Easter weekend lunch. Our family of 7 arrived, the restaurant wasn't busy at all, I waited at the bar to be seated while 3 staff members were chatting and one was getting a coke for customers, 7 minutes later I was still waiting and hadn't been acknowledged despite being the only person standing at the bar. We were shown to our table and waited, and waited again eventually the waitress came to take our order. Food arrived quite quickly but those with beef had just one slice as did the pork dinner, the roast potatoes were hard and pretty cold and the yourkshire puddings had been in the kitchen a good while prior to being served too. Not good. It was an eternity after we had finished before anyone came over to clear plates and then only half were cleared and we were left again, not offered dessert or more to drink.... In the end I took the test of the plates to the bar and asked for dessert menu, they weren't busy there, chatting, I went to the loo and could hear a lot of noise, shouting, laughing from the kitchen.... Dessert took 25 mins to come and restaurant was now empty. Dessert was disappointing, synthetic cheesecake 😕. We left unhappy and after years of going here, not again.

The food was excellent. I had fish pie with 3 green vegetables and new boiled potatoes. I t was the best fish pie I have ever eaten. I thanked the chef his name was Mathew. I have been several times equally tge food was excellent each time. The lunch was good value. The staff without exception were cheerful and very helpful. I would without doubt recommend the restaurant.

This place is hit and miss. It has been good over the years but unfortunately seems to have gone downhill with a very basic menu. The fish and chips were overcooked, lacked seasoning and possibly re-cooked. Nice place for a drink only until they get a better chef.

A pub that supports illegal activities and foxes being torn to shreds in the countryside whilst sick individuals on horseback smile and laugh. I would rather set money on fire than give it to a business who have no morals or ethics at all. If you eat or stay here you really need to go and search for your moral compass in the Welsh hills.

the "steak burgers" were thin and cheap, you'd get a better burger form a burger van for half the price. Considering the place was almost empty, and there were at least 3 staff, the service was appalling. Staff more interested in looking at their phones than serving customers.

Are here as the only place open on a Saturday night and it was a bit of a let down. Not awful but not great! Staff ladies were friendly and nice but man working was a bit rude. The lamb was delicious, creamy mash and yummy gravy. The chicken wings were bad, not crispy and didn’t taste like buffalo at all. My friend enjoyed her beef burger (very big!) Would try this place again as feel we were maybe just unlucky!

Visited mid week in September. The soup of the day was excellent, pea with cream, and well worth £5.45. My main course was the sirloin steak ciabatta (steak sandwich) with sweet potato fries and a little salad. This was one of the specials according to the receipt, which was washed down with a glass of Rioja wine. Both soup and the steak ciabatta were excellent and recommended.

Very well located in the historic town centre, near to visitor information and the castle ruins. We stayed B&B at the hotel which was clean and comfortable. Friendly staff, apart from one chap who seemed a bit miserable and not particularly forthcoming or welcoming. The food was particularly good both evening and morning. There was no breakfast menu but you could order what you wanted, although there was no smoked salmon available.

On a Sunday trip to Llandovery, we wanted lunch and we came to The Castle Hotel, we had not booked but they had a table in the bar, so we went in and settled down. The menu was varied, the food was excellent, I had the chicken my friend had the beef and both were brilliant, and the portion was fabulous as were all the veg and trimmings. Great value for money, super friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. The chocolate brownie was also amazing as was the sticky toffee pudding also according to my friend. Highly recommend this venue for Sunday lunch and will be going back.

We chose to celebrate my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday at The Castle Hotel in Llandovery this evening - never having visited before, it was a bit of a gamble. However the food, service and atmosphere was second to none and we can’t wait to return! We give it a solid 5/5… The dining room is beautiful, very Welsh and the tables spaced well apart. The service was impeccable from both bar staff and waitresses. They were very friendly and nothing was too much bother. They explained the menu items and our numerous questions with clarity and in food spirit. They were genuinely lovely. The food was ‘lush’! We went three course and no one was disappointed, clear plates from all, even the cheeseboard was divine! Like I said we will be back very soon.

THE CHICKEN DISH HAD NO CHEESE OR BARBECUE SAUCE AND WAS TOUGH, ON ASKING FOR THE BARBECUE SAUCE WE WERE GIVEN A BOTTLE OF BROWN SAUCE. We ate at the Castle today, for the first time since the change of ownership/management. We were delighted with the meal! My fish and chips were excellent in every way, along with the accompanying coleslaw. My friend asked for a slightly larger sized pate starter,as a main course. It was also delicious, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. The beer and wine were also of an excellent standard, and were served perfectly. The interior is freshly decorated and makes for a pleasant and welcoming environment, and the staff were highly professional and courteous,as always. We live fairly locally, and have been customers of the Castle hotel for many years and have enjoyed many meals here. I am pleased to say that we will be continuing to do so! Highly recommended.

No bottles of water in the room, no glasses for you to wash your mouth out after brushing your teeth, for £95 you expect this. The evening meal was just OK, and I mean just ok. The breakfast was vile, all tasted like it was precooked in the same dirty fat then reheated... All had the same rubbery discusting taste, except for the egg, which was cooked good. Very very disappointed. The only pros were the shower was powerful, the bed was comfortable and the staff was friendly. Will never return!!!

Stayed for a week. Wonderful friendly hard working staff, traditional pub with a good mix of locals and visitors, tiny little village. Beer was great, breakfast was lovely, super dog friendly accommodation. Evening meals were pretty solid 7/10 meals. We had two rooms though and they must have been overflow rooms due to the hotel being very busy. Some of the rooms looked ok as we walked past but our rooms were very very old and desperately in need of a good paint, new furniture and a good deep carpet clean. We also heard a conversation at breakfast where one or two of the rooms were right on top of the main road passing through the village and the guests woke up when the first HGVs started going through the village about 5am. Not sure how true that is but worth bearing in mind. Shame, would have given 4 stars but seemed to get very unlucky with the rooms. Staff were wonderful.

Booked an evening meal here after having been impressed before. But on this occasion I’m afraid it wasn’t to be. We were sat in the bar where we didn’t want to be. Social distancing/mask protection not adhered to here. There are arrows but too where? Had issues finding food for lactose intolerant lady. Nothing on the menu at all so we took stuff off and added from other plates! We also had two steaks for £22 each if I remember correctly. The steaks were extremely thin and it seemed it was one steak cut in two! Chips were cold plates were cold no vegetables or salad. Desert was a fruit pie with a minimal amount of custard. Looked like it had been measured in a teaspoon! Not a great choice. I’ve had really good food here before so I just don’t understand why they’ve gone down this route. Very disappointing as we were looking forward to it and I’ve purchased from the meat supplier and my steaks were not like this. Certainly paid the price for our decision to eat here.

After an absolute nightmare of a camping trip during Storm Francis, we packed down our broken tent and drenched belongings and decided to not let this ruin our holiday and luckily found The Castle Hotel had availability for the next 2 nights. Although the hotel is located on a fairly busy road, it didn’t take away from the peacefulness of the hotel. We booked the suite which was very interesting! We could not understand why there was no bathroom and assumed there was a shared one. However after some poking around, we managed to move the mirror which turned out to be a door!! This lead into a dressing room area with tea and coffee and also a large bathroom with both shower and bathtub. The staff are very hard working and we’re very accommodating to our requests. We woke up one morning not realising that we had missed breakfast, however they kindly made us some regardless which was a lovely gesture. The food in general was good not excellent but was satisfactory for what we needed. Overall a lovely place and great staff!! Would recommend this place is you’re looking for a quirky little pub stay. Note: we had our dog with us who also felt at ease staying in the comfy room and in the restaurant.

Summary : Second year stay worse than first year, otherwise nothing has changed. Same worn, old and tatty, tasteless interiour and mostly irritating beginners' pieces of art on the walls. Atrocious service, poor management but friendly and apologetic.. Best: The bed was comfy, room was tidy. Room no soap, no info, no wifi password in room. COVID regs? Don't think so. But generously offering one clothes hanger! Second day room was not made up. Water takes minute to get warm. Extractor doesn't work and is also full of fungus.Food: Can't even manage cooked breakfast. Took nearly an hour to arrive and incomplete. Cooked BF from tins. Dinner: Little choice, either Burger or Steak, Curry not available. Day 1: Chewy terrible quality steak then day 2 cremated steak, parts of dish missing. Dessert: Ice cream missing. Food takes ages to arrive. Day 2 nobody takes orders. Then after pointing this out takes another 20 minutes for a guy to come and take the order. Sort of "it's not my job to take your order" One waiter with terrible body odour. Next morning he smells the same. Obviously no idea of hygiene. Kitchen extractor fan apparently not working hence why not open the kitchen door to the guest's dining room so that is smoke filled from cremated steaks. Nobody seems to notice or bother. Amazing what tghe guest are willing to take. Never again but there is probably nothing else of acceptable quality in this region. Typical

Friendly staff were able to accommodate us without a booking on a Saturday night for dinner. We hadnt eaten since breakfast, and after a 3 hour car journey and 15,000 steps we needed a juicy steak and carbs. Unfortunately the meals appeared too quickly and whilst cooked to our request of medium rare, the meat had been burnt on the outside and was chewy with no flavour. There was a good atmosphere inside the pub but I would only return for drinks as I think the steaks at £18/£22 were overpriced for the quality of meat and cooking

A very central location and a short walk from our Airbnb. They were carrying out social distancing but non of the staff wore any ppe masks which was a surprise. The menu offered was not the same as the one on their website. We chose to come here because of the gluten free and veggie options but found this temporary menu much more limited. Our very young and possibly inexperienced waiter, had no idea which courses were gf and just kept trying to guess rather than just go and ask the kitchen. Ordering a Pimms and being told they had none whilst I saw two bottles of it behind the bar - then being told they didn't have any strawberries or cucumber (in summer?).My youngest ordered handmade tortillas and enjoyed them but commented that the salsa and guac lacked any flavour. They found a large lump of melted cheese underneath their last couple of tortillas. They also found a bug in their coke and the waiter took it away, no problem but took far too long returning a fresh glass of coke. My other daughter had the Ceasar salad and it was just ok and "nothing special". It had very little dressing and no parmasan shavings. My husband ordered the gammon and it came with potato wedges not thick cut chips as advertised. It didn't have any minty peas either and the plate just looked brown. He wasn't offered a steakknife for his gammon. I chose to have the veggie Beyond Burger - it was very nice, I've bought them before from my local supermarket so I knew what to expect. It is the first time I have ever ordered a burger from a restaurant and not had fries & salad as standard. £9 for just a veggie burger and nothing else was a little steep for my tastes. The service was perfectly pleasant but chaotic - our main waiter didn't appear to know the menu well enough and kept saying he'd be back in 2 minutes but never returned. After waiting to find out if any of the desserts were gf we gave up, paid and left. Disappointing experience after reading all the positive reviews.

Went for dinner with a friend who lives locally after he recommended the Castle. We had a couple of pints of good Welsh real ale and a very nice meal.Thai fish cakes to start for me - piping hot and really tasty with a nice salad garnish. My mate had leek and potato soup which he said was very good too.My main was coated chicken with sweet potato fries, garnish and coleslaw and it was superb - really enjoyed it. Other main was a sirloin steak with all the trimmings and that was apparently very good too.Price for our food and drinks was quite reasonable and I would make a point of eating here again when next in town.Review would have been 5 stars if there had been a little more atmosphere in the place, it was very quiet with hardly anyone in the place when we went but still very enjoyable.

Conveniently placed just outside of the main village carpark and recommended by another pub that had stopped lunchtime food service, we were pleased with our food. A slightly upmarket menu meaning slightly upmarket prices especially if like us it was a pop somewhere for lunch visit rather than a going out for a meal visit. The pub itself is very traditional, with attentive bar staff and waiters. Food came quickly and piping hot and as very tasty. Recommended are the Crispy chicken dish and the Welsh Faggotts with crushed peas. Didn’t think much of the Calamari rings, but then they are so easy to get wrong! All said, no complaints at all, a little on the expensive side and not much of an atmosphere (Mid Wales in November so wasn’t expecting a crowd) but all left happy and full.

We stopped here for Saturday lunch and couldn't be happier with our experience. Staff were very welcoming and service was very efficient. There was a good selection of real ales and good variety of lunch dishes, from snacks to full hot meal.

We booked a table which was a good idea as the restaurant was quite busy after we arrived. Very friendly and quick service. Meals were all very good and prices were moderate. Would recommend.

Had a nice meal here with family members, atmosphere was ok, service was fine, food a tad over priced. Would definitely visit again if I was in Llandovery but maybe just for a pint.

We have eaten here a few times before while we’re on the ‘antique run’ Good friendly service, very quiet today. Well kept beers, extensive menu and a daily special board. The Mushroom and steak pie was particular good. Highly recommended. We’ll be back

I visit the Castle Hotel regularly and am always greeted warmly and feel most welcome. I would like to draw your attention to an exceptional Member of your team namely Susan. She is most professional and cannot do enough to please. She is an asset to this establishment. . Please make her aware of this compliment as she goes over and above her duties which I am sure makes for return visits to the Castle Hotel a pleasure at all times when she is on duty there.

2 hungry adults and 2 hopeful dogs stopped for Sunday Lunch which did not disappoint. Honestly,no visit to Llandovery would be the same without a visit to the castle hotel. The specials menu is to die for and changes frequently. The staff are extremely friendly to dogs and humans.

Atmosphere was OK. Four of us ordered different meals from the menu. Fish and chips arrived with about five chips with the battered fish place on top. Chicken dish was tasteless again served with five chips. We didn’t return the following evening.

I decided not to have a starter, which was thankfully a good decision, as the burger I ordered was extremely filling and delicious. I changed the fried for sweet potato fries and followed up by sharing a dessert of sticky toffee pudding which had plenty of sauce.

Stayed Tuesday night, signed in & shown to our room No 108 by a delightful bespectacled lady. The room was huge & lovely, all you wanted was there including a jar of sweets, The en suite was very good although the blind was broken and hard to adjust. One thing that did worry me about the room as that it was on the narrowest part of the main road, I had no worries as the traffic in the morning was minimal & I got a great nights sleep on the comfy bed.

Service not really great in this area but more attention here. Unfortunately the food was only average with a veggie curry more like a soup. Flat white was good, as local area seems to mix up with latte.

Visited for dinner whilst holidaying in Carmarthenshire. Restaurant is in a traditional hotel setting very much in keeping with an older traditional hotel however food and service was great. The whole family enjoyed the meal and the menu offered a range of options.

Stay in the famous ‘Nelson ‘ suite and use this as an ideal base to explore the fantastic local scenery which is a walkers and cyclists paradise. Find out about the famous Welsh legends associated with this gem of a market town. On Wednesday evenings the harmonising sounds of the local male voice choir can be heard in the background whilst enjoying a sumptuous restaurant meal or perhaps sampling some real ale at the bar before chilling, relaxing in the outstanding oak beamed lounge.

Having had a good beef sandwich with beef dripping chips earlier in the week we tried dinner on a Monday night. The place was packed and the Staff were clearly a bit overstretched. However, they found us a table and the dogs fitted under it neatly. My friend had a pint of the “Rev. James” and I ordered a large bottle of sparkling water having been given the option by the waiter of small or large, but as it turned out they only had small bottles. My starter was a small Greek feta cheese salad. It was a bit disappointing, just cheese, tomatoes, olives, garlic in oil cucumber and slices of red pepper. No lettuce, no pita bread. I asked for some bread. The waiter looked puzzled and queried my request, as bread appeared to only be served with a soup order! So, that was what the side plates and butter knife were for! Bread eventually came. It was a lovely fresh French stick sliced up. My grilled mackerel was done nicely with samphire, roasted tomatoes and aubergines. But, where were the new potatoes? Impossible to get a waiter to ask, and the thought of my food getting cold while I waited and then had to explain made me decide not to bother. My friend’s rump steak was cooked perfectly rare, and the chips were gorgeous too, and since I lacked my potatoes I pinched 3 chips. I felt like a dessert, again nobody came to ask if we’d like to see the dessert menu or wanted teas or coffees. In fact after 20 minutes of expectation we got up and went to Reception to pay. My friend mentioned the service issue and the lady in charge blamed her staff. She did however apologise. That was it. And that is the last time we will go to dinner there. It’s a shame as it could have been really good.

We dropped in for lunch on our way to Pembrokeshire. It s a very quirky place with a very intesting history as it's a few hundred years old. We had a lovely light lunch all, freshly cooked and nicely served by pleasant welcoming staff. Thouroughly enjoyable break.

We went on spec (and tripadvisor ratings!) after a hike in the areas, got an early table at 6.30pm without any problem. Nice atmosphere in the dining area, tables and floor was spotlessly clean, with lots of local art on the walls. . Service was prompt and courteous but not hurried. The food was a cut above the normal pub fare, with corresponding prices, so I'd say it deserves a gastro-pub accolade, but it was all cooked fresh and arrived in decent sized portions. Restaurant/pub vegetables can often be soggy or bland and an afterthought, but my mixed greens were bright, fresh and perfectly cooked. There is the usual array of dishes but there were interesting twists which made our meal more memorable. Good selection of both mains and desserts. I'd certainly return.

Recommended by our b&b; owners we visited on a Monday evening and had a great meal. Staff were helpful and friendly and my hubby was craving meat pie on the specials board and hoped it wasn’t to be a pot with fluffy pastry on top!! Well it was a proper shortcrust pie and served with lovely veg and gravy and he was over the moon. I decided on the fish and chips and I was over the moon too! Delicious crispy fish with soft centre but those chips were to die for! I was worried the beef dripping chips would be soggy but how wrong I was! They were the crispiest fluffiest chips I have ever had and I ate more than usual. Drinks were good too! Delicious!!!

Popped in for a quick snack whilst passing through Llandovery, good choice of food from the bar menu and a good selection of Ales. Opted for the Drovers Lunch which was very good. Particularly like the scotch egg and strong Welsh cheddar. Side portion of Beef Dripping chips also very good.

We had dinner in this very pleasant and welcoming hotel I chose the fish pie with vegetable selection, my husband had gammon with chips, our son chose devilled kidneys with rice and a side dish of chips with vegetables which although ordered we had to ask for them, however all the food was hot, nicely served and the chips which are cooked in beef dripping got an excellent review from both men saying they were the best they had ever had, we are here for a few more days and will definitely eat there again if only for the chips!! also of course because our dog was made very welcome.
