This was my second visit to this food outlet. After a mediocre visit last year we thought it worth a second chance. It was not. The staff are slow and the prep area was messy and covered in the detritus of a days work. Nochance of any cleaning as they went along. One for the local food health and hygiene inspector i suspect . The food was barely warm and the meat tough as old boots. The seating area was filthy and the bins overflowed with waste. If this is Yorkshire hospitality then keep it. Save your money and time

Had great expectations that sadly were utterly missed. Was surprised to see the server weighing a tiny piece of meat, which he got from a drawer ? Chucked it in a Yorkshire pudding which he got from the table behind him, put on some veggies and potatoes again from dishes on the table and put gravy on. The gravy was only part which was anything like warm, the rest was stone cold. Very disappointed , and reading other reviews the standards have all but fallen to nothing. We went upstairs to find what can only be described as a total mess. Tables had partially empty boxes on and hadn`t seen a wet cloth for most of the day, yes they were sticky. Couldnt eat most of the overpriced cold rubbish, my wife said we had to get out of there. Oh and the toilet seat had come off.

Poor show - ran out of puds for their signature YorkyPud wrap.....twice! Visited the York Roast Co. twice when I was visiting as I'd enjoyed one on a previous visit. Unfortunately both times I tried on this trip there were no wraps left even though the premises was advertised as open for another 3 hours! Was only offered a 'Naked' roast, basically the fillings in a box so went elsewhere instead. Probably won't be back as it's really quite pricey for what it is.

I’ll start by saying I actually emailed the York Roast Co with my complaint/comments and asked for a response - they have ignored my email and then when I commented twice on their Facebook post asking if they had seen my email they have deleted both comments !!! Clearly not bothered about customer complaints/comments! So I will share my experience and some of the points from my email: Staff with long hair, not tied back properly slicing meat with hair waving all over the place - my friend found a hair in her wrap !!! Whilst waiting to order we did notice that behind the counter was extremely messy (which I know can happen if it has been busy, however it wasn’t busy when we got there but no one was tidying up, just lots of staff stood around chatting) Very bizarrely in the middle of preparing our order a lady that appeared to be in charge appeared and asked the staff member to stop what they were doing and check the contents of the first aid box for out of date stuff ! The staff member did so, leaving our part order to go cold Staff member appeared out of the kitchen carrying what appeared to be a freshly cooked turkey and placed it on the warming plate in the window and stuck a temperature probe in it. She then went over to the temperature probe, looked at it and declared “no turkey”. I explained that my daughter would only eat turkey. The lady said again “no turkey, we can’t serve it if it’s not cooked, even if it’s warm we can’t serve it” she then picked up the tray of turkey and took it back into the kitchen - surely food should be probed in the kitchen and not taken out into the shop floor and then returned to the kitchen! I watched the server prepare our wraps by what I can only describe as squashing and flattening the contents with her gloved (luckily) hand and then rolling the Yorkshire pudding up and putting it on the griddle plate, which appeared to be filthy and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for a while. Food was barely luke warm and it’s definitely not cheap The toilets are an absolute disgrace (and from looking at recent reviews it’s not just a “on that day” issue) - they are absolutely filthy including the doors and walls, overflowing bins etc! I noticed on our way out that both the “in” door and “out” door to the kitchen were wedged open with clear signs “fire door keep shut”, there were countless boxes just stacked about and there was also a box of Yorkshire puddings just sat on some crates next to cleaning equipment and rubbish. There was an open store room which also had stuff strewn about in it (I sent them photos of this!) If I could give this place zero stars I would - I’m pretty sure that they would recieve a zero star food hygiene rating ! Customer service doesn’t appear to matter to this company - they seem to have a standard response on here to get in touch with them but they ignore emails ! We will never return to nor recommend this place to anyone !

Just on a visit to York, after we looked around the Shambles and came The York Roast, it looked so tempting all the different meats, roasties, crackling. Couldn’t resist so we ended up going in which you have to order downstairs before going upstairs to the seating area. OH MY GOD! Gets upstairs and found the seating area was a total disaster. Mucky tables, chairs, floors, even the toilets were shocking to say the least so dirty. Young guy came up with our meals, roast dinners which was in a box plus had to eat them with thin wooden knives and forks. Couldn’t cut anything up with them and when we managed to, the carrots were rock hard, stuffing tasted absolutely disgusting, beef was chewy, it took that long to chew it. The only thing that wasn’t too bad was the roasties. Anyone thinking of going to this place, believe me, AVOID! It is the worst meal ever. The place was so dirty, it should be closed down. Minus 0 out of 5, SERIOUSLY AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! The main thing we regret going to this pit is not taking any photos to show everyone what our experience was like.

Disappointed. Was so looking forward to return visit for our Yorky wraps. Sadly the quality has gone down hill drastically. 2 pieces of carrot and 2 green beans, 2 bland chewy slices of beef and a drop of gravy. Young staff more interested in talking about private life. Overpriced for quality of food. Toilet facilities were dirty and I actually refused to take my daughter in them. Wish I’d read the reviews prior to visiting. Not worth a visit sadly.

I enjoyed the food, and family did too. I had double meat pork, which again was tasty, but I would have expected a bit of crackle with it. It's a seriously busy spot, and a nice bit of authentic Yorkshire. I did detect an older member of staff clearly exasperated at a younger staff member, which was in full view due to the shop lay out. I feel could've been dealt with behind the scenes.

We was recommended to come here by family who had spotted it when they visited York. We decided to try the Yorkshire Pudding Wrap, and once served we were excited to try it. However, we were disappointed to have found black plastic on the bottom of the pudding. This was not burnt pieces as me and my partner originally thought, but was actual plastic as we accidentally ate some. This was a disappointing experience, we didn’t complain in the store as the staff seemed stressed due to how busy the shop had become.

We’ve been to the York Roast several times and it’s usually been a great experience. Today was poor due to the mismanagement of physical customers and drivers collecting online orders. Despite there only being 3 couples in front of us it took 30 minutes to be served, and then a further 10 minutes to receive our food. There were plenty of wraps and other things being passed to Deliveroo and Just Eat orders, and physical customers were the bottom of the prioritisation list. This absent customer service is disgusting. We were left wondering if it would be quicker to order on Deliveroo than wait in the queue!

I had been looking forward to coming here after deciding to visit York….we weren’t disappointed! We really enjoyed it! My only complaint is that we had to upgrade to get both veg and potatoes on the wrap I thought we may of had both, anyway we paid the extra it as we wanted it all! I had pork and my husband had beef, I also had a pot of crackling and it was lovely, we opted to take away. The packaging was good and we had no gravy leakage but the paper had stuck badly to the Yorkshire pudding, it didn’t stop us finishing it! I waited over 20 minutes to put my order in but it was a busy day on York and was prepared to wait. We are due to come back again in September and will be returning for another wrap!

Went here with my boyfriend after watching a video of the food being reviewed. We waited almost 30 minutes and immediately the server started coughing so much she went to the back where the food was being cooked whilst none of the servers or cooks were wearing face coverings... after ordering we got 1 pathetically sad wrap with too much horseradish with 4 small pieces of beef and 1 cold turkey and cranberry sandwich. We also ordered a side of crackling which was also cold and disgusting. After £16 of food we left feeling very disappointed and appalled at the small portions and very cold, disgusting food. They have a board claiming the Yorky Pud Wrap would "put this county ... on the culinary global map."

Although it was a busy Sunday lunchtime in York, it took 40 minutes queuing outside (no more than 7 people waiting ahead of us and some left the queue) before we placed our order. Considering the number of take away drivers who turned up and got served straight away, it might have been quicker to order online and have it delievered around the corner. The business needs to separate its f2f and online business before all those who queued are fed up at the point they order food and write a negative review.

Our family visited here on a Saturday. It was before 12pm, so not too busy but I do know this place can get busy later on. There is limited seating upstairs if you want to eat in. The food is freshly prepared to order and does not take too long. We had the Yorkshire pudding wraps - I would say the value is pretty good with reasonable portions of meat and vegetables in them. Don't expect culinary excellence but it is so something a bit different when in York.

Bought two pork sandwiches and paid for the "beastly' option as apparently it had 50% more meat. Very disappointed. The bap was obviously just a cheap one that can be bought from Tesco. The amount of pork in the sandwich was just enough so the regular one must have been more bread than pork! There was nothing special about the pork either.

Yorkshire pudding which should be the star soggy and fairly flat - roast potatoes should be crisp on outside and fluffy on the inside - these had clearly been sat for some time and were neither crispy or fluffy. Veg was overcooked baton carrots with green beans and red onion that had not been cooked properly - stuffing was or poor quality and fairly tasteless. I noticed that when the staff cut the turkey it appeared to come from below the servery where the food is in the window and the staff member cut it up and weighed it before putting out a portion. Given that our family does not eat red meat the weighing machine had had different meats put on it without cleaning it. 1 Turkey meal, 1 vegetarian meal and 1 portion of roast potatoes with 1 portion of veg with gravy, 2 x pepsi and one bottle of water came to £23. I went with an 8 year old and a 5 year old who told me without a lie they can make better roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding themselves. We ate upstairs, dirty and very hot and the hand cleanser had run out. My advice don't waste your money, terrible advertisement for Yorkshire puddings. We sat next to a group of young men who all had the Yorkshire pudding wrap, their considered opinion was the meat was dry, no flavour and they wish they had gone to McDonalds!

Woke up one day and thought, I want a roast, a nice and tasty roast. As students, me and partner thought it would be the best option for us. We got the beef yorkie and the vegetarian option with extra scratchings and stuffing. Stuffing was lovely, i’ll give them that. But the meat was dry, the scratchings were thoroughly disappointing and the “vegetarian” labelled option was definitely not vegetarian. I’ve been veggie for years and i was vomiting for hours afterwards - my partner thinks the gravy was meat gravy, which isn’t good. if they called it a veggie or vegetable option then that would be okay, but by calling it the vegetarian option that’s just false advertising. I can’t say it was food p*isoining as that’s not quite right but it definitely made sick. the scratchings were hard and dry, unseasoned and just really inedible. I’ve always heard of people talk greatly about the york roast but this was disappointing. I’m sad we got them on a bad day. (attached is a photo of the scratching with salt we added ourselves)

No volveré.

Bland, cold, tasteless roast dinner. We wish we had found a nice local pub as this was hugely disappointing, especially after a recommendation on YouTube supposedly being the best yorkshire pudding ever.

Had lunch here on Saturday, not a single element of it was any good. Gristly meat, almost raw veg and the stuff had so much sage in it it was all you could taste. Overpriced and terrible.

Good idea but the food did not taste of much - meat was dry and there was nothing special about it. Would not recommend.

We had ham roast and it was divine! Unfortunately there were not many sitting places due to social distancing, if you can’t find any seats, do get the wrap as it would be a challenge to eat!

I use this place quite regularly, usually before work for a quick bite. I find the food decent and the staff friendly and very hardworking... Esp tolerating all the Saturday drunks they get visiting at the end of the night. Keep up the good work guys. X

I love a Sunday roast, but to have that Sunday roast inside a large Yorkshire pudding and made into a wrap is the most amazing concept ever. It’s prepared in front of you, using the freshest of ingredients and tastes incredible. Oh and the staff are amazing and polite as well.

Had the giant Yorkshire pudding filled with beef, veggies, roast potatoes and stuffing. £8 was not a ridiculous price for what was a good quality meal. The extra pork scratchings were delicious.

We've all seen the videos on social media don't believe the hype. I saw this video on a food bloggers page and thought I'd give it a go.For starters it's a frozen Yorkshire pudding, the meat was tough and the veg was cooked within an inch of its life. Can only say the horseradish sauce stopped me from binning it. Tourists might love this sort of thing but as a fellow born and bred in Yorkshire there's not much Yorkshire about it.

A delicious roast dinner served in a giant yorkshire pudding wrap - yes please! Grab a table upstairs and make a glorious mess scoffing this wrap. All components are cooked well - even the veggies are nice and al dente. Perfect gravy. A must visit whilst in York.

Had a beef Yorkshire wrap. It was excellent and would have eaten two. Next time I would try a meal to have the roast potatoes also as they looked amazing. An only possible way to improve would be faster service as it seemed to take a long time for no apparent reason.

The YorkyPud(TM) wrap was average at best, it was worth trying but wouldn’t have it again. The vegetables are clearly out of the frozen section of Iceland and the meat portions are weighed out and stingy. Service was extremely slow, even though it wasn’t busy.

My tip here would be not to eat here and keep walking. There were just 7 people in the que in front of us. It took roughly 35 mins just to get served. The 3 staff were ultra slow, chatted nonsense constantly, had no sense of urgency and to top it off got our orders wrong!! The pork was tough and overcooked, bread not fresh, apple sauce added when we clearly asked for none and the staff were more interested in staring out of the window clearly wishing they were elsewhere. To add insult when' just eat' or 'deliveroo' couriers entered the shop they were passed their order immediately and the staff had a little banter with them and then went back to their miserable selves. Who ever owns this shop needs to go as a secret shopper and just see what a disappointing experience it really is.

Pork Sandwich lovely but SLOW service. It was lunchtime, there was a queue of about 5 people. But the time taken to get served was excessive; most of the staff seemed to be stood around or operated at a slow pace. However, the pork sandwich was great although at 5.40 isn’t a cheap lunch! Slightly perturbing that every portion of meet is meticulously weighed out.

Loved the food had the Yorkshire wrap with turkey, staff were great, However upstairs were you can sit down the bins were full and trays everywhere piled up. with the turn over it has they need a staff member cleaning the tables and emptying the bins. If this was clean and tidy like a restaurant should be it would have had 5*

Amazing! The food was fantastic, really well presented and tasted divine. The portions were generous and they do an amazing hot chocolate too. The service was outstanding, staff were attentive without being intrusive. Everyone was friendly and polite - the establishment has a generous outdoor eating area but we opted to eat in the cosy indoor space. Yes indoor does equate to small here but that is a common theme in York with the abundance of listed buildings. Well worth a visit

Friendly landlady beer was nothing special. Gone down hill since last visit. Beer garden unkept and in poor shape. Hopefully in will improve was great pre covid busy clean and vibrant. It does have new managers now.

My wife and myself have eaten here a fair few times. But never have been as wowwed as we were last night. The gentleman at front of house was impeccable. A credit to the pub. After surveying the specials menu we both decided that the shin of beef pie with champ mash and fresh veg sounded too good to be missed. We were not disappointed! We both said, quite possibly the best pub meal we have ever ever had! The beef was cooked perfectly, the short crust pastry was just incredible. My wife Lydia said it was just like her mum's. That's some credit to the chef! The champ mash was delicious and the veg cooked absolutely spot on. Not a second too long. Again, perfect! We were probably too full for dessert but we were never going to resist if the main was anything to go by. My wife chose the Eton mess. I've never seen anyone look so happy eating a dessert. It looked amazing and indeed it was. I chose the apple and blueberry crumble. Simple and delicious. Just how I like it. All washed down with two fine glasses of Primitivo. And all very reasonable too. Top marks to everyone at the pub. We most definitely will be back!
