Thirty Nine Cafe and Bakehouse, Independent in Bradford

This is a lovely restaurant that we have visited frequently and always had great service. It is very family friendly and accommodating and has a great atmosphere. The coffee is good and the food is excellent. Clearly the owner takes time to source the best local ingredients. The staffs are always friendly and dogs are welcome. It’s a small setting with a good number of covers, plenty of seats inside and out and the queue for seats (when busy) moves quickly. Re previous reviews regarding prams. It’s not the biggest inside and I completely understand the owners decision on this. The cafe floor is quite narrow and staff frequently stand as side to allow customers to pass freely. Genuinely if you add a couple of prams it becomes dangerous for both staff and customers- not discriminatory but a common sense approach.

A lovely cafe that in our experience has always been welcoming, serves great food and as it is ‘family owned’ they care about their business and its customers. The food and drinks are always consistently good and the service friendly and helpful. Our doggy gets special attention here and he loves the place! We can highly recommend. It is family friendly and it has a great menu that is regularly updated with great baked goods on offer daily. It is a popular venue and well loved by the locals.

I would not recommend anyone with families to visit this so called “super family run business” who indirectly discriminate by disallowing sleeping infants laying in a pram to enter their premises. I visited here last Thursday intending to have lunch with my daughter and one year old grandson, who was sleeping at the time and was told by the manager that prams were not allowed past the terrace gate. There is a visible sign which basically tells customers that pushchairs are not allowed past this point. When I questioned the female and pointed out that this was clearly discrimination. I asked if this applied to wheelchair users. She sharply answered by saying it was health and safety and wheelchair users are different and would be accommodated. The person was unprofessional and rude. You would expect a family run business to be inclusive and welcome other families, after all we are in 2024 ! Everyone should be treated equally regardless of their age, and to discriminate against a child and its mother is wrong just because they depend on the use of their pram in which has 4 wheels , the same as a wheelchair or a elderly person’s frame. I commented that I would be interested in reading their health and safety company policy. (In my profession I regularly write and approve education health and safety risk assessments) She laughed, saying she was the manager and it was her decision! We made the correct decision and walked over the road and had another beautiful lunch at Betty’s, an establishment who always go above and beyond to ensure all their customers feel welcome and have always accommodated families with prams and the food, atmosphere and service is far more superior to ‘Thirty Nine’ After returning home and reading the dissatisfied comments made by other frustrated customers I would recommend other restaurants local in Ilkley to generously spend your money.

We’ve been visiting this cafe since it opened and have had consistently good food (I especially like the homemade crumpets). The staff are friendly and efficient, and as its family run, you consistently see the same people working in there which we like. It can get busy, but there are plenty of tables both inside and outside, and if there is a queue, staff are very clear about the likely wait times. Would definitely recommend, once of our favourite places to eat in Ilkley (also appreciate that it is dog friendly inside and out).

Lovely place at the posh end of the Grove in Ilkley. We’ve supported this venue throughout its transformation over years of different ownership. The present vendors always make us feel welcome & recognised which is important. The food is excellent so too is the coffee. The pleasant exterior patio area is a lovely place to while away an hour, people watching & absorbing the relaxed atmosphere. Service is good & represents their family values in customer service. Can get busy as it is popular so expect to wait a little while sometimes but if you go here, you won’t want to rush. We always make a bee line for this place on our regular visits to Ilkley. Usually can park right outside too if we are lucky. Support this business, they deserve their success through hard work & consistency. We love it. See you soon 🙏
