empty checking in desk, and told to wait for 5 minutes by the barmade who was behind the bar with no customers to serve. Once we were checked in around 10 minutes later. We found the Family room above the Bar. Noisy etc. Room was presentable at 1st we thought But extremely dusty along all shirting boards plenty of cobwebs all over the place even the bathroom had a poor and dirty feeling about it. Moulding around the bath shower hose black and mouldy as well. Curtains in Family room were torn down from the rail and couldn't close properly letting in all the light from outside spotlights. Hence a poor night sleep. And finally the noise outside on them landing around 3 to 4 am. Doors slamming and many keys rattling loudly. On a positive note. The food and service was OK.

My wife and I were shopping in town when we decided to go for lunch. We arrived at 12.40 ordered our meal from the light option menu, we were the only 2 in the restaurant, until a large group of around 18 -20 people arrived at 1 pm. While we were waiting for our meal to arrive, I decided to get another round of drinks, one of the ladies from the group informed the bar staff that they were all ready to eat. The whole table got served as we sat and waited. At 1.30 I decided to walk the kitchen to ask about our meal order on table 8. Tha kitchen was empty the chef was outside having a smoke break or something. I then remembered there was a scuffy man who was wearing worn out jogging bottoms helping with the big group orders. I later realised that was the manager. I will never go back there again unless it's under new management. I understand a big order with the group is alot of money, but haven't we the right for good service.

I stayed here for one night after travelling for work. I'm not one to ask for much. So positives were - the staff were friendly and the room was tidy. But my room was next to a main road with the thinnest of windows. I might aswell have been sat in Lewis Hamiltons pit stop with no ear defenders. The TV was tiny. I think my ipad was the same size. So it wasn't a smart TV. No I player, just terrestrial TV. If that is terrestrial TV, then big ears Lineker and the BBC should've been taken out after the truth about Jimmy Saville. When I say taken out, I don't mean wined and dined, I mean SAS Andy McNabb style slotted. After a 5 hour drive and working you can only imagine my joy to find there's no shower gel. Mint. I'll just wash my nads in good old fashioned h2o. On top of that my room was like a furnace. I have Raynauds and was still stripping off, so people have the pleasure of my sweaty nutt sack next to the sheets. I had no breakfast so couldn't comment. I was up early and gone. Maybe the quicker I get home or to a service station I might get some sleep. I honestly think this is probably a decent restaurant and bar. But not a hotel. Basil Fawlty would have his work cut out. It needs a complete revamp. Overall, it's a no from me.

We had a really disappointing experience on Christmas day of all days. See previous reviewer's very accurate description of the day's events. It all started well for our 1pm sitting, the room looked fairly nicely set up (it was not too busy at this point). We waited a long time for our starters and once they arrived they were really tasty. However unfortunately it all went downhill after this. Waiting times for meals for everyone were totally unacceptable - we did not receive our main meals until after 3.30. There were many elderly people and children in the room, for whom waiting that long is just not ok. Service was poor- significantly understaffed- we felt sorry for the 3 waiters rushing around doing their best. Manager was barely visible other than pointing to where people needed to be seated. I think it would have helped alleviate some of the catastrophe if he'd have been more visible, offering apologies and eg a complimentary snack or drink for everyone. The occasional food that came out from the kitchen nowhere near matched the huge numbers of people waiting for meals. When the food eventually arrived the portions of meat and roasties etc was really measly and disappointing however these tasted quite nice. There were large portions of vegetables served on addition however the Brussel sprouts and broccoli were absolutely awful- horrendously overcooked the worst I've ever come across, and we couldn't face eating them. We decided to leave before we got our puddings as we couldn't face sitting at the table any longer just waiting, also now seeing that the quality of the food was just not waiting for. By this point the dining room was full with so many people waiting, the atmosphere had changed from being fairly pleasant to noisy and chaotic- we couldn't wait to get out of there. Really disappointed. We have been advised we can seek a refund for deserts from the manager. We are sorry to post this review & will not be returning sadly.

22 of us booked for a Christmas Dinner. We booked a month in advance and pre paid and booked for the 2 pm slot and didn't managed to get seated until 2:45pm. Started then started to come out at 4:15 which is 2 hours after our original booking slot and mains arrived at 5:20. The veg didn't arrive until another half hour after that which meant all the meat and extras were cold before we could even add the veg to make it a proper dinner. I asked for over 2 hours for the babies mash to be brought out and kept getting promised every 15 minutes so I was getting frustrated You speak to the staff for help and they give you empty promises. They charged £26 for a children's meal that basically consisted of mainly just chips. We were not the only group that were complaining and we seen a few people leave earlier than they originally planned. We were promised a refund but still to date hasn't received one,. A very unhappy experience for everyone and their families on an important day such as Christmas Day. We will not be going here again and will be recording everyone to stay away. Ruined Christmas Day! 1hr 45 mins waiting and no food so we went home... We booked Christmas dinner out for the first time, but unfortunately had a pretty terrible experience. Firstly there was no-one at the entrance to welcome or seat you, and after wondering around and going to the bar we were told to wait at the door to the function room to be seated. Opposite the entrance, there was a storage room door wide open with tables and cloths all over the floor in a right mess which pretty much set the tone of the experience. We were then brought into the rather brightly lit room and seated on our table next to the bar, my wife's seat was on the hard wood floor of the bar area so ended up with people queuing around her most of the time we were there. The room layout and tables used were shocking. There were Christmas crackers but that's about it, no glasses of bubbly on arrival and minimal decorations. Just white table cloths in a brightly lit room that felt like a school canteen with the basics on the table along with an A4 sheet of paper with our surname printed on it. I can honestly say I've experienced a more Christmassy setup and atmosphere in a tent in Afghanistan on Christmas day many years ago. There was no table service or drinks orders taken, we ventured to the bar and ordered our own which I don't mind, just expected more. We were booked in for 14:30 but arrived and seated at 14:20. There were 2 waiters who appeared from the kitchen door now and again with some food and the manager frantically pointing at tables to direct them to, but in all there was minimal food on tables and a lot of people sitting around waiting to be fed. By 15:15 my wife joined the queue of complaining people at the kitchen door asking when we should expect our starters, only to be told it's on its way. Roll on another 20 to 30 mins and it was my turn to enquire, only to be greeted with a manager who was surprised to hear we hadn't had starters yet. I asked honestly what the wait would be for main course once starters were plated, and was told probably about half an hour or so (which in reality would have been another long wait which isn't acceptable for a family of 4 including a young child). Needless to say we weren't prepared to sit there any longer and waste our entire Christmas day, so I asked for a refund and we put our coats back on and left. I honestly think they were probably releived to have 1 less table to serve. Upon leaving we spoke to a few other guests who also had a similar experience, with one saying we didn't miss anything as the quality of food was apparently terrible. I spoke to the manager again today and he said the refunds should be actioned and will take about 5 working days, he also said 5 staff called in sick which I'm not sure is true or not. But even with that in mind, there was no apology for ruining our Christmas day meal. Luckily we had the ability to cook a meal at home, but this is the first time my wife and kids have not had a Christmas dinner on Christmas day although we paid £200+ for this disappointing experience. The Thomas Arms has really gone downhill and we won't be returning until they have resolved their current lack of quality and professionalism and returned to a customer 1st mindset.

Booked for Xmas dinner 2023. We booked for the 12pm sitting. All well on arrival, only 4 tables were occupied when we arrived. The place appeared more run down than when we last visited 5 years ago. We didnt get served our starters until 45 minutes after we arrived. The waiters were short staffed and were inexperienced. The mains were then served about 20 mins after starters. Then the second sitting came at 2pm and it turned into organised chaos. Our plates weren't collected from our table and had to clear them ourselves. We were due to leave by 2pm but no signs of dessert being served. We waited nearly an hour, I asked the manager for a refund for dessert, he said it was on it's way, which did come out 10 mins later. People were complaining as the ones who turned up at 2pm hadnt had their starter by 3pm. The manager wasnt dressed very tidily, wearing jeans, you'd think he would have made an effort on Christmas day. The store room door in the corridor was left open showing a messy room full of boxes. This is not the Thomas Arms I'm used to and has gone down hill since being taken over by Marstons. Such a shame for a lovely hotel. On a positive, the food was lovely but let down by the service.

Two night weekend stay. Beautiful two hundred year old building, set in a great location, with parking, within walkable distance of the town centre. We stayed in this hotel to visit friends, use a local restaurant, visit the cinema with possibility of experiencing some paranormal activity within the hotel, as seen online. A welcoming reception, staff were attentive, ensured we had registered our car in the car park properly, explained the hotel rules of entry late at night and given directions to our room. The room for three people was clean, spacious and well set out and had the required towels, shower accessories, storage space and tea, coffee and biscuits. We ate in the hotel that evening, having meals from the restaurant extensive menu and each of us enjoyed a mix of starters and burger meals. The bar was clean, well stocked, reasonably priced and the young bar man was very pleasant. The staff at the hotel, worked hard, was very accomodating and very friendly. We enjoyed the bar entertainment of background tv, payable pool table and darts and stayed until close. The following morning we, like the other guests, took advantage of the full english breakfasts served with hot drinks, which we could not fault. Service with a smile and asked how our evening was and about out plans for the day. That evening we had an evening in town, returning to walk through a fuller bar, with a great atmosphere to our rooms. Bar activity and noise was noted, but wasn't too disturbing and to be expected, staying above a pub. The following morning we went down to breakfast. Everywhere was clean, no sign of the busy night before. We sat in the restaurant area, where a number of guests were dining already, some even reported of some unusual activity through the night, of which we were jealous not to have witnessed. We checked out, returned the keys and said our goodbyes. The staff here, have had a very busy season, are looking forward to some quieter times, are very hard working and very friendly. Please note, the hotel is older, is not a modern hotel and is well worn around the edges. Its part of the charm of the building and we liked about the property. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, would recommend and will be staying again, when returning to the area.

My extended family have been using this venue for 3 generations, more than 50 years in my memory. I was here and stayed and had breakfast and it was one of the worst experiences I have had in respect of quality and service . Seeing as there was 4 of us and we had 3 rooms dinner and breakfast and all of us said we would never come back that is very poor and felt like the hotel is being run by a bunch of cowboys with staff that seemed like they couldn't give a sh.t. .

It was OK, everyone was polite and nice. It just seemed a little short staffed and chaotic at times. Room was huge, bed was comfy. Bonus of 2 chairs in the room.

A group of young adults meet at this hotel on a weekly basis to eat and socialise. This group were changing venues every week until they met at the Thomas Arms for the first time. Since then, they have returned to the Thomas Arms every week due to the welcome they had received. Jon and Jamie are very welcoming and so accommodating being totally aware of their customers needs and have gone above and beyond in personally getting to know each individual in the group and their individual needs. This group are certainly at the heart of everything Jon and Jamie do. Nothing is too much trouble. On top of the excellent customer service received, the food is excellent and each meal is served to the individuals taste. Jon and Jamie have truly become friends of the group and along with the staff are a credit to the hospitality sector.

I had the pleasure of having my wedding reception at the Thomas Arms this weekend. Jon and Jamie went above and beyond to make the day incredible, from calming me down on the morning, to planning out part by part the way the afternoon would play and then keeping me and my husband stress free. There was nothing too much trouble and they kept our guests happy and entertained. There'll never be enough good words to thank them alone, and all of guests have commented on what a wonderful atmosphere it was and how the food was outstanding! Thank you once again for making the day perfect!

We have stayed here twice before overnight and was fantastic but this time we could not believe how bad this place had become . Pub and hotel both filthy . Room dirty and musty smell . No toilet rolls in our room , room very hot and stuffy . Used to be fans in rooms but now gone . Guy who checked us in had no idea of hygiene as had a runny nose and kept wiping it away with his hand and wiping on his work wear . He was also serving drinks and doing this . No one was clearing glasses and all tables full of glasses , told there was no spare key for us to access hotel rooms after 11pm so we had to be back to our room before then . This used to be a beautiful pub and hotel now an absolute disgusting place . Will be staying elsewhere from now on

This is somehow a 3-star hotel. 1. Double bed was just twins pushed together with a double sheet over it. 2. Cobwebs all near the curtains by the window. 3. No fan so it was boiling. 4. TV was a tiny 30" bog standard telly with no smart features. 5. Situated right next to the main road so it was loud as hell and we woke up several times. 6. No walk in shower which is a standard for 90% of hotels. 7. No fridge? Really? 8. Murky water from the taps is a giant red flag. Overall, if the travellodge which is a one star hotel can give us the same service for £25, why did we get charged £60 for a single night?

me and a few friends decided to go for a few drinks and play some pool , as the first half of the group arrived they were stood on the bar for 10 mins without see any memebers of staff , he then decided to go look for staff so he could get servered he entered the funtion room to see all the staff sat around a table drinking (alcohol) and had to ask to get served , we eventually got sereved and started to play some pool we had to play our own music due to there being none on , id honestly say this bar has the worst atmosphere ive ever experienced , later on we ordered a bowl of chips when served they were tossed accross the table without the person serving them saying a word and walking off 0 customer service NO ask if we wanted sauce or salt the waiter didnt say anything at all. there was chrildren running in and out of behind the bar. after they was done serving our food and drinks the proceeded to sit on another table and continue drinking , though out my whole experience here they was only 2 staff members actually working which was jamie and a youger blonde girl behind the bar , while the rest sat around a table drinking , (walking behind the bar to get the own drinks, when obviously if you consumed alcohol you SHOULD NOT be behind the bar) over all the customer service is absolutely horrific , the atmostphere , there wasnt one truly the worst atmostphere of a pub / restraunt you could imagine. the fact there was chrildren running in and out of the area behind the bar weather they are staff chrildren or not is disgusting. i will NEVER attend here or recommend this place ever again.

Worst place ever. What as meant to be a nice mothers day meal such a disaster. Booked a table for 1pm. Ok there was a large table of us but you'd think there'd be plenty of staff knowing they had a big number of customers in for mothers day. Ordered food at 1.30 food got served at 3 o clock. No apology nothing not even a courtesy check. Ordered dessert at 25 past three to wait yet again another half an hour. Will not be returning. Ruined mothers day!

This was a great spot for lunch! We stopped off on spec and I was pleased to see vegan options. I had the vegan burger which was lovely. My parents had the chicken burger and the gammon, and they were equally pleased with the food, the portions and the service. I also had a vegan crumble tart with custard which was delicious! Overall a very pleasant experience, although prices were a little on the high side.

Brilliant seafood starters. Cosy atmosphere and great service. Varied menu encompassing Welsh specialities and tasty pub grub, nice cold beer and soft drinks. Definitely recommend the chips as they are very crispy. Mushy peas with a twist. We enjoyed our meal in the secluded den watched over by a giant grizzly bear. A must visit if you are in the area!

Stopped off here for lunch with my elderly mum and was pleasantly surprised. Whilst the seating was adequate the staff were very friendly and cleared vacated tables promptly. The drinks and food menu’s had plenty of choice and I decided to have the jacket potato with chicken curry which came with a salad garnish. The portion was great and the chicken curry was delicious…mum had a toasted sandwich which came with a small salad, coleslaw and some crisps. Both very reasonably priced and would not hesitate to recommend if you are looking for a lunch time bite. We will return.

Nice and clean coffee show with fresh looking food. However, the 2 cappuccinos we ordered were not quite hot enough for our liking. The staff were friendly enough considering the whole store was freezing cold! We noticed that all the staff (not that there were that many of them there) had coats on, which must be very unpleasant having to work under those conditions. The store has definitely deteriorated since my last visit, which is such a shame, but it certainly wasn’t a nice experience walking around, in the cold, dodging the strategically placed buckets catching the dripping water. C’mon Leekes….you are better than this!!
